Good year, with some excellent heavy games that weren't mentioned. Here's my list: 10. Splendor 9. Roll for the Galaxy 8. Istanbul 7. Deception Murder in Hong Kong 6. 18OE 5. Orleans 4. Clinic 3. La Granja 2. Kanban 1. Arkwright
Xia plus expansion is a tip tier evergreen game. There is no game that gives you greater old school, Amiga sci-fi, sandboxy type vibes. It's wonderful. Five Tribes and Roll for the Galaxy just mature like fine wines, they're so good.
Dice Masters and Star Wars: Imperial Assault are two of my three, all time favorite games. I would likely play either of these over anything else if afforded an opportunity to do so. (And I prefer the campaign mode of Imperial Assault over the two-player skirmish mode.)
That was a fun list. 2014 was indeed a good year. I bought 15 games listed as 2014 games. Four of mine made your list... and they are all great games. Good games that did not make your lists... Patchwork, Star Realms (still play it live and on Steam), Colt Express, Heroes of Normandie, Paperback, Thunder Alley, and Lords of Xidit (play it on BGA). I would still play any of these at the drop of a hat.
Every 3, 2 and 1 mentioned are amazing games. Five Tribes would be my #1 though... it has it all. Bidding for turn, multiple ways to gain points, genies that break the rules. Incredible production, components and art are really amazing, to be expected of Days of Wonder, but still needs to be mentioned. Just a gem of a game and feels pretty unique.
1:16:46 I love that cover for Abyss so much, but I'd never get my wife to play the game based on that. The Anniversary cover is not as visually impressive, but more playful and inviting rather than intimidating
I’d love to see you guys do a top 10 games you wish you were great at. It’s be an interesting list. Would you rather be great at a major game like MtG or something obscure like crushing people in cash n guns?
My top 10 from 2014. I used to be pretty big on thematic games first but have switched to mostly euros. So this list has changed substantially compared to if i would have done it back in 2014 a 2015. Honorable mentions: Star Wars: Imperial Assault, Colt Express. I don’t play these at all nowadays and have sold them. Would be really high up back in the days. 10. Lord of Xidit 9. La Granja 8. Abyss 7. Imperial Settlers 6. Istanbul 5. Five Tribes (honestly not intentional that it’s #5) 4. Castles of Mad King Ludwig 3. Dead of Winter (used to be #1 - got me into the hobby) 2. Murano (hidden gem for euro fans) 1. Orleans (still play til this day, excellent euro in my top 15 games of all time).
Tom continuing with that made up story about Camel Up. The rule book and back of the box both say Camel Up in the initial printing. How is the manufacturer to blame for the exact same typo showing I'm multiple times in the printed text copy? Sorry, but if you actually did talk to someone that told you that, they were pretty clearly lying to you.
Brings up a 2014 game based on Quorriors, then calls another game from 2014 the Dominion of bag building. Quorriors definitely came before and is more likely to be the first.
I'm wondering who enjoys having their name in a "shout out"... do people get excited having their name said in a RUclips video? I make good used of the 5 second skip during them because I couldn't care less about hearing random listeners' names. Maybe there can be a stretch goal in the next kickstarter to just have one big shout out video and stop doing shout outs in all other videos. I'd donate extra to hit that goal.
2014 was around the time I got into the hobby and SO MANY of these games defined how I view gaming
I love that they shouted out Board Game Bliss! Great local store in Toronto!
The link seems to be missing from the video description, but I think I can find it somehow using my incredible searching skills.
Thanks for mentioning this, Peter. Updated the description with the link!
As opposed to all of the nation wide niche hobby store chains?
I like 401 games in Toronto. Staff is amazing and always helpful.
@joshfrench5858 also a great store!
Zee, I was the orher fan of Viceroy. Really satisfying game.
2014 was a great year. Five Tribes is still my favorite game. Played Dice Masters last week with my son. Still so much fun.
Those 10 years flew by
This is the year I played for the first time Catan, Forbidden Island and 7 Wonders and my life changed forever.
2014 was a great year for gaming for me! It was the year I started playing modern boardgames. Bought my first one on November 20th.
Same. Abyss was one of the first ones I bought
Number 10 = 7:50
Number 9 = 14:40
Number 8 = 23:40
Number 7 = 33:40
Number 6 = 44:00
Number 5 = 54:10
Number 4 = 1:00:00
Number 3 = 1:05:05
Number 2 = 1:08:50
Number 1 = 1:14:40
Can’t believe how many great games were in this year. Some games I still play weekly like Istanbul.
Flat bottom pearls you make the rocking world go round
Good year, with some excellent heavy games that weren't mentioned. Here's my list:

2. Kanban

"I normally…do not like rewarding that kind of behavior!" Lol.
2014 was a strong year, I've played more than 30 games that came out in that year.
My #1 is Fields of Arle.

