I’m just glad to see Dave enjoying himself playing nirvana songs again. For the last 25 years he’s avoided playing nirvana despite the millions of requests cause he just couldn’t deal with the emotion, he more than deserves to feel good about playing nirvana.
Actually, its quiet the opposite. When kurt died he almost gave up music in general, the media kept requesting for him to play it and he kept denying it because it'd remind him of kurt. He finally decided to do it

The most recent being in 2018 as an encore for Foo Fighters. John from Deer Tick sang Sentless Apprentice and In Bloom, Joan Jett sang the rest. Look them up on RUclips if you want something surreal. I got to meet I'm in the big day out in 2000 or 99 I can't remember, think I smoked a bit lol. Was at a t shirt stand, was talking to a beautiful t shirt sales girl, came over, had a chat, few others realised who he was, and made a stage left and high tailed it. But he has a very gentle demeanour and quite switched on, good sort of a guy.

Currently reading Dave's book, and I think about when he is talking about how sometimes when he's behind a kit on stage he can still see Kurt in front of him. I cant shake the thought that this would definitely be one of those moments for him.

You know, it's a testament to Dave, he was part of one of the biggest bands to ever be. Then after Kurt died, years later he started his own band and they are now hugely popular and one of the biggest bands ever also. Says a lot about his talent
I would tend to guess this is something he does privately by himself. I bet he plays along and has to fight back the tears. He's a strong guy for playing that with a smile. As the song progress you can feel that he is having fun and missing his friend. Bit by bit you can feel that he is feeling like the Dave Grohl from Nirvana. No one can play this song like Dave.

Grohl plays this song like he did in the 90’s. Kurts soul was watching him from heaven. I lost a friend that was in a band with me and every time I grab my guitar I feel his spirit with me. I bet that’s what grohl feels every time he plays thoughs Nirvana songs. It’s tuff and I have a lot of respect for playing these songs.

Perhaps but it would be stranger if it were someone else on stage singing Kurt’s lyrics. Playing live in front of a crowd with a track playing in the background can’t be much different than jamming solo in a practice session.
Perfect fucking metronome timing still to this day his drumming actually sounds like it’s got a little more tighter but it’s still has that power to it I’ve seen a lot of smells like teen sprit drum covers and nobody can do it like Dave it’s timing and touch is impeccable idc what anybody says

Amazing. Look at how differently he acts during the 1st chorus (1:11) and 2nd chorus (2:24). He's just completely lost in the moment, gone back to '91 and reminisces of Kurt being there in front of him doing his thing. Beautiful stuff!
He won't do it in concert with the Foo Fighters. All they have done is teasers and left it at that. Foo fans would love to hear this at their concerts.
When I visited Seattle in 91’ Nirvana played a show that had a few songs from Nevermind. They called the show time to get Bleached. When it was all finished all three Kurt, Dave and Kris, drank with us and we got to talk to them as they were our friends. I told Dave that I wanted to be a drummer like him and he shook my hand.

We all deal with grief and loss differently and Dave clearly has stated how difficult it has been for him. To see this is as part of his healing is very humbling for him I'm sure and to do it publicly is a ginormous step. So glad to be seeing this today, I remember 1st hearing Nirvana, one of the greatest years of my life as I'm sure it is for many others, thanks Dave for sharing these moments with us 🥁!

@@PMurray2694 I disagree. It's not easy. Yes, technically the beat is simple enough but the way Dave played it was genius. It's actually slightly out of time. He drags the first beat of the bar and then kind of speeds up the rest. It gives the song real punch. Whenever you hear other people cover the song it just doesn't sound right. It's very hard to play a wonky beat with that level of consistency (very similar to Ringo in fact).

