I have a deeper level of respect for him after listening to this. I hope that changes are made. Keep pushing, Michael.

    "He couldn't get care"
Think about that? These guys play their best every single game and he couldn't get "Mental Health Care", not physical health care MENTAL health care. His life is a great example of the disparities between physical and mental health care world wide .
    THANK YOU MICHAEL PHELPS!

I remember seeing him at a quiet airport. He was walking with his head down and hands in his pockets, he seemed very shy and introverted.

Respectfully I disagree. There is a strength in knowing when to walk away and “quit”.

The problem is the way he was treated and his coaches exploiting his talent without caring about his development

We know Michael & Bob Bowman. During their competitive years together, this is so not true!

That’s so bizarre to hear that an Olympian like himself could not get help from any of the coaches or trainers from the training facility. There’s got to be a reason for this, or at least hope there is.

Iwas through depression but thank God is a thing of the past ,,I'm not an athlete but I'm winner....😊 Neck stiffness is one of the many symptoms,,,he needs to have his neck massaged daily,,my wife helped me a lot.

Yes neck, shoulders & back massages can really help with mental health problems. Do it as often as possible. Also foot reflexology can be useful too.

I hate to say this even though he's very well known but i think personally as to the reason he couldn't get any care of any sort was due to him not being in a mainstream sport and that goes for all the Olympic athletes with the exception of very very few sports (aka basketball)

Men need to talk about mental health a lot more. Phelps is a great illustration of mental illness in a highly successful person. However, I do worry about celebrities being poster children for mental disorders. Their success is so unrealistic and they do usually have better access to support like sports psychologists. Could these types of conversations be more balanced?

I understand the format of this interview is different by design. Not a critique of anyone here.
Shows like Hot Ones treat interviewees as people, and these treat them like sociopaths.

I strongly dislike the format here. Not very intimate for such a delicate and personal topic.

Kristen Welker really ruined this interview, It still means a lot to hear him say these things, and puts a good face on depression for young men to relate to, but i cant believe it ended with Welker trying to goad him into attacking the olympics administration. Phelps was actually doing some good , i wish they paired him with a better interviewer

There is alot of bullying in newscasts, commercials, sports hosts on sports programs and on the internet. 😂😂🎉It's alright to be ignorant toward a sane person like Robert Redford but it's a tinge bluer to a person who has managed knock on wood 🪵 depression. So the media ironically has to perhaps look inward.❤
