  • This fancy BMW convertible told the owner that it needs new brake pads, and told him to "drive moderately"... Wow.
He drove it "moderately" to the approved service center, and now it's our job to get this German pocket rocket back to full health.
We already learned our lesson on dealing with fancy new tech....RESEARCH COMES FIRST before you touch ANYTHING!!
    Enjoy!

Tip regarding wear sensors. If you replace the pads but not the wear sensors, the I-Drive won’t let you reset the mileage count for pad replacement, the system is watching to see that old sensors were unplugged and new ones plugged in, if the sensors are fine just unplug them for a few minutes and then plug them in again and I-Drive will allow the reset. Could save 25-30 bucks or even 55-60 if doing both ends.

Doesn't it require 2 sensors for the front and 2 for the back? *I saw in part 2 that they're only on one side* I'd definitely rather check engine oil myself by pulling a dipstick, rather than relying on a computer.
I recently bought a front/rear set of rotors & pads for my Subaru on Amazon made my PowerStop, $180 shipped. OE replacement too, none of this economy crap. Amazon actually made an error, it showed the kit I bought fits my GT Limited, but the front rotors were too large (11.6").. the other kit that DOES fit, Amazon showed it does NOT fit. I contacted Powerstop and told them the issue, they shipped me two 10.9" front Geomet coated rotors free (the original kit did not call for coated rotors). So kudos to them!

A few tips for when you need to reset the service interval for the brake pads on (F-series) BMWs:
First, the wear sensors have multiple breakable links with different resistors in series, so in this case the rear sensor needs to be replaced in order to be able to reset the rear brake pad interval.
Second, you will find many guides online on how to reset the interval, but almost all of them omit a few essential steps: You need to have all doors closed and the ignition on (engine running or check engine light on), when you press the start button once without brake pedal the car will go to the equivalent of key position 1, you need to press it twice so the check engine light goes on.
Finally, there is no old-school maintenance booklet in the car. You need to go online (aos.bmwgroup.com), register your company and only then you can enter the service information. If you don't do this, it might become hard to make warranty claims for the customer in the future. (legally, your bills should be enough but my experience is that it's not so easy to get your lawful warranty at BMW)

I know I'm late here but a lot of the comments are really confusing. Brake wear sensors have been on these cars for almost 30 years. Service interval indicators since the 80s (and common on almost all cars now). Not everyone driving these cars is an auto tech or DIYer. Some people don't realize or know you need to change your oil. A wire is a lot cheaper than getting into an accident due to shredded brakes or blowing your engine. Plain English message showing you what's wrong with your car and telling you to take care of it. A lot better than a single "check engine" light. I don't get the hate.

In the salt belt doesn't matter what pads you use. But I have noticed the new Euros are using cheaper OEM rotors. The 2005 Volvo I worked on last year is STILL on the original rotors at 220k miles!!!!!!

@@PineHollowAutoDiagnostics I have found OEM brake pads to be softer, hence generating more brake dust and less harsher on the rotors. But things may have changed now.

I tried the oil level measuring on a Mini Cooper once, just for laughs. The engine has to be warmed up and it takes probably a full two minutes for it to complete the measurement. I still don't understand how that's better than an old-fashioned dipstick.

For the sake of science, you should try to paint over the contacts on that sensor with a silver conductive paint pen. Maybe spray paint over it to prevent corrosion. I am curious to see if that would allow you to reuse the brake sensor.
Also, I used to have a 1983 renault that had a needle on the cluster that showed the oil level as long as the key was in the on position but not running.

Rover had dashboard oil level indicators at key on in the 1950's & 60's ISTR it worked through the fuel gauge Later Chrysler UK and Chrysler France had oil level warning lights on the Avenger, Sunbeam, Alpine and Horizon ranges but that was a very unreliable system.

canuckguy worried I guess? I’ve never spent more than 500 bux fixing mine in 10 years. Front brakes are $100 bux vs $80 on our Pilot. Given the horrific braking of the Pilot and the amazing brakes on the 3 series it seems like a bargain to me. Motor mounts on our Pilot? $400 (each) and they break. Motor mounts on the 3 series? $100 and last forever. I’ve got plenty of examples. Yes BMWs in general break more, but the parts aren’t generally insane and if you work with a good independent mechanic like Ivan and buy non-OEM bagged equivalent parts, they can be downright affordable even..

canuckguy worried Heh it’s all good. Parts pricing is just weird sometimes. My local Honda dealer being the absolute worst for price gouging diy people. Price is competitive if you’re taking it in, but man... they get you if all you want are parts. $28 bux for a gallon of diluted antifreeze. Bmw dealer is like $20 and it makes 2 gallons. Lexus charged me $30 bux for two o rings - I would have walked but the size wasn’t published and they were needed during a timing belt job. The local market is just insane, but at least the bmw dealer will (or used to at least) match online prices. Was like a breath of fresh air going in there.
PS - Hard to be a snob when you drive a $5k car and diy everything. :-)

