At a little after 9 PM, on Wednesday, November 16th, 2016, 63-year-old Karen Osborne was winding down after a busy day. She and her husband Ronald were retired and were doting grandparents of their grandchildren. Their daughter lived only a few yards away through a stand of trees, so visiting them was easy and enjoyable.
The sun had just set when Karen’s daughter’s dog began barking incessantly. She decided she would use the flashlight feature of her cell phone to light her way through the woods and see what all the fuss was about. Before stepping out the door, she clicked a leash onto her dog's collar, and the two disappeared into the darkness without bear spray or a firearm.
As she made her way along the bushy trail and onto the side of her daughter’s driveway, she could see her daughter’s dog barking at the base of a tree. Suddenly a low rumbling growl encompassed Karen from behind and she turned to see a black bear towering over her standing on its hind legs. The bear had emerged from bushes only a few feet from her, so she had very little time to react to its presence.
The angry sow clamped its jaws around Karen’s face and tossed its head, sending her sprawling to the ground. As Karen tried to regain her senses, the bear approached her from behind and bit onto her arm, shattering the bones and ripping muscles and tendons. Karen’s screams filled the darkness, but no one heard them or responded to her cries.
Struggling with the pain and trauma of the sudden attack, Karen was helpless to stop the sow from biting onto the top of her head. The bear’s inch and a half long canines punched through her scalp and ripped painful gashes causing her to scream and flail her arms. Using Karen’s scalp as a handle, the sow pulled the woman forward and tried to get a new grip with her jaws on Karen’s neck.
Using her bunched-up fist to block the sow’s jaws, Karen realized this was a fight to the death as far as the bear was concerned. She couldn’t just let it tear her apart anymore. She struck out at the bear with her fist in four quick punches. The sow didn’t flinch but circled around Karen one more time, looking for a better angle from which to attack.
Having worked its way behind Karen, the sow punched her to the ground facefirst, with one of its paws. Using her body weight the sow pinned Karen down and bit her several times over her legs, arms, and the back of her head. Each time the bear bit, pain seared through Karen’s body and she twitched in reaction.
Pressed face down, Karen could feel the sow’s hot stinky breath pelting the back of her neck. Karen knew there was no way she could resist the bear any longer. It was far too powerful and her energy was fading.
For over thirty minutes this bear mauled and tore at Karen’s flesh and now the woman was exhausted. The sow was also tired and was breathing heavily as she tried to kill Karen. At the point she had no more energy to resist, Karen curled up into the fetal position and lay still.
The bear was pacing around, digging at the ground like a bull getting ready to charge as it snapped its jaws together menacingly. Groping around slowly Karen searched for her cell phone. She had to reach out to someone for help but in the confusion and speed of the bear attack, it had been knocked from her grasp along with the hope of calling the police.
As she focused on laying still, Karen felt a hard bump beneath her thigh. She had found her cell phone. Slowly moving her uninjured arm she retrieved it and tried to dial 911. Her first attempt failed as well as the next two, but on her fourth try, she managed to get a hold of a male dispatcher.
The audio of Karen’s 911 call is too graphic to post on RUclips, so I have linked to it on the Patreon link below. Pictures of her injuries and photos of the bear and her cubs are there too. Joining our Cub Tier membership for three dollars per month will grant you access to view them and help us continue to create content like this.
Frederick County Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to Karen’s location and arrived within 15 minutes of her call. The officers came loaded for bear, literally, with rifles in hand while they secured the scene. Paramedics loaded Karen onto a stretcher as they worked on stopping the bleeding from her numerous wounds.
The ambulance rushed Karen to Meritus Medical Center about twenty miles away in Hagerstown. While searching for the bear, deputies located a 50-pound cub in a tree, but could not find the sow.
