We witnessed a new dimension to her playing when Ken Okada picked her up.

For sure. Ken bringing Yoyoka into the fold is a savvy move on his part and definitely a vertical move for her.

They’d be right at home heading at any jazz festival. Monterey comes to mind. Yoyoka IMHO is at that level. Mind blowing.

Awesome reaction as always! She has recorded 3 albums with Ken Okada Group all 1 day sessions. The chemistry between them is so solid - thus the single take recordings. YOYOKA is such a solid session player already.

I hadn't 'clocked' the third album, only two. Ken Okada is the "Patron Saint of Yoyoka's". This musical relationship and experiences are what she needed to be on a track to become genuinely one of the best in the world. John Bomham was famously influenced by jazz drummers. I'm very deeply happy for her. 😂
      Best Wishes for a wonderful 2024. ☮

@@gbulmer Ken Okada is very happy to have met Yoyoka also. He praises her and their collaboration every live gig they do. Think of the feeling to play pocket with Yoyoka when you have hungered your whole life for a matching rytm section.
He also had an important person, that he talks about in a longer interview, who ment a lot for his career in the US. Fate or just the same destination?

Saxophonist Ben Torres has a grammy as a member of the Pacific Mambo Orchestra. Hristo Vitchev (guitarist - not on this song) has several media awards, has played on 10+ albums, and has released a bunch of publications and videos on modern jazz guitar. His chord voicings are astounding. Ken Okada (bassist) really picked some talented musicians for his album.

I think you can feel Yoyoka’s rock influences even in her jazz solos, which tend to feature her toms more than I would usually expect in a jazz performance. I never cease to be amazed by her talent and professionalism at such a young age. 😎👍

I swear I could hear the jazz club patrons applauding in the background at the end of her solo! She did a standing room only concert with this group back last yr I think it was in San Jose. I think you're right about this being composed. So restained and absolutely fitting with the gig! What do you want to bet she could deliver the same take after take? Same sound level, pace and feel. I hope she becomes a studio musician!
Again thanks for this reaction and to the super villian who requested it! You always enhance our appreciation for these stellar performances by Yoyoka and co.

Thank you. I always enjoy your helpful insights putting the drumming I hear into context. I lost the groove for a couple of beats during Yoyoka's solo the first few times I listened alone, then skipped over this one. Yet with your break down, the groove was always there. Isn't that weird? You make music more enjoyable and more precious. 😂
Best Wishes for a Healthy, Happy, Peaceful 2024. ☮

1986? The drum solo made me think of the times of Buddy Rich, (end stick grip with light fluttering solos) but he passed away 1987.

Just remember that Senri Kawaguchi played both rock and metal before she settled into fusion and jazz. God bless Senri and her talent, I like Yoyoka getting some alternative time signature experience playing in a jazz combo, but I hope that she doesn't give up on rock like Senri did.
That being said, just bear in mind that she performs live with this group.

By the way, appareantly, Pearl stopped taking care of Yoyoka and she is now enodorsed by Ludwig drums.

I watched the whole performance several times and and this particular part stands out for me. Thank you, Mark. ruclips.net/video/Fk2sb9GGsEU/видео.html

@@AndrewRooneyDrumswe all have favourites of this gig. Mine is the number Traces starting at 1hr 20 ish. Last one before the encore. It features what I reckon to be the perfect in number solo. It was also just after her own solo. The encore is great too, a Bob Berg tune. Den is Chambers was the original drummer for that one.

She has a new drum kit by the way. Ludwig drum and they sound really nice. I think she is still fine tuning it a bit. She is doing a lot of live gigs at the wiskey a go go in LA. Need to do more of her but she is not doing many videos lately. One of her last ones is Home at last Steely Dan song. Drums on the orginal was Bernard Purdy. She seems to love Jazz. I think jazz is her favorite most disagree with me. Take care Andrew.

Yoyokas´ drumming is keeping it all together, the rest is too random and makes no sense really... and yes, I know Jazz.
