Very interesting watching this after your video on the $20k Toyota Land Cruiser against the $3k LR Disco 2. When you see how easily this RR went through the same tests as the Toyota & Disco on its original All Season ‘street’ tyres, you realise just how good the traction control system on the RR is and how capable it is ‘out of the box’ 😮
You can say that about the 5th Gen. 4R TRD OR as well. "out of the box" on factory chosen tires, it will walk the same terrain that LRD does no problem.
Sometimes people forget that it's not just about the base cost of the vehicle. My Audi is twice as much as my Toyota to insure. It's also insanely expensive to maintain, since the Audi also has a supercharger. Going to the dealer, it's $800-1200 USD for regular maintenance. Granted, you can go to a different mechanic (not dealer) and/or do work yourself, but most people don't do that. With something like a RR/LR, I think most would rather trust the dealer than random mechanic who doesn't specialize in them, but TFL viewers are likely car people and a different breed. For most people, buying one of these (even at 45% original MSRP) is still an expensive purchase, assuming you don't have it break down every other week.
I run these Falken's on my 22 Hyundai Santa Fe in the stock size on the factory 19" wheel and they did great in the snow. I'm now running 18" with Blizzaks that I bought used and the extra sidewall makes the ride so much better.
Just bought those tires last month for my 21 explorer. Did a lot of research and they seemed like the best option in Jersey right before the bad weather. Good to see em on TFL
As long as you keep the crossover pipes/coolant pipes in good condition I rarely ever see the engine fails. The only time I do is a cross over pipe fails and they overheat.
That was exactly what i was looking for - I am interested in long term costs and your true review/opinions. I like the narrower over the wide tire based upon research I have watched on different tire and off-road channels.
I did the same and fitted 20” LR alloys to my L405 with Falken Wildpeaks- my third set on my LRs. I’ve found them to be excellent all round, fairly quiet and great in the wet which is very important where I live. Terrain response gets better with each generation and it’s fantastic on the L405. That LWB will be interesting off road. Thanks.
I'm glad to see they choose RR wheels. For some reason I suspected some cheap Walmart wheel. On the other hand, considering its a Range Rover and it has air suspension, I wouldn't worry about ride quality being an issuer. Grip however, makes a big difference, especially in snow
Just got some Cooper Discoverer AT3 4s. American made. Seem very high quality. Def better than the Nexens and Goodyears that come stock on my truck. Best part.... 600 and change installed at Walmart. Black Friday deal cut the price in half!
Overland Journal did a big AT shootout years ago and the Coopers took their overall prize. Ive gone through a mess with them on my Jeep and Frontier. They're great tires.
Considering Range Rover is now a Rolls Royce, S class merc competitor now it’s mad how good it is Offroad. The previous gen was peak Range Rover and that’s a proper farmers workhorse in the UK, pretty much every farmer in the UK has one, they will have something more rough and ready, but the RR will be used for general farm stuff and towing animals to shows or market and the odd trip out with the wife.
Range Rover's heritage is off-road vehicle. It simply got gussied up over the years and now its considered a full luxury brand. Just like the $150k G-Wagon, and the rest of the Mercedes line. In North America, we only get the full luxury versions of these vehicles. For example, the sort wheel base S-Class isn't even imported. Nor is Audi A8 or BMW 7 Series for that matter.
It sure they make them but Cooper STT PRO mud tires kick ass and if you could fit a set of them on there they’d blow your mind!! I love mine they go through everything
@@damilolaakanni you can’t pick something if it isn’t available. Go on the Land Rover configurator and it will give you the choice of wheels for each model. For example on a D250 Defender you can pick the 18” wheel, whereas on the D300 Defender you can only pick a minimum of 19”.
Per JLR techs, you don’t air down 20” wheels to off-road. Light duty load on Defender for example is like 35psi instead of normal loads of about 44psi. The techs said to lower down to the light duty pressure level and MAYBE down to like 30psi, but anything more is unnecessary and ups your chance of pinch flats or side wall tears.

