* * * IMPORTANT * * * : august 2022- india website does not ask you for the jurisdiction. vfs application will ask you. India webste created a form with washington dc office. on vfs i selected Atlanta (since thats my jusisdiction. they tool the $243 send my form back since india form said WDC and i sent it to Atlanta. Note says i have to redo all application and pay the application fee again. submitted the web refund request to VFS, not counting on it. now will try sending it to WDC by filling out WDC on vfs.
Did you get the refund back? Mine was declined and havent got it back yet. Saying wrong Jurisdiction. Got an email today saying that.
same with my application because I couldn't find Chicago jurisdiction and after walking in for interview they sent me back without helping or clarifying my doubts. Mine was Washington too

Hi Varun: Thank you for this informative video. You may have noticed that in the Government Application Form which assigns an ARN, the Passport Number column does not have an asterisk. So we did not fill it out because it is not mandatory. And of course the form was rejected. When completing the renunciation form, we enclosed a copy of the U.S. passport, as we had received it by then. It is the government seva site's omission that they do not have an asterisk against Passport Number. And some of the pages were returned not all, so a little sloppy. But yes when there is no asterisk, they should ask for additional information, not just cancel the application. We lost the fees including courier. Just saying it here so that others are aware, Just because there is no asterisk, do not ignore that column.

VFS Atlanta received my passport last Tuesday (Aug 3). I got my passport cancelled with the certificate today (Aug 11).

hey, one quick question. did you use notary stamp to prove that it is your documents? or did you just send it without the notary stamp?
Only affidavits as requested were notarized. All other docs were just signed

I have a question: Can an Indian citizen who got their US citizenship (naturalization) after 2010 apply for renunciation? I got my citizenship in 2018 but haven't applied for the renunciation yet. Can I apply for the renunciation now even if I got my US citizenship in 2018?
Also, I do not have a US passport since I haven't traveled out of the country for many years. In the renunciation certificate form where it requests US passport information (point #3: I have acquired US/Foreign nationality on ________ and consequently have obtained US/Foreign passport #: ________ dated ____________), can I leave these spaces blank since I do not have a US passport? Thank you.
Thank you for your comment. I feel you should get the US passport first, then do renunciation, then once you get your surrender certificate then apply for OCI.

Hi Varun, I have been thinking about doing this for a while and this video really helped me to get the wheels in motion. One question, I still don't have my US passport with me. Do I need to wait for it before I renounce Indian citizenship? It seems like US passport number is mandatory in the VFS application form.
Best is to wait yes. 😊 Once you have all the docs in place it will be easy to apply

VFS must be investigated by the Attorney Generals. Confiscating the fee for a simple error is highway robbery. Any other U*S business would be in deep trouble for doing such a thing.

@Yogi they mention where they need Indian passport info and foreign passport details. You do need your latest Indian passport info for sure.

Hello. Did you fill out renunciation certificate online? Or did you use pdf filler and followed the steps described in this video at 13:30 min ? When I click on the link it does not take to the pdf filler form, instead it takes me to vfs login and application page.

Has anyone know why VFS global fee is different for my aunt? Surrender Indian passport fee is approx £126 including their services.
But I was shocked when they gave me receipt £96.76
I went to Birmingham VFS global. Don't know why? My aunt got British nationality 3 months ago. She had only Indian passport till that date. How did they count fee? Or charge differently person to person?

To create an account (new user registration) on VFS Global, do we put our "Given name as per passport" as our first name? Or do we just put our "First Name" only?
@15:00 do you sign the solemn swear part even if you don't have kids? Is that independent of section 7? Also the below fields where you enter full name, phone number, address all aren't allowed my input with the PDF saying input too long after like 10 characters.

At my oath taking ceremony they willfully lied to me and said Indian citizenship will ne automatically canceled as you are now a USA citizen.

They didn’t lie. Getting other citizenship doesn’t instantly take care of paperwork. 🙏🏼 we still need to do the paperwork to tie the paperwork together and do it correctly. Glad it was helpful

For the Foreign Passport number, should I put the original first issued UK foreign passport number which is now expired? Or the most latest issued and currently valid UK passport number?

Hello, did they actually punch in holes for your Indian passport ? They sent mine with no punched holds but the cancelled stamp inside along with the renunciation cert.

The valid visas remain valid even after surrendering passport and can be used with new acquired citizenship/passport

Does the checklist have to be typed before printing or can we write on it?
2 copies for Renunciation/Surrender certificate to be signed and sent, they will give one back to you and one they will keep for records.
Hi Varun, I liked the video and it was informative. My expereience with this process has not been positive. The first time I sent the forms I had made the date format error once. VFS returned the entire form+documents and informed me that I had to do this all over again. They refunded only 20% of the total fee I had paid. This I thought was outrageous.The second time I was careful and resent them, I did not know that I had to recreate another profile in the VFS and pay the fee all over again. They rejected my application. They sent an email demanding that I send them a shipping label. They informed me they would shred the original documents after 7 days. Thisi has been surreal and totally arbitrary. Customer service is zero. I do not have kind words about this process. After spending over $200 I still do NOT have my surrender certificate. It has been a very unpleasant experience.
I applied lost surrender certificate in 2013, but I still have my Indian passport with stamp "Cancelled due to US citizenship" .. Is it enough proof for renunciation when applying for OCI?

Hi VK - Thanks for this Vlog. Its very informative. We are going through this process and have a quick question regarding number of the photos to be sent and whether to paste(glue) the photo on the form. As per the document check list we have to send out 2 photographs and copy of the government online form. The page 1 of the downloaded form has two boxes , one to paste a photo and another to sign it. Did you paste the photo on the form and then sent two more photos (so total 3 photos) or we do not need to paste the photo on the form and just send 2 photos , they would do the pasting. Thanks in advance!
Total is two photos, I clipped both with a paper clip on top of the govt form.