Honestly, when that cymbal fell I felt something. Dave for the longest time did not play nirvana songs(I never heard him play any in 20+ yr) something about not seeing his face and just listening to the music (drums)for the latter half was something poetic
Two things I learned by watching this… just how much his hi-hat gets slipped into parts and used with nuance one second and then unabashedly the next… and just how little his ride is used. 🤣 Dave’s always beat the drums like they owed him money so seeing him as a monster drummer behind the kit was no surprise, but it is still fun to watch none the less. Great video!
A ride cymbal is not used on this track or required. If I were tasked with re-creating the drumbeat from the album I'd start with a 90's model Tama rockstar kit with a big mounted tom 16" diameter and about a 18" diameter floor tom and an avedis set up with 2 crashes. 14" or 15" high hats with a first crash of 17" or 18" and a secondary crash of 19" or 20" diameter . My snare would be regular rolled shell aluminum. The kick would be around 20" diameter, pillow loaded.

This was thrilling. Saw a clip on Twitter and moved over here to see the whole thing. As he lost himself further in the song, the more I waited for those thunderous fills right before the choruses. He never disappointed, & each was better than the last.
I got to stand side of stage 10 feet away from him drumming for Nirvana until I decided the mosh looked like fun and jumped in, promptly losing my backstage pass in the process. Still kicking myself 30 years later. Man he pounded the drums hard, and a total sweetheart of a bloke too.
The StoryTeller sent me here! Gosh this performance was incredible! The drums have always been something that I have felt rather than seen. The drum set is usually tucked towards the back of the stage, but Dave plays his heart out, and I had no idea how physically demanding and complicated it is! I've watched this a half dozen times and it never gets old. Put on top of that, that this isn't just a "regular" performer but someone who actually was in Nirvana with Kurt Cobain and what it must feel like to play this song again.
After more than 10 years as a musician, I realised that the most amazing thing is playing in a simple and passionate way. This is not a complex drum line (of course, it requires a lot of technique to perform it live, specially the hi-hat part), but I really doubt that anyone would be able to play it like him. Putting it in a nutshell, it requires a lot of talent and effort to turn something simple into a masterpiece. Bravo 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
I think you're totally right. I started to learn drums in high school 30 years ago so I can do these basic patterns, badly. But watching this I was immediately struck by just how very good he makes this sound, for as you say it's really quite a simple piece. It's tight. Undeniably him and majestic to watch.
With all due respect, I could play that beat when I was 12, an which, given my present dotage, preceded the birth of Mr. Grohl. That beat you would learn in an introductory book on set drumming. He's an incredible musician and human, but I can't even begin to agree with your analysis. To add context, I was born in 1963, and have played percussion and drums in a concert in Central Park in Manhattan, U.S.A. as well as all over parts of the midwest U.S.A. I agree with you that he is playing in a simple and passionate manner, and that many consider this song to be a masterpiece. I am most impressed with Mr. Grohl as a person: he is married to the same woman all these years, is very active in raising his kids, and most of all, he is "down to earth."
As someone who has drummed basically my entire life, I agree with this sentiment as a whole, although there are definitely people who can play it just like this so don’t agree with that part personally. But I used to always try to make my drum parts as complex as possible, trying to never repeat a phrase or fill, and as I’ve gotten older I’ve realized that playing like that kind of takes away from the rest of the song. It’s cool to do stuff like that occasionally, but having restraint and playing simple beats is what’s best for a song a lot of the time. I can’t imagine this song with a crazy complex beat, it wouldn’t have nearly as much power.

When I visited Seattle in 91’ Nirvana played a show that had a few songs from Nevermind. They called the show time to get Bleached. When it was all finished all three Kurt, Dave and Kris, drank with us and we got to talk to them as they were our friends. I told Dave that I wanted to be a drummer like him and he shook my hand.

We all deal with grief and loss differently and Dave clearly has stated how difficult it has been for him. To see this is as part of his healing is very humbling for him I'm sure and to do it publicly is a ginormous step. So glad to be seeing this today, I remember 1st hearing Nirvana, one of the greatest years of my life as I'm sure it is for many others, thanks Dave for sharing these moments with us 🥁!

