      Mellie can't have it both ways. It was she that called Olivia last season to the white house for an event because Fitz wasn't sleeping and she felt if he saw her he would be ok. Then Mellie got upset that Fitz was sleeping but having erections cause he was dreaming about Olivia. Mellie and Cyrus make it so easy for Olitz to be together but then when Fitz decides to give up everything for Olivia they want to breakup Olitz.

    When you are in love with someone you can't just turn it on and off. Its not gonna be easy to get over that person especially when you have never been in love before. Mellie still thinks here that this is just a sleazy affair between her husband and another woman. He has been in love with Olivia since the day he met her. Her quitting her job at the white house didn't change that. She came back into his life and they picked up where they left off. Her screaming at him to get over Olivia is just ridiculous. She used the affair for her own advantage and then when things started to get out of hand she wanna play the wife who husband is unfaithful.

      Not necessarily bc after all this time, she was never expecting his love. She felt disrespected and like he was tricking the presidency for the “secrets of the universe tucked b/w her magic thighs” not realizing he was in love (something she’d never experienced until season 6) and would give up the presidency with a quickness f he could be with Olivia. She’s riding his coattails as she makes clear here. She acts like she’s a jockey, telling Fitz when and where to do what but in reality she’s fringe on his jacket, an ornament upset about where she asked and schemed to be.

    Really people, no one needs to feel sorry for Mellie. Who pimps out their husband so that he can further his career? You don't do that and expect to get him back when you weren't even talking to each other at the beginning. Nope, I don't feel sorry for Mellie. She should find herself someone else but first she has to stop pretending and come into the real world and own up to her self-made problems only then she might find a love for herself if that's what she wants. I don't think Mellie knows how to love openly and honestly.

    • @faithwatkins7811
      @faithwatkins7811 4 года назад +19

      She don't it's not until season 6 when she starts sleeping with Marcus that she knows what love is and she finally realizes that Fitz and Olivia were in love. Like she told Olivia she been without it for so long she didn't know how it felt or how beautiful it is. Her agenda was power just like Cyrus. Remember she didn't want kids and marrying Fitz wasn't a romantic thing because she didn't love him. Some women marry a man for money. She married a man for status and a steppingstone to her career because in order to get powerful roles like the president you gotta marry a powerful man and she did.

    I have absolutely zero sympathy for Mellie. She's known that Fitz has been in love with Olivia from day one - this is a woman who says she's brilliant so she would have identified any threat from the outset - but as long as his love didn't interfere with him getting into the WH she was content to sit back and let him happen. Olivia was the main impetus for Fitz getting to be President. He would have given it up a long time ago to become plain 'John Edwards' so Mellie needs to take a seat.

      Idk why she would completely assume it’s just a fling tho. He didn’t step out on their marriage for over 10 years! Not even considering cheating after she told him she no longer felt connected to her sexual being after Jerry’s birth for an entire decade. It has to be bc she couldn’t see past her own nose to recognize that Fitz values things above power alone, a concept she can’t even wrap her head around.

      but in the beginning mellie kept pushing him to be more powerful like she was only in it for the chance to be first lady. I mean, what woman would really keep a RAPE from her husband, especially if she was raped by the husband's father?! I mean, she didn't even let him protect her, defend her, or be intimate with her after that moment. She killed the love that was in their relationship long before he met Olivia. Mellie keeps acting like she's only with him for the power now.

    • @jealousmaenad
      @jealousmaenad 10 лет назад

      I don't think anyone should be rationalising what a rape victim should or should not have done. Even in real life rape victims find it very hard to tell their family members what's been done to them, in other cases if it is another family member that raped them, it takes years, maybe never. I have worked at a legal aid centre and have run across cases where the abuse stays hidden for years. The Mellie we saw back then was genuinely happy and excited for Fitz to run, very different from the cold Mellie we see today, and in the show we see that this is what changes her. I think she did love Fitz when they were first married, and still loves him a bit which is why it hurts her to see Fitz so in love in Olivia (as alluded to when they were in the bunker). I think if she became so interested in power it is because she has had to sacrifice a lot of things, like what Big Jerry did to her, and her career, because she's always been an ambitious woman and there's nothing wrong with that. She probably felt like she had to get her own back. I'm not saying it's right, I'm saying I understand, after all a lot of people have that kind of attitude as well, like I gave you this, this and this, you have to give me something in return.

