I'm in Europe, and frankly I opened your video just to know what Gold Mount was, I thought was a brand new battery mount/tech...astonished to discover that is a well established standard, I admit I had NEVER EVER heard of it before your video.

Yes as an European I always heard of gold mount on American RUclips channels but never seen any in real life
UK camera Crew here, I haven’t had the same issues you’ve described. I know that trainees sometimes struggle to get the Vlocks on properly and panic when the SATSTATION isn’t powering back on 😂. But I’ve you’ve got the knack I don’t see as many issues. Also Bebop plates and batts are the best thing since sliced bread.
I can say from personal experience and having to repair numerous pieces of equipment that a v mount battery is okay as long as the battery is always vertical with the pin connection at the bottom. When they are mounted horizontally it's in my experience that over time the weight of the battery twisting in the mount will damage the pins. I had several sets of LED lights at a TV studio that all had to be upgraded to Gold mount after we had repaired them a few times previously by replacing the mounts. Gold mount maybe a little more expensive but in the long run it's definitely more reliable.
Yep 100%, in a vertical, non-moving configuration, V-Mounts work fantastically! It's just whenever you have to have a good amount of movement or are turning the camera in a direction other than right side up that its an issue. Great battery mount for lighting fixtures too
@@JacobVossFilms we had several sets of LED panels with V mounts and only the ones where the batteries were mounted horizontally had issues. I ended up just upgrading them all with gold mount plates.

Absolutely. I see a good amount of people on here starting out on V-Mount because that’s all they see on RUclips but I think they would choose differently if someone showed them this option first - it really is the more preferable option if you’re in the US (also it’s so much more solid)

Yes I just ordered some reytric 155 gold mount batteries for my BMPCC 6k pro.
I noticed it with my V mount, but I didn't try the gold mount, so I guess I didn't know better. It does look better.
I hate when there's more than one standard and not for a good reason.
I'm glad sony made that because V mount is great for other applications, like quick release for a camera plate.
Norway here. Alot of productions here mainly rely on Gold Mount. Just for the reasons you have stated. And they seem to also be of a higher quality then most V mount solutions

yeah v mount is what's used on most accessories (transmitters, lights, etc), but agree gold mount is more rugged in all directions. But with a decent mount I've found no issues with V, and that is weird how your 3rd batteries always seemed to have problems... Also I'm not generally bumping and bruising my gear either, which may happen a lot more on busy sets in dynamic environments.

As somebody who has switched from a largish number of v mounts to gold mounts, I can confirm that the v mount locking system is inferior. While handheld operating, I’ve had far too many batteries inadvertently pop off of the back of cameras. Maybe with smaller mirrorless systems it’s not as big of a deal, but on larger cinema cameras, the additional forces from weight definitely make it a problem. Interestingly, I think RED popularized V mount because they didn’t offer an OEM gold mount plate on their cameras. You had to go to third parties like Wooden Camera/IDX, and that tied up the DC power port that’s shared with the AC adapter, eliminating a hot swap option. The native RED V mount plates powered the camera through the rear pins on the brain and left the lemo open.
A piece of advice for somebody making the switch, buy adapter plates. They’ll let you use your old V mount batteries on gold mount plates while you slowly upgrade your inventory. They also work on most chargers, so you don’t have to drop thousands all at once updating everything simultaneously.
This is a good tip and something I know a few people doing right now (I even have one). It’s too bad so much of the RUclips community pushes V-Mounts so vehemently when there’s such a superior option. C’est La Vie
Would you recommend the same Shape plate in Gold mount?
Honestly have never used one but I think it’d be bound to not be as bad as the V-Mount version due to the better design of gold mount
I have been using gold mount for years. The little pair of gold pins on the left comes loose every time I fly with my equipment or drive long distances. Which has resulted in me having to reschedule a shoot because they were lost at one point. And now I'm dealing with a 5th battery becoming useless. Draining in 15 minutes and me panic buying more batteries. These are juicebox gold mount batteries not Chinese ones. I'm going to switch to v mount and see if I like it. I use the ursa mini pro g2. It has seemed all filming equipment ie lighting is geared towards v mounts. Let alone the batteries are often 30% cheaper atleast.
Ah, those pins usually screw back in, they do loosen over time if you don’t tighten them as with different plate tolerances they will be pulled on different directions. I believe you can also buy replacements if you need them.

