I still want to see a Ruby/Emerald challenge while using only Assist, where you are allowed to add any Pokemon to your team to give Skitty moves to pull from with Assist, and you can teach those Pokemon TMs, but you cannot use EXP share to level them, and cannot use them in battle. It would be interesting to see how you customize the moves Skitty can pull from for each boss fight using the pokemon available at that point in the game.
That’s a great idea
I thought Assist was added in gen 5? Guess I was wrong?
@@NotTheDragon837Yea, you are. Actually a gen 3 move.
@@mardenjunior1799yeah I just looked it up. Guess I didn't know since it wasn't until Gen 5 when anything other than skitty/delcatty could learn it. I never used Skitty.
Edit: nevermind, it was actually gen IV that Glameow could learn it. But I never used Glameow either- I never even saw it until Purrloin and Liepard in gen V
@mahdrybread
It's funny how Mah-Dry says Thunderbolt is the weirdest move Staryu can have where I'm just staring at Skullbash like "Ah yes, how fitting for a starfish which are notorious for having skulls"
That's hilarious, I didn't know that but hey that's gen 1 for ya lmao
You would not believe how many Gen 1 Pokemon can learn Skull Bash from the TM; it's such a garbage move (only 100 power and no defense buff in Gen 1) with such wide distribution. Most of them at least have a skull or can be inferred to have a skull, no idea about Staryu.
I actually saw a scientific paper recently that likened starfish and other echinoderms to disembodied heads walking on their lips, so I guess Skull Bash is oddly fitting
Dont question why goldeen can learn flash and hyperrbeam.
There was even a Isekai manwha , something about a man becoming a fish and those fishes have attacks like pokemon.
A goldfish important sidecharacter ( not to confuse with MC just because she's been there the whole time )
Her goldfish body could use hyperbeam and flash.
That day i learned goldeen and golking are able to learn those moves lol
@@ItsJustKaya goldeen and flash I can kinda understand if you think of it like the pokemon has shiny reflective scales that could use the move during the day if the sun is up, but flash at night or using hyperbeam yea I don't get that either lol
"Hits hard with Dragon Rage" is not a phrase you hear very often. It's always 40 damage.
Staryu's HP is just that bad.
8:40 Victreebel's base crit chance is 13.671875% but in Gen 1 crit chance raising moves crit 8 Times as much as normal moves this means victreebel crits in about 99.67% of all razorleafs that hit the target. It isn't 100% because a move gets checked if it crits the same way a move hits in Gen 1 so it is affected by its own 1 in 256 Glitch. Venusaur because of its higher base speed will have the same chance to crit with razor leaf.Hope this helps
So I'm rewatching pokemon indigo league. And the fact that Ash changes Onix's type to water using the sprinklers has always made me laugh 😂.
soak before soak. XD
This pokemon challenge is rated H for "HYAH!" (For those who don't know, that the sound that staryu makes in the anime)
I adore Staryu, seeing it debut with Misty made me mouth drop - solidifying my love for water pokemon. As a result, every game ive played has been a water run...made some games more difficult, dont regret it - they rule! ❤❤❤
Water types are plentiful in Gen 1. And having coverage against them while being one is great.
Why didn't you go for the TMs right away? You had Thunderbolt after Surge, Ice Beam when you got to Celadon and Psychic when you got to Saffron.
Psychic would've been great for you in this run, nailing half of Team Rocket, all of Koga's Gym, almost all of Erika's gym, 60% of Bruno's team and all of Agatha's team. The Special drop from Psychic is particularly crippling in Gen I, as it makes their special attacks weaker and yours stronger.
MDB is not known for always making the smartest choices in games.
He's still in the mindset of wondering if a certain Pokemon can beat the game when everyone knows they can.
@@mh11213 He doesn't wonder if the Pokémon can beat the game. He wonders if HE can beat the game with that Pokémon. Thats why the videos are called "Can I beat x with y" and not "Can YOU beat..." .^^
@@mh11213 No he isn't. Never has. It's why unlike some other youtubers, he says things like "maybe if I do x then I can do y" or shows the bad fights. Some just go "Here's the levels I beat them at. AND NEXT"
Plus Blizzard is broken in Gen 1 and he has to go to the Lab anyway. Sure it has 5 PP but he has two PP Ups.
If I had to venture a guess, it's probably easy to auto-pilot through the game a bit when you try to put out a video a week. He definitely made it harder on himself though.
He's a star man waiting in the sky, he said he'd like to meet us but he thinks he'll blow your mind
I miss Cox
I thought for the whole run, maybe staryu doesn’t learn psychic and only starmie does but nope. Probably would have smoothed out Agatha a lot. Also yeah, Venusaur has enough speed to almost always crit razor leaf, and I believe Sabrina’s alakazam has AI issues because of psywave’s damage being weird.