      jealousmaenad I'm curious; do you feel making a deal with a man's father to pretend an entire (so far 20 yrr.) relationship & a marriage, family life with a man you never met, is that Mellie being in love or ambitious? Yes, this was an arranged political marriage, but when 1 person doesn't know that they're in a political marriage, is that authentic 'love'?
      In E 218 we learn: 1) Mellie was in on the deal (for Fitz in the Oval) from before the first time she met Fitz at Frank's Tavern & 2) he just figured out was all a set some 20 yrs. later (she never told him herself); 3) that the deal was the exchange of her assets (her thorough-bred DAR, slave-trading family history; her beauty & academic skills) for the fulfillment of her dream to be a Dollie Madison Flotus since she was 10 yrs. old (E106) = just shy of prostitution. So for you is this Mellie, a woman in love with Fitz, a man who was her target (like Olivia was Jake's target) or was this ambition? Since for you seeing E307 flashbacks where Mellie was smiling & bubbly means she was in love, do you feel Fitz would've married her if she showed him her calculating, conniving, cold, 'ambitious' side that has no empathy for others? Do you think if Mellie revealed that she thought (E 301) Fitz an idealistic, optimistic, romantic idiot like his father thought of him, he would've proposed to her? So now when she is bubbly & smiling doesn't she look the same? It's all the same act. What do you think made her make a deal with Big Gerry (E307 - in the conversation where Cyrus reminds her) to give up a job she loved (partner in a law firm) to do charity work, babysit Fitz, hold his hand & wipe his nose & get them in the WH instead? Since Fitz (E106) confirms he never asked her to do that or to have children, & clearly neither thing was what she wanted, did she do it for love of Fitz or love of the dream/goal? If Fitz was Mellie's love why does she always refer to their marriage as a (E202 - limo) partnership or (E307) friendship & not their great love? Why doesn't she talk about how much she has loved him, & how he's breaking her heart by not loving her anymore? Is it love or ambition that has her assert (E214) that she's sorry he feels betrayed by Defiance, not sorry that she, his wife betrayed his moral ideals? Since Mellie's default for getting through to Fitz or solving a problem is a lie, deceit or a plot (she never wants him to know about), or since Mellie doesn't feel conflicted or sad when she is doing things he wouldn't want, approve, or like, do you think that she is being a woman who knows, respects & loves her man or a woman who is ambitious without a concern for his values?
      You're correct, ambition itself is not a negative, but ambition camouflaged as love is. If Mellie was openly who she is, honestly who she was with Fitz from the beginning of their marriage it'd be accurate to read their flashback state as 'loving'. But since it was her secret job to give him 'the boyfriend/husband experience' (it's a service high-priced call girls offer their johns) for a goal, it's more accurate to read this as 'The Con-artist & the Mark'. What is nebulous in this Mellitz union is that Fitz did want a career in public service/politics, so viewers confuse that with him wanting that career at the expense of his other values. But it's clear he valued (E106, 211, 219, 213, 218, 307) authenticity, organic love, empathy, a loving family life, honesty, loyalty, independence, & true (not bought, stolen or faked) success more. So how is it love or loving to ignore, or play false on your husband's values & ideologies from the first day that you met to present? I'm confused.
      Mellie's approach to coping with the rape is just 1 of rape victims' coping methods, not revealing it to 'loving' husband is not atypical as you say. However punishing him for her being raped, for him not being empathetic, for the fact that she chose to 'sacrifice' her mental health by sublimating all the effects from it - because the truth would derail the WH goal/deal she secretly made with her rapist ... that's very smelly from Mellie. And the smell is stink. The fact that she was a victim of rape is horrible by itself; but Fitz DID NOT rape her or participate in covering it up, so why must she continue to cast herself as HIS victim? HE was hers & Big Gerry's victim in their secret plot before they even met; he was the victim of the secret Defiance plot too; he was her victim when she forged his signature on the reinstatement letter; he was a victim when he was denied a sexual intimacy post the rape & never knew why; Teddy was her pawn/victim when she induced his birth & is a distant mother (E305); Liv & he were (E103, 312) victims of her pimping; he was the victim of her leaking(215) Nat. Security details & (E201) war policy statements; she is a victim of an affair that she co-signed & facilitates because - as she said (E305 E217 & E311) he cannot function maximally without love/Olivia. Mellie knows he is not like her, just thriving on public praise & power. They are mis-matched, he needs to feel consumed by love & would give everything for it, she (E 314), admitted she had no clue about such a feeling, & (E214) she admitted that she'd do anything, destroy anyone or anything who would get in the way of what she wanted, the WH.
      Team Mellie-ites, do you think Fitz would've fallen in love with Mellie if she was organically authentic when they met? Who do you think Mellie loves authentically? Andrew? Has she shown him who she really is? Teddy? (He thinks Marta is is mama.) Do you think she would have treated Gerry any differently if she knew he was Fitz's all along? Teddy is his, Karen is his, & she's distant, analytical, 'pretends what's real' with them too (E315, as she tried to tell Karen she was mistaken at what she saw)? Who or what is loved, precious to Mellie?

