The historic Belvedere Golf Club in Charlevoix, Michigan has welcomed the footsteps of golf legends like Bobby Jones, Walter Hagen, Sam Snead, and other all-time greats.
It's now the site of the Hickory Open, a marquee Hickory Golf tournament where Erik will attempt to etch his own name in golf history.
Hickory golf is a variation of golf played with hickory shafted golf clubs produced prior to 1935. There's no titanium allowed, but Brassies, Spoons, Bulldogs, Jiggers, Cleeks, Niblicks, & Mashies are all fair game.
This is Adventures in Golf, presented by United.
Adventures in Golf takes you around the world to places you'd never think golf would exist. From the slums of Mumbai to a Louisiana prison, no adventure is too gnarly for host Erik Anders Lang. Watch for the golf, stay for the adventure.
Highlighting golf's fun, weird, and ridiculous side.
Skratch is the home of Adventures In Golf with Erik Anders Lang, pranks, challenges, Boo vs Beef, as well as collaborations with the one and only DJ Steve Porter.

"You just can't use any mechanical devices"... he says from his golf cart haha
Hahahahahahha
So you're talking about this?
Pulls out range finder 😂
Silas VanSky those are model t carts
Yeah I was thinking all they need are some caddies
I thought that but in fairness they are all 70 years old lol
Hands down best series on RUclips, don't even @ me
Amen
don't @ me either!
I was just about to comment that
@@RandomGolfClubFilms I have a gem of a course you might like just outside of Central City Nebraska. Riverside Golf Club is a nine hole sand greens course. My dad has been keeping the club running for years now, it is his baby. We both love your show and would love to have you come check out our little slice of heaven. ( The $7 all day green fee is on me!)
100th like on this
The sound of the driver is a thing of magic
10 minutes is just not long enough.. Love it!
I'm the "Doc" Gels from the video... follow-up: I did put a new shaft in that club that he broke in the tournament, so it's good now.
Eric ended up buying that bulldog wood club from me. He grew up playing at a course in New Jersey when he was a young boy, and when I researched that bulldog club, turns out it belonged to the head pro at that very same new jersey golf club back in the 1920's (his name was stamped on the clubhead)... so he had to have it. Well he took it back to California, played with it and the head developed some cracks. He sent it back to me and I used some epoxy and screws and sent it back to him, so it's back in action!
Lot's of neat stories and history in hickory golf.

Wish this was true - guys name is Ganon Baker. Not Doc Gels
@@maximus3511 No it's me... Ganon Baker imitating Doc Gels, now that's funny!
I’ve been loving binge watching these seasons and lo and behold here’s an episode from my hometown, on the course I caddied on as a kid, with locals I know! Amazing!
I have been saying for years that the pros should do a whole tournament like this. This is now in my bucket list.
I cannot help but agree.
Such high production value in these. Always so well done!
From Michigan and played this course this past summer! It is an outstanding pure golf course! Thanks for showing a small bit of Michigan’s golf!
Would love to give Hickory golf a go one day, have only ever played with modern clubs
they feel so heavy when you swing! LOL
Geoff Vicas I want to play in that open
Hit your local thrift/charity shops and look for some old persimmon clubs. It's not hickory, but the sweet spots are tiny and they're heavy as.
I would suggest perusing Ebay, that's how I built my hickory playing set. Nice thing about hickory is you only need six clubs: A Brassie, a Mid Iron, a Mashie, a Mashie Niblick, a Niblick, and a Putter. Definitely lighter to tote than a modern 14 club set!
There are other kinds you can add over time such as the bulldog, jigger, spoon, and cleek, but those basic six will serve you well to get started. Steer clear of the pricey collectible ones and they can be had fairly reasonably.
Only started playing with hickories fairly recently, but I've been enjoying them a great deal. Definitely heavier than modern clubs, you really feel the impact with the ball, and they're not as forgiving as modern clubs. That said, if you lose the "grip it and rip it" mentality and deliver a nice slow even swing, dear lord, a good hickory shot is a thing of beauty to experience.