Yeah voltage should be totally fine, just make sure the charger you get can support your countries grid voltage

@@weeardguy well, I got a gold mount by mistake and is stuck with it, and I can just use a normal traveller EU-converter for the charger. I can easily get batteries too.
@@gerthenriksen8818 Do you even need a converter? Most chargers have switchmode-powersupplies and ever more are well capable to work between 90 and 256 Volt AC or so, at any frequency from 48 to 62 Hz or zo.
The batteries itself won't be such a problem I guess, but walk into a rental-store for a camera or light and I bet they will have to convert it on the fly for you to a Gold-Mount if you mention you don't have V-mounts. I could be completely wrong (and won't be afraid to say so if I am ;) ) but most times I visit the websites of such stores, I usually see 'out of stock', 'request quote' or 'Contact us for delivery-times'.
Actually I donno why people say IDX is a good brand, because its annoyingly only charges on its own charger, which is super annoying when you have big multi fast charger and totally not able to charge IDX on them. And also most of the sets I have been its not the prefered IDX battery for the camera itself, but just used for monitors as issue of reliability of the connection. While have working on sets with many other brands vmount batteries never had any issues. As most important when slotting in the v-mount head the statifying click that its secure. With B-mount have to say I don't really prefer the angle to mount as just not feel as easy to do. And with v-mount can easily swap battery while the camera is on the operator shoulder and B mount need to move it away to get space to move it out without bumping into the operators head.
Very interesting. I'm still not convinced with either system but mostly investing on NP-F batteries, and soon enough the NP-F990 with 11,600mAh and 85.8wh each (14.8v with dual battery, V-mount plate). Much cheaper and works well for my lighting. Also not a fan of running the camera solely from an external battery, but using the USB-C connections inside the Sony a7S III to keep it juiced up is a more preferable approach as if something goes wrong the camera doesn't go black or worse damage it. And for those challenging situation maybe duct-tape the V-Mount batteries so they don't come off.😉
Gold mounts are definitely the preferred broadcast standard in my observations
Broadcast for sure, Film applications as well, every feature and commercial I’ve been on has used gold-mount
the mess that is 14.4 vs 26V V mount is insane, there is no reason 2 different voltages should share the same pin config other than a common ground.
I really hope given the new B mount looks to have fixed the voltage and mount issues that most new gear moves to it in the next 1-2 years.
I'd have to ask around but at least from what I've seen most of the smaller to midsize sets use V mounts while the larger ones tend to go gold mount in the US.
I don't see any reason why equipment will move primarily to 26 Volt batteries as most cameras just aren't that power hungry and will be satisfied with a normal V-mount battery. Lights, and especially BIG lights, will use the 26 or even 48 Volt batteries, although I must admit that I only know Bebob as a manufacturer of a 48 Volt battery. But considering it's a 1600 Wh thing or so, it's also not something many will invest in...

@@gdrriley420 Yeah, well I was talking about the stuff that is on V-mount now (basically all broadast-stuff) and that most likely won't switch as there's just no use. That cinema-equipment is apparently transitioning to 26V is no surprise, as the lights used are usually far more beefy than those used for interview/documentary style work. I can't imagine the cameras being that more power hungry but it's more likely to be up to all the accesories they will also power that they go for a 26 Volt supply. It could also be ARRI would like to earn the extra buck by having everyone to buy new batteries...

@@gdrriley420 Yeah duh, ofcourse they are, as that is the US. The US predominantly uses Gold Mount, while basically the rest of the world uses V-mount.