Star Wars: Imperial Assault is amazing

Love Xia...with the expansion! Works great 😍
Maskmen is awesome! I also didn't find and play Maskmen until a couple years ago. This was a great year.
I think it was somehow overshadowed by Scout
Re: bag building games - I think Hyperborea came out before Orleans. Both came out in 2014, though.
medieval academy is underrated
Glad to see Viceroy made it on the list. Great game that did not get the love.
I became a member on BGA in november 2013. Crazy! Also how much has happend there now. Specially durong the pandemic it just exploded.
Every 3, 2 and 1 mentioned are amazing games. Five Tribes would be my #1 though... it has it all.

Is Dice Masters still being produced?
Surprised nobody in the stream or chat mentioned that Orleans has a 10th Anniversary box! That edition looks amazing!
It sure does!
10. Patchwork 9. Aquasphere 8. Fresco 7. Abyss 6. Fields of Arle 5. Splendor 4. 5 Tribes 3. La Granja 2. Castles of Mad King Ludwig 1. Orleans
fresco is 2010
@@seahawksfan9168fresco big box probably
What a year: Orleans, Five Tribes, Istanbul, La Granja, Istanbul, Onitama, Evolution,...
Most of those games are terrible lol
I’d love to see you guys do a top 10 games you wish you were great at. It’s be an interesting list. Would you rather be great at a major game like MtG or something obscure like crushing people in cash n guns?
Fire in the Lake, Onitama, Fields of Arle, Port Royal, Splendor, Camel Up, Five Tribes, Linko, Deception, Roll for the Galaxy
Xia, one of my favourite games of all time 🌌🚀🛸
And the expansion fixes most of the clunkiness that Tom was talking about
The "surfer" game is Tavarua
My top 10 from 2014. I used to be pretty big on thematic games first but have switched to mostly euros. So this list has changed substantially compared to if i would have done it back in 2014 a 2015.

Spyfall is brilliant. Love it. But, you must play with the roles.
There's a spyfall variant where the spy is just given a different location. So you have to figure out that you are the spy first
Just a heads up that Prometheus was already out by 2014 since it was released in 2012.
40:14 "MUCH later" = 2 years before this... (Prometheus somehow came out in 2012)
The Lord of the Ice Garden ;)
Great show, but whomever has been assigned lately behind the camera keeps cutting people off while they are talking. Can you signal each other?
Joey? Patience, grasshopper…
I wonder what magical forces converged to make so many top-tier games that year?
The actual title of the game is "Amel Cup".
📣PLAY XIA WITH THE EXPANSION 📣
Even if it just the economy board from the expansion.
Orléans is so good!
Scharfe Schoten: one of the best trick-taking games! (2014)
20:33 I want a reprint of this game with more characters and campaigns! I love this game!
Y'all seriously forgot Star Realms 😭
It's a bad game lol
Was there not enough time for the people’s list? I was curious. :D
How. HOW! How can you pick Sherif over Orleans? That is a ludicrous choice. I think the Essential line got to you there, Tom.
Well, it was IN the Essential line because I liked it so much. Not the other way around.
Zhanguo and Splendor ❤
Hold on, do I really have to wait until 2034 to hear the top 10 games of this year?
Hey, no ads? 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Zee - the rubies in Istanbul are victory points - and you finish the round, so getting there first doesn’t necessarily win you the game.
Tbh if you haven’t played Xia with the expansion, then you haven’t played Xia.
Prometheus came out in 2012
We don't talk about that.
Mentioning Onitama and not recounting Sam's glorious and legendary win against Jason at the Longhorn's steakhouse is disgraceful!
*********
The Alien vs Predator movie came out in 2004

Maskmen is getting a Disney villain retheme!
Oh yeah, forgot to mention this! Looks great. -Chris
No Concordia is criminal :(
Concordia (2013)
@zusto1988 oh, really? I remember it going against Istanbul in Spiel Des Jahres
@@Deokiev based on bgg it is 2013 :)
Viceroy failed not because of the game, but because of the publisher. Mayday games was at their absolute worst with that game.

Clear best game of 2014: Germany - Brazil: 7 - 1
