- I've lived in a Ford Transit for over 3 years. I should be able to easily survive in a U-haul van for 17 days, right? Wrong! It was brutal...😭

Cracked up at the apple juice pee 🤣 Yuka - part time MTB van lifer, part time comedian 😁
Tell me that's really apple juice!! 🤮
Did you think I drank real pee?
@@VanGirlYuka hahahahahhahahahaha.... LoL no.... Appy appears the same as well 🥴🥴
@@VanGirlYuka nope, cause it wasnt steaming. pee is hot and its cold there obviously. real pee would steam when its "fresh". lol
If you meet enough alt.people, it won't take long to find some who actually do drink their pee for health--its not as rare as you think, and I fully believed you were. Glad you don't.
"If you want to support me doing something stupid", Love it!
My wife and I tried out vanlife in a u-haul just like that for a month with two big dogs. We loved it. That is what convinced my wife to let me buy a van. We had much better sleeping temperatures though.
I bet you were well prepared! I really underestimated how hard living in a U-haul would be like. Glad your wife enjoyed van life too👍
can you get to the cab from the back?
I'm glad you are so honest at the end of this! Too many people pretend they are having fun when.... they can't wait to get back to their own beds. Living in a van always sounds more fun than it is in reality. And it always costs more than you think it will. Love the video by the way, your editing is pro level, its such fun to watch.
I appreciate your positive attitude towards Life and being so adjustable with the current situations. People like you will always stay happy as they don't have to complain about anything. ❤️❤️. Great kudos for your efforts and another great video ❤️
It was fun! But after 5-6 days without good sleep, things got tough 😪 sleeping is super important in a healthy life 👍
Yuka, that was your absolute best video ever! Frggn hilarious!!!
Lol thanks 😁❤️
1 really good sleeping bag solves the problem with the cold. I have a sleeping bag which has a comfort zone from -10°C to +5°C. You can sleep with boxers and shirt at -10°C in it, no problem.
Love your videos! I did stuff like this when I was 17 to 30 and had a great time, and have tons of great memories traveling around Hong Kong, the Philippines, and North America. I still love to travel - but now we "Camp" in Condo's and Hotels. These modern luxuries are 1000 times better after all those years sleeping in cars, Hostels, and sometimes right on the beach somewhere.
You did it for a very long time! I feel like sleeping in a normal car might have been warmer🤔 it’s nice we can sleep wherever we want. By the beach is a awesome place to spend a night✨
Ive camped twice now for 10 days each in a U Haul on a solo BC bike vacation and I definitely can confirm its quite cold, even in August/September! You are brave for trying it in the winter lol.
Even in summer?! I thought it world be super hot…
@@VanGirlYuka not over night, most nights were single digits still
@Hate Committee the uhaul rental vans I got were almost brand new, very reliable. Yes you can lock the doors from the inside no problem. I just left the windows shut throughout the night, with the larger air volume it doesn’t steam up too much compared to sleeping in your car. I did open doors to let the air flow through throughout the days, mostly for the smelly mtb gear, but never needed to at nights.
@Hate Committee just don’t leave the car running, and assuming you are parking outside even that wouldn’t be an issue
This video is gold Yuka! And great reminder that pee is fine to drink the first time through you 😉
It’s a great life lesson just in case we get lost in desert 👍✨
If the van is a-rockin', don't come a-knockin'! hehehe
You could use a rubber hot-water bag (Thermophor) to pre-heat the sleeping bag and warm your cold feet. Preferably with a cloath coat, so the inital hot bag doesn't feel uncomfortable on your (bare) feet. If it cools during the night, it will probably wake you once, so you remove it from the then warm sleeping bag and continue sleeping. Even the water inside can be reused and reheated. Just don't buy the cheapest one, so you don't wake up to a wet sleeping bag. Especially if you have trouble warming up your cold feet you will really appreciate a rubber hot-water bag, you will be cozy in no time.
Funny and entertaining video, you always bring a smile to my face. Loved your solution with the "tent", :)
Best of wishes from austria.
I was seriously considering buying the hot water bag. We love the metal hot water bottle in Japan😁✨
Thanks for doing the test for those who might try the U-haul at some point. 😁
If you had your tent with you, you could have set it up inside your van for warmth if it’s supposed to be warmer than in the van. 😂
Someone said put a tent inside the van. This is an excellent idea, especially if you put the Reflectex under the tent first. Then the other person who said use a -10C sleeping bag (or maybe a -20 C for Vancouver) gave the other good idea. I once had such a sleeping bag, and it kept me warm outside, in Boston Massachusetts, on Chrismas Eve. I arrived there in the evening, and the airport would not let me stay indoors, so I had to wait outside for a taxi. I sat in that sleeping bag for an hour. I was warm and comfortable. That was in 1983, when winters were still very cold.
