  • In this video, we're looking at the ultimate, flexible battery solution I've found for the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 6K Pro. This is the best one I've come across for multiple camera packages that isn't customized solely for the BMPCC 6K Pro - so you can grow with it and use it in the future as well as with other camera packages. It's been working well for me over the last month but let me know if you have other preferred solutions! I'd love to learn about alternatives as well :)

    Stumbled upon your video and while I did not really learn anything as I've been using the 6K rigged out since it came out, I can appreciate the time/effort you put into producing a high quality video to share your experience which aligned with mine. Recently upgraded to the Pro which I plan on keeping light/compact since I already have my 6k rigged, and maybe tossing the Pro on a Glidecam to be able to get running/moving shots. Subbed and looking forward to your channel growth.

    I use a Makita Tools battery and a cheap battery adapter for my BMPCC4K rig. Batteries don't need to be expensive and I already have a lot of Makita cordless tools. I use a Makita Rapid charger to charge the batteries. The BMPCC-4K camera can accept anywhere from 12-20 volts as an input and the battery adapter uses the same locking system as the tools.

    Love this! We actually just made a video about rigging our 6k Pro's with SmallRig accessories. If you're shooting more than like, 40 mins, v-mount is the way to go! We're a little more gorilla style and just tape it to our rods haha but maybe we should get a proper mount.

    • @JacobVossFilms
      @JacobVossFilms  3 года назад +1

      Absolutely! V mount imo is the way to go if you’re planning to use it with different camera systems as well! Very versatile. Haha you might want to ;) but hey if it works, it works

  • @quirkypurple
    @quirkypurple 3 года назад +1

    Somewhere in between V-mount option and the standard camera NPF option is to get an NPF-adapter plate. This will allow you to use the large batteries.
    What some viewers may not know is there are large NPF batteries that go up to around 8 or 9 thousand mAh giving you about twice the amount or more of the standard NPF internal use batteries.
    It's just another option. I think V-mount is probably the best but I'm toying with the idea of using all NPF batteries as I have some for my lights. I don't use my lights as often but like the idea that my batteries work on my camera as well as my LED lights.
    SmallRig do NPF battery adapter plates.
    Great video, btw.

    • @JacobVossFilms
      @JacobVossFilms  3 года назад

      In theory this is totally correct however, from real world experience, the VMount to NPF adapters don’t always work well and sometimes give inconsistent results. Now, I actually do keep an NPF to VMount in my kit with some NPFs as a last resort but it can spit out some weird voltages and potentially shorten the life of your gear.
      With enough research though I’m sure you could make it work without issues just letting people know it might not be for everyone.
      Thanks for watching and good thinking!

    Great video. I'm still rocking a bunch of lpe6 batteries for my bmpcc4k. As a backpack review channel I need to be as packing friendly as possible. I really want a better battery solution, but vmounts are just too big. Npf would be a good alternative, but I haven't made a final decision yet.

    • @JacobVossFilms
      @JacobVossFilms  3 года назад

      No shame in needing a compact solution! NPFs are nice for the 6K Pro because they're natively used but you could look at a Grip battery for your 4k - I know some models use NPFs inside the grip (but it also might make it bulkier than you want)- or even the battery grip for the 4K from Blackmagic themselves

    Do you power other stuff like monitors, and/or EVF, etc. of this plate (or the battery itself)? I have the 4K, along with the portkeys BM5II. And I have, on occasion powered both of the same battery/plate that I currently have. But I still see people saying that the best option is to just power them separately. In order to avoid cooking the HDMI port. Again, no issues so far. But I would rather avoid the risk if I can.

    • @JacobVossFilms
      @JacobVossFilms  2 года назад

      So the issue you're describing is basically when the positive pin of the DTap port hits first and the electricity needs somewhere to go - so it often completes the circuit by using the SDI or HDMI and burns out those ports. Someone I know had that exact monitor and it got friend from what I suspect is this exact issue.
      Now, I usually power everything off the same battery but you have to be careful if you do this. I follow, first in, last out with the power,. Basically plug in the power to both your camera and the monitor before ever hooking up the signal cable whether its HDMI or SDI. Once all of the power cables are fully connected, you should be fine. You're just trying to not have the positive pin of a DTap hit first so if they're all already plugged in, you will have no issues. This is advice that was just released from Arri as well as Red.
      If you want to be extra safe, use Lentequip SafeTaps - they're smart DTap Connectors that don't let this kind of thing happen (although I would still follow the above instructions, it's just an extra layer of security that I've wired onto all of my DTap Cables - especially for my monitor and camera).

    • @j.oakley9588

      @@JacobVossFilms right on. Thanks man! I too have heard of the proper sequence of operations for start and shut down…which I have used. Again, no issues…yet. But I still keep seeing folks say that it’s still a risk and to just avoid it if at all possible and use separate power sources. So I’m like “what the hell, is this the correct way or not?!” I didn’t know if maybe this plate is designed with controls in place to prevent ground loop issues…regardless of whether or not the camera and monitors are powered up correctly or not.

    • @JacobVossFilms
      @JacobVossFilms  2 года назад +1

      Yeah, the messaging has definitely been more confusing than it needs to be. And I t’s good you’re questioning it but, on set no one uses separate batteries, everything is powered from one so my thought is just to follow whatever the professionals are practicing. Just my two cents on what we’re doing with Arri, Sony, Red, etc on set. Just do the correct order and you’ll be 100% good 👍

    You forgot one more! I have the 6K G2. I know no ND filters built in. I use a portable phone charger. Small rig makes a special grip. I have a 25,000 milamp one it can last up to around 5-6 hours this depends of course if you leave it on and plugged in even just plugged in and off it still uses up a lot of battery. I have a two 15 mm rails using small rig cage only half cage with top handle and side grip. The battery is much smaller not in the way, and cost about 1/3 of the Vmount. I was thinking of going with V/mount but once you buy the battery, and then the plate it's like $150-$200 more dollars and my battery just cost $20. Again the Vmount has advange like if you wanted a second monitor you could use that battery to power that as well. Longer life I'm sure.

      It's not too bad honestly - I check on the battery periodically with the push button checker on most V-Mounts and on the camera I make sure to have the voltage read out (just tap the battery logo and it shows up in the right corner instead of the battery) because I know the 6K Pro cuts out around 13V. It's pretty similar to how I would check battery when rigging up an Arri or Red so not bad once you're used to it.