While at the trauma center, it was discovered that the bear’s initial bite on
All the ladies in Appalachia will tell you if you hear something outside at night, pretend you didn't hear it and stay indoors. 😊
You don't understand. Her daughter live close by and She heard her dog barking She went outside to check if her baby is ok. Bear was also just protecting her cubs. Wrong time wrong place
That's Internet lore. 😉 There's nothing to worry about in these woods except black bears, wild boar, bobcats, coyotes, the occasional rabid raccoon, and meth lab operators. Probably still some old time moonshiners, I guess, seeing as how I found a rusty old still barrel in the forest below my house a few years ago. We don't need feral humans and cryptids in order to have respect for these woods and their inhabitants.
Oh, and the occasional serial killer on the loose. I heard something crashing around on the dry leaves in my yard one January night while serial killer Gary Hilton was still on the loose. Turns out he did eat at the Huddle House a few miles up the road from me around that time. I called the cops and they came and took me very seriously. The next day, I did find big new footprints in the dirt, but I don't know if it was the cops or someone else.
Men do that too, sometimes ! 😆
She went outside at night into the woods, with a cell phone as a flashlight, with no weapons just because her dog was barking? What on earth? The dog was warning her there was something in the woods-not to go serve herself to the bears for dinner. It sounds like a territorial attack, because the bear approached her from the front and bit her face. The sow was probably trying to protect her cubs, otherwise she could have used the element of surprise to ambush her from behind and eat her.
Of all the attacks on this channel, this one takes the cake for human stupidity. It was completely preventable with some common sense.
Her dog was barking cos he heard her daughter's dog who lives near by. She went to check on her baby
I wouldn't say you can "easily" fend off a black bear! After a half- hour attack it pretty amazing that Karen was still alive! Karen, be proud that you survived the attack! You're amazing! Next time you go out for a walk, at least have bear spray with you! 🤔🥰😱👍
Why would anyone ever enter the woods at dark to inquire about any kind of disturbance? There is nothing going on in the woods that you really want to discover at that time of day. Of course in Maryland it is difficult to carry a firearm outside you house. Some of the best advice I ever got was "Don't so stupid stuff."
Paleo, Wait til one comes INTO your house after you. Friend returned home & found his cabin door ripped off just after dark. Going inside there was TWO grizzlies ransacking his kitchen. All he had was a 44 & a weak flashlight in the dark. 1st shot broke the flashlight but he knew hed hit the closest bear in the face. Was shooting blind at the other. Got it!! ( 3-4 foot shots. Next day Toms wife showed up, was royally pissed at all the blood in her kitchen. Didnt care he almost got killed.
@@tristantimothy1004 Well, that's interesting but it has nothing to do with chasing bears in the dark, in a forest with no defensive tools. Of course, I carry everywhere and I probably wouldn't enter my home if I found a door broken open and heard two bears ripping the place apart. There is nothing in my home that valuable to risk confronting even one bear.
🤦♀️
@@PaleoCon2008This is the Alaska bush bud, where else you gonna go? Tom didn't know the bears were in his cabin til after he was inside w them. And EVERYONE up here carries a gun for bears. Usually several stationed around the houses for instant access due to bear break ins. Thats pretty common up here. Its the irony of the story. And his bit(# wifes reaction. ( Now X wife) Glad you have sence enough to stay armed in questionable places. Living out here bear contacts are almost a daily occurrence. Thoes damn things are EVERYWHERE. Not a place for the faint of heart. Blackies are so common were legally allowed to take 3 per family member for winter food. Only 1 grizzly per year. 40+ years, only 5 attacks out of 1000s of contacts. Even our 6 year old kids can handle semi auto short bbl shotguns w hot loaded bear slugs & shoot from the hip so it doesn't knock em down. Funny part, we're safer out here than in the shythole city we left to move here. Lil kids w full auto Uzies killing each other for crack turf. Lil Cartell bangers. Were safer w the bears.....
@@tristantimothy1004is it possible to build a bear proof door?
Karen should have stayed home.
