      i built a bed very similar to this one in my previous apartment and i never used the space under it for anything else than storage but one day, i got very, very high on lsd and the 'secret nook' was the perfect hiding spot in that situation. 😊

    I really like this. I think a built in bunk bed is far superior to anything store bought. I was caught off guard with the comment about people thinking their mattresses will get moldy. I worry about dust, but never mold.

    Great video. I’ve seen many examples of this style of bed (see Never Too Small) but few that show how to build one. Another variation for adult bed, design the gap/ladder at the point where you’d naturally swing your legs around, rather than at end of bed, where you’d have to shimmy down. I love the cubby underneath- fun for sleepovers.

    I absolutely love the cubby underneath! I dream of one day owning a home so I can build things like this.
    I am a bit concerned about ventilation for the cubby, though - there doesn't seem to be any, except for the cut-out in the door handle?
    If a kid was hanging out in the cubby with the door shut, I imagine it'd get pretty stuffy before too long?

    Very nice, you tripled the floor space with the loft bed. The matching cut out handle was a good bit of design aesthetics, lovely.
    I would have done a few things differently:
    Make a swing out, latched bed rail to enable easy sheet changes. Guess who will be changing the sheets? You.
    Leave cubby spaces all over the headboard, using paracord to hold back things or netting, or a wood rail. Paint inside the cubby holes with multi color paints making color blocks. Then add some led lighting so that it becomes a giant display cabinet or toy/ book storage with fun colors. That was wasted space.
    The mold under the mattress is a real concern, as well as airflow for skin. You should cut the plywood up like Swiss cheese, esp on the hollow parts. Your insert is not enough. Any of us who travel in RVs know what mold can do. Don't fool yourself with that flimsy thing. You need slats.
    The colors and wall paper designs are very soothing and inducing to sleep, bravo!

    • @happilybeforeandafter
      @happilybeforeandafter  Месяц назад

      Yeah, changing sheets can be tricky. No mold issues so far, but I did think about drilling some holes in the plywood. Thanks for the ideas!

    The work you guys did is really amazing. I would say though, as a tip, to take all the nordli drawers out and coat the sides and back with an anti-mildew moldproof primer like zissner or something. Ive had a nordli bed for 3 years and it is fantastic for storage but I have noticed black coatings developing on the drawers, after a year, i thought it was dust and i was wiping it down often but it is mold. I reorganized my drawers and noticed it coating even some places on the inside of drawers. I searched the internet and lots of people are having this problem with the nordli drawers. I will need to take mine out and spray them with an anti-mold primer. I am highly allergic to mold (i think most peiple are) and have been congested while going to bed and waking up. I realized today its because my bed is growing mold in the drawers.

    2:04 It would've been great if you made each lower shelf deeper than the one over each one so that it looks like stairs instead of just a book case. I think your son would have felt safer climbing stairs then a bookcase where each one is the same depth. But to still keep things inside each shelf as if the same depth so that his feet wouldn't step on his things.

    The little details in your video helps so much! Stuff like telling us what kind of wood you got, what they're called. Even the small things like how you used a jigsaw to to carve out the handles were great for those have no idea what tool to use. Im in the process of cutting a few inches off an ikea loft bed and reinforcing it with some beams. It sounds simple but I was worried of getting it wrong. Your video has helped boost my confidence in it. I might even paint it now that I know about sanding it before painting. Thanks for the informative video!

    This is a really nice project. 💖
    I'm guessing to make it rent-friendly I suppose you could build the support directly on the furniture and perhaps some extra in the back to make it look "box" shaped?
    And perhaps skip the wallpaper and the top-storage shelf.
    Anyway! Given the weight of the bed, mattress and everything I can't imagine it would slide around even without being attached to the wall, and it'd be too wide to simply tip over.
    Was there any particular reason why you still decided to attach the bed to the wall, or did it simply save resources by not having to build the support like a "box" and simply let the wall take the weight instead?

    • @happilybeforeandafter

    This may seem odd but do you think this would be appropriate for an adult. I live in a prewar house with ceilings that are 13ft tall.
    Wondered if i could pull this project off but so that i can walk underneath the whole bed with a full sized door, as an office space for when i work from home? Do you think this would be doable or impractical due to the height of the bed?

    • @happilybeforeandafter
      @happilybeforeandafter  11 месяцев назад +2

      Maybe not as an IKEA hack because I don't think they make dressers that tall. I think it's possible to do what you're saying, but probably not practical for most adults. I would make sure to support it better using 4x4 posts.

      @Procrastimaker 7 месяцев назад +2

      It depends on your climate. Im my climate we definately get mould if we put a mtress on solid ply, but we just use a hole saw to cut a few holes and it gets enough airflow to not get mould

      Oh i just saw the decking tile for airflow, what a brilliant solution!!

    • @sarahbencken4318
      @sarahbencken4318 14 дней назад

      In humid climate it would be an issue but it can be put on slats instead, or holes could be drilled instead, as another commenter mentioned. Another option that may or may not be enough is using a mattress made of natural, breathable materials, or even putting pallets on top of the plywood, and then putting the mattress on top of that.