You know its guna be a great day when MDB uploads! Cant wait to see how this one pans out though I feel like itll do pretty well! Keep up the great work MDB and hope your health keeps getting better! Make like a staryu and recover irl ❤
Thats every day chief, MDB is one of the most prolific lets players ive ever seen
Lol MDB totally forgot about icebeam/blizzard after mentioning it literally in his intro section 😅
Seeing you go into the grass gym without Ice Beam or Psychic was painful. 😬😅
Unrelated note: In Gen 1, high critical hit ratio moves will always (99.6%) critically hit when used by Pokémon with base speed of 64 or higher. Victreebell is 70; Venusaur is 80. Razor Leaf will connect with a critical hit 94.2% of the time.
Tbf Ice Beam is one of those TMs that got moved to the casinos for way too much Poke. Heck even I forget you just have to give the girl on the store roof a water and she gives you it when I play RBYG.
yeah, MDB is not good like Jrose or Scott's Thoughts. Its a wonder why he has as many subscribers that he has. Not getting/using Thunderbolt, Ice Beam or Psychic earlier when he easily could is proof of this. (He still had Harden by the 5th rival fight, ewwwww!!) Also, MDB clogs his content with sponsorship garbage when youtube is currently trying to kill adblockers in order to spam unskippable ads. Its disgusting.
Fun fact: the staryu line can demolish all three kanto starters (surf for charizard, thunderbolt for blastoise and psychic/ice beam for venusaur). Basically the initial pick only affect the early and mid game.
Yeah, but only one of them can demolish Staryu, as we see happen over and over in the video.
Staryu is a moovepool wonderbox. Ice beam, surf, thunderbold and psychic i guess 😁
Blizzard instead of Ice Beam.
Surf, Thunderbolt, Ice-beam and Psychic!
Due to gen 1 crit mechanics, moves like slash and razor leaf basically crit every time. So not bad luck, just gen 1 shenanigans lol
Razor Leaf is always a critical hit.
Speaking of what you mentioned near the end. I thought about doing this run in Pokemon Black. Let's hope I get a decent nature for Staryu.
Your still a champ..you got me into solo playthroughs..but @ScottsThoughts is my main pokemon content creator i watch...probably because math is my masters..but I still appreciate you my guy
A challenge I’ve been requesting:
Gen 2 or Gen 4 with only Gligar!
One of my favorite Pokémon who doesn’t get much attention
I still want to see caterpie solo run since I tried it in crystal and I managed to beat red but it did require me using x items
You know, he has never ever replied to anyone in the comments answering this question - Could you please share which fossil you took? Don't click the reply looking for an answer, you have to watch the video, that's the rules!
What did I say? Watch the video, please. Go on then.
7:48 MDB planning to thrash Misty a second time for content
In RBY, any pokemon with base speed of 64 or over will have a crit chance of 255/256 with any high crit rate move. So Venusaur and Victreebel will practically always crit with Razor Leaf.
Is that after accuracy checks? Because if I remember right, accuracy in Gen 1 is bugged where if the accuracy check rolls 256 it misses because it’s only looking for numbers lower than 256.
So if crit and accuracy are part of the same check that would mean it either crits or it misses. Which is crazy.
@@AceWolf456 two separate checks with the same coding mistake (a less than instead of a less than or equal to) and the accuracy bug doesn't apply to razor leaf, as razor leaf isn't 100% accurate.
One challenge I had in mind for a pretty long time: A Pokémon game (you can choose which one) with only one Togepi. I however do recommend having on that lil guy a Serene Grace and not hustle, trust me, it will make the run MUCH MORE managable.
Staryu/Starmie are my favorite mons, loved this challenge!
Fallout 4 Challenge idea: Ballout 4. Only weapons that shoot some kind of ball. Striker (Bowlingballs), Broadsider (Canonballs) and the Cryolator (projectiles look like snowballs).
Ice beam, Psychic, Thunderbolt, and Surf is all you need.
You really never need to apologize because of life I enjoy your videos regardless of if it comes out later or early
Proposed challenge for Fallout 4: Graverobber Challenge. You cannot loot anything (except quest items, bobbleheads, and magazines) from any container that isn't a corpse. You cannot loot any items (except quest items, bobbleheads, and magazines) sitting out in the world unless they're placed by Bethesda (or a mod creator) in a way that implies a person/creature/robot/etc., had it on them when they died. You can only spend caps that were looted from a source the previous two rules made viable, or obtained by selling items thusly looted. You may loot corpses (and items implied to have been on them upon death) that you did not make yourself (you don't have to have been the one to kill somebody/something, in order to claim their loot). For the purposes of this challenge, destroyed robots, piles of goo/ash, and any other form of remains that used to be-or be part of-some entity with at least some semblance of life, are all considered corpses.
