But why is it terrible, its because of these small little things he's describing that you are doing, many small adjustments amount to a bigger change as you master it
The problem with the first one is that it doesn't actually have a musical idea. You didn't fix it by adding sustained notes, you added an actual bassline and came up with a core melodic idea.
It all comes down to what you want your music to sound like. And if you DESIRE to know, study the fundamentals of music itself and going up to the advance ones, obtain, observe, analyze, interviews, creative process, techniques, concepts, ideas, theories, theories, psychology, business. And then go back and break the rules and see what works best for you because you got the broad knowledge, that's how it should really be done honestly 😂😂 Theres no shortcuts, you would just be doing the same thing anyways but with more confusion ahead of your learning process. I've experienced this myself from a lot of things that needs learning. Find the deep cuts and what gives thing the meaning behind it.
I am familiar with most of what you said but what does color mean in this scenario? The only thing I'd describe as color is light distortion with mild studio reverb
A good tip to fill low mid that i use is: 1.duplicate a synth or a pad 2. Add half time and play with the ‘release’ and ‘speed’ setting to give it a fitting rhythm 3. Eq everything but from 250hz -550hz or so 4. Adjust volume to make it sit 5. Do some stereo imaging to give it more depth

Not an expert on music, just a fan. The second beat I think should feel bigger somehow. I feel like it could knock harder if different elements were added one at a time, so as you're listening the beat gets filled in to its final form if that makes sense.
When you said some of my best friends are low energy I laughed out loud. Plus the beat fix for Stick Guy was dope. I feel like his version could still be used as the intro to segue into yours
Sometimes the beat just isn't good unless there's vocals on it too. That first beat could've sounded great with a Peggy verse on it. Remember guys, the beat is never the end goal; it's a foundation for a full song.
Actually the biggest problem is making music with minimal music knowledge, and I don't necessarily mean theory, I mean underdeveloped ear/inner ear. If you have no conception of how you want your music to sound, it's more likely to be lackluster
hay loved ur vid man, but i have one comment in 10:43 about the stock plug-ins isn't just more about how u pick ur sounds from these stock plugins than just every stock plugin isn't suitable for beat making ? surely if u puck the right sound with the right fx-s it will always sound right . I kinda get what u on with these plugins r more suitable for dance music but still u can always make any sound work with ur beat if u just pick the right one doesn't matter the plug in
I agree but it's harder and more time consuming if you don't have knowledge. Some people can sound design whatever they want but for most people it's easier to use better plugins.
@sideshow4463 yh i get that i myself use 3rd party plugin alot but my point is u don't really need them like he is say i just need to know how to make the sound u pick to work
My biggest problem is that my 808s become boring/ repetitive. If I add variation, then it sounds like it's too much but if I remove some, then it becomes boring.
whenever i have this issue i just find a reference track that somewhat resembles what i want my track to sound like. it's genuinely a cheat code to making good music because you're just copying what worked for someone else.
whenever i see “music professionals” give tips, most of the time they haven’t really done anything with their music career and just post yt vids which makes me skeptical to listen to their advice. you letting me know that you’re a qualified artist who’s worked with many people and produced quality stuff makes me feel a lot better 👍👍
there is good reason to be skeptical, people who are super busy with a music career, running a studio etc will not have time to dedicate to making professional quality YT videos weekly unless they have a team with them. There just isn't enough time unless you want to work 16 hours a day 7 days a week. That said, there are plenty of people who have professional level expertise who do not do music full time for various reasons, mostly that its way easier to get a high paying steady job in other fields and still make money on the side with music. Some peoples "side hustle" makes more $$$ than other peoples "full time professional career" in music ;)
Deadass, just with the thumbnail alone you can tell that the channel rack is going thru hell. 💀 not going to watch the video cause I’m lazy but for starters, the thumbnail is spot on. I stopped using the channel rack like that due to how much more flexible you can be if you split different sounds, samples, etc into different channels n stuff. They are pretty good for looping samples and tho if u mess with the time knob and cut it em through those windows. But that’s just my process or what was due to my laptop shitting the bed :P definitely helped me organize with mixing a lot better that shit used to be all over the place
Just gonna grab that checklist real quick.. ahem. lol Great stuff, Navie! Consistently. Would you have any advice on call backs and just overall composing? I struggle with "telling a story", if you will. I should probably admit that most of my stuff isn't created with lyrics in mind. (Not to say it can't be.. lol) So, using bridges, key changes, and the like are difficult to formulate or conceptualize for me. I'm talking hip hop, but, (and probably more relevantly) other genres apply, obviously. Much respect to you, and thanks for the entire package that you deliver on YT and beyond. cheers!
You changed the genre of that first beat completely😂. I still love the results tho. And, your advice would still apply even if you kept it in the same genre
Before I watch it I’m going to assume and edit after 1)noise 2)panning 3)sound selection 4)compression 5)humanization Post watch: 1) sound selection 2) space 3) movement 4) sound selection 5) full spectrum Great advice. Dream big ❤
The key is to learn how to master you mixing skills. And I learned you don't need extra B.S. in all your beats. Certain beats can constantly stay on repeat while others go by a certain orchestra pattern. That's it that's all.
I try to give 16 bar spaces (3 minimum that size) with my beat making... My issue usually is adding too much alongside my sample flips I use whether it's two different parts sampled (for example one for the chorus and the other for the verse)
That long "ahhh" would probably sound really good as a bass reverb, 808's are great but if you overuse them it can become forgettable. Also big oof on that 3rd track. Sounds like a depression commercial. Needs some rhythm work to make those sharp notes to feel right.
Here Is my top and only tip to making better “beats”. Stop thinking of them as beats and start thinking of them as compositions. I know this generation doesn’t seem to read or value “boomer” things but learning music theory and composition will make your creations way better than a collection of RUclips / tik tok tricks. Understanding how to always have a balance of articulations like legato and staccato, learning counter motion, and using all the octaves in your chords are a few things that will really improve your “beats”.
I think Stickguy's original beat was actually pretty cool, but it definitely wasn't "energetic." The first thing I thought when I heard it was "if you want it to be energetic, you might wanna turn up the bpm a bit my dude."
What's up, Navie? I've been making beats for a few months now, and i was wondering if I could send you a couple beats to check out and possibly get some feedback from you ❤
Just keep experimenting and creating. The best way to learn is not by listening to every tip on youtube. The best way to learn is by doing. Focus on what frequencies are being occupied. I hear so many people just adding pad after pad and just copying the same midi region. Experiment with pitching your layers around, experiment with panning, levels, ect... The hardest part is allowing yourself to continue creating, even when you know you suck. It's all worth it when you make that first song that you're proud of.
I also think that at first, keep things simple. Learning to create movement in your tracks when you're limited to bass, drums, and keys (and maybe some other instrument for the melody if you don't want your melody to blend with the keys sound) will be incredibly helpful later on, when you start adding more layering. If you're focused on making hits, first you've got to learn how to make a bad song... and then you listen to that bad song and you learn what you like and don't like from it. Compare yourself to yourself. The worst thing you can do is try and use references tracks at first. Plus you'll hear your own improvement and it will really show you how much you've learned.
Bro has a halftime drum loop that might even be further slowed down and goes “why doesn’t this have energy” well you don’t throw Tyler The Creator or ASAP Ferg on it is probably the issue otherwise maybe that lol
I mean, unless its percussive, adding an organ to a beat means it stops being a beat, and just becomes a song. You didn't really fix the first beat, just did the next step for them.
That second one felt fine. I agree with the lack of depth to some extent, but you really just made it sound like it was playing from the bottom of a well.
