I find it interesting he was married 7 times, all to younger women. I find it creepy that three of his children (all sons I believe) died accidentally and two the exact same way (drown in a pool). My guess is the rush to marry Myra was because Jerry got her pregnant, if her first child was born when she was 14, and subtract the months they were married, that should have been a premature child. I think the man is just a creep. What the hell were her parents thinking? Who allows their 13 year old to be alone with a 22 year old man you move into your home? If I would have found out he was picking her up from school he would have been walking down the road real fast.

Child marriages are about owning a wife not having a wife. Chances that these young girls are being respected and treated like equal partners are low. By marrying a teenager, the adult can take total control. The idea that a thirteen year old is ready for marriage is really about a grown man wanting a baby factory, to cook , clean and serve him. If these men really care about these young girls, they would put their selfishness aside and wait. There are plenty of women who stay married because they feel trapped.

The tabloids should have made more news about what laws he was breaking & put that type of spin on it. This was more calling him a Chomo, her parents selling her off , her being a hussy , they were all shunned. He could have been a real man instead of a juvenile horn dog . He could have gotten his divorce then did his European tour then she’d have been a year older and it would have just been a young love story. But boys will be boys and men will be chomos.

It's not always a case of grooming, though mostly it is, most probably. Not for my great grand parents anyhow. Also, please remember that this took place at the turn of the century, early 1900s. Different time, different outlooks, before 18 was made the mandatory age of a teenager's transition from teen to adult.
My great-grandmother met her boyfriend when she was 13 and he, 18. They totally fell for each other. He was always respectful and always treated her well.
When she was 16 and him 21, their friends asked them why on earth they weren't married yet, as they were so in love. He proposed on the spot and she accepted. Her beat friend organised they whole thing for them! She went home, told her Mom she was going to spend the night at her friend's house, packed her best dress, and went off and got married.
As newly weds, they got their first little house on the edge of the woods. He was wallpapering they ceiling, as they did in those days, when all the wet wallpaper fell on top of him just as she came in with his lunch. She burst out laughing, he was totally offended, chased her round the house, and she grabbed a basket and ran into the woods and picked berries until she figured he'd calmed down. She brought the basket of barries back as a gift for him, and they both felt so awful and miserable for fighting that they made a packed there, and then that they wouldn't ever go to sleep on a fight. It turned out to be their one and only fight. They had a long and very happy marriage until he passed away when my Mom, their granddaughter, was a little girl.
My great-grandfather loved his family to bits, was an excellent husband, excellent father, and fab grandfather. Same can be said about my great-grandmother. Theirs was a love story for the ages, and they loved each other until their dying days.

@@jayadaradhika1408 I am happy it worked out but that was a time when a woman's choices were limited, and a man was trained to look for a very young, very fertile, and traditionally obedient wife. Your grandmother might have thought that at least he is kind, handsome and gentle. Giving no thought to "how do I see myself in 20 years, what are my goals, do I want to be a wife at 16 and a mother? Maybe I should finish high school, travel, go to college, find out what I am passionate about and how I fit into the world". Back then for most women that wasn't a discussion, an option. I am not saying all men were creepy and bad, it was a culture for sure, stlll is. I bet your grandfather could see what a wonderful woman your gran would be some day, what he didn't know was she was just a child, back then once a girl menstruated she was considered ready for marriage as she could reproduce, and reproduce often. We also know people didn't live as long...

Reading through the comments, it seems the ones agreeing it was ok are those whose grandparents were young when they married. It might have been common but doesn't make it right. My dad's family of aunts, uncles, cousins, grandparents were all from the south and my mom's maternal side was so I do kind of know southern things. However, the only one married younger than 20, was my great-grandmother in 1905. She was 16. Jerry Lee didn't marry her for necessity or to start a family, he already had two wives before Myra and had a bunch more after, so it is plain that he did it for his own lust and that makes him a pervert child rapist. Sorry, but no matter how one looks at it, she was too young and even back then people thought it was wrong, otherwise it would not have been a scandal.
It was a scandal and he was blacklisted because people then did not agree it was ok because it was common or right. And as far as being common, only within the lower socio-economic groups was it accepted. This is a fact. I don't think the commenters realize that. The truth is, most girls married young for economic reasons, either it brought a young strong male into the family that could do heavy manual labor or he could provide for her taking the burden from her family. Myra was not wealthy but she was also not poor.
