One of the problems is the rehab hospitals don’t push the survivors hard enough after the neurological event. I’m 7 years post stroke and I often think about my therapists in the hospital
Almost from the very beginning, I noticed that Tara's approach to problem solving suits me the most. The explanations before the exercises are very important to me so that I can construct and, with the help of children and friends, make auxiliary tools to develop the movements I have lost. I pay special attention to details to avoid negative synergies and compensations. I try to connect it with practical application, right down to dancing. It's fun for me and success motivates me to keep going. The magazine is full of useful tips and insights. Thank you Tara, have a successful and happy 2025. I look forward to new videos.
Thank you for being such a valuable member of this community! Your kindness and support mean so much to me and have such a positive impact on this community. I am confident you will accomplish big things in 2025 and I am excited to be along for your ride! 😊
This is very true. I also think discipline and determination plays a big role in recovery. My therapist gave me some homework that I found boring, so I created similar activities that were fun for me, which makes me more excited to put in the work to reach my goals. A lot of this is trial and error. I l treat everything like a case study. I try to document things, and make a journal, which helps with mental recovery. I'm currently doing Acupuncture, stretch sessions, personal training, home exercises and OT. Many ask me what do I think is working the best, it's hard to answer. I think it's all helping to some degree. I want to try Aqua therapy next and massage. I also want to talk to a therapist, to share all of this with. Again, I look at everything as trial and error, a case study. I did a walk study a year ago. I'm willing to try different things and share with others. I feel a lot better mentally these days, that's the most important thing to me. I was traumatized for a while after my stroke and still have my days. I've come a long way physically, but my mental state was holding me back for a while. Keep fighting, never give up.
What continues to aggravate me was that , while I was on inpatient rehab for a month and back on my feet after my stroke and dressing myself, there was very little done for my arm/hand for the entire month save a few ems sessions. Then, after I get into outpatient, thy tell me that the sooner you work on arm/hand the better. It was very discouraging and the ratio of leg / foot to arm/hand rehab was consistently weighted to leg/foot. Then, after working hard for two years basically on my own, I'm told I'll likely never get that hand moving again. It's hard not to give up, especially when my only support is my Husband, also in stroke recovery, who cannot help me much with Range of motion. Your videos / exercises give me hope.
Thank you so much for sharing, Ms. Tobias! I couldn't agree more! Thank you so much for always sharing your insights, exercises, and weekly motivation that's helped me take ownership of my therapy!
Yes Kathryn! I definitely think you embrace this concept as you often share how you are designing and modifying your program! And it is paying off! I hope many see the connection between this comment (of yours) and all of the wins you have shared over the years! Keep going and keep inspiring all of us in this community!
4+ years into this journey I still have much to learn, but I believe I am the world leading expert on this crazy body. Ownership of my recovery is key. Having said that I appreciate all you bring to this channel to explain, instruct, model, & provide to help this community. Happy 2025.
Nuero rehab is NOT a one size shoe that fits ALL process. I believe if one asserts control over self, they WILL be more engaged. (I am a MASSIVE STROKE SURVIVOR; have been a miracle in every sense.)
Mirror ownership effect.... You described me to a "T". I am not a stroke survivor, but am a MS warrior. Thank you for your words of wisdom. I'm new to your channel and I'm really enjoying your content. Thank you so much and I wish you all the best in 2025!
Thank you for watching and for sharing! This definitely applies to all of life's challenges and overcoming them :) I appreciate your kind words and I look forward to all that you will accomplish in 2025!
Just want to thank you for trying to help the people who have had a stroke, We are all unique on size does not fit all, your approach is the best on u-tube . Thanks for all you do .Love Ed
I know for a fact my recovery is 100% my responsibility much like a child's education and early success in life is the Parents responsibility, not the teacher. Than is why I glomed onto you, and Kevin Gocke, Nathan, and others. I learn so many things, and apply what I think is best for my recovery, and my physical ability. I'm 63 47 days out of the hospital. I can walk 2 miles, and get my big ass from laying down on the floor to my feet with no assistance, meaning table, chair,or cane. I still use my cane to walk around the neighborhood till I get a walking stick, (your recommended) changed my diet completely. Lost 10 pounds so far, and taking my meds like the Dr's said. Thanks for all your help.
Having skin in the game makes it personal. In my stroke recovery, I’ve had to figure out what works for me. I love her explanation because it challenges you to engage your brain and problem-solve. THANK YOU ❤
I agree with ownership. I like to own my goals. Also having been a control freak pre stroke gives me a feeling of having some control in my recovery process.Thank you for this explanation
Everything is hard now, like plugging something in , I almost got stuck between the wall and the bed, I live alone, so I’m going to do exercises like getting up off of the floor without using any aides to do so, been dealing with this stroke for two years now, almost broke, can’t get any help from nobody, especially the government, I have no choice but to get better or else, like being homeless, I’m playing in some poker games, but don’t want to rely on that alone, at least I can still do that, my game has improved since the stroke 😊
I had a stroke in 2019 I still workout, but I have a flaw I have the hardest time getting up after being on the floor is there a exercise i could pin point to improve my ability to lift myself i do a lot of squats already please help with any information thank you in advance
Different than stroke but my daughter has foot drop since her peroneal nerve was fully transected at the knee by another ice skater's blade. Emg still shows no reactivity. NeuroPT and surgeon still say to visualize dorsiflexion and do mirror exercises to help with neuro feedback. How much can mind over matter help if nerve connections just haven't healed or connected yet?
Happy new year Doc,. It is possible to walk the post stroke it almost 2years ago at present that he /she still not moving the affected part of body,.what exercise u adviced to have improvement to walk a long time stroke patient😢
I understand what your saying and I agree BUT someone like me who had a stroke in February 2024 I need structure and guidance. I know you can't draw up a plan specific to me and where I'm at because you don't know me and I'm not your patient BUT a structured game plan would help. I piece your therapy together n form my own BUT honestly I don't know if I'm putting them together correctly. If you out a beginner/intermediate/advanced workout together that would work. I get lazy when picking things out, this isn't my field of expertise. You put the way and I go.
Absolutely Daniel! In person therapy is absolutely essential I the early stages (and often times intermittently in the years following). Also, this is the purpose of our membership program and one on one coaching. This is where I help people to get on the right path :) Keep going and don't give up! You got this!
I love understanding Why I am doing something and what is to be achieved from it
Yes! 🙌

OMG, so many pearls in this comment. This is what the mere ownership effects looks like in practice :)

This is awesome! Thanks for sharing your story and for being an inspiration to us all in this community!
Neurodivergent people (particularly autism/ADHD) tend to prefer understanding and knowing 'why' rather than just being told 'what'.
Awesome so true!

Thank you so much! I will pass it along 😊🐶
Happy New year Dr Tara . Goals and ownership similar from my point of view. When you want it, you will get it

This is amazing! Taking responsibility is your secret weapon. What an inspiration! 2 miles and counting! Keep going!
Thank you 🙏

Yes! Problem solving is hard but so worth it!
I always tweak my programs
I approve 😊

Yes! I think one of the greatest benefits of owning your rehab is it puts you back in control!
True!!

Do you have any input on the Vivistim vagus nerve stimulator implant that is used for mobility control in the upper limb?