I've done this one before, but I have an unhealthy obsession with Gen 1 Pokemon and its wackiness so I remembered about the good TMs earlier which definitely gave me an easier time. Did I miss something or did you just miss the Psychic TM? It would have made Agatha a lot less scary, though finding room for it can be a bit annoying if your moveset is Thunderbolt, Ice Beam, Surf, and Recover like it's very likely to be.
Cody Rhodes disliked this video. That's a part of his story he doesn't want to talk about.
about the outro- heres the issue with putting it on twitter and then saying you dont even need to make an account- thats no longer true now because you cant see more than one tweet without being logged in (if you click a link to a tweet you can see the tweet but no replies, or if youre on their profile you can see the top tweet.). Now thankfully youre the type who tends to put it in the playlist even if its unlisted so we can watch it from there, but sadly one most likely has to make a twitter account noe to see the tweet w/ the link
anyways this was a super fun run, I love watching your videos!
I wish Mah-Dry-Bread would just tell us what fossil he gets when doing gen 1 runs. It's so frustrating when content creators don't answer the key questions everyone wants.
Rival Fival has a single regular potion!?! I've literally NEVER seen him use that before and I both watch (and occasionally do) many pokemon challenges to relax.
I would like to see Platinum with a Yanma, things like the steel and rock gym seem like really interesting obstacles
Love these pokemon challenge runs! I watch them every week. I'd love to see runs involving Swinub, he's such a cute little piggy
I did this with Soul Silver back in August and it was a fun run. Even beat red with it. It took it being lvl 100 and sheer luck but in all probably the most fun I've had with a challenge run.
gen1 razor leaf is effectively guaranteed shot. normally tghe crit chance is basespeed over /256 for high crit moves like razor leave base speed/64. Venusaur has 80 base speed. so the crit chance is actually 125% if my math is right^^
without even watching this im gonna say probably lol. Staryu/Starmie is arguably one of the greatest pokemon competitively ever, between having a great typing (psychic being broken in gen 1) and between surf/thunderbolt/psychic/ice beam or recover, youre basically unstoppable, now if only it wasnt one of my least favorite pokemon because at the end of the day its still just a starfish, when I have choices like cannon turtle, literal dragon and a half lizard/half mantis
At 7:49 he says the water gyms while he means the electric gym :D
Yoooooooooooo. I've been watching your challenge videos for a while, and for the longest time I've been like "aw man... i can't relate because I know almost nothing about WWE". However, I DO know who Stardust is because he was also on the show Arrow, snd I looooooove that show. Long story short, I'm so happy i was able to get the reference!
Stardust...ah I remember! He was a very short lived character of Cody Rhodes (The American Nightmare) when he was teaming with his brother Goldust.
After Misty no easy gyms until Blaine...you know with Erika and Koga...it would be a SHAME if you could get and use both the Ice Beam and Psychic TMs...oh wait...you can!
So on the topic of weird moves that Staryu can learn - No honorable mention of Skull Bash?
Great video as always, thanks MDB.
I'm surprised you didn't try using psychic at all. Would have been helpful.
Funny how, after watching literally every Gen 1 video MDB has made, I never know what fossil he picks.
I'm sure someone already said it, but a grass Pokemon with Razor Leaf and a normal Pokemon with something like Slash is basically a 100% crit chance in gen 1
One of these days, you'll take the Dome fossil, for those of us who pay attention.
He did, when he did the Gen 1 fossil run because Omanyte can get through the Rock gym with water gun
Starmie on my Pokemon Stadium playthrough carried me well, thanks for the tip on that one.
I never stop thinking of Stahhhhrrrrrdust!
It would be so funny that you do the Fossil gag but choosing the Dome Fossil while saying you picked the Helix Fossil.
ah, Staryu. Any pokemon with BoltBeam should be fun, because it can hit any and every pokemon for at least neutral damage
Being named after Stardust. What a nightmare.
Yay,I love these pokemon challenges.
Huh... TIL you can fight Blaine before Erica. That's neat.
God. I have some real good dumb memories of Haven and Hearth. Had a group of like half a dozen who played together and tried to allocate roles. Everyone would spawn and try to find the best place to set up a village and then everyone else would have to make the unmapped trek across the world to meet up with them. Last time I played we ended up with some Russian neighbors who would come by the village gates and yell... something at us.
Also boars are a nightmare.
Would love to see a run with any pokemons you want but without any stab or super effective moves! Should be kinda easy but a fun change up! Keep up the good work
MDB talking about weird TM moves Staryu learns. Yeah, Thunderbolt is strange.
