    There is no-one quite like Anselm Kiefer. Having achieved fame and notoriety in equal measure in the 1980s, he has become one of the world's most singular and successful artists. Working with themes of history, memory and mythology, Kiefer produces work that is consistently controversial, and monumental in its scale and ambition.
    In this imagine...Alan Yentob joins the artist at his studios in France and Germany as he prepares for a retrospective at the Royal Academy. In a series of frank interviews set against the backdrop of his awe-inspiring studios, Kiefer discusses the impact of his most significant pieces, installs a selection of new work, and explains why he is as excited and driven by his practice now, at the age of 69, as he was when he began.

    An affable, spiritual person with intellect, artistic ability and enormous creative energy. So satisfying and inspirational to see this portrait of Kiefer. The tour of Barjac is enormously captivating.

    Kiefer is iconic and a creative genius. However, ironically and of interest, if he were an ordinary citizen, his collecting of (art) detritus would be seen as hoarding; however beautifully he may make the collections. "Do you throw anything away?""No, Never. Never". @#.54 seconds Also, the narrator attempts to de-code Kiefer's creativity and put his work in a box. You cannot do this with a man as monumentally creative as Kiefer is. The magic is in his process; his process is undefinable.

      I find his work to be empty and kind of gross. What is he saying?

    Must be kept it all into a book before it falls and re process. It's now you see and now you don't. For every people seeing his art is just only to remember that there was a artist and his extraordinary art once apear in this word.

      He seems to be some kind of sacred cow. His work is an exalting emptiness. There is nothing critical on him in the art literature like our American counterpart Mathew Barney. I find the lack of criticism of his work to be suspect. Picasso was the most criticized artist of the 21st century.

    Indeed he has so much money to be able to undertake such a massive INSTALLATIONS ,without his wealth [ where does it come from ?] , he would be able to create all these massive installations and these big spaces he has bought to experiment
    with installations , any artist could have done all these things with MONEY in his BANK .

      I think he is WAY overrated. His work does NOTHING for me. It’s like the residue of meaning, like the ghost of meaning. His work gives me the feeling of death.

    • @rr7firefly
      @rr7firefly 4 года назад +3

      @@appletongallery Yes, he is focused on the impermanence of the materials that he uses and by extension the impermanence of our own human existence. That goes against most Western thinking, which does not want to acknowledge that all things pass into non-existence. I suppose you could call that death.

    Such pretentious shit. Apparently now everything is art.- which makes none of it art. As a relatively unknown young painter Kiefer made amazing and beautiful paintings - regardless of subject. Now it's embarrassing. But I still watch videos on his work to see his 70s and 80s work which I will always look at and respect.

      Interesting how you are so ambivalent. That shows you are actually a thinker and open to revelations that do not come quickly. I like that. Too many people at museums and exhibitions walk through them without actually LOOKING. (SEEING) I notice this whenever I watch videos taken at Art Basel and the Venice Biennale. Art for entertainment -- YUCK!