I just swapped my 19" wheels to 20" on my Discovery 4 (LR4) and got some T/A tires that work waaaay better than the stock Michelin Sport road tires. Always a good swap makes the difference and they look absolutely better than before.

Wish you could try some AT3 general grabber tyres on this car..you will get lots of views as it’s the go to for many people on L405 with all terrrain tyres. Great video
Those wheels and tires look a lot better than the 21s. When you guys do your builds and upgrade the tires what load rating do you usually go for? Do you think SL is good enough or do you prefer to go with a C or E to better cope with the Colorado rocks?
Theres a video i saw about the pizza cutter vs wide tire comparison and it was actually interesting to learn that the narrow tire had more tire deformation earlier than the wide tire which helps with going over medium size rocks and bumps. I just forgot the youtuber lol
Great video! Could you try some of the other modes on the articulation test? Some other video I saw (that I can’t seem to find now) mentioned that mud rut mode may be better for that articulating terrain since rock crawl mode prioritizes keeping the cab level above other things, and thus lifting wheels unnecessarily.
Many Jeepers think off road = rock crawl. These cars not made for rock crawling. It’s more for posh ride through the green fields of the UK or deserts of the Africa/Middle East. Not everyone is interested in or have desire to go through Rubicon or Moab trails.
What happened to tumbleweed Ranch? The best thing that’s ever been on any TFL channel? And where has David been? I didn’t like that guy much in the beginning but he’s awesome. And I’d love to see him on your channel building his greatness.

Sorry Tommy, the 3 peak snowflake symbol does NOT make this a winter tire. This standard simply means, “This symbol is a seal of approval of sorts that indicates the tire has been tested and it is capable of at least 110 percent of the traction of a reference all-season tire”. In my experience, they suck in ice and slush.
No, he is technically correct. It is legally regarded as a winter tire. As far as engineering goes I won't challenge that. But the Canadian and US government do legally regard the three peak snow rating as a winter tire.
@@hermanjohnson9180 you are correct. Technically. Realistically though, tires marketed as "all season" with the three peak marking are usually worthless on frozen, icy roads or in slush. The standard is based on increased performance in "medium packed snow". @@TheNightmoves Interesting. I'll take your word for it but for the all-terrain truck/SUV tires then that rating really counts. Unless it's super cold then you might as well have a snow tire. I know it would add time, cost, and inventory issues but with offroad comparison videos I wish they would all run the same tires. Especially if say one of them came with a more street orientated tire.
It's not a true snow tire, but it is considered a true winter tire. The difference is that the three peak/snowflake symbol makes a tire legal to use in winter/snow in areas where winter tires must be used by law.
110k for a LWB V8? You guys get some crazy deals over there. That car would have been well over 150k euros new. A 2017 regular wheelbase V6 diesel was 124k in Vogue trim, which is the entry level, with only a few extras added.

@12:08 True that pizza cutters gonna help but atleast in 4Runner world pizza cutters don't have good options. For example all 255/80R17 are Load E tires. Ive ran those Falkens AT Trails on a couple of vehicles, they are great for medium duty off road and snow. My hillbilly intuition would require me to plastidip or paint the wheels black to give it a different look.
Easy to find thousands of people who did just that. But to be honest, 98% of these vehicles are leased and returned, and then leased a second time. Only when they get to their third or fourth owner are they typically sometimes purchased.
I stopped watching as soon as I seen the weak ass tire they threw on it. I really taught they were going to put a real off-road tire. Great tire for all season driving and minor off road. TFL has never been about serious off-roading. Even their most extreme vehicles and trails are very mild; where did you get the idea they were anything else? While I might choose a tire that mild for my dd work truck that sees 99.99% pavement and would never choose it for one of my Rovers (My wife's DD L322 RR has Mickey Thompson Baja Boss ATs in 33" on it) I think they actually picked a tire appropriate to the use case they outlined. A mostly street commuter that will see some mild dirt once in a while.
