At about 9 PM, shooting light was fading and the men were considering calling it a day when a big black bear ambled out of the bushes near the bait. They watched carefully, reading the bear’s body language to glean any information about it that they could pull. Before consuming any bait at the station, the black bear turned toward the men and stared in their direction. It pinned its ears back and chuffed, letting them know it knew they were there, and wasn’t happy about it.
Jon and Marvin knew they didn’t have a lot of time to waste if they were going to get this big fella. Jon drew a bead on the bear's vitals and let one rip from his hunting rifle. His aim was true, as the bear collapsed and tumbled down the hill 25 yards or so.
Marvin knew pursuing this bear in the dark was a no-go. He quickly strode to within 20 yards of where the bear lay and fired two shots with his pistol into its head. He had hoped to end any suffering the bear was enduring, but the bear was planning on inflicting a little suffering of its own.
Turning to his uncle after firing the two shots, Marvin was briefly distracted from the bear. He may have been thinking of how to get its carcass out before it was too dark, either way, when he glanced back that big ole black bear was already halfway to him. A brief panic overtook Jon with what he saw. He mistakenly ejected the clip from the rifle and scrambled to pick it up.
In a motion so practiced and perfect, the black bear swiped Marvin’s legs out from under him with one paw as it bit into his left arm at the same time. Scrambling for his sidearm, Marvin screamed, “he’s got me! He’s got me!”.
Hearing his nephew screaming for help, Jon tried to step down the hill but somehow tripped. Falling onto his face, he could do nothing to stop the bear from savaging Marvin.
In the time it took Marvin to do a full clip dump of 15 shots from his pistol, the black bear had tattered his left arm, and bitten several holes into his hip and lower back regions before collapsing.
Jon looked down at Marvin’s arm It looked more like a mass of bloody hamburger than a human arm. Marvin wasn’t considering waiting for help. He hopped onto his quad and drove to the home of a volunteer firefighter friend of his. The man notified authorities of Marvin’s bear attack and a medical helicopter was dispatched from Boise to a nearby spot to pick him up.
When you hunt a dangerous animal shit happens but bears seem to be on another level of DANGEREROUS!!!
When you walk into the woods, you're walking into the food chain. Be ready.
How in the hell do you drop a clip out of a rifle? And then fall on your face?Uncle John needs to stay out of the woods & in his taxi.
It was more likely a magazine, and not a clip. The shooter probably thought the bear was down after taking the two shots from his friend's handgun to finish it off, and he might have had his finger on the mag release about to take it out.
After reading some of the comments, many were upset that the guys used bait to get a bear. If it is allowed within the state with all the necessary tags that they have gotten, I do not have a problem I am a bear lover, I like those fury big predatory animals that can inflict pain to anyone of us in a heart beat. But Marvin did to feed his family for the year and many rather hunt for fresh meat than buy in the store the meat that has so many chemicals and has been sitting there for awhile. Marvin made mistakes that he will never forget and he will have dreams of that bear staring him down. Everything happens for a reason, but to wish him dead for killing the bear is wrong. You who made negative remarks do not realize what you say will have consequences in your life.
We wouldn't even be having these conversations 150 years ago. He was hunting for food, not committing mass slaughter. I suppose we're all supposed to go lockstep to the Piggly Wiggly and buy meat that someone else has killed.
If this ECONOMY gets any worse we all might be Hunting for our food
@@THEBEARDEDTOOLGUY there's so much pig meat in the west nobody should be going hungry
@@NewjerseyblowsAgreed. I see it as a problem of current food safety regulations and the need for slaughterhouses to remain profitable.
Say you are a poor hick without saying your a poor hick
Have you ever eaten bear meat? He was trophy hunting.
Here comes all the comments claiming how wrong it is to use bait. At the end of the day, as stated in the video, the state has a very high bear population with relatively low harvest numbers each year. Marvin and his family utilize the bear meat for their food. Sometimes it is that simple. Yet, many would criticize his actions as morally wrong, unfair to the bear, etc. while eating a burger from a cow raised in a fenced area for slaughter.
If the whole goal is to 'cull the herd' then baiting is fine. Just don't call it 'hunting'.
Worse yet, they will sit there and enjoy veal while complaining about baiting bears!
