A lot of people talk about her voice and playing, but damn, her arrangements and orchestration are absolutely brilliant, too. She's like roots Maurice Ravel.
Edgar would be so proud.... to be 16 yrs old and write this song with a girlfriend in English class... I wish my high school years were this for filling
Edgar Allan Poe was the first poet I ever began to study. This poem was one of my all time favourites. To hear it put to song just sends me back to my days as a young poet and I am her again. Thank you!!!!
The way she was able to shorten the poem and update the words - from "high-born kinsmen" to "wicked brothers" (sure, it was for the flow of the song) is just so cool. And the song loses nothing from the exemption of the stanzas she cut. It's beautiful and this is my favorite version of the song. The combining of a Nashville artist with Irish and Scottish musicians. This sound is just gorgeous and really fits the feel of the song, I think.
Unfortunately the only problem with that stanza is - not everyone goes to Jesus. Those who reject Him as God will be in torment which is what they choose.
A Visitor from the Past by Thelen Paulk I had a dream the other night, I did not understand A figure walking through the mist, with flintlock in his hand His clothes were torn and dirty; As he stood their by my bed, he took off his three cornered hat And speaking low, he said, "We fought a revolution to secure our Liberty We wrote the Constitution, as a shield from tyranny For future generations this legacy we gave In this, the land of the free and the home of the brave The freedom we secured for you, we hoped you'd always keep But tyrants labored endlessly, while your parents were asleep Your freedom gone - Your courage lost You're no more than a slave In this, the land of the free and the home of the brave You buy a permit to travel, and a permit to own a gun Permits to start a business or to build a place for one On land that you believe you own, you pay a yearly rent Although you have no voice in choosing, how the money's spent Your children must attend a school, that does not educate Your Christian values can't be taught, according to the State You read about the current news in a regulated press You pay a tax you do not owe, to please the IRS Your money is no longer made of silver or gold You trade your wealth for paper, so your life can be controlled You pay for crimes that make your nation turn from God in shame You've taken Satans number, as you traded in your name You've given government control to those who do you harm, so they can padlock churches, and steal the family farm And keep our country deep in debt, put men of God in jail, harass your fellow countrymen While corrupted courts prevail Your public servants don't uphold the solemn oath they swore Your daughters visit doctors, so their children won't be born Your leaders ship artillery and guns to foreign shores, and send your sons to slaughter, to fight other peoples wars Can you regain your freedom, for which we fought and died, or don't you have the courage or the faith to stand with pride Are there no more values for which you would fight to save, or do you wish your children, to live in fear and be a slave Sons of the Republic, arise and take a stand Defend the Constitution, the supreme law of the land Preserve our great Republic, and teach each God given right, and pray to God to keep the torch of freedom burning bright..."
She usually plays a 6-string bnajo, with a G for the fifth string that is tuned an octave below the third string G. So from bottom to top is a high G string for the thumb string, with the next five strings - G, D, G, B and D when tuned to standard banjo tuning - reaching to the nut.
I count 5 tuning pegs on the head-stock, plus one on the neck about 2/3 of the way along. I think I'm right in saying its a custom banjo, made for her by a friend.
Please give credit to all the players when you post a video.... I think it is Nollaig Casey on the fiddle, Donal Lunny playing Bouzouki, Danny Thompson on the double bass, Jerry Douglas on the dobro, Sam Bush on mandolin, and the drummer is? and the guitar? This was recorded at a lodge at Glen Lyon near Aberfeldy in Perthshire, Scotland.
One of the greatest young American singers alive today!
so happy she won 2 grammy's ..it's about time :)
You got that right!
Amen! I couldn't agree more. She has a voice like an angel. What incredible talent.
The way she sings "kingdom by the sea" gives me goosebumps.

Love when these haunting melodies are played in a backdrop of old weathered settings. Reminds one of the timeless nature of music.
A lot of people talk about her voice and playing, but damn, her arrangements and orchestration are absolutely brilliant, too. She's like roots Maurice Ravel.
Poe and Bluegrass! Beautiful combination. Lost my wife his past year.

Amazing beyond words! 😍
How excellent !!!
"We can not have all things to please us
No matter how we try
Until we've all gone to Jesus
We can only wonder why..."
Unfortunately the only problem with that stanza is - not everyone goes to Jesus. Those who reject Him as God will be in torment which is what they choose.
Beautiful!

Where is this magical place, where miracles happen?

A Visitor from the Past
by Thelen Paulk
I had a dream the other night,
I did not understand
A figure walking through the mist,
with flintlock in his hand
His clothes were torn and dirty;
As he stood their by my bed,
he took off his three cornered hat
And speaking low, he said,
"We fought a revolution
to secure our Liberty
We wrote the Constitution,
as a shield from tyranny
For future generations
this legacy we gave
In this, the land of the free
and the home of the brave
The freedom we secured for you,
we hoped you'd always keep
But tyrants labored endlessly,
while your parents were asleep
Your freedom gone - Your courage lost
You're no more than a slave
In this, the land of the free
and the home of the brave
You buy a permit to travel,
and a permit to own a gun
Permits to start a business
or to build a place for one
On land that you believe you own,
you pay a yearly rent
Although you have no voice in choosing,
how the money's spent
Your children must attend a school,
that does not educate
Your Christian values can't be taught,
according to the State
You read about the current news
in a regulated press
You pay a tax you do not owe,
to please the IRS
Your money is no longer made
of silver or gold
You trade your wealth for paper,
so your life can be controlled
You pay for crimes
that make your nation turn
from God in shame
You've taken Satans number,
as you traded in your name
You've given government control
to those who do you harm,
so they can padlock churches,
and steal the family farm
And keep our country deep in debt,
put men of God in jail,
harass your fellow countrymen
While corrupted courts prevail
Your public servants
don't uphold the solemn oath they swore
Your daughters visit doctors,
so their children won't be born
Your leaders ship artillery
and guns to foreign shores,
and send your sons to slaughter,
to fight other peoples wars
Can you regain your freedom,
for which we fought and died,
or don't you have the courage
or the faith to stand with pride
Are there no more values
for which you would fight to save,
or do you wish your children,
to live in fear and be a slave
Sons of the Republic,
arise and take a stand
Defend the Constitution,
the supreme law of the land
Preserve our great Republic,
and teach each God given right,
and pray to God to keep the torch
of freedom burning bright..."
Take a close look at Sarah Jarosz's banjo.
It has SIX strings!
She usually plays a 6-string bnajo, with a G for the fifth string that is tuned an octave below the third string G. So from bottom to top is a high G string for the thumb string, with the next five strings - G, D, G, B and D when tuned to standard banjo tuning - reaching to the nut.
I just see 5 tuning knobs on her banjo. A'm I missing something?
I count 5 tuning pegs on the head-stock, plus one on the neck about 2/3 of the way along. I think I'm right in saying its a custom banjo, made for her by a friend.
You are right Tom. I had my glasses on and missed the up neck peg lol.

😉
Nice, but nobody can compete with Joan !!!!
Hiyus
Had no idea Harvey Keitel could play the mandolin
Has Anabelle Lee always been sung? I first heard it by Stevie Nicks.
No, it was originally a poem by Edgar Allan Poe.
Epic music, great musicians, i dont understand how can someone listen to crap like Nicki Minaj.
Guess I'm the only one that didn't like it. They took a profoundly sorrowful poem and made it a jolly ditty. All emotion was lost.