    • @briantii
      @briantii 5 лет назад

canuckguy worried Mostly agree. BMW values drop insanely fast. If you buy used they might be less, but buying new for true.
Cost more to repair? Just depends. You can fix a lot of sensors and oil leaks on a bmw for the price of a fwd GM transmission. Really depends on the model. If you’re talking about an I4 or i6 bmw in a 3 series then they’re pretty solid and probably won’t ever cost you much. Probably less long term than many domestic cars. If you’re talking about a 550i with the hot vee twin turbo v8... yeah... that’s going to cost a fortune. They break a lot and it’s never cheap.
Cost of ownership kinda the same deal. More than what is really the question. I convinced a friend of mine to pick up a 3 series since he wanted a 4 door with a manual transmission, he was worried about the costs too. 3 years later and he even admits that it’s really not anymore expensive than anything else. He spends more on his Nissans. His has 200k+ miles and even the original clutch.
I got over the car thing and what people drive a long time ago. I bought mine because the wife said I had to have 4 doors, and I said rwd and manual. Not many choices. Just trying to set the record straight that not all of these cars are crazy expensive to own.

I wanted to be a cheapskate on my BMW and not replace the sensor. Somehow the car knew it was not replaced and the remaining mileage on the Idrive (which I reset from the cluster) just fell off after about an hour. Being confused I kept on resetting it and the same happened. Then I unplugged the sensor and reconnected it. Then it would only reset to 1000 miles. After that the message came back 1000 miles later. The fix was to do another pretend sensor replacement and with an X Tool scan tool reset the number of pad changes back to the actual number the car has had. Crazy

    It's a performance car.
2004 BMW 3 brand new. Wife: "I love this little sporty car."
18k miles, brake pads gone, (brakes got real grabby and hard to control)
Mech: "It needs new pads, and new rotors too because they are made of soft metal. For best performance."
Me: "But why so soon? And how does soft metal rotors make them perform better?"
Mech: "It's a performance car. Performance cars need brakes more often."
Me: "But my Ranger truck has 100k on the brakes and they are still fine. And in terms of performance I can still lock them down easily."
    Mech: "It's a performance car."
    Me: "Yes,... you.. said that."
39k miles. New pads and rotors again.
    Same conversation again.
25k miles needed new main wiring harness.
30k miles needed new main wiring harness. Yes again.
    Me: "It's leaking oil"
Mech: "Performance cars always leak oil."
    Me: "What?! er... Why?!"
Car often stalled out in intersections since new. Left wife stranded in middle of intersections dozens of times.
More warranty service. Sometimes weeks at a time at the dealer. Longest was 3 weeks.
Had a nice feature to lower all the windows all the way down after locking the car and leaving it in a parking lot.
Sometimes we would only get a few dozen feet away and we could hear the windows all go down so we would walk
    back and try again.
Other times we were too far away to hear and would get back to find all the windows down.
Fortunately it never rained on any of these occasions.
Got so we would lock it up and stand there for a couple minutes to make sure windows stayed up.
Never got 20k miles out of the brakes.
Car never quit stalling out in intersections.
At 75k miles. Wife(between sobs): "I hate this car."
At 75k miles, 25k miles after warranty expired. I totaled up all the money spent by BMW and by us to repair this car.
The repairs they did were under warranty but they had a cost that someone had to pay.
The total exceeded the original price of the car.
And in terms of performance. My Ranger drove better. Accelerated faster(lots faster). Cornered better. Shifted gears better.
BTW, the automatic transmission was terrible. It would take somewhere between 1 to 3 seconds between gears.
During that time the engine was not engaged to the wheels at all, just coasting.
Traded it in for a Honda. When the Honda dealer drove the BMW away it stalled in his parking lot. Ha ha ha.
I wonder how good Honda warranty service is? 110k miles. Never been. 'cept for that stupid air bag thing.
A little shrapnel is good for the soul.
    It was a performance car.

I personally don't see the " extravaganza " here, except that it makes for a good title. Since you were on ecstuning you might have seen the Pagid front and back set for 188$(free shipping for orders over 49$,delivery 2-3 days from Ohio). That is very reasonable for high quality pads for any make and model. Actually Pagid makes high quality pads for racing that meet or exceed OEM spec. Now if you're a cheapskate, drive a hillbilly pickup truck and don't mind the insane squealing from Chinese steel pads from Autozone,Advance,O'Reilly then go right ahead and buy them for 39$ a set! Good luck with them!
Speaking of sensors,I'll take a sensor that tells me when it's time to change the pads any day over the STUPID design they have in generic pads, where the " sensor " is a metal tab that starts touching the rotor making a crazy squealing noise! Keep driving and you'll wear a nice groove in the rotor and you'll have to replace that too! STUPID STUPID STUPID! And BTW,since you know how simple that sensor is, you don't have to buy OEM sensors,BMW doesn't make sensors...they just put their name on it and charge double : just buy HOLSTEIN or FEBI or URO for 11 bucks and they'll do the same job.
I can agree with you about the lack of a dipstick and many other stupid things European manufacturers do,but that's for another discussion...
