    I'm old school ( and I'm really old too ! ), I have loved cooking on cast iron for years. So when I bought a griddle, I got a Blackstone, rolled steel because it's basically like cast iron. It's what I am comfortable with. To each their own. Men, that breakfast sure looked good.

    I have recently gone through the warranty process to replace my Sierra top after 1 year. I have used it almost daily here in Wyoming. The process was fairly easy. I had my receipt and all the necessary information. They did try to make me go through some processes first and actually sent me a link to one of your videos. However, I informed them that I had already tried everything. They then sent me a replacement top that should arrive today. I have been generally happy with this griddle but have had issues with hot spots and sticking almost since the beginning. I am still confused about how to keep this griddle from sticking. Perhaps I made the mistake like yall with the oils in the beginning. I'm aware that no non stick surface will last forever but hopefully I have better luck this time. The invoice amount for the replacement top said 55 dollars. I did not see the Sierra top for sale in their site so I'm not sure if that's what they sell them for. If so, that's not a terrible price to replace every so often if you want to keep using the non-stick. I'm going to say eventually that when I'm ready to fully replace my griddle next time that I would try the Blackstone instead. It will depend on how my experience with this 2nd Sierra top goes. I would love to see an updated video/ instructions on how to use and care for it as it seems there are conflicting instructions.

    I'm trying to decide between the rolled steel Blackstone and the ceramic-coated Pit Boss for my very first griddle. It will go pretty much unused for about four months (with a cover, but out in the elements from December through March). Plus, the summer in this area is often hot and humid. I also don't have a garage or shed for storage...so would the things I've mentioned tend to cause a rusting problem for either of these flat tops...or is keeping them properly clean and dry (and seasoned, for the Blackstone) all that's needed to avoid rusting (even under less than ideal circumstances?

    • @waltwins
      @waltwins  Год назад +2

      Hey fam!! Overall, storing properly and caring for them is going to be key. Storing the ceramic top longer periods is going to be much easier to care for, as the ceramic won’t deteriorate or rust over time. Hope this helps somewhat fam!!🔥🔥

    Thanks for posting this video. I live in Europe and it can be a lot more difficult to get flat top grills and a lot more expensive. I currently don't have a flat top but I am looking to get one, The Pitboss has been high on my list but after looking at both your and Neal's videos about having to change the top, It is going down the list. They may have great service in the US but in Europe, that may well be a different story.
    I currently use the griddle on my Masterbuilt gravity 800, I find it great and love it but it can be tough without zone areas. I know people may say because of the number of cooks you do will enhance problems but I cook outdoors 7 days a week sometimes more than once and on the griddle at least 5 cooks a week so it will get a lot of use.

    You mention the need for a "burn-off," yet I have read recent comments about NOT doing a burn-off...that very high temps can cause some damage to the ceramic coating (something about micro cracks). This may also apply to the high heat used to get that great crust on steaks and smash burgers. Do you have any updates regarding using high heat with the ceramic flat top?

    Adam & Brett... I happened to watch the video by The Flat Top King the other day regarding his Pit Boss griddle that he has issues with the surface. I have a Blackstone 17" E-Series griddle and I'm wondering if I may end up with similar issues since it has a ceramic surface also. I sure hope not. I really like the ability to cook on a griddle indoors when the weather here in Colorado is not conducive to being outside when there is snow or sub-teen temperatures or high winds. At least with my Blackstone 28" Range Top Combo griddle if the surface gets messed up I can always take my disk grinder with a wire wheel and strip the surface and start over seasoning it. I've had it close to three years now and have yet to feel the need to strip it down and re-season.

    Hi guys. I’m thinking of going with a Ultimate griddle over the BS because of ease of care and cleanup mostly. I have a question for you; I’m concerned about higher heat and warping. I want to make sure I get a good sear on a ribeye, and I heard you talk about turning the griddle on high while cooking smash burgers. Do I have to worry about warping the griddle if I use high to sear a steak? Is warping a worrisome problem?
    Thanks!

      Given the sound of crickets....I believe that speaks volumes. As a Sierra owner, these are expensive and if your like most and don't have sponsorship thru Pit Boss.....look elsewhere. Chances are the majority won't run into these issues until the warranty is gone, then it's a couple hundred more to replace the cooktop.

    I just used my pit boss ultimate Griddle for the first time. I'm a bit of a germaphobe so I actually washed the Griddle before mounting it on the stand. Just because I wanted to be cautious, I let it burn for approximately 15min or so before beginning my cook. After doing all that prior to cooking, I was greatly disappointed with the taste of my smash burgers. They had a chemical taste to them and my wife agreed. I was wondering if you have any suggestions. I really didn't smell chemicals or see smoke or anything when I did the burnoff.

    • @waltwins
      @waltwins  8 месяцев назад +1

      Thank you for watching and congratulations on the new griddle! The Ultimate Griddle with the ceramic top is designed to be cleaned with soap and water. I know you said you washed it before mounting, but the instructions also recommend cleaning the surface with soap and water. The units are generally coated with a soy based oil before being shipped out to preserve the tops in the event they will be sitting on store shelves for a long period of time. There shouldn’t be any chemical taste. Hope this helps fam!