The attack was defensive. Bear attacks in Maryland are extremely rare. The dogs had stressed the sow and she walked right on it without seeing it.
the filthy sowvwas trespassing on HER domain, and it KNEW that.
The dog's barking in the middle of the night....hmmm, let me head out TOTALLY UNPREPARED for a potential animal or human threat.
Some people just not very bright.
The sow was just protecting her cubs. She was doing what any mother would have done.
Yes I think her cubs will continue eating out of the garbage cans, it's a learned behavior at this point. This is what happens when homes are built in bear's territory. Sad.
That's a silly comment. Do you have any idea how much of North America is in bear territory? If all of the homes in bear territory disappeared, a huge portion of North America would be uninhabitable and there wouldn't be enough room for all of the displaced people. If you want more room for bears, you should advocate for humans to lower their birth rates. Every single baby people have will soon be an adult requiring their own home.
Why do they build homes in bear territory??? That's just strange!
That sow sure was sneaky going a different angle!!🐻
There are a lot of non thinking Americans through out this country (notice i did not say stupid).....Matter of fact imho it is somewhat alarming!
Oh my goodness I live where black bear are plentiful. I carry because of them. The other day a woman was killed by a black bear in Lecture Country Kentucky
What happened?! I live in KY.
@@MultiZoobie Its Letcher County and in multiple KY news stations.
Tough lady whose perseverance got her thru this attack. My kinda woman!
You 😂forgot stupid. Who comes outside to investagate a noise in bear county
OMG! I would not have gone outside after dark or have been in the woods. Even the dog left her. There is just no way.
The first nation's tribes managed wild life and habitat for thier grandkids to nunt with handmade bows for thoussnds of years before the first settelers mismanged pristine forest into unproductive fire hazard wooded lots
dont shoot yourself
I will never forget when this happened. This is BERG I grew up in Middletown. Once flicked a cig onto a black bear in my mothers back yard on accident it was creeping in the bushes on manda drive
All I am going to say is, common sense is not so common nowadays. 🤦🏻♀️
Karen why were you in the woods? At night…. With nothing to protect you? Girl no… you’re not hunting.. … you’re just being nosey… Karen… I’m sorry but I feel bad for the bear… (Karen antics)
This is too funny haha
So where were those yapping dogs during the attack? I had 4 little dogs, 3 under 10 lbs and one massive 18 lb rat terrier that I know would have at least run in and pinched that bear on a hind foot especially if it was attacking me. I'm amazed she lived. I hope she has/had a full recovery. Mostly I hope she gets herself a good brave dog and some bear spray.
How on earth did this woman survive such a trauma. God bless her.
Sounds like this was a hungry momma bear!!! Even though cubs involved, this sow attacking 4 times and this lady defensive on the ground this bear should have moved on with cubs. But seemed to continue attacking so I do not believe this was completely defensive. Just my POV glad this poor lady survived a very brutal attack. I totally understand why this bear had to be put down! And, I do believe these cubs will continue digging in trash bins and around people as this is evidently what the sow was teaching them. Sad but true. thanks Addicus for covering another scary bear attack 👍😍
Every video. Present of the area and animal to invoke familiarity. Great work Atticus.
Are women still choosing bears over men.🤔
Lol
Hopefully not on purpose, they're foolish if they believe that bears are always safer. Many of them avoid humans, but the ones who don't are terrifying. 😮 EspeciaIIy grizzly bears.
Yes. Yes they are. 😅😊🐻🐻 Grizzle Grizzle
The evil men out there that are about 0.5% of all men are far more terrifying than the average bear. Think the toy box killer. That's the spectre that haunt many women's nightmares. About 1 in 3 women have been SA. Would you trust men after being SA by one? I think not.
