Haste The Day: Jimmy Ryan Tour Dad | Labeled: The Stories, Rumors, & Legends of Tooth & Nail Records

  • Jimmy Ryan, the original lead singer of Haste The Day, is in a rare category. His band was a breakout hit in the pinnacle of the Tooth & Nail/Solid State golden age, but Jimmy was NOT a Tooth & Nail kid. The rest of his band certainly were as they were youth group kids from a nice Indianapolis suburb when they joined forces with Jimmy. He was considerably older than them and, for better or worse, became the "tour dad.” Jimmy may not have grown up as a Tooth & Nail kid, but he was a perfect fit to continue the tradition of Solid State bands who would bring the intensity to the mission of mosh and ministry; he even ended up working at the label for a season!

Thank you for the interview. Watched it with my friend who is just a few years out from the drug street life. My friend is a metal guitarist and he said, “I love this guys smile and he is real.” It reached into his heart with the love of Jesus.

It makes me sad that he feels that regret for leaving, but he still handles it with so much grace to this day. Man I miss Haste the Day

All those years ago I had an online friend that sent me a copy of Burning Bridges through the USPS. I still have that copy to this day and am so thankful for the music Jimmy and the boys made. I couldn't have gotten through what I've been through if not for them. I would love to just shake the hands of the men responsible for me still being here. THANK YOU for this interview. It was so random I just searched tonight for HAste the day interviews and this came up. Definitely a sign. Thank you JIMMY. For everything. Love from Tennessee.

Jimmy will always hold the torch as the king of metal vocals in my book. An unmistakable an undeniably unique sound. Unfortunately, I didn't come into the metal scene until around 2005/2006, it truly hurts my soul that I never got to see Jimmy Ryan with Haste the Day. I just recently had a conversation with a good buddy of mine about this and its a pretty big miss for both of us. So, for now, I've ordered two copies of Haste the Day vs. Haste the Day and will be scheduling a watch party. This was a great interview. It's always fun to learn about your favorite musicians, where they come from, and where they've been.

Haste the Day was one of my favorite bands growing up. I fortunately was able to see Haste the Day once when I drove 6hours to see them in Denver during the fairwell tour. It was such a great show. Still plan on haste the day lyrics tattooed on me.

I was at the solid state tour- April 1,2004 at the Emerson Theater in Indianapolis…..best show I’ve ever seen, and I think the tickets were like 11 bucks. I would pay $500 to see that same lineup (though HTD was 3rd in the lineup that night as I recall)

I miss Haste The Day and enjoyed every album that was put out. Still my favorite band. Those were some cool stories about how God brought you all together and how much Mark had a hand in bringing your music to us. I'm curious why you don't want to release the lyrics to your Trenches music.

Jimmy is a fascinating person. For when Keech comes on, please lean into why he and Mike don't want to do even singular shows anymore for HTD crowds.

I’ll never forget the 2 times I met Jimmy Ryan. The first Time was in Portland Oregon in 2002 I believe by the venue called The Meow Meow. Haste The Day was “nobody”-they’d just signed and released an album they were touring on. Nobody really knew them. But their performance was tight and catchy. They grew quick. My experience with Jimmy was when I was talking to them pre show and he invited me upstairs to sit with them and even share their tour meal Lasagna. One thing I remember to is when I saw that lasagna it looks like the worst most grossest terrible thing ever, and that venue was like the pit of hell typical disgusting dark, black, dreary metal indie music venue (many of which that you would find in Portland). Jimmy genuinely loves people. He talks to you like you’re already one of his close friends. He looks at you like you are important. Jimmy really blessed my heart and there was something so loving and genuine and brotherly comrade about him that has blessed my heart and even now 20 years later still brings me to tears. Jimmy was a guy I met a second time and he remembered our first interaction from years before. He was excited to tell me about his cool new hair color Lol. He was a really fun guy and when he performs he looks at you in the eyes like he is speaking to you genuinely. He is one-of-a-kind and a blessing to the earth. I pray he is still being used today to love on humanity with the love of God‘s heart inside himself. -Jesse

Thanks for being an inspiration over the years Jimmy. Found HTD back in '03 when I was a twerp and followed the adventure until Coward. I can't relate how many bands from that time ended up being a let down in some way or another, but HTD was always genuine.
You guys weren't selling out, or trying to murder your estranged wives, or suddenly revealing that you were pretending for years to gain an audience.
I appreciate your honesty and heart for the project.

44:14 😭Understandable but feels heavy. Life takes turns and you never know what's going to happen until you look back. You guys can still make another album and get everyone together like you did in Coward. Everyone loved it. Stephen is a badass too, but you both have unique aspects

The record store tour mentioned was my first live hardcore show. Somewhere in SE Michigan. Ann Arbor or Ypsilanti I believe. What a time to be into hardcore music!

I have to disagree with jimmy. Haste the day is my all time favorite band periodt…but only with jimmy. Maybe they branched out musically after jimmy left, but the sound was never the same. The guitar/singing Melodie’s weren’t as great, transitions were shit. I couldn’t even listen to the albums (I just tried again). Such a shame because I loved the music so much and I am extremely picky.
