Yay! I’m so glad to find someone who encourage us to decorate with things that we love and not just twigs, balls, etc, aka the dust catchers 😂. Please give us more ideas like these and thanks!

A lot of sense in your views. Totally agree! I live in Europe and it's a joy to shop at thrift stores.. I find marble, art, ceramics, antiques.. and my home still has MY personality... Fake books are beyond my comprehension. Thanks for your advice.

Can you imagine if all people took your advice, how boring decor would be. People do your own thing. And if you like scents, and I do, well then buy them and use them. They have been around for centuries. My advice of course. Be yourself and live by your standards only.

Wow. New viewer here, and I'm a senior, so I've been watching home decor styles and trends come and go since the 1970s when I became old enough for my own home. I agree with every point you've made! I do buy some new "coffee table" books, but not to use as decor, rather for the content or because I admire the author. I always buy books for the content no matter the subject, but sometimes I can't wait for a book to become old before I want to read, or peruse, it. I do buy mostly used books on eBay or Amazon though. And yes, they become part of my decor, but that's not the point of them. It hurts my heart to see people selling books by the color, or ripping the covers off, or gluing them all together and painting them for decor. I really enjoyed what you said about art and photos. I believe our homes should tell our story. They should be a reflection of what we love, what we've created, and who we are, and the people we love and admire, etc., not just what is trendy in home decor at retail stores at the moment, which changes with every season. I love it when people who have been to my house later see things somewhere else and then tell me, Oh I saw something (whatever) and it made me think of you. Not because of the style, but because it speaks about me. Or when they come in and recognize a piece because it's been in my home forever, no matter how many times I've rearranged or moved. ...I do understand young people just starting have to start somewhere to fill their spaces, but I loved your advice! It would save young people a lot of time and money to benefit from it. I will be watching more. Thank you!!

I did have sticks in a vase for awhile but it was because I planted a small tree, raised it to a big curly willow tree until it died and then saved some of the curly branches. They brought joy.

Thank you for your video! I particularly enjoy how you encourage people to use what they have and be themselves instead of following trends! I would like to suggest a video on the use of bright, upbeat colors on sofas, chairs, pillows, walls, bedding, etc… Not really enjoying beige layered with off white, tan, sprinkled with textured off white items for added interest. Just need some guidance please! ❤

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Many of the things that irritate you also bother me, so it’s good to see I’m not alone. I purchased a fashion and decorating book not long ago, but ended up thrifting one recently I really like. One of the libraries nearby is having a book sale this weekend and I’m planning to try my luck. I read a lot and have given away tons of books throughout the years. It’s too bad I didn’t keep the pretty ones to use as decor. That’s ok. I’m sure I’ll find new ones.

I thought you were spot on with most of your observations and alternatives. I am a Baby Boomer, live in a mid century modern home. However, I dont live in a house that looks like the Jetsons. Mid century diversity has really been ruined, badly copied and misunderstood. I would like to hear your views on this. I grew up in a midcentury home, mom was a great decorator. We didnt live with stick furniture, everything orange, or one sq inch of shag carpeting. Thanks again.❤️

Excellent advice - I cannot stand any of these things that you have mentioned - add to that lots of pillow on the bed that have to be "chopped" with your hand to make them into some sort of V shape. Why do people do that?? It actually drives me nuts when someone does it on a video -and they all copy each other, so there are thousands of women all over with this pillows that they whack in the middle !!🤨! Love your decor sense!!

Thank you for sharing your personal style. When I display something it is in a way that creates the interest. Example… I have a large wooden chain hanging from one of three Scandinavian hooks. I get so many good comments. My style is to think outside the box using items that I like or are sentimental. I always encourage individuals to share and display the thing’s they love.

Totally agree about scented candles. Do not waste money on Jo Malone or Diptyque or any of the "high end" candle brands. You are literally burning money when you use those! IKEA makes nice pillar candles that are unscented and affordable.

I am a big fan❤! Thanks so much for your good advice - it makes me want to look critically at my space and be more intentional. Full disclosure, I love a scented candle, but recently walked down a hallway in a condo and was assaulted by someone’s scented candle, it can be TOO overpowering at times. I am looking for advice on the “working” home office. I mean, a room in which a person spends a good part of their day doing the books, paying bills, basically keeping the administrative side of the business running. It has been a struggle over the years and I have made some changes, but there is still room for improvement. Keep up the great videos❤

I’m trying a candle warmer will see how it goes…So much of “decor” is pointless and is just filler. I just try to get what I really like cuz things will go out so quickly. Also everyone is saying go to thrift stores secondhand stores consignment stores and those prices have gotten really expensive. So I see why ppl end up buying new. But def appreciate the individuality and creativity cuz that’s what makes your home yours imo!

Hi Alexandria, just discovered your channel today. We are moving to a new home and one question I have is how to handle a home that is all gray and white? We own a chocolate brown classic couch and loveseat and we have some wood furniture, and the hardscaping in this home (kitchen tiles, countertops, stone around fireplace) is all gray. I want to find ways to warm up and layer neutrals, but blending gray (cool tones) and warm earth tones can be a challenge. Can you help?

Hey this was a great video, I was nodding along with pretty much all your points!
Would you consider doing some kind of video on start-to-finish styling of a bookshelf with *lots of actual functional books to read* on it? So much of the “how to style a bookshelf” content out there winds up showing bookcases with a bunch of accessories and like 3 books on them (accented by the dreaded setting of beads of course) and uh…that ain’t helpful to me!

I could use some advice about what (if anything) to put on a plate rail that surrounds our family room. It’s held cranberry colored transferware plates and platters for over 40 years! While l still love the dishes- lm ready for a visual change. My walls are Cloud White (Kelly Moore) and are staying that way! Two bookcases - they stay too! Deep brown furniture- used brick fireplace- burgundy leather chairs- Brazilian cherry floors. Also 2 Lazyboy recliners in lightest grey taupe. Two gorgeous mirrors. Any ideas??

People can decorate their homes however THEY choose. Every six months or so, there's some new tacky "home decorating trend" we're supposed to follow. Decorate your space how you choose and quit telling others what they should get rid of, in their own home decor. Its silly.
