When my uncle lived in Alaska, he told us about the hand cannon he took fishing with him. I asked, why the hell do you need a firearm to fish? You're not shooting the fish. He said, sometimes, the bears want the same fish. Let them pick their spots, go down river and enjoy. If a bear wants your fish, let it. If a bear wants you, make sure you have a big enough caliber in your firearm. Me, being from Virginia, never thought of that. Sound advice though. Fun fact I learned recently, bears are one of the only land animals aside from humans to walk with a plantrigrade stance. That is, with the entire foot on the ground. Most animals walk with a digitigrade stance, on their toes (think birds, dogs, rodents, anything that looks like it has backwards knees, that's actually the ankle) or with a tardigrade stance, on the very tips on their digits (horses, deer, goats, anything with a hoof, which is actually a toenail modified for walking on) Bears are also canids, so some of their closest taxonomic relatives are dogs and wolves.

I only ever had one encounter with a couple bears when camping with my dad at a state park in California, I was about 5-6 years old at the time. It was late afternoon and they wandered into our camp looking for food. My dad picked me up and we got inside the car, with my dad ready to drive off if the bears approached. They were there for about 10 minutes and decided to leave when they realized there weren’t any available snacks easily accessible. They didn’t pay us much attention. I was mildly nervous, but not excessively worried or alarmed.
Very polite bear. You said you have experience with this particular bear so he probably didn't consider you a threat because nothing has happened to him before when encountering you.
Charging is more of a defensive behavior. This one stopped chasing the salmon, looked at the people, began scent profiling the wind coming from them and then made a precarious small step toward them to center his body to them so that he could chase if we wanted to. The read was correct by the guide and the verbal command was obviously a useful cue to stop the curious probing this bear was beginning to display.
@@MountainStreamLives while, yes, the guide was correct in being defensive, this bear 100% had no interest in anything to do with the people. You see the red salmon in the water mid video. The bear sees them too and follows them as the salmon went downstream. However, the people are too close for the bears desire. When the bear follows the salmon but gets too close to the people , it stops. The bear was guaging whether to follow the salmon while being uncomfortably close to people, or to ditch the salmon while prioritizing it's own comfort & safety. There was definitely no aggressive intent by the bear
@@PackerManForLifeThe bear was obviously interested in these folks as he came up right near then sniffed at the air, seeking a cue. Like the OP says: he was assessing the situation.

They run so fast without making noise. At least the one in Alasks I encountered. I had no bear spray, but had a gun, it wasn't a magnum and instead of being on my person it was under my towels at the tree because I was about to floor on my floaters. My dog was on the bank and I started clapping my hands and calling her in the water with me. The grizzly stood up on its hinds turned around and ran away so fast without making it a sound. I was shaking as much as my pit bull. That was the day I realized my gun was inadequate especially if it wasn't on my person, and that my dog couldn't kill a grizzly by herself, that the bear could literally know my head off and send it rolling on the ground with one swipe of their paw, tgey have HUGE paws, the size of your head, how fast they can run and how silent they can be. I also, got a good dose of how mortal I truly am, and how much you should always respect the wild outdoors and the animals in it. Because all y9u are is a hink of meat.
“Well I can say I’m a bit skeptical after using bear spray on the job one day!” A man jacked up on maybe flakka or some other drug just kept coming even with my bear grade spray straight to the eyes for a prolonged duration. We absolutely agree on Timothy Treadwell, lol. I get the gun readiness; 6 of my kids are military members and another one one is a police officer. But a grizzly’s movements that close are still unpredictable, and they can be pretty darn quick as well. Lots of people think they have a situation under control until they don’t. I’m not underestimating your attack prowess. I’m just not underestimating the grizzly’s either.
Yeah after a while of being around them you learn what they are like and they are really pretty predictable. A lot more so than say a traffic stop. Cops are in way more danger on a daily basis than I ever was around these bears. That said I've had bluff charges and such and it's nerve wracking at times especially if you got 20 bears within a 100 yards of you. Staying on your toes and treating them like wild animals is vital to staying alive out there. Stay safe. Best wishes for you and your children.
@@CalebJacquesOr bc he fu%ked around with bears instead of just letting them live. You go into their home territory and they maul one of your customers or you and then the park service tracks him down and kills him bc you're an idiot. If you need to bring a gun where you're going that's a red flag that you shouldn't go there. I'm a legal gun owner and I have it to protect my family incase someone breaks into my house. However, if I took a gun and broke into someone else's house with a gun on me I'd go to jail bc I'm wrong. Just like this. Stay away from the bear and you both get to live.
@@ForrestMccroy It's not. Several folks have been killed by bears while spraying the bear point blank right in the face. It keeps curious animals honest which is the vast majority of cases. It doesn't do a damn thing against a bear that's desperate to kill you because it hasn't eaten in weeks or extremely aggressive because you got too close to its cubs or startled the hell out of it and its now in fight mode. There have also been studies that some bears can build up a tolerance to it if they've been engaged with it several times. Much like pepper spray with humans. It's really effective when the person isn't committed and it's their first time. There're also some people where it has little effect at all. You see the same with dog spray. It also has a ridiculously short effective range. That means if the spray fails, you're now way too close to a very pissed off animal to engage with a firearm without taking some damage. This guy boasts about his 44mag that he carries not realizing that if the spray fails, he isn't getting that revolver out of its holster without getting mauled in the process. Most bear sprays have an effective range of around 10 ft. A bear can cover that distance in well under a second. That revolver isn't even going to clear leather before the bear gets to him. This is compounded by the fact that most bear sprays are deployed using two hands so it's difficult to have your revolver in one hand and the spray in the other.
I've heard salmon bears are pretty peaceful as far as grizzlies go. Way easier to monch on some salmon than to try and deal with a human. The interior grizzlies are often smaller but far more ferocious when it comes to hunting.
Bears are only afraid of other bears. They are top of the food chain, outcompeting both wolves and mountain lions. The only reason they would be afraid of humans is if they have been bear-sprayed before, in which case the will detect the scent of humans and keep their distance, usually. But like 99% of bears have not encountered bear spray and most aggressive human/bear encounters result in the shooting of bear, rather than in the spraying of the bear. Which is dumb because shooting a bear is less effective at stopping an attack than macing it, because a bear will take multiple shots and still take minutes to bleed out, whilst being thoroughly pissed off in the mean time. Whereas spray means its not fighting for its life, it just hates it and leaves, due to their sensitive noses.

People focus too much on the predator aspect. Obviously the idea of being eaten is a tad disconcerting. But the most dangerous big animals are herbivores. Even in Africa. Grizzlies eat a lot more plant food than meat, and almost all attacks are the intolerant / defensive attacks that are characteristic of big herbivores. Their predatory attacks are extremely rare.

Be prepared for whatever you may encounter in your environment and enjoy what nature has to offer. After going to Alaska myself about a month ago, I see why people love it so much. Fun fact I learned recently, bears are one of the only land animals aside from humans to walk with a plantrigrade stance. That is, with the entire foot on the ground. Most animals walk with a digitigrade stance, on their toes (think birds, dogs, rodents, anything that looks like it has backwards knees, that's actually the ankle) or with a tardigrade stance, on the very tips on their digits (horses, deer, goats, anything with a hoof, which is actually a toenail modified for walking on)
Bears are also canids, so some of their closest taxonomic relatives are dogs and wolves.

His ears were forward and in a relaxed position. He was troting not charging.
This is 100% false