Yes, I'm guilty. I've had veal. But haven't since I realized how it is raised.
People in remote areas do what they need to do to feed their families!
@@994pt4
Animals bait other animals to hunt them. Baiting is apart of hunting.
( silly question, I've read the comments,)
@@gingersnapjudy If we want to keep drinking milk, we have to do something with bull calves. It doesn't seem practical to make them all steers and feed them up for beef.
Bear: i’d stay away from the fleshy bipedal primates, they always have those tree branches that shoot rocks!
" STICK THAT SPEAKS" ....( I remember that from TONTO )
Yes Addicus this would be my worst nightmare! Can’t believe this big ole bear got back up after being shot in the vitals and then in the head twice! But this bear wasn’t giving up without a fight 😊 thanks for another awesome cover. 👍🤗
He should also keep the Beartooth as a souvenir and he can tell the story about it
That big old Black Bear was even more resilient than even some Grizzly bears after being shot with a rifle and handgun. I wonder what type of ammunition was used and what caliber handgun was used? Glad to see that the hunters, Mr. Marvin Jennings survived along with his uncle.
This is another example of how a firearm is not necessarily going to save you from a bear attack as many think. This was a controlled situation where they had every advantage over the bear and still got attacked. Now think about trying to stop a charging bear while under pressure.
@@fredcarani6764
Firerams have been proven over time, in multiable bear attack situations to be the most effective personal safety defense devices available for stopping bear attacks. Such did eventually happen in this particular case, the bear was indeed stopped and killed. In many such situations the defenders are not injured. The critical key factors in order to be quickly effective in close proximity reactionary bear attacks is timing, shot placement, caliber and choosing the correct type of bullet and powder etc.
I think the PTSD of these attacks isn't fully appreciated by the layman. Thanks for investigating and informing us on these attacks. It's helpful!
I have PTSD from listening to them lol.
Bears are totally unpredictable. Go out there in their environment, be prepared to face them and deal with the consequences.
Bears are one of the reasons there was no overpopulation before we developed guns. They also caused us to evolve into pack animals. Google Short Faced bear and imagine running into that without a sizable group of buddies with bows and spears.
I would like to believe I wouldn't have shot the bear with him knowing I was there. And right at dark? I'm sure he felt pressured having planned over a year and his father in laws first hunt.
Would be interested to know what caliber pistol he used and type of ammunition . Would have been preferable to have used rifle for follow up shots- and from a safer distance
Bear was playing possum, played like he was dead for a minute but when he saw an opening..it was on! Bears are cagey, they plan things.. Great story SBA but wow..30,000 permits to hunt bear there..yeah the bears are going to have be cagey..
Im back Addicus!! Wow stunning scenery you live a couple hills from there? Terrifying!! 😱 Holy quacamole that 🐻 was massive and wasnt giving up!! Sounds to me like these Bumbling men, need to stick with deer for food. They both made mistakes, and remember sometimes the Hunter becomes the hunted.
Uncle John wasn't much help
Occasionally, hunters find their favorite outdoor activity “consuming”. Marvin was lucky.
A clip is for paper. Firearms use a magazine.😊
What kind of side arm did he shoot the bear with??
NEVER underestimate the endurance of an injured bear. They are on another level of power. From 30' away I once saw a 500lb bear, who had broken into my shed, jump an eight foot bank in one leap like it was nothing. I came out to investigate a noise armed with a Model 12 Winchester. I cornered the bear coming out of the shed when it jumped the bank and fled. If it chose to turn and come at me, even though I had a shotgun, I'm not sure I could have reacted in time to stop it. I never risked putting myself in a precarious position when dealing with bears again.
WHY ARE PEOPLE ALLOWED TO USE A BAIT STATION??? THAT DOESN'T SEEM FAIR AND RIGHT AWAY THE BEAR HAD 2 STRIKES AGAINST IT. THE GUYS HAD WEAPONS AND THE BAIT STATION. THEY NEED TO FIGHT FAIR, OR AT LEAST MORE FAIR.
BAIT STATIONS SHOULD BE ILLEGAL!!!
NONESENSE, ANIMALS INCLUDING BEARS USE "BAIT STATIONS" OF OTHER ANIMALS TO HUNT OTHER ANIMALS.