@@PMurray2694 I disagree. It's not easy. Yes, technically the beat is simple enough but the way Dave played it was genius. It's actually slightly out of time. He drags the first beat of the bar and then kind of speeds up the rest. It gives the song real punch. Whenever you hear other people cover the song it just doesn't sound right. It's very hard to play a wonky beat with that level of consistency (very similar to Ringo in fact).

Honestly, when that cymbal fell I felt something. Dave for the longest time did not play nirvana songs(I never heard him play any in 20+ yr) something about not seeing his face and just listening to the music (drums)for the latter half was something poetic
Two things I learned by watching this… just how much his hi-hat gets slipped into parts and used with nuance one second and then unabashedly the next… and just how little his ride is used. 🤣 Dave’s always beat the drums like they owed him money so seeing him as a monster drummer behind the kit was no surprise, but it is still fun to watch none the less. Great video!
A ride cymbal is not used on this track or required. If I were tasked with re-creating the drumbeat from the album I'd start with a 90's model Tama rockstar kit with a big mounted tom 16" diameter and about a 18" diameter floor tom and an avedis set up with 2 crashes. 14" or 15" high hats with a first crash of 17" or 18" and a secondary crash of 19" or 20" diameter . My snare would be regular rolled shell aluminum. The kick would be around 20" diameter, pillow loaded.

This was thrilling. Saw a clip on Twitter and moved over here to see the whole thing. As he lost himself further in the song, the more I waited for those thunderous fills right before the choruses. He never disappointed, & each was better than the last.
I got to stand side of stage 10 feet away from him drumming for Nirvana until I decided the mosh looked like fun and jumped in, promptly losing my backstage pass in the process. Still kicking myself 30 years later. Man he pounded the drums hard, and a total sweetheart of a bloke too.

The StoryTeller sent me here! Gosh this performance was incredible! The drums have always been something that I have felt rather than seen. The drum set is usually tucked towards the back of the stage, but Dave plays his heart out, and I had no idea how physically demanding and complicated it is! I've watched this a half dozen times and it never gets old. Put on top of that, that this isn't just a "regular" performer but someone who actually was in Nirvana with Kurt Cobain and what it must feel like to play this song again.
The pure energy from this is insane!! Those cymbals and kicks sound so good together, POWERFUL!!!

After more than 10 years as a musician, I realised that the most amazing thing is playing in a simple and passionate way. This is not a complex drum line (of course, it requires a lot of technique to perform it live, specially the hi-hat part), but I really doubt that anyone would be able to play it like him. Putting it in a nutshell, it requires a lot of talent and effort to turn something simple into a masterpiece. Bravo 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
I think you're totally right. I started to learn drums in high school 30 years ago so I can do these basic patterns, badly. But watching this I was immediately struck by just how very good he makes this sound, for as you say it's really quite a simple piece. It's tight. Undeniably him and majestic to watch.

With all due respect, I could play that beat when I was 12, an which, given my present dotage, preceded the birth of Mr. Grohl. That beat you would learn in an introductory book on set drumming. He's an incredible musician and human, but I can't even begin to agree with your analysis. To add context, I was born in 1963, and have played percussion and drums in a concert in Central Park in Manhattan, U.S.A. as well as all over parts of the midwest U.S.A. I agree with you that he is playing in a simple and passionate manner, and that many consider this song to be a masterpiece. I am most impressed with Mr. Grohl as a person: he is married to the same woman all these years, is very active in raising his kids, and most of all, he is "down to earth."
As someone who has drummed basically my entire life, I agree with this sentiment as a whole, although there are definitely people who can play it just like this so don’t agree with that part personally.
But I used to always try to make my drum parts as complex as possible, trying to never repeat a phrase or fill, and as I’ve gotten older I’ve realized that playing like that kind of takes away from the rest of the song. It’s cool to do stuff like that occasionally, but having restraint and playing simple beats is what’s best for a song a lot of the time. I can’t imagine this song with a crazy complex beat, it wouldn’t have nearly as much power.
