    I'm a 3rd generation Irish-Canadian who played the pipes since the age of 5 and grew up falling in love with Bob Dylan's music. As this has always been my favourite song of his, this version checked off all the boxes for me. So pure and soulful..... it really got to me. Sláinte!

    I married a beautiful lass from Cape Breton. All of her family were fluent Gaelic speakers. Now I'm an old man, my wife is gone. Ms MacInnes' singing brings to memory all those ceilidhs with family and friends that were part of our lives. Heartfelt thanks, my dear.

    Whoever mixed this is a f&%#@ing master. I would say that there's too many musicians playing but the guy mixing managed to deal with it. Awesome song and although Bob Dylan wrote it, Sarah covered it the way Eva Cassidy covered songs: after she played them, she owned them. Some people can write great songs but sometimes other people can interpret them magically. Sarah is one of the best talents of our time. Alison Krauss is also.

    • @kirkMason82

      I was thinking the same thing regarding mixing. Incredible.

    • @thorsluter7835
      @thorsluter7835 6 лет назад +4

      I really like Sarah's interpretation of this song, but I disagree that she owns it. Both have merits of their own, Dylan's gravelly voice gives weight to the song, while Sarah's sweet vocals bring light. Both are incredible in their own way, and I would happily listen to either version and feel equally enriched.

    • @garad123456
      @garad123456 5 лет назад +3

      @@thorsluter7835 That's true, Bob's voice is not a beautiful singing voice but none of the covers I have heard from any of his songs carry the same weight in the expression. But it's nice to listen to some younger voices or female voices etc in the same great songs for a change.

    • @JamDaddyJoe
      @JamDaddyJoe 5 лет назад

      Somewhat maybe, however disagree, Dylan still owns it & in some part this too. Considering, had he never wrote it, this never happens! That's why there's an original, and why this is a cover. Also considering all the songs he wrote, or anyone like caliber writers, Duke Ellington, Willie Nelson, Marvin Gaye, Bruce Springsteen, Joni Mitchel, Stevie Wonder, Patsy Cline, Paul McCartney, Johnny Cash, James Brown, Neil Young, Chrissie Hynde, John Lennon, Aritha Franklin, Robert Johnson, Stevie Nicks, Muddy Waters, Loretta Lynn, John Coltrane, Carol King or any others in the long lists. All have a vast amount of ordinary songs as deemed by listeners, critics & commercialism or even artists themselves, in as much greater volume in song numbers per body of work. The intention in music is not to take away from the original, but add something to it, while emphasizing the not taking! Why copy rights are followed with covers & honor system among collaborative & co-ethical artists. When the cover greatly exceeds the original can make for a dilemma, best to credit both as equals, & really they are at best with such cases and those out of balance where people think the cover is actually the original.

      Yes, music, great literatures with moral values can uplift the souls. We need both physical food and spiritual food. On the other hand, literatures with dark energy of uncontrollable selfish desires, greed, violence and lust are degradation of the souls and are pursued by materialistic people and people with demonic nature.

    I enjoy this recording so much. It truly sounds as though it's no more complicated than calling up your best musical buddies and saying, come over and let's play... And yet every single player and singer is superb, individually and collectively. This is what folk/bluegrass music is SUPPOSED to be; thank you for sharing it with the rest of us!

    I was mystified by the chords Sarah was playing until I realized, oh, there are eight tuning pegs! That's a mandolin! And what a beautiful mandolin. A quick search led me to Northfield Manadolins, and the understanding that it is an Archtop Octave Mandolin.

    As an Antipodean, I am pleased to find the Weissenborn-style lap-played guitar I spotted and looked up is made by Cole & Clark, from Australia. I think through the common Scottish/Irish connection, we NZers have a substantial contingent of lovers of this kind of music. I must add that I wouldn't be making this comment if I wasn't looking for more by Sarah in the first place!

    • @andrewwhite2503
      @andrewwhite2503 7 лет назад +2

      I was also introduced to Cole Clark through this lap steel. They appear to make a range of guitars with different woods giving endless combinations. All wood is sourced from Australia in an ethical manner. I have watched a nmber of youtube demos of their guitars and they really seem to have cracked the problems associated with amplifying acoustic guitars. I doubt I will ever have enough money to buy one, but I can live in hope.

    Amazing tribute, pushing the envelope recreation, reformation of a classic & one of most covered artists. We commonly think when great artists, or any developmental level, do any cover, the goal is to not only represent the artist & work, but to gift something back to them/it/listener, creative, new, added, touching, connecting on an improving developmental process or art. No easy task, only few achieve considering how many covers are done. However, Sarah Jarosz already did this in earnest previously, & here again, her & this line up. Replace cello back with it & more presence keying vocals, & likely difficult to get any much better on this version! Seems there is some give & take from this compared to as trio version. Difficult to say which I favor as a result, but likely the 1st cause more pure, simple & soft to the theme plus same in perfect balance with her voice/vocalizations. Stellar job with both all around though!

    SarahJarosz and every musicians here are the collective enengy of this great poem/hymn and the extension of Bob Dylan great insightful lyric. Great music and meaningful poems/hymns are supposed to be sung and spread far and wide; let us all be part of the spiritual awakening journey for the spirit soul contrarary to the material body is eternal; without the driver no machines can move, so is without the soul the body cannot play, sing, laugh nor cry. The spirit soul (living force) is the symptom of life. 🪷❤