They definitely are an investment, I wouldn’t super cheap out on batteries as they connect up to your camera and I’ve seen bad batteries kill cameras before so maybe just wait and save a bit if you can

Bro I'm really struggling to make a choice here between Gold and V mount. Your clip has been a crucial piece. V mount seems to be so popular in Canada, and gold seems somewhat harder to find, less accessories (like I really want that smallrig V mount plate). And I kinda feel obliged to choose that seeing the amount of flexibility. Idk I kinda want to hear from you that everything will be alright and my V mount batteries won't kill me while I sleep. After seeing your clip and reading online from a bunch of pros it seems like batteries will commit suicide by jumping out of their locks while I'm not paying attention.
Also I have Godox lights atm, I don't wanna pay for adapting plates, I don't want that hassle. Maybe in the future I'll sell the whole system and buy gold mount aputures as I mature professionally (I was thinking of buying gold mount now to do that in 1-2 years)... idk. Maybe I must experience for my self the pain of V mount so I can feel good about getting gold aputures in the future ?
At the same time it feels like buying for my needs now (v mount) and dealing with gold mount later as I make more money, it's a better choice. I just got offered some commercial jobs and given how much they pay, looks like money won't be much of an issue in 1-2 years.
So its really 2 parts, if you plan on staying on smaller self contained productions for the lifetime of the batteries (~2 years) and not moving to any bigger projects than you're totally golden, but if you do plan to AC any larger projects or even work with guys that work more on larger projects than it would be advantageous. I know that even in Canada most major productions will use Gold-Mount especially close to Vancouver. Now as to the second question, lighting - usually people don't like to swap batteries between camera and lighting department, they tend to have their own sets (also a lot of lighting fixtures prefer or require 26v batts). So for that, the main problem I've heard of is the different configurations of the pins of the V-Mount batteries and their 26v standards. I believe gaffer and gear has a video on that. Mounting-wise, V-Mounts are fine for lighting fixtures. You don't really need gold, the only benefit would be interoperability with camera department which really doesn't happen all too often but I can be a saving grace in a pinch.
TLDR, If you're on bigger sets, even in Canada, I would recommend goldmount for camera department, for lighting though, it really doesn't offer too many advantages

I have 12 godox s60 and 6 vl150 lights, all with v mount, and all my batteries and chargers are gold mount😄

Yeah, I get the feeling that that's how a lot of international film people think - its funny because I see so many videos about V-Mount here on RUclips but have only been on 2 big sets that have use them here in the US all the rest have been goldmount

I don't fuck with V-Mounts. My friend was shooting a doc on Quentin Tarantino and he did. And since it was digital he was doing all this stuff, and the vmount failed and he lost ALL his footage. Not that scene, ALL. Because it arc'd back and fried the camera. R fucking I P and that killed the production. And Quentin moved to IZREAL so RIP! Never fuck with v-mounts.
Plot twist: I use NP-F batteries for everything. Camera, monitors, lights, wireless T/R units, etc.

Gold mount is a clear winner if you live outside Europe, but here the only thing I can get my hands on without getting ripped of by Anton Bauer and put on their 2 month back order list, is V mount batts!...
That's a real bold statement: Europe is profoundly a V-mount place and you will either get a 'no' from pro AV-suppliers if you want equipment that accepts Gold Mount batteries (because they hardly sell/rent it) or they will give you a special price because you want something specific.
Gold Mount hardware is usually more expensive in The Netherlands (where I live) than V-mount, just because there's hardly a market for here. The same goes for the rest of Europe.

There's a great debate on the security of both mounts, so I'm not starting on that. (It's no use either, because my equipment only uses V-mount, Gold Mount is more expensive here and I would have to invest in a different charger, batteries and plates.

The V-Mount plate that comes on the Universal battery plate from Tilta is an official IDX V-Mount Plate - look at the product in the video, literally says “IDX”
