well, let's see here, prolly open a can of worms but let's analyze this situation with an un biased point of view from an observational point of view only.
1- yes jerry was older than her. duh.
2- although jerry was older, he wasn't that much older, what was his age here,? 20 or 22? he's really still a kid himself, not justifying it, just saying, besides young adults mature differently per gender, girls usually mature faster than boys, so,, they just "might" be the same maturity at these ages, pending.
3- before the 20th century, before modern rules and regulations of what constitutes a cultural acceptance of an intimate relationship, it was a normal thing for people to get married young, people usually didn't live as long as we do today unless you go back to the days before the flood (only exception), young daughters were considered old maids if they didn't get married and have kids by a certain young age because of hormones and what not. a lot of women got married and started having kids in their teens, besides, people were more spread out on farms back then and needed all the help they can get on the farm hence getting started young having babies. socially accepted.
4- they were first cousins. well, can't really defend that, but, there was a lot of that back before the 20th century. whether you agree or disagree with it, that's up to you, just saying it happened. actually, it happened with even closer relations as in immediate siblings, again, just saying it did happen quite often throughout history, doesn't make it right, but it happened. the bible talks about it was ok to a "certain point in time", genetics were different when trying to get the population up from 2 or 8 (garden of eden & noah's family) to more. it had to happen. like i said, up to a certain point of time, then it get's cut off.

In the United States, it’s legal to marry your first cousin in 26 states. Here first cousin incest is a matter of geography, not morality. As for age of consent, now the lowest age is 14 (Hawaii, Idaho and South Carolina). Don’t know what it was then.