    • @louismaniscalco1389
      @louismaniscalco1389 8 месяцев назад +1

      I am unclear on what you mean by surface, I washed the griddle top surface with soap and water and then thoroughly dried it with a lint free cloth, so any oil residue should have been removed. I cooked my bacon 1st and added a small amount of avacado oil for my onions, but my smash burgers were cooked with the tiniest of bacon oil residue.
      It's a mystery, maybe it was the avacado oil. I don't usually cook with it, but I know it has a high burn point so I used it for this cook. I will clean the griddle plate one more time and try a different oil to see if I get better results.

    Sounds like the Pit Boss customer service is top notch, so important when considering a brand to purchase. I really want one eventually, but of course with my luck, the top will wear out just after the two year warranty expires. I just had my NVME boot drive go out on me on my desktop computer last week (I'm currently using my laptop), and the warranty for the drive ended in December... I am livid!! I just bought a replacement that's twice the capacity for half the price I paid for my old one though, so I'm at least there is that... just need the time to fix my computer now. One thing about a non-stick surface, no-matter what kind, it will always wear out and will need replacing. A cold-rolled steal top, like a cast-iron, can last pretty much forever as long as it's properly taken care of. I still do love my non-stick skillets though, they are great for making eggs, and pancakes, etc... and they are so easy to clean! Keep on Griddlin'!

    • @waltwins
      @waltwins  Год назад +1

      That sucks brother!😂😂 I feel like I have the same luck sometimes. I think with the ceramic units they for sure will have a point where they wear out, but we are really anxious to see how far we can push these new tops - after having been really rough with the first ones, we think we can go a few years. Some Blackstone owners will keep theirs for years, while many toss them at the first sight of rust. Everyone has cast iron in their cookware that they’ve had forever, but it sits to the side (for most) out of convenience - I think that’s the case here. It really will come down to preference. What we think would be ideal, would be a unit that you could switch between the two, and maybe even toss on a stainless steel top too! I ordered a deluxe unit (Pit Boss’ rolled steel unit) because I want to have the option for both, cuz we love it all brother!
      You know we always appreciate your comments and insights! Take care brother, GRIDDLE ON! Oh, and good luck with the boot drive!😳😳

      This is the part that still confuses us! Here in Central Florida, when we did this, the next time we used it the griddle surface was a bit sticky from the oil and required a bit of cleaning. That said, underneath the surface is meat, and in the corners it can begin to rust. We are waiting for a bit more clarity on the oil, but our experience has been that oil wasn’t necessary. I’ve been thinking of getting a Griddle, but if I would have to get a new top every few years that’s not really a selling point for me. I have a Big Green Egg & a few other cookers & pizza ovens & use them year round in extreme cold (the coldest being -40 c 🇨🇦). Looks like rolled steel is just look after it, but with what’s happening to these PitBoss tops …. Well they can keep it.

      @waltwins  Год назад +3

      Understood for sure, but we don’t think this will need to be replaced often - we have a few hundred cooks on these units - and they have held up, even with being really rough on them. That said, for sure a rolled steel unit will hold up, but with extreme weather like you mention, rust will be an issue. Our intent here was to be transparent about our one unit. We have another Sierra (ceramic top) griddle that has over 100 cooks and looks like it did on day one - not even close to wearing down. We for sure will continue to demonstrate and show how they hold up over time, and maybe as more time passes they will be able to prove their worth. Cheers fam!🤙🤙

    Hey all! I love the griddle fire company lunches on Fridays, but unfortunately while I was out on leave for 6 months it was not kept up as I would in accordance with the manufacturers suggestions. Ultimately, there seems to be some residue cooked onto the surface that I can’t get off no matter what I try. I’ve tried it all aside from abrasive products. The residue is likely for release commonly used in waffle makers. Can anyone give me a sure way to remove it? Well, okay! As I expected, the reality of owning any type of Cooking device, with any type of Non-Stick Surface…that cooking surface is going to wear out and fail. I knew you guys would be up front about it, because you’re both genuine, Stand Up Guys. And, of course, Pit Boss is going to be right on it, replacing their Top Influencer’s Griddle Tops, promptly. Hopefully, Pit Boss is just as quick and hassle free, with Average Joe Pit Boss Owners, too.
    I am thinking it’s maybe been a year or less of use, too. And, I don’t think you guys are using your Griddles any more, than any other Griddle cooking fan. I easily have more than 200 cooks, on each of my BlackStone Griddles, because I cook on them, at least once a day, except on the most brutally cold days, of Winter. It’s particularly disappointing to see Rust showing up, on the non-stick surface, too. For sure the biggest concern with sharing a video like this was knowing the criticism we’d face. Oddly enough, not one Pit Boss owner has jumped it to refute our experience or issues, but from our Blackstone peeps (who we absolutely love of course!😂) who are still skeptical - we accept it all though for sure! Our biggest takeaway is that we still love it all. The ceramic units have proven to be very durable - we wanted to be transparent about these units - my Sierra is a prototype unit and still kicking (I have the replacement top, but haven’t changed it out yet). Brett also has a Sierra unit with over 100 cooks that looks just as it did on day one. I also requested a deluxe unit (Pit Boss’s rolled steel unit) and can’t wait to unbox and share cooks from it too! After a year of getting to best these up, we are confident that over time, they’ll get better and better.
      We have spoken with many Pit Boss owners, recognizing that we do have a relationship with Pit Boss, and we only shared this video because so many owners have either had no issues at all with their griddle, or Pit Boss customer service has been stellar. Up until about a year ago they used to promptly answer any questions, send out replacement parts without a hassle, and were quick to escalate an issue if necessary. Over the past year I’ve been treated terribly any time I contact them, and I never receive the call backs I’m told to expect.