Funny thumbnail. Guy has 4 fingers wrapped under the trigger guard. He is not prepared for bear country
His fingers are Not wrapped around the trigger guard. They are wrapped around the grip.
Just saying 😊
@@Mike-zw7fq you didn’t read clearly.
Not with a handgun he isn't. But I'm sure the internet geniuses will all chime in about their 10mm's and 44's...lmmfao.
"Scotty" - it was a thought, not from me. Though I dud ask "what cal.?"
I didn't realize you literally live on the "front line" when it comes to scary bear attacks!
I think you should do a 5 or 10 minute video on, well, you, and brought you to that area, how long you've lived there, what your background is, what motivated you to start this channel (thank you by the way, I always enjoy the content ... and the odd nightmare of being chased around my backyard by an angry Grizzly sow). I think it would be really interesting to know a little about you, your motivation, and, given all the other animals in your area, why bears! Thanks!
If I’m right, the chuff sound is frequently followed by action, so no point in waiting for an introduction. He survived, got himself a rug and a bunch of sausages, which I assume he knows to cook well done.
I live in Boise and am a frequent backcountry outdoorsman. I always carry my 10mm w/ Buffalo Bore hard cast, extra mag, and fixed blade. I know at any time sh*t can occur. Better be prepared than not. Also had been heli rescued from a truck accident years ago. Age brings knowledge. Keep getting outside! Cheers
Thanks buddy…
My clip was accidently ejected....cant make this sh** up folks!
If a guy had a rifle, why not a follow up shot vs a h^ndgun?
If he wanted something "bigger", why not a the front-end?
Better to be researched than "cool" and "imagination" confident.
Black bears will go where the easy food to score is, people or not, once they find food they'll return every two to three days. Bears are known to travel about 50 miles a day, they make a round trip over and over. Good thing they had their Quad, getting help was imperative, Marvin is lucky he is alive. I'm all about hunting for food, at least he made use of the meat, head and fur.
MANDATORY DONATION!!-> 33$ -> ** MANBLA°**( MAN & BEAR LOVE ASSOCIATION❤)
Heya Scary, am i mistaken, but didnt the pioneers used to eat BRUINS?
I don't believe in bear baiting. And I believe that it's ok to hunt, but to do it ethically. Most people don't eat bear meat, so I suspect that he was doing it for the furs. Just my opinion.
He went looking for the BEAR AN FOUND IT 😮😂
His friend was pretty worthless
Not sure why he kept the head and hide if he's getting nightmares (PTSD). He might wake up one night and the bear rug is standing by his bedside 😮😮
Well no wonder! He was shooting in the wrong direction. Look at the thumbnail.
Nature lovers would rather you die than a bear even you use it for food especially vegetarian
I am not against hunting, but I am not against self defence either. The bear had a right to fight back. Don't engage in activities that you don't want to assume the consequences of.
Silliest comment I have ever read.
I think that is good advice even other than bear attacks just real life. I gave the comment a like. Like in roadhouse(Swayze) opinions vary
Agree, if you hunt, you might become the hunted.
You’re a human not a bear. Get over yourself
U say that so self righteously while u got to the supermarket and eat your bacon, beef and fish. That u didn’t have to go through the troubles or dangers to get. 🤷🏾♂️🤦🏽♂️
Yes,yes, yes, not that way but I have seen those eyes before.I mentioned it in another video.
Did I understand that right at the first part of the story, is the content creator from Idaho?
I don’t want to encounter a bear anywhere, anytime.
If you can't shoot or manage your weapons stay out of the woods.
The idea of hunting with bait stations makes me uneasy. Give the bear a resource it will feel it has to defend, and right off you're in a situation. And isn't it essentially the same as feeding wildlife, if you don't happen to make the shot or aren't there when the bear is? Maybe I'm morally confused. If it's right to hunt, especially for consumption, maybe it doesn't matter how. Using lights at night to get deer is illegal most places, but is it wrong?
Amazing elasticity to your logic! Your reasoning is all over the place. I bet you would be entertaining in a math class.
@@henryrodgers1752 Straight As through Calc III. Couldn't get more into my schedule.
Possibly I was entertaining as well. But I'm old now so I'm no longer certain about my values. When you're young you are sure of yourself...for awhile. Now I try to correct my thinking as much as I can. I can be, and often am, wrong. You say I'm wrong. Great! Explain, please.