LOL the things we do to get immigration documents. Hopefully it doesn't take too long to get your new card!
LOL, I knew the air mattress was a bad idea, those things are super cold. I think the cheap alternative would have been to get a bunch of cardboard boxes to line the floor, and then use more to make a smaller sleeping enclosure for yourself (or use a fridge box). Cardboard is half decent insulator. Also, second hand stores for blankets.
I thought about cardboards too. I should’ve tried it before getting reflectix…🤔
Love your honesty and positive attitude!
Eric is a slow driver! You're a tough girl that gets it done 💪
Just met you and now we are friends in my head. I'm thinking of purchasing a retired Uhaul to turn into a Camper Van and I really enjoyed watching you navigate the waters or cold in your case. :)
Im glad you survived! Looking forward to your next adventure.
It is one of the best adventure movies I ever saw and propably my first youtube comment, congrats, you are awesome.
Thank you for the comment😁❤️
You won't know unless you try. Since you are willing to rough it and see what (U-Haul) van life is like, props to you for toughing it out for so long. I don't think I would have lasted with such minimal conditions, your real van would have suited me just fine, because HEAT! LOL. Another great vid showing us yet another perspective of VGY life. Thanks for sharing.
I love watching you guys but today you had me on the floor laughing thanks so much!
So funny, does seem like a bad idea in the Canada winter and basically a tin can! I stayed in my ProMaster many nights while building it and working so I know your feelings! Thanks for the great video again, you guys always make me smile!
Yuka, you should try to put the reflective beneath the airobed, that should keep the air inside the bed warm’isch .
I did🥲 I put the reflectix beneath the air mattress and on top. Getting an air mattress is my biggest mistake there💔
@@VanGirlYuka Yeah, the air inside those thin walled mattresses gets so cold! My most comfortable cold weather sleeping, without sweating, is to wear warm comfortable clothes, and have a lightweight but warm comforter, on a foam pad.
I camp in a dodge caravan on vacation and love it, got a cot so I still have lots of storage in the van, fits 2 bikes. It did take 3 or 4 cold nights to figure out how to stay warm but once I did I would sleep like a baby that's was biking all day
Great video Yuka! And good tips on how to survive in a pinch. Your set up was good, I did the same thing when I visited Oregon two years ago..
i love your commitment... on and off the bike!
That was awesome. Great storytelling and the pee test was hilarious.
To go #1 I use a wide mouth metal water bottle. It last longer and I recommend to also use a wide mouth Gatorade bigger bottle that can be used in a pinch. I use those tent camping for years
This is my Favorite episode yet! 😊👍
Haha, we met a couple from Germany (being from Germany ourselves) in Whistler who did this as an alternative to an expensive RV. If I remember correctly they had to pay quite some money because they put a lot of miles on the van though going further north.
If you drive more than you estimated it costs almost twice times more 🤮 and I didn’t know that first
Love It!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! if you guys are ever back in the Seattle area.......the trails are being touched up and they are riding great! hope you guys have a great day
U R the best, Yuka!
I keep a collection of coffee-to-go cups (regular and large) to cope with bike parks that don’t have toilets. I’m an accomplished squatter, but I prefer kneeling in the truck to avoid . . . exposure.
A good idea may be to sleep in a vehicle in cold weather to first buy a Zero Degree Sleeping bag. 2nd, also get an air mattress for comfort. 3rd if needed also buy a tent that will fit inside the van and folds out with no pipes to hold it up. Your body heat stays in the tent and keeps you warm. 4th, of course get solar rechargeable LED lamp that also takes batteries. 5th, a container with a cover wide enough to pee in and do #2 if necessary. 6th, always have at least a few days of canned food and water in case you get stuck in the vehicle for whatever reason. 7th, buy a solar charged phone charging port station. 8th, the green bottle Chlorox Spray. That freshens any stinking situation. 8th, a large clean towel. 9th extra Sox and underwear 10th, a large backpack to put all this stuff. 11th toothpaste and tooth brush. ✔ DONE.
I forget one more..... toilet paper. Your Welcome.
Bless you!
Awesome thanks for the information sending you peace 🕊️ love 😘 happiness ❤️ hugs straight from San Diego county California USA
"Ahhhh.... FRESH!"
Fun video! Maybe putting reflectix on top of the mattress would have worked?
Could you lock the van door from the inside?
“If you want to support me doing something stupid…” I cackled. I loved this video, thank you hahaha
Van Girl YU-Haul-Ka!
So many gems in this episode.
That pee scene...! LOL!
