    I remember being in the hospital and impatient therapy after I had my stroke. I was stressed, I was having anxiety and barely slept, they woke me up several times during the night to give me meds. I also had no control over what I ate, they controlled my breakfast lunch and dinner choices. In the beginning I had swallowing issues and could only eat and drink certain things. It took weeks to be able to eat regular food again and drink liquids. Now I mostly eat Salmon, vegetables, rice and eat apples for snacks and drink plenty of water daily. At night I sleep way more now than I did a year ago. Managing stress is very difficult, exercise helps me with this. When I exercise, It's like I'm in a different world. Plus exercise keeps me busy when I'm at a plateau or slow period in my recovery. Once I started with my personal trainer, my mood got a lot better, therapy was stressful for me in the beginning but it's a lot better now when I go because I know more about stroke and I'm more familiar with mu body and I have goals. It's important to communicate this with family friends, care takers, doctors and therapist. Some may confuse being paralyzed with weakness and spasticity and may give up because they think they are paralyzed. I used to think I was paralyzed until a year ago and wanted to quit. Once they ran test that showed spasticity and weakness was my issue, they came up with a plan for me specifically to capitalize on the activation and movement that I have and I improved a lot. I still have a long way to go but I'm a lot more happier today than I was yesterday. I would love for things to go back to the way it was a few years ago but there's nothing I can do about that but keep trying. I grieved for months, almost a year and it didn't change anything for me, it just made thing worse. Discovering an AVM caused my stroke, made things worse, that affects 1% of people, it's very rare, so I was thinking why me?! but the only thing I can do now is try to get a piece of my life back by fighting. With all that said, Ireally hope they find a way to cure stroke.

      @@kicknowledgesmith8608 I found that to many things on my mind in a short period of time overwhelmed me, and I tell people that, I’m sorry, but my brain can only deal with so much sometimes , so please don’t take it personal if I neglect or forget things, however it will get better. Lately, it has gotten better.

    It's been 44 months since I had my stroke. Inflammation was a big part of my manifestations. I started listening to you when I was still in the hospital. I retired last year. I bowl better now than I did before my stroke. I wrote a book in three months that I finished before Halloween. No, it was not about my stroke. It's about a pair of vampires. Writing forced me to engage my brain. You are a great resource.

    My wife and I consider you, “ The other Woman, we did an online meeting with you, and visited you and your Dog at your office. almost at two years from my Stroke and still fighting. We were Keynote Speakers at a Stroke Summit about three Months ago and the feedback was positive. I spoke about your help once all rehab through the system is exhausted and listening to you today would have been pure gold for the people who attended. The Summit took place in Ottawa Ontario Canada.

    Ms. T I had a stroke from developing sepsis & a hole in my stomach !!! & all my organs were shutting down except for my heart ❤️ in witch I had a triple bypass like 5 years prior !!! U a true blessing !!! ❤️✌️

    Thank you so much for sharing this, Ms. Tobias! I noticed that when I from eating packaged meals due to my lack of ability and mobility issues post stroke and started eating one ingredient, foods and the occasional homemade sourdough bread, my fatigue went down with my weight. I still have a ways to go, and I still have moderate fatigue, but I've definitely gotten more mobility and affected side ability along the way. I really appreciate your holistic approach!

      @rehabhqofficial Pt, Ot, and naps helped me a ton to get to the point where I had the strength and coordination to stand for the length of time necessary to cook anything. My husband helped by putting things in and taking things out of my oven until I was safe and brave enough to do so myself. Also, my instant pot has been a huge help because it can do so many things and takes up such a small area.

      @AnthonyNelson-d5i anniversary is fast approaching! Jan 15th. Left side is affected. Spasticity of shoulder, hand and spasm/ a rapid/quick wave of intense pain in left side of left ankle joint brings me down, with zero resistance to stay upright without support.

    Definitely mental well being and grieving is extremely important I had a massive hemmoragic stroke on right side basil ganglia and it really teared me up when you brought up grief I’ve always delt with depression and it definitely held back alot of my recovery

    Tnx Tara. I agree with everything you said. I also researched what and how to eat from all available sources. I ate tons of oatmeal for about two years until I found out that the most useful part in the membrane is lost during processing, and the starch remains. I would only say that we should eat a variety of low-processed foods and vegetables are very important to us, more than fruit. Your articles in the Magazine are very good. Have a nice week.

    I have a question, since I had a hemorrhagic stroke, I got left with many sequels, however the worst sequel is the spasticity, this prevents me from moving easily, the more I move my hand, or leg, the more stiff and painful they get, then I have a hard time to do the physical therapy.

    You mentioned steel cut oats and will assume rolled oats are also viewed as instant oats? Rolled oats generally don’t have any added sugar or flavored.

      Excellent question! The more the oat has been processed, the more fiber and nutrients are removed. I hope that helps!

    My functional medicine doctor told me to only eat foods with five ingredients or less from the grocery store.
    Also with supplements and vitamins make sure that they are not highly processed if you can get vegan add also the more expensive it is you will see that the better it is for you because of the kind of all natural ingredients that are being used.
    Get a nutrient test get a cell test.
    This will do wonders for you in regards to your energy the health of your body and regulating your blood work.
    If you need the energy to even function enough and be strong enough to do any kind of exercise in the first place it begins with a proper diet... having a cell or nutrient test done will also tell you what foods you should be eating for your body type and that will aid in healing you and healing your brain and organs as well.
    Yes you absolutely need water just remember before you drink the water to have a little Celtic Sea salt or pink salt put a little bit under your tongue and drink a little bit of water each time you do this.
    The magnesium helps to get the water into your cell so that you can be properly hydrated.