@@redelfshotthefood8213 you would have to be a fool to believe the 1 in 3 stat
Addicus sweetie pie I'm confused can you let me know how to donate the $3 for cub tear membership? If you already have my card on file Steph was saying it would be easier for me thank you❤
Goodness, curiousity got the best of Karen, unfortunately. There's NO way I'd go investigate anything in the woods!!! She's very lucky, she had a guardian angel w/her that day. Prayers for Karen & her family. 🙏🙏🙏
I am concerned that going to the extreme of dispatching a bear after a brutal attack seems to be a trend. Considering that the sow had three cubs is understandable that she would be acting in defense. How about mandating municipalities to take the same steps to dissuade bears from entering urban areas in search of food as the national parks do. People need to start cleaning up behind themselves and securing garbage containers ( bear proofing ) to help curb this needless slaughter of our wildlife.
Hungry bears are beginning to break into buildings following the scent of food. This channel has videos on these stories now.
@@daveeymundson6800 if its a attack by a sow protecting cubs thats non fatal or doesnt result in grievious injury they try to relocate or avoid killing the bear its when the attack is so serious the bear repeatedly attacks then it can become learned behavior and unfortunately they have to kill the bear.
Sometimes in attacks too they have to sadly kill the bear due to them been aggressive and guarding their victim and not letting rescuers near to save the victim. A lot of defensive attacks can turn predatory once the bear has mauled a victim and they'll protect their then in their mind food source
Thanks for the video. An angel was her protection. I think the black bear was protecting her cubs. My thoughts on Karen why did she go out by herself and no protection. Also knowing there were complaints that a black bear was around.
Love your channel on RUclips I keep watching be safe bear country 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👍👍👍👍👍👍👍✌️✌️✌️✌️✌️✌️
Where did the dog go?
Dog gone. 😅😅🐻🐻
Yeah there were 2 of them, one at the daughter's place and she took one along ? I wonder if they distracted the bear between attacks ?
She shouldn't have ventured into the woods at night, in all seriousness. I am sorry this happened but that's really not wise.
The lady should not have gone out there by herself to investigate! Someone should have been with her and had protection like bear spray or a gun! I really feel bad for this lady, but you never know what is out there you really need to be careful! I truly hope and pray she is doing well today! I’m so sorry that happened to her! 😢
😂She brought that on herself for being well? stupid.
I believe id get a new dog the one she has is defective 😂damn dog didn’t even try to help her that dog said you on your own im outta here good luck lady 😂
Aye yo he was mad petty for saying the angel was black and blue!
Too many black bears, it's over kill like so many things are. It's about common sense!
No mention of the dog during the attack, probably ran home and waited on the porch
😂
I have black bears in my area ! My neighbor, who is a buddy of mine killed one almost 600 pounds in the woods behind mine & his house that’s on a sandy ridge next to that is next to a bad swamp which is in our hunting club land ! I do not walk to my shop at night without a big caliber pistol in one hand & a flashlight in the other! There is a reason they were eliminated from this area in the last couple of hundred years! Then re-introduced in the last thirty years without any input from residents! coyotes also because they made a mistake not allowing any harvesting of does for many many years and now there’s too many so they introduce coyotes this just shows management doesn’t know what the hell they’re doing ! ! !
But you moved into the bear’s territory first without getting any input from them. Humans think they are far superior and deserving than any other of God’s creations.
@@agnetha2012 Humans are superior. Since you mentioned God and His Creation you have no excuse for not knowing what God states in Genesis about mankind & creation.
@@LuvBorderCollies not in every situation. Man should not become arrogant and prideful. I know what God states in the book of Genesis. You don't need to condescend me.
Are you being loud as well as carrying a firearm in your hand? Announcing your presence loudly will give plenty of warning to even occupied bears. And. There isn't time to draw in an attack. They are sudden. Because minimizing risk to the bear means speed.
@@LuvBorderCollies No, they are not. What a despicable take.
Really? Just go right on into the woods at night to see what the dog is barking at.....
Nothing short of stupid. And the bear paid for it with her life and the cubs are orphans.
Shut up Debra
Karen calls 911 while being mauled by a bear and says “let me talk to your manager”
Women not going to have a gun no way😢
I can’t find the audio
It was her fault.
