I have always liked his work but this is one of the craziest things I've seen. Reminds me a bit of Richard Serra launching molten metal into the corners of a room. Very interesting indeed.

For those who don't know/understand why he's applying molten lead to his canvases, he does this as a way to remove the paint from the pre-painted canvases. If he's satisfied with the resulting works, he makes wall-hanging pieces out of them which blur the line between painting and sculpture.

Anselm Kiefer owns a vast property in southern France which has been, over years and decades, transformed into a studio/park, now opened to the public. He has made tons of money in his lucrative quest to reinvent geology and history.

No, I don't think he's overrated at all. If you have seen the work, I mean really seen the work, one can not but be overwhelmed and impressed. SEE IT IN THE FLESH, not on a screen or a book. They are master works of a high order and it's rare. I have seen work since the early 80s and he always delivers. His contemporaries in Germany also really something like Lupertz and Baselitz, Penck, Immendorf all very great artists. @@appletongallery

I had a thought while watching his process... He uses extremely toxic materials destructive to both humans and the environment yet we find ourselves drawn to the end result. Even forcing some of us to tap deeper into our own nature and the nature of life itself. Am I the only one that sees his artistic work as an oxymoron?

The fact that you take a straw and a bag to pick up a can of soda. The fact that you buy all your little Chinese food and throw out the condiments and plastic silverware you don't use. Incredibly disgusting and dangerous.