      You do have valid points, however to say she has been nothing but cold and cunning all those years is not completely true as well. Even if it had been a political marriage, it does not rule out the fact that she could have fallen in love with him too. I am not prepared to say that there was no love, or she certainly would not have reached out to Fitz in many scenes, trying to make things better between them as husband and wife (I don't remember what episode this is, but they were in a car and she apologises, something about being partners? I think it was season 2) and we also see her reaching out to her husband by joining him in the shower, trying to ease his pain even though she couldn't. Even Tony Goldwyn believes Mellie is in love with Fitz (in his interview with Ellen). I think if she was purely all about ambition she wouldn't have been as bothered about her husband's affair as she was. it would have been ok do what you want as long as I'm first lady. She wouldn't have been so jealous of Olivia otherwise. I don't know if she loves Andrew, I did think it was about sex, but we might get more into it when with the next season since he might be around more and we see if it really is about love or sex. About the rape, I agree, she is wrong to punish him when he didn't know what his father did to her but I understand why it led her to act the way she did. I did think it was a psychological thing after the rape, she couldn't bear to think that both the father and the son knew her carnally, perhaps? She couldn't bear to be touched by Fitz after what his father did to her.
      Again, I love Mellie as a character because she is complex, and she brings so much to the story. I don't choose sides like Mellie vs. Olivia, I am trying to appreciate what is happening from all sides of the story so that there are layers and layers of complexity to it. I only share the points above as the scenes where I can saw that she is more than the cold ambitious shrew everyone wants her to be. It is so easy to paint Olivia and Fitz together and cast Mellie as the bad woman but I don't choose to look at it that way. I try to understand their motivations and their desires and the actions that come from it and I don't judge those actions as good or evil to justify who Fitz should be with. After all, he will be with who he ends up with. I'm not wracking up points for an Olivia versus Mellie smackdown, because in doing that you would tend to pick a side and discount good things the other side did and play up the bad. You miss a lot of the richness of the story in process.
      In my original comment, I did just say it could have been different if things didn't happen the way they did. Why people are going all anti-Mellie on me, it is my opinion that she was just dying to tell him to get over his mistress. Just to look at how cleverly acted, full of pent-up rage and desperation. I stand by my opinion that it could have been a happy marriage even if it was politically motivated (it's not impossible) and if things were different. Things aren't different and they happened and clearly they are not in that place anymore.

      Yet Shonda went and did it seasons later on her pseudo feminist soapbox. It nakes no sense to have a woman who has no political experience of her own and a career she left get to do the job people like Fitz spent a life being groomed for.

    Having problems keeping your man's love? Read Mellie Grant's "Guide to Keeping Your Man & Your Marriage - a story of threats, lies, manipulation and pretense". It shows how a confident, intelligent, ambitious (& self-proclaimed) brilliant woman keeps her political man in check ... It's not for those of us who want 2 B happy, but it is for those of us who want what they 'worked' for no matter how unstable, miserable & lonely the life. I guess this is what she tells her daughter marriage is...WOW!
