- BCIT's AME - M students are required to be familiar with installation and details of BF Goodrich RivNuts, a blind fastener capable of accepting standard threaded hardware. The clips here show installation using 2 different RivNut tools.
Back in the day, when I built aircraft, I wish I had these, especially for repair!
D Wetick - the purpose of the notch, as explained many years ago, was to prevent the RivNuts from rotating during installation of the threaded fastener. It always seemed a bit "cagey," because a notch at the edge of a hole looks like a natural place for a crack to start, no?
Great video, had to see installation procedure as I am analyzing a structure for a customer. Can you tell me what MIL-Spec or National Aero Standard these meet?
That looks like a nutsert... as opposed to a Rivnut.
May i know how much the body length of rivnut gets reduced after riveting ?? because the body length mentioned by various supplier on catalog is the original one and not the final one after riveting process
At 1:38 you show the turning of the allen wrench to pull or set the rivnut. This is the incorrect method, the allen wrench should be stationary, used to hold the rivnut and installation tool steady and perpendicular to the work piece. Using the method you show risks the threads turning within the rivnut, which may cause galling, stripping, or other defects. The 3/4" wrench (in this case) is what should be turned to provide the pull force, as it uses the internal bearing surface and the outer, larger threads to pull. Much less risk of damage to both the tool and the rivnut.
Thanks, and an excellent point. The thread engagement inside the Rivnut should be kept still, and only the wrench turned. I'm glad you pointed that out - viewers should be aware that the allen wrench is not to be rotated.
Thanks to McCartney Paint and Custom.
That's correct - you do not need to access the blind side of a RivNut for installation purposes. The video shows a sample piece of sheet metal in a bench vise, which is merely showing the distortion of the body of the RivNut during the process. There are often areas of aircraft where you cannot reach with tooling.
cool video! he looks like billy-bob thornton!
Do handheld rivet machines also work on 1.5 mm thick stainless steel square tubing? I mean what is the thickness limit for stainless steel?
I like the speed setter tool, but my God did they make changing the mandrels on that thing a damned near impossible task.
Hi, Adonay ~ no, my memory for Mil specs is not that good. But what you can do is talk to a local supplier of rivets and they will be able to give you the Mil specs. Our typical Rivnut part number was something like A10-K80, which I think was a GoodYear product. They're a very common aluminum body fastener, and many suppliers offer them. Or, you can research the part number on the internet. K.
Is it possible to install without a special tool?
I have one place that I would like to use a rivnut ...
Hi, SeaPeddler... I would imagine a company like Aviall would be able to supply you with RivNuts and pullers. Or, perhaps less expensive, would be the mail-order houses like aircraft spruce
K
where can i buy the tool with the allen key?
Where can one purchase these rivet-nuts and tool in the Lower Mainland?
No backside access required??
thats a stretch
thank you for this show
