For those civilians, cops, and military persons who want to defend themselves and others, it is critical to get good training. Accomplishing this though can be a bit elusive as the next question follows: What type of training do I need. Sadly most simply buy a gun and call it a day. Others still may take a pistol class or even 2, but know the 'fight' is far bigger than a draw and a reload. It is about about seeing the fight before it happens, its about thinking quickly within the framework of what is tactically preferred, what is moral, what is legal, and then all the skills required to pull off the best decision. You can compile your own list based on your context, but here are some of the categories I've been trained in or am interested in - pistol skills, rifle / carbine skills, shotgun skills, use of cover and concealment, situational awareness, reading threat indicators, verbal judo / de-escalation, martial arts to include standup like Krav Maga and Muay thai, and ground game like brazilian jiu jitsu. Also, weapons centered martial arts from the use of weapons and the disarming of others' weapons. More areas of interest in training include emergency medical training, room clearing, fighting in and around vehicles, gunsmithing and ammunition reloading, low light tactics, night vision employment, small unit tactics, military history, mission planning, defensive driving, land navigation, communications, and survival skills. Train hard. Train smart.

"A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Verbal Judo, I like the term, I learned this as a young man working security in the beach bars in PCB FL, Bouncing is 95% brains 5% brawn...Fighting with customers and sending them to jail was counter productive on so many levels, I would get them gone for the night and most times they were back the next night apologizing to me for their actions. I truly believe 90% of all issues with others comes form misreading the situation and someone else intentions, it can go South so easily because nobody wants to appear weak or stupid...Being man enough to walk away or take responsibility and say excuse me or im sorry even when your not wrong is a huge thing when it comes to deescalation when alcohol is involved.

Do anything it takes to "WIN".
At the end of the day you need to have the mentality and the skills necessary to respond to any threat with the appropriate response so that you get to go home. I think that is why I train the way I do, both mentally and physically. Good topic as always John.

Good stuff brother. The other thing I would add in the physical stuff is good force on force training & simulation. Practicing our skillset under pressure will always help to reinforce what we think we know & identify what we can improve on. Do we understand & practice fear management, tactical breathing & understand what happens to the body during a dynamic critical incident?
The mental/emotional/spiritual aspect is important as well for our mindset & being able to accept what has happened. Know what you believe & why you believe it.
Aftermath considerations; how to deal with law enforcement, do you have legal protection, what will you say to law enforcement after a deadly force incident? If you have legal protection (Texas Law Shield, USCCA) You will know what to say, but only if you drill it.
Always study if you're not physically training. Read books from reputable authors/trainers & mental map scenarios when you can.
Above all, stay safe & train smart.
