- I like Olitz as much as the next girl, but it upsets me how much this pairing has tortured Mellie. She is no victim. Just like every character on the show, she has a HUGE grey area. But she's human. And she hurts. She hurts a lot. It upsets me that people view HER as the other woman. It upsets me that some hate her just because she's Fitz's wife, and they just disregard her feelings.
Mellie loves Fitz and would do anything for him because she believes in him and she believes in the greatness of his mission towards his country. And that's why I refuse to believe that Mellie had anything to do with her husband's shooting -- it just can't be. She's not that evil. Oh, God, please don't let her be the killer!
Anyway, this is a compilation of her best moments in season 2. Some are awesomely crazy and others are heartbreakingly sad.
But in the end, they all prove why Mellie is one of my favorite characters on Scandal.

I cudn't agree more!!! Bellamy's acting has sooo many layers- She can pitch it BIG, when needed. Can go subtle when asked... She always manages to pull a new one from under the hat! Among the most underrated actors on tv!
i used to hate mellie but then you see her getting hurt over and over again by Olitz and you realise how much she's given up and sacrified for Fitz and he just doesnt know or give a shit.. she's complicated, intelligent and shes probably acts the way she does because shes in love with her husband and he shoves his affair in her face #TeamMellie

I always loved mellie
Mellie never loved Fitz and vice versa. Their marriage was arranged by their fathers. After she was raped by his father she shut down and pulled away from Fitz but he stayed faithful until he met Olivia. She condoned the affair but she did not expect for Fitz to fall for Olivia so hard. He was willing to give up the presidency and his wife for Olivia multiple times but in Mellie mind the thought of him loving Olivia never crossed it. It was just supposed to be about sex and that's it.

Mellie didn’t sacrifice for Fitz. She just decided to have a political career over a personal life. She used being First Lady as a stepping stone to be president.

Mellie is definitely one of the best characters on the show, and very complex. She's vindictive yet really deep when it comes to her love for Fitz. And Bellamy is a QUEEN.

It's funy how in interviews Tony says as Fitz its hard to say mean things to the Olivia character but he never says that about Mellie who is his wife. He feels bad after saying mean things to her it's just he's so fustrated and just too through with Mellie. It's like him being president is keeping him from being with his true love, Olivia

Mellie is great. Bellamy's acting is excellent. They are all good but both her and Cyrus always deliver. The show would be lame without them, i hope SR keeps them next season or the olitz love story might just turn boring and oh so lame.
When Mellie screams at him to get over her my eyes filled up wow.. i totally felt that for her. I mean just put urself there and u know as a woman. This is my best scene with Bellamy
Keep in mind she's not telling him to get over her because she loves him and wants him to love her. She's telling him to get over Olivia because as long as Olivia is in his life her place in the white house is threatened. She don't love Fitz. She loves the perks of being first lady Mellie Grant. Throughout this conversation did you hear her tell Fitz she love him? Nope this conversation was strictly about her political future. She needs Fitz and his place of power to achieve her goal which is to become president.
Mellie is the most interesting character on the show and also such a sad one. Not necessarily in a sympathetic, victim way but in a pitiable one. Something is inherently wrong with her and watching her live day in and day out a life that doesn't fulfill her is just pitiful. You can tell she's just so miserable and despondent in her everyday life and it is all through her own masochistic self making. She's a very off individual in this Stepford, plastic-y way that seems so unnatural, and she doesn't seem to truly relate to people. It almost seems as if she is a few steps away from just completely imploding in on herself, and falling into madness which makes her suicide attempts that much more believable. It's really involving to watch that transpire and adapt to so many different settings, and yet her overall mood doesn't change and she never grows from any learning experiences. You would think after everything with Fitz she would move on, but she doesn't. In a lot of ways she's so much worse than a similar character like Bree Van De Kamp who shares a lot of downfalls and joint fate. But Mellie seems to be much worse off, like something is deeply, intrinsically broken within her. She has no clue what happiness or love really is. She's mechanical, detached, Machiavellian and predatory. So much so that she doesn't knows how to express or meaningfully have a true connection which is why Fitz can't be with her. He feels like everything concerning her is fake and immaterial. Does Mellie really love anything? She's said that she can't be a true mother to her children, which is fine but in all aspects of her life she fails to live up to the needs of her loved ones. She does things out of duty rather than true preference or deference to things that she wants, and therefore her love with always be quantifiable. The way she shackles herself to things isn't healthy. She perpetually distances herself from emotion and because she isn't actively seeking what she wants (or needs) she's just lost in an endless sea of despair because she is unfulfilled in life. This makes everyone around her equally miserable. She would rather hitch herself to a man who doesn't love her (and whom she doesn't really love if we honestly think about it) just for appearance purposes and to achieve her hollow dream of becoming a First Lady and increase her politically status -- even though that title has given her no additional value in her life and it's unlikely that she would achieve any additional merit in the future. So sad, so wrong and so deeply flawed.

Being first lady is the stepping stone to what she really wants and that's to be president which is what she becomes the last season. We find out season 3 that her father in law raped her when Fitz ran for governor. She was never gonna tell Fitz. He found out from Olivia. Yes she had children she didn't want and played the role of what a wife suppose to play but it wasn't what she wanted as her identity. Her husband paid for the sins of his father all those years and in her mind the least she can do is let him be unfaithful to her but what she didn't expect was for him to fall in love with her. She practically made it easy for him. For Mellie to be so brilliant she really was so naive.