We have a very few human beings who are privileged to use remaining wilderness as they please. Hunting is important to managing the wilderness, but there are ethical concerns. I don't like trapping. I think I don't like bait stations.
Rather than give me your take on it you decide to go ad hominem. What do you think about bait stations? Can you articulate some reason I should change my mind?
Bear jacked him up!
Bear play dead and then say...'let's try again without the gun!"
In this case, I like the under bear
It makes me sad because the bear was old and probably couldn’t eat so it was starving. It probably wouldn’t have even went near the bait if it were a younger bear. You know the bear probably smelled the men but was desperate. The bear had every right to defend himself. That’s the chance you take when hunting bears.

I'm surprised I hadn't heard of this one before. My niece lives just above Grimes Creek, off of Clear Creek.
Ouch!
Bait? Bait? That doesn't sound like a "hunt" to me. It sounds more like a trap. For shame.
Who are you trying to Shame hunters Hypocrite?
Hunting is about providing food. The government has taken away our rights to subsistence hunting and turned it into a for profit business for themselves. You may have heard what was said. About 90 percent of the hunters are not successful but payed for the license.
Let's see how you feel when the government turns your job into a game of chance. Oh wait a minute! You work for the government don't you?
yep...even 'King of the Hill' had an episode about baiting deer.
If you're gonna hunt...then hunt. Leave the bait and dogs at home!
“Fair Chase” is an alien concept for many state game commissions which set the rules for hunts. Private land hunts, like in Texas, are even worse. Hunting ethics is a most conditional term.

Baiting bear is a lawful way to hunt in Idaho. It's a lot of work to keep up with baiting bear
Douglas fir isn't a true fir.
I love bears, they are delicious! From Boise, some of the best steak I've eaten is Bear tenderloin with a thick grilled char on it!
I bet that ended their bear hunting career. It's amazing how smart bears are, to realize it was a trap and then ambush them.
That bear wanted to make a lasting impression before going out...he sure did!
Lol yup !!!!
I thought bears were full of parasites.
That is dealt with by safe butchering practices and proper cooking. There's no much a human can catch from cow meat so we can eat that rare. I saw a food travel video about an iconic restaurant in Japan that prepares an entire chicken a dozen different ways as a tasting menu. Some of it is served RAW. The chef when asked about this through a translator said that he was appalled that the U.S. tolerates chicken that can't be eaten raw. He said he knows if he buys chickens in Japan they aren't carrying salmonella or e. coli. It's an interesting point.
Waiting for your video . I know it's going to be great. 😮
It’s not a clip, it’s a magazine.

Good video
Apparently I am also morally confused. Especially for someone that grew up on a healthy sprinkeling of kudu and warthog . Using a bait station should not be called hunting. It is harvesting. Bear has no chance as long as you can shoot.
Says the person who has never hunted bears.
He's tortured by the look in the bears eyes, but not by the fact that murdered how many bears? Okay, buddy. Poor old man bear. May the hunters end of life be just as tragic.

STOP CAUSING THESE ANIMALS TO BE PUT DOWN!!!!!!! LEAVE THEM ALONE!
Lol don't feel sorry for him
I don't feel sorry for anyone who gets hurt or even killed while hunting. Animals have the right to defend themselves. We would defend ourselves if someone was trying to kill us. What comes around goes around. Thumbs up for the bear for defending itself.
I'm not with you there--hunting these days is not catch as catch can. Permits are issued based on population surveys and we balance the prey and predators to promote healthy animals. Purely recreational hunting, such as jaunts to Kenya, are highly profitable for organizations and governments and help them prevent poaching that can lead to extinctions. Not my favorite thing but it's smarter than ignoring the problem! Subsistence hunters need what they are hunting to make their livelihoods. I'm still not going to support trapping because it is cruel. I think I'll decide I am against bait station hunting.
The solution to problems with hunting is not to see hunters get hurt or killed. It's going to happen, of course. If we could manage animal populations with lasers from space, totally eliminating risk and suffering, and somehow use every bit of the animals culled with no waste, I don't know how I'd feel about it. How would you feel about it? How would that be more moral than on-foot hunting with bow or gun?
