Thanks Wave! Great job! Sorry I was so hard on you about the water and such. But you just missed a lot of cool things...lol You know you're my favorite! You didn't miss 4:51. Go back and watch your face at 8:00! Your whole face and eyes perked up right away, like "What The Heck". Sorry if I confused you. I called it "magic" because (in my non-musical mind) she was doing that one insanely fast roll one handed. I thought she has always done that with two hands. Not sure how many drummers do it with one hand. In typical fashion YOYOKA surprises us with all kinds of stuff in this one. The song, reading music now, and her restraint (for most of the song), and of course the "magic" I mentioned. YOYOKA is the "Fusion" in this Jazz Fusion song. I believe they released two full CD's as Ken Okada and Group featuring YOYOKA (in less than a month?). Rob Yule knows better than me. You have to wonder at 7:16 (in this video) if that little smirk/smile the guitarist does is "Wow, she's amazing!" or "Who the hell does this little girl think she is coming in and stealing the show from our band." lol We're never sick of you pointed out her advanced skill level regardless of her age. She's a 50 y.o. drummer locked up in a 13 y.o.'s body.
I can quote Hristo Vitchev (guitarist) if you want (February 27th): "What a wonderful and inspiring session we had this past weekend recording some absolutely stunning music by bassist Noriyuki (Ken) Okada and featuring my dear friend and Grammy Award-Winning saxophonist Benny Torres and the absolutely one of a kind wunderkind and child prodigy drummer from Japan - Yoyoka. You should keep an eye on her as I truly believe in as little as 5 years or so she might be one of the world’s great drummers. Video and some audio snippets coming soon." She recorded the second album on July 24th (yes, in just one day), but that album is not released yet. First was released on July 22nd.
You wrote _"... she was doing that one insanely fast roll one handed."_ The roll is one hand one foot. Thank You for requesting this. It's my favourite from the EP. Best Wishes. ☮
@@gbulmer Of course. Thanks G. You probably know by now I don't know music. I don't know about the foot. That's why I have nice people like you and Wave to help me understand this stuff (although it still doesn't sink in...lol. I was focused on just the right hand, previously seeing that she normally does the roll on the toms with two hands, and I was seeing her (in my mind) doing the same with one hand. That's how my simple mind works. Thanks again.
Thanks Glen and Wave. It is a cracking track. You noted Hristo's smile but did you catch Ken's at the very end. I think he was well happy with the performance. Next up perhaps Mr. Big's Colorado bulldog cover. Andrew Rooney was stunned.
HI Wave, incredible the speed of her hands and her extraordinary synchronism, 13 years old and she is already in demand to record in the studio. Plus no matter the style of music, nothing seems to intimidate her.
Great review and I think the other Glen got confused and overwhelmed by Yoyoka's advanced skills and his mind shut down for minute and when we came to, he was sure he seen something that no one else has seen :D. On another note, just watched her newest video of the jam night at the Whisky and she killed it. with two different groups.
How can you be amazed at this point. Everything she does is amazing. Now if someone else played like her, I'd be amazed. Actually I know they're around. Some even better than her, FOR NOW! She's still a baby.
This is my favourite EP track. Yoyoka is very supportive and restrained, then she gets 'off the chain' from about 6:57. She's *_GLORIOUS._* 🎆 I imagine Hristo Vitchev (guitarist) smiles, (7:16), are a musician's appreciation, and delight 'cos it feels like Yoyoka _'brings it home'._ I've been hoping Yoyoka would get there one day, so I was overjoyed by this. 😂 A new chapter started with this EP, and I hope it's a thread through many years of her life. Jazz/Fusion is ripe for her. She isn't quite there yet, but it feel like even Steve Gadd, Colaiuta, Wekle, and co, would be OK with this composition and performance. Best Wishes. ☮
Thanks Glen Thanks Wave. Thanks Yoyoka! She covered a song by Tool recently. I thought it was a truncated version of Pneuma but I was wrong! 😮 I lose my mind with admiration for this immensely talented musician! I rely on my friends to correct me when I'm wrong! And I keep them busy!
I saw videos of her taking lessons in english - reading charts with an english drum teacher back in Japan. It was part of a series called something like "Yoyoka takes drum lessons in english" . She was a quick learner and with her potential she might be "a vista" playing by now. At least on a level where she can foresee the measures and time signatures of different parts in a song
First time I watched this it melted my mind. She has come sooooooo far.
Glen is right... the right hand swing between the toms. Incredible. Plus, she reads music now!

Seriously! Our Yoyoka plays like a jazz pro three times her age!! She never ceases to amaze.
@@benjamindoverr3455 Indeed! ...but only 3?

She is such a mature Musician now and she is in the Jazz/Fusion realm!!! Loving it!!!

@Glen.Black’s brain frequently shuts down 😂
@@Rob-Yule Wave takes offense to that, as we both share a brain. You insulted his half the brain!

@chrisegbertky It was Forty Six Plus 2 not Pneuma.
Great. When did Yoyoka learn to read music?

Think Billy Cobham x Charlie Mingus.
Figured they were around, but far and few between I imagine.