Keep in mind throughout that whole conversation did she tell Fitz that she loved him and that she wanted him to love her? No that entire conversation was about keeping him focused on what she thought was important and that's for him to stay president because it's a steppingstone to her future. This is why she has put up with so much with Fitz. Remember she has condoned the affair with Fitz and Olivia for the longest. The problem is she don't comprehend that he's actually in love with Olivia. She just thinks its lust. No woman that actually loves their husband is gonna pimp out her husband to another woman. She would be making it easy for the next chick. Fitz and Mellie marriage isn't based on love. It's a political arranged marriage that went downhill after his father raped her while Fitz ran for governor. We find that out the next season 3. That's why it's cold, distant, and dead
Excellent compilation! Shows Mellie as the complex woman that she is. Starts w/her being hurt by Fitz's words and ends with her feeling vulnerable. In between, she teaches Fitz & Olivia the importance of public image and team work, advises a woman whose husband strayed, manipulates Hal (weak-ass) and Tom, shares details of his dreams with Fitz and warns him of her political viability and sharpshooter skills. You have done Mellie justice as does Bellamy Young in her portrayal of a scary FLOTUS.

I don't care how much some like Liv, I LOVE Mellie! She knows what her marriage is reduced to and has resigned to the fact that she's lost her husband. Matter of fact, in the back of her mind, she realizes that she's currently married to a high strung, alchoholic, elderly person murdering, shouldn't be President...old girl is gonna come out looking better!! I love Mellie, I know her character isnt designed to be lovable, but Mellie knows what she is in this for the "First lady" position. She does love Fitz but I think she loves her position more. So him trying to be with Olivia doesnt bother her because she's jealous, its because she doesnt want to ruin their chances of a second term.
She is my favourite character on the show. Liv and Fitz are so annoying now.

i love Mellie and I think that Bellamy does a great job with the character. They all do great job with their characters which is why we can love them and hate them depending on the day. But you left off the best clip ever, when Mellie was telling Fitz he was his father and that his children hates him now that was great

I won't front, I love Mellie. I think she and Fitz weren't necessarily in love, but they were partners, and the agreement was, that he'd go into the White House, and then she'd leverage it for her shot at it, ala Hillary Clinton. Fitz falling for Olivia meant that he went off the reservation, and Mellie is all sorts of pissed and constricted as First Lady. I love Mellie. Bellamy Young needs an Emmy, b/c in the hands of another actress, the character could have been a one note harpy.

Miss Mellie typifies the model of women that have been placed on the pedestal of the ultimate woman. She has been the measuring rod used for women throughout the world in terms of beauty, intelligence, marriage model and sexuality. BOOM now the world is seeing that women of color are beautiful and intelligent among other virtues. This show reflects the fact that the pedestal no longer is exclusive to women of European lineage only.

People say these things all the time. They think they know what they'd do when they try to place themselves in someone elses shoes. If you were the first lady of the united states, the most powerful and influential nation in the world, you wouldn't throw that all away by divorcing your husband, even for cheating.

Mellie Grant is my favourite female character on the show. I love Fitz but without Mellie and Olivia, he would just be another rich boy working for his daddy. Both of these phenomenal women moulded him into a man worthy of leading a nation. I can't wait to see more of Mellie's character as the show unravels. Also Fitz and Olivia, I love them together.

I listened to this entire speech and I realize that Mellie was only worried about her and her only. Not that her husband was having an affair but that it was gonna affect her future and goals and dreams of a political career. Being first lady was just a stepping stone for her and she didn't want anything to jeopardize that. She's not saying get over her to love and be faithful to her she saying get over her because the more Olivia is in his life he will give up his presidency for her and Mellie don't want that at all. Disagree - Mellie is not in love with Fitz and has never been - it appears to have been a marriage of convenience - going by the last episode with his dad and if that was the case, she definitely has missed the boat - as she lacks compassion and is too self-absorbed - she is just interested in her title and political career. She is put out because Fitz has found someone he can love and relate to and when she's had the opportunity to make amends she's had no clue about his emotions and needs.

Gotta luv Mellie! Bellamy Young is playing her character so well. I'm def an Olitz fan but Mellie is starting to become my fave character on the show. I'd like to see more of her. Also, I don't think Mellie was involved in the murder attempt. First, that'll be too easy of an answer and the writers never do that. Second, who wants to stand next to a person knowing they're about to be shot? You'll want to be far away to make sure the bullet doesn't hit or graze you. I say it was Hollis or the VP.
Mellie Grant is the best character on the show!! The writers should give even more importance to her.. I always look forward to her epic dialogues and Bellamy Young is a brilliant actress for this role.... The writers should keep her character this way - a strong, devious, POLITICAL ANIMAL.. Um first of all Mellie never loved Fitz. The entire 5 seasons they were married not once did Mellie say that she loved Fitz hell they never said I love you to each other. Fitz has always said it only to Olivia. Mellie has always said they were a team. Yes Mellie is human but she is also power hungry. She was sold into a marriage and her goal was to get into the white house and being first lady was that stepping stone not the end result. Mellie condoned the affair between Olitz because she couldn't fill that void in the marriage but when she realized Fitz was in love with Olivia all of a sudden Olivia is a whore and she looks down at Fitz all the time with this oh my husband is unfaithful routine. I wish the best for Mellie but she is no saint. I hate that we find out later that she was raped by big Jerry while Fitz ran for governor but if she really loved her husband she wouldnt have pimped him out to Olivia and she wouldnt have him pay for the sins of his father all those years. After that tragedy Fitz was still faithful until he met Olivia.

Miss Mellie carries on the status quo that she was born into, she supports the image of the Stepford Wife therefore she is loved by all that perceive the perfect woman does all the things just like Miss Melllie.