I have been watching this series for about 2 years now. By far the best golf experience of all time. You need to get some pros on here and bring them to the old times!
I know I dont look like a golfer, but loved golf the very 1st time I played it, I just recently started buying some old hickory shafted putters that are just BEAUTIFUL, even if they aren't very rare. Just awsome to hang on a wall or put in a shadow box. Or even play with....much different than today's clubs. Especially when u are talking drivers, and putters. Fairways and greens gentlemen....and ladies.
Can’t dink about most rewarding and enchanting way of creating golf memories than this!
Keep it up Erik !!
There is nothing like the feedback and feel that a hickory shafted persimmon driver provides!
Very nice short movie sharing emotions and stories on the hickory world. The game has yet to offer a lot by the use of the old clubs. The soxring is second to the joy that hickory golf offers to any player. Try it and … you’ll enjoy it.
Dido 10 minutes was just a teaser. I switched to hitting persimmon woods and 20+ year old Mizuno's this past season just to relive my youth and haven't had this much fun golfing in years! Now I see this video and have quite possibly just found the next chapter in my golfing career. Thanks brother!
I think i just found my new favorite youtube channel. Just watched the longest course in the world. Prison golf. Urban golf. Slum golf. Hole in one insurance and now this. I have to say eric very possibly has the best job in the entire world. Travel the world and play not only golf everywhere. But different styles of golf. This is amazing. Its 3:45 in the am. And tomorrow is monday (well today actually). And im pretty sure im not gonna be able to stop binging.
Left with things way better than a trophy. Love this series and especially this one. Love golf history so would absolutely love this
They should use a hill of sand on the tee, not a tee-stick
So cool! Sure you heard some epic stories out there! Love playing with the older dudes!! Great video!!
By far my favourite video in the series!!!!
Fantastic! Another great episode!! So glad your back for another season!
I recently started collecting any old clubs I could find. One of the sets I found a 9 iron with a hickory shaft and now I'm hooked. Great episode as always! Keep them coming!
Those hickory clubs have such a nice sound. I use one sort of like the one Erik bought and that sound coming off the head never gets old I always love getting to use it.
I love your videos. This is one series that I can't pick a favorite video. You just keep out doing yourself. Hats off
Every episode this series gets better and better!!!!
Yet another great, interesting, video from the world of golf. Great seeing all the great swings with the hickory clubs too.
One of the best in the show. Loved this !
the thunder roll over erik slow motion smash was very bagger vance moment 5:38
I love the Adventures in Golf series! 👏🏻
Well I guess it's time to start looking around for some old clubs.
This show is fabulous! Look forward to more episodes.
6:50 legend has it that he has never gotten that high five
and again EAL ....out of the ballpark ....thank you for the class and respect for the game you produce so often through your episodes ....take it low brother
this looks like an incredible amount of fun
I ABSOLUTELY enjoyed this. Thank you.
ALOHA!!I have been shopping for some nice knickers recently I already dress long sleeves and trousers! happy to see this video adding some confidence for showing up at my home course looking legit! I love old school golf! God bless you on your travels kine sir Aloha!
Loved it, one of your best vlog's I've seen Erik.
I watched this whole video smiling. Job well done.
I have an old hickory set in my attic that was my great grandfather's, but I've always been afraid to go hit them in case I break one... but maybe I should gamble on it now that I've seen this. Great video as always!
This channel is amazing! Could watch for hours
I love your channel man. I can't believe that you fly under the radar. I can't wait till this channel takes off, I'm going to have hella hipster points
Best series on youtube, should be 1 hour episodes on the golf or travel but for now I'll watch this amazing show for free!!
Seeing this video first in my recommended section is the best birthday gift I could’ve asked for
Beautiful and neat. Charlevoix is named after Father Charlevoix, a Catholic priest who was a missionary to lower Michigan in 1710. When I was like nine years old and went to summer camp, the camp had a miniature golf course in the middle with dirt greens and wooden handled putters.
Man I wish I knew you were in Michigan!!! Would’ve loved to say hi! But now I know this event goes on, I’ll be heading up to it! Too cool!
