if you don’t want this boss fight to take an hour you can also kite grym under the big hammer with minor illusion and then shoot the lever to do the usual big damage
In gaseous form you can kite him forever over lava and you are immune to his stomp because you don't touch the ground and you still can use the levers...
This helps a ton, this fight I can usually manage pretty easily down in the pit on any other difficulty I can’t risk taking large risks in honor mode, though I will say I am proud of doing the spider matriarch, gnolls, and the owlbear in a single long rest at lvl 4.
@@VDA19 don’t really know, it was early game only within the first 4 hours of play so I guess I said why not, I also had 2 totem barbarians so I could tank plenty of hits. My aim was to play as efficiently as possible and I think that is certainly one of my proudest moments. I essentially doubled up my party comp with 2 of each build I was going for so when one ran out of resources I substituted for the other. I did have a ton of buffs cast on my characters though from hirelings at camp though.
Just get the returning pike and toss it from that same location. Due to the distance, even if it misses, it still does like 30 damage because of how far it travels. Eventually you'll kill it.
Yes, I know... I just completely forgot I have it. Though I have even better strategy for next time: Get an Eldritch Knight, use Weapon Bond on a Salami, shower Grym with salami
God bless this video. I'm certainly not doing this strat, but this video made me realize that I can just misty step on that narrow pathway on top out of there. I exhausted every healing potion, every spell, thought my honour difficulty 30+ hour playghrough is done for, but not this time! ☠
Misty step...I love that spell. It's actually good in several instances, not just to get to hard to reach places. I use it as a combat strategy to move away from mobs to a place that's not threatened.
Thank you! I just killed Grym using this strat and a eldrich knight throwing a maul, This dude ended my last run so i had no qualms cheesing his fight x)
I guess throwing a maul was way quicker than shooting arrows :D I am all for cheesing this guy. I can§t really imagine beating him by normal means (unless you bring 4 Open Hand monks or something similar)
Worked. I debated even doing this fight since I was at the PONR for Act 2. The only bad part was getting him to stand in the lava but thats an issue even if you do it normally.
In the spirit of cheesing, try this: 1 in camp 2 up top to shoot valve and lever, 1 as bait under hammer. Bait dies, camp revive. Rinse and repeat. Will be faster
or just get an eldritch knight hireling, give them a big maul, bond to the maul - and just throw that shit down onto him. He's vulnerable to bludgeoning - and you can have another person down at the forge - cranking the valve, the first crank you do in invis so Grym doesn't aggro - and once Grym aggros at your knight and walks to the edge, the stealthy guy can just turn the valve out of combat
Aaaaaah, Eldritch Knight. I always forget about that class. Thanks, that's a good tip. I wanted to make a video where I shower Grym with Salami, but I didn't have enough Salami. Now I only need one.
This doesn't seem to work anymore. I had him standing in lava, but he never overheated unless I sent someone down there with him, which he promptly one shot. He wouldn't budge, just stood in the lava, immune to damage. Nothing would move him, tried command. It hit him, but he still just stood there, wouldn't flee or move to anywhere.
This can be done WAY easier and faster with a similar strat. (Doable at level 3 with weapon bond, but with lv5 for extra attack its faster) Recruit a hireling > Make them a TB thrower with either returning pike or eldritch knight for bound weapon. Leave everyone but the thrower on the forge, with the thrower hireling on the upper ledge/stairs IN STEALTH/HIDING Turn the wheel to spawn grym, he spawns superheated straight away. Throw your pike/weapon at grym at his furthest side, so the weapon lands on top of him and deals the bonus damage to him from being crushed. If you have extra attack, throw again. You are far enough away from the fight on the ledge, so flee combat to camp > immediately leave camp. You will be exactly where you were before, but outside of combat. Then throw again, go back to camp, rinse, repeat til dead. I was dealing ~10 damage from the throw itself, but 30 bludgeoning damage from the weapon weight per throw. Since turn order is paused Grym should always be superheated and vulnerable, and never move. (Initiative might be something that could cause issues, but you could always ditch TB for alert if there are issues with turn order. Itll just be a tiny bit slower)
there's this bug that sometimes happen with returning pike. when you initiate combat by throwing it, it sometimes doesn't return to your hand. learned it the hard way fighting minthara lol. you can remedy it by throwing another weapon, and then throwing pike when you're in combat
@@MARUSHI-YT Yeah, that behavior/bug is consistent across all throwing weapons and its infuriating. But doing what I described, Grym and the rest of your party are already in combat with the turn order effectively paused. The spear returns as normal every single time. I have done it on 2 separate honor runs now and haven't had an issue
Yes :) But this method basically needs no preparations, no consumables, no spell slots. Just a lot of arrows. And since this is the Honour run and I have never tried the Owlbear method, I wanted to play it safe.
@zoboothemafoo as I have read, you need to drop druid ass right next to the enemy, and not targeting them because fall damage is separate instance of damage. That's what I've read anyway. Haven't used druid class myself yet
I am just shooting arrows and Eldritch Blasts. Is he Superheated when you attack him? If he's not superheated, he is completely immune to all damage. I had to ask, because that's the only reason I can think of why he would be immortal.
@@GamingBirch yeah i read some of the comments and realized he had to stand in lava and when I did it my game bugged for a few solid rounds or smth cause he was not losing HP either way. Finally defeated him tho, thanks a lot!
@@bruhnotagain Clearly they have patched this, or something is different in Honor Mode. I sent my Gale down in gas form, and he one shot him, and now he is standing in lava, but not overheating, and immune to all damage. I have no idea what to do.
@bruhnotagain I eventually did beat it by sending everyone but my Tav down to do the fight the normal way. Constant running around and dying while Tav is in the top bleachers chucking health potions like a Super Bowl quarterback.
Isn't that power available only in act 3, after you get the enhanced tadpole from the emperor? Either way, in Honour mode you can't target enemies with that power. Edit: Ok, it's not Act 3 only, but the Honour part is true.
if you don’t want this boss fight to take an hour you can also kite grym under the big hammer with minor illusion and then shoot the lever to do the usual big damage
Smart move
I was wondering if that would be possible, thanks
You have saved what is left of my sanity
Yeah but people want to defeat the golem without the hammer for the achievement. Hammer tactic is obviously far superior otherwise.

This massively did the trick thank you so much!
Happy to help :)
Nicely done! I was half expecting to see you throw a few salami down there for some humiliation :')
I was planning to do that, but then I completely forgot :( I definitely need to make a video where I shower him exclusively with salami.
So... Andron just posted the answer to my problem of not having enough Salami:
Eldritch Knight.
It takes a while, but it works, good idea, thank you!
Way faster to just put down minor illusion on the centre platform, then shoot the lever with an arrow when he’s on it.

Berserker Karlach with Tavern Brawler and a nice supply of hammers works too.
@@davidkusner5637 Especially with the old Tavern Brawler, that dealt damage even to completely immune targets. I miss that one.
Did they change something so you can't just RKO with owlbear or what?