Absolutely stupid to go out in the dark in Nov. to "investigate" ANYTHING. The one big mistake she made that night.
SCARY!!
If only Karen had remembered her bear spray.
Nothing would have happened
When a bear see that can
They just run away😮
I from southern West Virginia i guess its in the region...ive noticed more sightings even struck by automobiles an typically the bears in this area are quite small usually the size of a big dog...
You think the dog with a Wonder. Always carry weapon
It makes sense to let what's occurring in the woods, stay in the woods.
Damn!!! I live in Baltimore County. I checked and I'm 64 miles from the attack. Damn!!!
Oh my goodness this was such a brutal attack that poor woman my heart breaks for her 💔
It was trying to kill her. It's what they do. Great video
As always great narrative and informative
I mean... It's not the worst idea
That thumbnail look like she has the bear on a leash
Yes,hungry,both,yes.
Good video
Karen should definitely call the manager of the wildlife department to complain…!?
I'm done watching videos where bears were killed because the humans were stupid enough to not bring any bear spray or other protection. Goodbye scary bear attacks
She's lucky to have been able to call for & get help.
Idk why they didn't take measures to haze the bear or somehow deter it from human areas if it was a known problem bear.
I wonder what happened with the dogs and if they were why the bear was distracted in between attacks. 🤔 I hope they educated everyone in the area how to avoid attracting bears and I hope the cubs stayed away and somehow managed on their own. ❤
Great story Addicus 😊
My guess is her attack was territorial --- the bear's name was "Karen" too.
Why didn't the dog help ???
Another scary episode! Thanks! Glad you survived, Karen! ❤️❤️❤️
I am going to lean towards the initial attack was to protect her cubs, but then turned predatory.
Theres a very large Black bear preservation area in North Florida that spans through three counties. The Black bear population has tripled in numbers and they're becoming a problem that gets worse every year. Its almost common to see bears now. Theres talk of culling or moving them to different areas. Theres a lot of hunting in the area, but nobody seems to want to hunt Black bear. Hopefully it won't take deaths of humans to fix the problem.
Yes they will
Black bears are nothing compared to grizzly bears. With a black bear you can easily fight it off if your of an average build. But grizzly bears, for sure you need a melee weapon or a gun to fend it off because you have NO chance against a grizzly no matter how strong you are. Thanks for this video 👍
Youve never been Black bear attacked have you. Pound for pound theyre 6 times stronger & with their fish hook claws can easily eviscerate even a large man if they so want. Once theyre as tall as you standing your on their menu. Luckily, being omnivores who can/ do eat anything most are not hungry enough to fully unleash their full power. If they do, Your dead no matter how tough you think you are. Against a predatory grizzly, you're twice as screwed.
Exactly, we have black bears over 800 lbs in PA. Good luck fighting off any bear, if they're determined to prey on you or kill you, you're done for unless you have a good weapon.
Black bear can do some real damage Look what happened to Karen We have some big black bear here in Virginia
@@metalmamasue3680, Back when i worked w the AK F&G dept i got to tead a lot of bear attack reports from all over America. In Minnesota hunters/ fishermen kept dissappearing in the same area so a F&G hunting team went in & found/ killed the bear responsable. Over 1000 lbs. Blackies keep growing as long as they have food enough to grizzly size. Usually by eating the smaller bears in their area. Thoes big bad bears are EVERYWHERE & get smarter/ more dangerous as they get bigger. I was attacked by a 10 footer near or remote cabin in Alaska. Dont know the weight but it took me 4 days to skin/ quarter that SOB & a winch to pull the quarters up into the 6 wheelers bed & another winch to pull the quarters into the bed of our pickup to take the meat out for folks in the nearest town. He fed a LOT of people. HE was killing & eating smaller grizzlies near my bait station. No telling how many other Black bears he got too.

It's amazing how different each animal has crazy temper's and some just walk along like a neighbor in the suburbs.
