  • German painter and sculptor Anselm Kiefer discusses the meanings behind some of his favorite materials, including straw, cow manure, and lead. He describes how he strives for fluidity and malleability in his work, though conservation can be a challenge.
Kiefer on art, history, and how they're both subjective: • Anselm Kiefer: History...
Watch Kiefer apply molten lead to a canvas: • In the studio with art...

I haven't been so awed by any artist in a long time. Strangely, I wasn't aware or familiar with his work. The first images I saw of his work reached something deep inside me. Of course, I can also see some of the things I hate about artists and celebrity. But that aside, his work holds me like few works of art do... And the scale of his pieces!! Astounding. I am thankful that I found his works. It is a privilege.

This was a wonderful listen. I love his ideas. I love how the interviewers can barely keep up.

It's fascinating to see an artist accepting the changing nature of the material world. It forces you to think of the idea and nature of what a painting should be. While we tend to idealize the permanence of painting but he embraces the change. For him it's organic and it's a growing or decaying thing. To decay is not a bad thing as it is still a change and if it frustrates you, he wants you to accept it. Fascinating stuff!

Absolutely wonderful! Kiefer understands painting and its evolution...the importance of material in contemporary art and how the artist express his thoughts through material and not simply colour. Many art lovers understand a picture but they dont fully understand the process and the years until the artist finds his own medium to develop an image...it takes a few seconds to make a painting but it takes a lifetime to become a great artist. I have seen Kiefer`s work at Tate in 2005 after that I have never stopped painting!

“Color as object, not as illusion.” ----- Anselm is, like Werner Herzog, a masterful mischief maker. A living master. “Some way between order and chaos.”

Kiefer was very lucky to be acknowledged and appreciated from the 1990 ies on and earning a lot of money, changing his properties into bigger ones, now he lives in France on a huge property, you cannot imagine how big it is. I think he doesn't even realize how lucky he was.

Anselm Kiefer is the greatest painter, ever; even greater than Matthias Grünewald. Most of the critics don't know that, but maybe in a hundred or a thousand years, most will. Most of the critics today think Gerhard Richter is, but I think that his art will be forgotten. Who could possibly forget the art of Anselm Kiefer?

Il est dommage que certaines de ces oeuvres ne tiennent pas dans le temps (plusieurs matériaux) comme ses oeuvres exposées au Louvre qui ont dû être restaurées...
Sinon Anselm Kiefer est un grand Artiste...🎨

I hope so. He is stuck in 1946-1950. Never understood the concept of gentleness, forgiveness, empathy, softness, poetry. Poor Wim Wenders tried to make a documentary about him ...
