That roof panel is easily in the best condition, compared to what else we’ve seen on the car. I doubt the antennae hole would have surprised anyone, but the vacuum hose, on the mirka kit is worth its weight, just in the time saved in cleaning up aloe. And you wouldn’t be blowing out multi coloured boogers for days after 😏
My only question is, why did you apply primer before welding up the hole?

The XU1 is coming along very nicely. My XU1 was about 5 years old & the front screen had to be replaced ,the vehicle was always garaged. Under the windscreen rubber, there was also corrosion, I had to weld to repair. I went to Eagers to purchase a new rubber a guy in spare parts told the original rubbers were made of a reactive material, causing the corrosion issue. The replacement was of a different grade of material to prevent this problem. It made me think I have seen a few since with the same problem. Cheers guys.

I like how you guys do all the metal and even spraying work.

The roof aerial is definitely not factory, if a radio was optioned the aerial was fitted to the left front guard about 6” from the back of the guard.

Not a factory option, which has already been mentioned. The aerial hole in my LJ was above the mirror mount plate. Keep up the good work.

They was not a factory thing but a dealer could have them fitted for you,,, other than that you would do them your self. Cheers

The silicon and sponge on the cross member I don't believe is factory. Normally the factory sound deadening would take up any slop but it looks as if most of the deadening has been removed. Let me know if you need a photo of what it should look like.

Another great episode again lads. I assume you primed the roof prior to welding was just to seal the steel to prevent surface rust? Im guessing a time factor or lack of to weld the roof antenna hole? looking forward to the next one cheers!

Was there a fight as to whose side aerial hole was located?

Why didn't you just prime quarter at say time? Save time and no joins in primer. Each to their own. Cant wait to see colour go on 👍

Coming out of Harry Firth smash repairs if memory serves me the turret aerial came fab standard in the 2 door ford escort story around radio reception was the higher the aerial the better the reception mind you this was back before they put suppressors standard on plug leads.but the Torana Arial were on the L/H/G closer to the motor hence that horrible wizzing should when you rev the car. Then the centre Arial became that must go to have of the late 70s early 80 back when surfing pot smoking hippies loved the sandman P van ah yes I remember those beach parties well so you didn't get the sand rash when you met the love of your stoned life the back of your van was home away from home now all the little Shirley's book a hotel cry babies 😅

Fantastic build guys can’t wait to see it finished! I’ve watched most of the videos and keep noticing Chateau Mauve overspray in areas it would only get from factory as seen @ 12:14 under the turret in this video, and on the door frame under trim area in previous a video. Is this a genuine XU1 or a replica? Either way keep up the great work!!

I reckon that you may be on to something there, the inside of the turret is all sprayed out in black too, instead of the colour overspray. It's very common for these things to happen, especially xu1's.

when your tig welding the hole in the roof, do you always have the tungsten so short? it seemed really short?
