At about 9 PM, shooting light was fading and the men were considering calling it a day when a big black bear ambled out of the bushes near the bait. They watched carefully, reading the bear’s body language to glean any information about it that they could pull. Before consuming any bait at the station, the black bear turned toward the men and stared in their direction. It pinned its ears back and chuffed, letting them know it knew they were there, and wasn’t happy about it.
Jon and Marvin knew they didn’t have a lot of time to waste if they were going to get this big fella. Jon drew a bead on the bear's vitals and let one rip from his hunting rifle. His aim was true, as the bear collapsed and tumbled down the hill 25 yards or so.
Marvin knew pursuing this bear in the dark was a no-go. He quickly strode to within 20 yards of where the bear lay and fired two shots with his pistol into its head. He had hoped to end any suffering the bear was enduring, but the bear was planning on inflicting a little suffering of its own.
Turning to his uncle after firing the two shots, Marvin was briefly distracted from the bear. He may have been thinking of how to get its carcass out before it was too dark, either way, when he glanced back that big ole black bear was already halfway to him. A brief panic overtook Jon with what he saw. He mistakenly ejected the clip from the rifle and scrambled to pick it up.
In a motion so practiced and perfect, the black bear swiped Marvin’s legs out from under him with one paw as it bit into his left arm at the same time. Scrambling for his sidearm, Marvin screamed, “he’s got me! He’s got me!”.
Hearing his nephew screaming for help, Jon tried to step down the hill but somehow tripped. Falling onto his face, he could do nothing to stop the bear from savaging Marvin.
In the time it took Marvin to do a full clip dump of 15 shots from his pistol, the black bear had tattered his left arm, and bitten several holes into his hip and lower back regions before collapsing.
Jon looked down at Marvin’s arm It looked more like a mass of bloody hamburger than a human arm. Marvin wasn’t considering waiting for help. He hopped onto his quad and drove to the home of a volunteer firefighter friend of his. The man notified authorities of Marvin’s bear attack and a medical helicopter was dispatched from Boise to a nearby spot to pick him up.

It was more likely a magazine, and not a clip. The shooter probably thought the bear was down after taking the two shots from his friend's handgun to finish it off, and he might have had his finger on the mag release about to take it out.

After reading some of the comments, many were upset that the guys used bait to get a bear. If it is allowed within the state with all the necessary tags that they have gotten, I do not have a problem I am a bear lover, I like those fury big predatory animals that can inflict pain to anyone of us in a heart beat. But Marvin did to feed his family for the year and many rather hunt for fresh meat than buy in the store the meat that has so many chemicals and has been sitting there for awhile. Marvin made mistakes that he will never forget and he will have dreams of that bear staring him down. Everything happens for a reason, but to wish him dead for killing the bear is wrong. You who made negative remarks do not realize what you say will have consequences in your life.

Here comes all the comments claiming how wrong it is to use bait. At the end of the day, as stated in the video, the state has a very high bear population with relatively low harvest numbers each year. Marvin and his family utilize the bear meat for their food. Sometimes it is that simple. Yet, many would criticize his actions as morally wrong, unfair to the bear, etc. while eating a burger from a cow raised in a fenced area for slaughter.

Firerams have been proven over time, in multiable bear attack situations to be the most effective personal safety defense devices available for stopping bear attacks. Such did eventually happen in this particular case, the bear was indeed stopped and killed. In many such situations the defenders are not injured. The critical key factors in order to be quickly effective in close proximity reactionary bear attacks is timing, shot placement, caliber and choosing the correct type of bullet and powder etc.

NEVER underestimate the endurance of an injured bear. They are on another level of power. From 30' away I once saw a 500lb bear, who had broken into my shed, jump an eight foot bank in one leap like it was nothing. I came out to investigate a noise armed with a Model 12 Winchester. I cornered the bear coming out of the shed when it jumped the bank and fled. If it chose to turn and come at me, even though I had a shotgun, I'm not sure I could have reacted in time to stop it. I never risked putting myself in a precarious position when dealing with bears again.

The idea of hunting with bait stations makes me uneasy. Give the bear a resource it will feel it has to defend, and right off you're in a situation. And isn't it essentially the same as feeding wildlife, if you don't happen to make the shot or aren't there when the bear is? Maybe I'm morally confused. If it's right to hunt, especially for consumption, maybe it doesn't matter how. Using lights at night to get deer is illegal most places, but is it wrong?

The chef when asked about this through a translator said that he was appalled that the U.S. tolerates chicken that can't be eaten raw. Apparently I am also morally confused. Especially for someone that grew up on a healthy sprinkeling of kudu and warthog . Using a bait station should not be called hunting. It is harvesting. Bear has no chance as long as you can shoot.

He's tortured by the look in the bears eyes, but not by the fact that murdered how many bears? Okay, buddy. Poor old man bear. May the hunters end of life be just as tragic.

I don't feel sorry for anyone who gets hurt or even killed while hunting. Animals have the right to defend themselves. We would defend ourselves if someone was trying to kill us. What comes around goes around. Thumbs up for the bear for defending itself.

I'm not with you there--hunting these days is not catch as catch can. Permits are issued based on population surveys and we balance the prey and predators to promote healthy animals. Purely recreational hunting, such as jaunts to Kenya, are highly profitable for organizations and governments and help them prevent poaching that can lead to extinctions. Not my favorite thing but it's smarter than ignoring the problem! Subsistence hunters need what they are hunting to make their livelihoods. I'm still not going to support trapping because it is cruel. I think I'll decide I am against bait station hunting.
The solution to problems with hunting is not to see hunters get hurt or killed. It's going to happen, of course. If we could manage animal populations with lasers from space, totally eliminating risk and suffering, and somehow use every bit of the animals culled with no waste, I don't know how I'd feel about it. How would you feel about it? How would that be more moral than on-foot hunting with bow or gun?
