Liked your comments. This is towards the beginning pod the album where he’s trying to decide to commit to his “quest”.
The middle calmer section, to me, is him trying to imagine what it would be like to ignore his “quest” (part of the first and last parts of the song) and stay in his calm and content life.
Love the unraveling comment. It’s him losing his mind.
The Raw screaming portion (one of my favorite portions of the entire album) was him trying to ask his wife to come with him on this “quest” but she won’t come. He struggles with this idea that everything is “but stone and silver”/“all we hold dear must disintegrate”/all things are subject to the “winds of change” and applying these ideas to his relationship with his wife. There’s a few songs where he expresses this and struggles throughout.
Thanks for your thoughts Bryan and anyone who reads/comments.

I totally love this band, I find this record majestic. You should also check out Ulcerate - Withered and Obsolete. These guys are mastermind at writing dissonant, technical, death metal with some post-metal elements. Their drummer is also one of the best in the extreme scene.

You really need to give the album a front-to-back spin. It's truly incredible. You should do Westward Bound I - The Lantern, The Exile I - The Razors Edge or maybe Unending Waltz. One of the best parts of the album is Gareth's spoken-word bits, they're very well executed/performed and I'm not usually a big fan when it comes to that. Regardless of the sustainability of techniques used, his vocal performance is one of the greatest I've ever heard. Between the incredible lyrics and the fact that you can just hear in his voice that he gave this album everything he had, really powerful stuff.

14:00 interesting.. i think there is something to be said here about how the expectation of the rythm section to uphold the time of the music. Its weird because if you just let the vocals lead you in the section discussed its easy to follow but if you let the rythm section lead you it does indeed all fall apart. Its like the anti djent (where djent usually has a strong 4 4 rythm to lead you and the vocals and guitars expand around that rythm) here the vocals and guitars hold the rythm and the percussion and base expand around that. Its good shit

love this band, the song Westward Bound part I - The Lantern starts out super mellow with pure spoken word vocals, and gradually he goes from soft speaking to yelling, to growled vocals in a smooth transition, and then theres another classical acoustic, almost Spanish inspired mid section. fantastic album

Their self titled song from The Man With No Face is one of the most cohesive 20 minute tracks ever. Never feels like it's meandering away from being this one song, yet never boring either. Amazing feat.

17:01 yep it sure is. I listened to this album several times without reading the lyrics or even thinking about it. But u nailed it right away. Wait till u get like half way through the album. The character starts to slip into a bit of madness. He has moments of doubt then finds clarity and resolve, then doubt even worse because his clarity fell apart. The whole album I'm like....Ok is this truly about his struggle and search for God or it just an allegory for other struggles in their life. Still don't know the answer to that

Always been a huge fan of the 2 voices. The growls and the cleans in the same song. It keeps you on your toes and the energy is just awesome.
I do recommend one of my favorite bands in this genre. Scar Symmetry. If you haven't already...
Pre- Holographic Universe.. not to say the currsnt stuff isn't just as awesome. The singer from this band Christian Alvestam is also multi talented in the realms of what Mike Patton does he does for the melodeath genre. Even has and 80s synth pop cd. Since then the band had to replace him with 2 singers. LOL. Christian went onto his new outfit Solution 45. Highly RECOMMEND! And Per Nilson the guitarist is one of my heros next to Satch and Vai.

I wonder if you've heard a band called The Dear Hunter? They are way on the kind of Indie/emo side of prog. There are some heavy elements, but it's far from metal. I think you might really love them from a compositional standpoint. The bulk of their discog is made up of 5 acts which all connect and tell the story of a boy named Hunter through the era of WW1. It's a must-listen for any music lover. Casey Crecenzo, the lead singer, I think also employs some less than healthy vocal techniques. I think it shows live, but I haven't seen them too much live so idk if it's a regular thing for his voice to sound strained. Their more commercial album is Migrant, and they also have a collection of EPs called The Color Spectrum. It's all really phenomenal, easy listening prog music. I think it's the type of prog you could share with anyone. My introduction to the band was a song called "Is There Anybody Here" so I suggest that. It's more ballady than most of the rest of their stuff but its great and has a really satisfying guitar solo.