However! Skull Bash stands out more. Staryu has no face, let alone a head.
Staryu ready to rock!!!!????
Challenge idea Pokemon gold with gen 1 erikas team and moves since it's gen 2 grass type will be hard to use
When you need an easy week, any gen with Gardevoir
You should have named it American Nightmare. 😂 Love Cody Rhodes!
Suggestion of a run: Only Victini in Gen 5 (should be an interesting run in terms of moveset and strategy to be as low level as possible)
MDBAMA: Any recommendations for what to check out in Vancouver?
I feel a slight bias coming from this suggestion
I have a challenge and this is. You are only allowed to use an old rod, a good rod and a super rod to catch 3 pokemon. You are allowed to have your starter for the whole game to make it a bit better.
Staryu has always been one of my favorites, and I blame the anime for becuase of its battle cry.
"It was super easy."
... Go on.
Pokémon Platinum using Cranidos and/or Shieldon (team or solo run)
Also, I'm taking a page from your book and doing a Soul Silver run using only Chansey using your rules
10:23 I’ll bet… that Blaine will make smart decisions this time
WOOO!!! using my fav pokemon in pokemon red and blue :) thanks for the content once again!
Stardust? Our Stardust? Cody?
Challenge idea: Take your favorite bethesda game, use the week to practise a few speedrunning tricks, and then see how fast you can beat it on the last day.
Why didn't you get Ice Beam and Psychic for Erika and Koga!!!???
You can get both TM as soon as you reach Celadon.
That was almost painful to watch.
Just as a notification that you probably have read a 1000 times but your banner at 3:27 still has twitter and not „x“ in it. Love your videos keep up the good work my guy.
Everyone will always just call it Twitter
I'm honestly glad he still calls it Twitter and still uses the blue bird icon.
Odd that MDB didn't teach Staryu: Thunderbolt, Surf, Psychic, & Blizzard/Ice Beam as soon as possible
Here’s a run idea possibly only Ragnarola and name him Rocky not the boxer but Patrick’s pet rock from SpongeBob
I've never heard of haven and hearth but it sounds cool. As for suggestions I'm going to stick with my go to of pokemon gold/silver with a single Murkrow
Ooh I bet that'll be brutal but entertaining lol
I just did my own challenge run on fire red with only one Vulpix. And oh my gosh it was not easy. I would like to see you give it a try as well. But another challenge I’d like to see is Platnium with only Glameow
I would love a Aaron run, he is my go yo steel type is the cutest thing ever
One of Staryu's greatest strengths is type coverage through its amazing TM learnset. It can learn the most powerful and useful moves in all of Gen 1.
Better not take advantage of that. Might make the run too quick and easy, I guess.
Apple Juice, Chocolate Syrup, Yellow Soda
Ohhhh, so THAT was a good fun challenge to try, not Pokemon Firered with only gulpin that made me have to get to level 92 because the champion's ARCANINE of all things was being a pain in the ass that I had to use attract to beat and also I had to switch between movesets each fight? Right, right, noted.
Also, this is a callout post, do Pokemon Firered with only gulpin, it's painful but still bizarrely fun
I might have an interesting challenge. Gen 2 with getting the whole Tyrogue line into the hall of fame. It might not be as hard combat-wise, but more on the planning. And it will incorporate breeding, I think that will be a first
I'm a huge Cody fan so I think of Stardust all the time xD
9:20 honestly wondering why at this point the moveset isn’t some combination of the following: thunderbolt, ice beam, psychic, surf and recover
Jrose will overpower the water gym after he already beat it. 7mins 50sec
One day he'll take the other fossil and I'll fall off my sofa
Do Emerald with only Poochyena.
I would still say, do a run with moves with power under 50
Swablu run would be nice :) emerald of course :)
Awesome run! Excited for the fallout 4 run, whatever it is lol.
Okay now you need to do a Goldeen run with it named Golddust. Though Im still waiting for a Snubull only run with it named Davy boy
Ugh this is mildly painful. You had so many moves to use! What where you doing.
Can't wait for the day that mah dry doesn't do the fossil bit and there is anarchy
pls do pokemon with only the pokemon game corner pokemon! dont evolve them i would love to see a video like that !
Am I the only one thinking that mah dry bread now needs to do psywave only run 😂 3 damage to victory
Pokémon FireRed with Mew, but rival has Mewtwo, please!
Loved the run, loved the Stardust reference! At least one of you finished the story. But I can't BELIEVE you didn't get TM29, MDB! I just automatically link Psychic to the Star-evoline.
Still love to see you try geodude in emerald.
play with just the game corner prize pokemon, could be fun
Watching your playthroughs, feels like coming home!