Van Girl Yu-Haul-Ka! I’ve never thought about it. Good one 👍✨
great video, and you crazy!!!! thanks for the video
I learned a bit from this. Thanks
Cant believe i saw this recommended video😆
"if you want to support me doing something stupid..." SUBSCRIBED
😂 that was a hoot! So cute. I was thinking about doing that and you brought up some things to think about that we're very helpful lol. It does seem to have a lot of unexpected expenses 🤔
It was fun to watch and made me laugh!! Ty❤
OMG OMG hilarious :D Survivor mode - tips & tricks should be here on regular :D
I think a cheaper option to keep warm would of been to buy a "buddy heater" instead of all that extra stuff like reflectics and extra blankets. just remember to keep the window cracked a little bit. also you can cook on top of the buddy heater as well. Just look up steve wallis another fellow canadian who does stuff like this all the time.
Hilarious! Really enjoyed your unusual adventure.
So awesome
lol you guys should try! It’s gonna be super fun to watch🤣
a cool workaround could be to make an agreement with a heated parking spot in a commercial building. i did it back in LA, but it was not so cold there though anyway :)
Bout to be my life. I'm on a park bench for tonight tho
Very good video, thanks!
We can see how cold it is at 8:20 ! Can see your breath! 🥶
I think Inside van was colder than outside 😂
That was freaking great!
This is much better than a hotel......that was sarcasm.
Did you just drink that!? I know it's sterile but I recommend whisky as a U-Haul warmer🤣instead. Love your gumption Yuka👋
She is so awesome.
I love your contents
sleeping pad on top of air mattress!
A one piece Tyvek type bunny suit is cheap and provides great insulation and breathe-ability
I wonder if anyone thought you actually drank your own urine lol 😂. Awesome video 😎 💪
i think you shouldve gone to a goodwill and gotton some big blankets there and hang some up , great video the juice looked a bit too fresh
Those blankets I got in the van were from goodwill 😁 I should’ve gone there before I got the air mattress …
Weird thought but what if you set up a small tent… inside the van? Would it work has anyone tried this?
In the uk those devices are called she wee
Aw, Yuka - you could have lived in our shed. :)
❤Yuka, very informative, instruction about real trails and I adore your vocabulary, love to hear all your opinions, observations & review . . ..I hear ya, I mtbike too🇺🇲🌎🏜
love your vids!
Thanks ✨
Wow you are hardcore. So brave!
To be able to leave for 17 days and camping in a van.. sign me up! out here squeezing in rides between work. You are very blessed! Never forget that :)❤
This video is the best advertisement for staying in a hotel I've ever seen...
It was an adventure but not for money saving 🤔
@@VanGirlYuka It was very fun to watch your adventure! (Still glad it was you and not me though...)...
love it, best vid 👍👍
Eric turned Yuka into a little RUclipsr
This is so good 😂. The pee portion of the video 👌🏻😂
Air mattresses just soak up the cold , you need a warm layer on top before u lie on it
Legend 😂🙌🏼❤️
"fresh!!" 🤣
I laughed the entire time!
Yuka is very Cool!! and very possitive :)
Burn candles for heat
Actually, if I was forced to live in a U-Haul, I would find ways to do this much cheaper. I wouldn't do the insurance (unless it's mandatory). I wouldn't drive around much running up the gas bill or mileage bill, and the "comfort bill" is only paid one time, not on a monthly basis.
fun idea for a video!
What about setting up a tent inside the van?
I wish I had brought my tent😪 leaving the bc tent was my biggest mistake
Should have bought your self a 4 season sleeping bag for temps, down to -12.
That was great! I do have to wonder: Why did it take Eric 17 days to drive from California to Vancouver?
Stopping to bike at every nice area?
@@fillfreakin2245 and leave your wife freezing her butt off in a U-HAUL? Yuka is more tolerant than any of my ex's...
And also building a feature or two at Everstoke😁
@@VanGirlYuka ah... So a "content stop" as well. No worries.
Surprised no bike with you 😁 it's very expensive to be a bum there 🧐🤔
LOL, just call next time and we can find you a place, lots of “friends” here that will put you up for a few days. Or just park a rented Honda Element out front. 😋
What I learned is quickly short cut the misery and spending and get a hotel!!!
A cot is the best way to stay warm sleeping in a van. If youre a real baller, a cot plus a thermarest
She is too cute.
"EMERGENCY BRANKET"
Brilliant !! 😁🤣
Mmmm apple juice 🍎🍹
If you need to renew a permanent stay, its not permanent or? crazy😂😂 But cool and simple van life👌
Fun video
ユカさんって日本人ですよね?英語上手すぎです!!
ありがとうございます😁
People who are skilled at camping/bushcraft will tell you that an inflatable bed on a metal or stone floor will only get cold.
It's because the air inside the inflatable cell chills down to ridiculous temperatures. Don't worry, we've all done it...Once. :-)
Lesson learned 👍 many more lessons to learn 🤣
So in cold temperatures a foam pad beats something like therm a rest? I've really liked my 3 inch thick narrow air mattress for 3 season tent camping.
I feel like some of this is none of my business ! lol

Where do you guys stay at ? Local parking lots or different apps to help find locations ?