I absolutely love this channel as a golf fanatic
Best one this season!!! And I agree 10 min is just not long enough.
Tad Moore makes some amazing hickory clubs
Wonderfully creative, genuine, and delightful online content. Cheers to eric, the editors, producers and crew. :)
This was awesome and I now want a set!
Love this new episode ! Best web series on RUclips so far !!
Bucket list addition!! So awesome
I’m seventeen and I was lucky enough to purchase a set of antique wooden shaft clubs. Their right when they say how much better it feels to hit them because there is nothing more satisfying then launching a ball with a wooden club
So this is what inspired you to get the hickory club you had in your set when you played with Rick Shiels? Awesome!
Without doubt Erik has the best channel on RUclips. Awesome.
This is a great one! Keep 'em coming!
thats been something on my bucket list for a long time.
Looking sharp Erik!
Awesome series
Keep up the great work guys
Hickory golf is a growing in the U.S. & Europe. Here at the Metropolitan Hickory Society, we play with hickory shafted clubs (authentic antiques crafted before 1935 and/or replicas). We host hickory tournaments throughout the NY metropolitan region at historic courses generally designed & built by prominent architects during the golden age (1900-1939). We welcome all that appreciate the rich history and traditions of golf.
Bucket list for sure. Loved this!
A new level of EAL AIG cool. Outstanding!
This put a smile on my face
FINALLY a video with great music !
Oh yes! the best Vlog i feel you've done yet! Loved it and have fun with your 'Bulldog'! I look forward to seeing its appearance in more videos :)
A new thing on my bucket list.
Still as awesome as every other episode!
This is really cool.
Wish it was longer.
5:05 Crazy!! that's Mr. Chris.....not seen him in 10 years. Super nice guy!
Best one this season. Keep it up
What a great mini documentary
That was fantastic. I would love to do something like that.
This is amazing. This series, this channel, everything. The amount of editing and perfecting is noticeable as well. Really fun to watch
Very nostalgic, loved the video
I really liked this one man. The classic style looks gold on ya
So cool you went to michigan to play! Hope you liked it here!
This is great. My dad had some old hickorys and gutta percha balls
and they were just impossible. So hard to hit well. After playing with
those things I came to the conclusion Bobby Jones had to be the
greatest golfer of them all and not by a little but by A LOT.
Idea for a future show....do one on disc/frisbee golf. Contact a pro
named Simon Lizotte. A funny/goofy guy and the fan's favorite. Do
a challenge, perhaps. 9 holes of trad golf, 9 holes of disc golf. Trust
me on this, get Simon and you'll have a good episode with more
views than usual. I promise.
So unbelievably cool.
Love the soundtrack! Well done
That line of merch for Mike Mega? I'm digging "Broken Shaft" as a brand. Dr. Gels is another great character to honor!
this guy has a beautiful swing
My new favorite show
I'm 12 seconds in and can tell I'm going to love this one!
Dude, you have an awesome golf shot. Clean ball striker. 👌
Need hickory in California! Love it Eric!!!!
Loved this video!
This frickin guy is the best.
Most underrated series and most underrated channel. Gotta get you guys to 100,000 subs at least.
EAL making the magic happen!
Always does!
Great as always
Buying a set for Christmas. Awesome video
Charlevoix is a great city. Right on lake Michigan
Erik, you are in my back yard (well technically my front yard) here. Next time in the area you got to let me know, I can give you the low down of beers from the area. Such a fun course. Way to give er!
Immediately looking into getting these clubs and finding the tournaments.
You make me smile…….😊 pretty awesome.
I started out with antiques i found in the trash. I threw them away eventually but as my game grew but now I wish I had them. Good thing is though someone picked them out of our trash too lol.
wow that is cool and super unique great video. I need these to start being a minimum of a half an hour
It may be 2020, but I still love nickers and plaid.
I found one time a putter that was not hickory shaft but Bamboo from 1912 in a thrift store. when I went back to buy it after getting money for it, the putter was gone. Sad as some companies also made Bamboo Shaft as well using old style Resin for the strengthening and protection.
