Mary Lindsey ... THANKS so much!!! You really are too kind. ☺️ Sarah Jarosz spelled it that way, so I followed suit. The POE original is AWESOME as well, though!
I love this video, very much, because it's perfecty pictures the atmosphere and what makes this song/poem a true and immortal classic! I also think that the combination of Poe's genius and talent of Sara J. needed just a good depiction, so we have it fortunatly indeed, with yours video, Dave! My congratulations, greetings and God bless your imagination, David!
I heard this on wmnf bluegrass 😊 I have to check and see if you've done anymore songs. This is great! I love music and art and Edgar Allan Poe. I often think about how many songs could be illustrated ❤️
First, this is my absolute favorite song from Ms. Jarosz. It's macabre, it's got pep, and it's kind of like what I expect My Chemical Romance to sound like if they played bluegrass. Second, I really enjoyed your representation of the song. While not explicitly shown, I've always felt it serves as a metaphor for mental illness. The "winds blew from a story cloud that took my Annabelle Lee" make me think of someone so overcome with the black clouds of depression they take them away from their loved ones. "And her wicked brothers came to steal her away from me" reminds me that often depression comes with the 'brothers' of anxiety and suicidal thoughts. The possession scene where Annabelle seems compelled to throw herself off the cliff are an excellent metaphor. Perhaps not what the artist (you) originally intended be taken away from this masterpiece of a video, but I hope not something that is found in poor taste, either.
"Annabel Lee" and "The Raven" were both written by Mathew Franklin Whittier, younger brother of poet John Greenleaf Whittier, and falsely claimed in a sort of 19th-century identity theft by Edgar Allan Poe. My paper, "Evidence that Edgar Allan Poe Stole 'The Raven' from Mathew Franklin Whittier" explains. It is downloadable at the following link. It can also be found by searching on the title on Academia.edu. www.ial.goldthread.com/MFW_The_Raven.pdf
Wow wow wow. Have always thought this was genius of her to do this, but your video takes it to another level. Beautifully done, with a touch of Edward Gorey!
This is so beautiful!!! Can I use this animation in our lesson? I would have used the music but we have the lyrics in spoken poetry. I will give full credits to you. Thank you so much! I love your work!
Hi David, do you mind if I use your animation for a spoken version of this poem I have been working on. My channel is just a hobby of mine and is not for profit. I will give you credits i the video :)
@@davidjohnson6961 FYI, I discovered this video because I am working on a performance of early Israeli culture, and in my grandmother's notebooks I found a Hebrew translation of Anabelle Lee, written by someone who'd later be an important statesman, and which preserves the rhythm and cadence of the English. Then I started youtubing various Hebrew settings of it, which then had me stumble onto yours, which is amazing because I love Jarosz and because your animation is fantastic. Ahh, the internet.
@@RabbiT-qh8pd Right on, brother! I LOVE that story! What an amazing find to begin with -- the Hebrew translation with both rhyme and cadence! Then, I appreciate the kudos. Sarah Jarosz is the definition of pure talent in my eyes, too. I saw her speak at a songwriters performance / Q&A deal at the Old Settlers Music Fest last year in a room with probably under 50 people. I was so struck that her humility was as prodigious as her talent. Anyway... Thanks for the props and be well!
There a legend about the origin of this story Poe attended the cididale a military college in Charleston South Carolina he dropped about beocse he stared drinking and gambling we know this to be fact but there a legends that Poe meet and fell in love with a plantation owners her father finding out about the relationship not wanting his daughter to marry a working class Yankee sent her away from Charleston to the family plantain or to another city to break up the relationship were there was a small pox/ yellow fever out break she got sick died to out break never made to Charleston because mosquitos can’t lay egg in salt water Charleston had salt marshes on 3 sides and the ocean on the other so that why incredibly wealthy plantain owners would spend summers Charleston to avoid the yellow fever if you ever been to Charleston South Carolina it very much a kingdom by the sea and to see when cotton made it one of the wealthiest part of the country you can see at some inspiration
I just heard it so this song was a lot older band and so this girl is singing it but the husband actually sang it I think I just heard a man sing it a little so I guessed it was that
This was a big mistake considering the fact that the tempo and type of music used was in total opposition to the tempo and type of elements In the poem.

Many a year ago
In a kingdom by the sea
There lived a maiden you may know
By the name of Annabelle Lee
No other thought did trouble her mind
But to love and be loved by me
We were children both
In this kingdom by the sea
But we loved with a love that was more than love
I and my Annabelle Lee
With a love that the winged angels high
Coveted her and me
This was the reason long ago
In this kingdom by the sea
A wind blew from a stormy cloud
That took my Annabelle Lee
Then her wicked brothers came
To steal her away from me
They shut her up in a tomb below
This kingdom by the sea
But no maiden's grave could sever my soul
From the love she bore for me
For the moon don't beam without a dream
Of my darling Annabelle Lee
For many years I've wandered
Through this kingdom by the sea
I've laid myself beside the bones
Of my beautiful Annabelle Lee
I'll make my bed near the rising tide
In her tomb by the sounding sea
Gracias

She's amazing and I agree that this is a sterling setting for the poem.
Your theory is SUPER interesting! I can totally see it!
Well, this is a nice interpretation but the poem is actually about his wife dying to TB I believe but It is cool how she made it into the song...
But I think you did a dope job with the video itself VERY cool
You are crazy kind to say that! THANKS!
I have loved this poem since I was like 7 years old. Good adaptation to the music.