When I try to fill out the form under "TWO DULY FILLED AND SIGNED RENUNCIATION CERTIFICATE - ORIGINAL," it takes me to vfs home page instead of opening the form in the fillable pdf version. Am I doing something wrong?

Vk, Thank you for all the videos you post. They are very informative and makes our job easy. I have a question, my wife became US citizen through naturalization before June 2010. Her passport was stamped saying "cancelled due to acquiring foreign nationality".
She had an Indian tourism visa on her US passport on which she travelled to India.
Now we are in process of applying OCI for her. Do we need to obtain renunciation/surrender certificate in order to get OCI?
Also, can you explain if there is any difference between surrender and renunciation certificate?
Yes renunciation is a must for OCI.
Surrender and renunciation certificates are the same things.

I am filling according to Indian format but it automatically changes to mm/dd /year. And also I am entering the year 2022 but it shows only 20 and when I hover over it shows 2022. Plz let me know
Date format should be whatever works. Our last two digits to portray 2022 if it’s causing issues

Hi Vinisha, yes you will get the passport back with the stamp that its been surrendered, for name if changed, whatever is on your current name along with the Name change Affidavit of support

Hi what to write on field day of... on the renunciation certificate. And on bottom part when I type my email id and address then on printout it doesn't show the full information means shows only few words as fields are very small
Day of renunciation = day of naturalization (after oath ceremony)
I have a quick question, when filling out the renunciation certificate online, not all the information is displayed. Essentially what i mean is for certain columns in the form, for example like address : it can only hold so much information. After entering the information and when i try to print it out, the information is kind of cut off. Is it normal, is it acceptable? Do i need to use any specific software to fill out the form? Can i print it out and fill it by hand?
I printed it out and filled it out by hand due to the same reason. Please check with Embassy/VFS once so they are okay with this.

Foreign passport number I think since it gets tied to the new passport.

On VFS website, I completed form and went through pages and at the end, it generated the Renunciation Certificate, where I see 2 problems : (1) I, (Name), am of full age and capacity and was born at (Location), on Birthdate. In the Name field - It replaced with LAST Name, FIRST NAME. (2). On the Location, they replaced with State, City. Name is printed twice on the same page like this, while my father's full name is printed in correct order (First, Middle and Last name). I don't know whether this is mistakenly done or I filled up something wrong. I went back and reviewed my form again but looks everything correct. I don't want my application to get rejected. Please advise.
Can I apply both Renunciation certificate application and OCI application together? Or, do I need to have renunciation done first, wait for it and then apply for OCI? Please advise.
You cannot. You need to apply Renunciation first and once you have your renunciation/surrender certificate. You can apply for OCI.

For renunciation I put my US passport number
The renunciation form cuts off dates and letters throughout the form. For example the date of birth gets cut off at the end like 1/10/19.... The same goes with telephone, email, and address where it only shows the beggning but cuts off the end of it. How can I send it like this?

We print the shipping label from us to vfs. What about return shipping label from vfs to applicant..who prints that?
Yes paper clip is fine. Don’t staple.
For return shipping label if you paid VFS for prepaid shipping label. They will print it.

Give whatever you have given in US passport and supporting name change affidavit per checklist provided by Govt of India

Any document that supports that minor child being assigned would be the date I think.
Do we need to provide color print out of documents like Driving License for Address, Passport Information page etc? Is it ok if we just send the black and white print out copies of these documents? Will appreciate quick response. Thank you

If you need to travel soon, you should get visa (thats needed) If you are thinking of renouncing Indian citizenship, you will have a foreign passport right? Not sure why you need US visa. Im unclear on your question.
at 16:20 you said if Indian passport expires, but it says if you Naturalized after the date of expiry of latest Indian passport, which case mine wasn't. mine expired after i got US citizenship. so do i still need to do affidavit ?

Hi, I completed the "APPLICATION FORM FOR SURRENDER OF INDIAN PASSPORT" back in August but I did not fill out the vfs global application till now. Can I still use the same ARN number and form from August or should I reapply for SURRENDER OF INDIAN PASSPORT
If it crosses more that 30 days. You cannot use that now. You will need to do a new application and they send it to the Embassy through VFS

If you have not yet made payment for that ARN number on VFS payment site. You can do a new application and pay once for that.

You can ignore the old application. Just pay with VFS with new forms ARN number and you should be fine

I can’t comment on that buddy. Timing of travel and renunciation should have been done slightly far apart. Try contacting the Embassy/Consulate. But it shouldn’t be a problem I feel
So, to apply for renunciation, we should have applied and got the foreign passport along with naturalization certificate. Just having the naturalization certificate is not enough. We need to have the foreign passport in hand. Please correct me if this is not the case.

Naturalized after June 2010 does have a stamp or does not have a stamp. I am guessing they are asking about stamp on Indian passport right?

Best is to do it where the current passport is from. This won’t work I think

Only thing by appointment would be giving the physical application by hand instead of mailing it. If all those apply for mail then you are good.
My mother is British Protected person passport holder. I applied for her British Citizenship but they want a letter from Indian authorities that she is not and never was a citizen of india nor an oci holder and has never applied for it. I applied for it at high commission of India fro Tanzania but they said they are not allowed to issue such a letter according to citizenship act 1955. What should I do now ?

#1: yes, all applications are for individual persons!
#2: there are appropriate docs to be submitted for such cases mentioned on VFS site

Not through a pdf. It will be done via govt of India portal and allow you to print

The passport seva form and online VFS form need to be done online and then printout. The last two pages where you sign needs to be filled by hand
What is the date format on renunciation certificate? Is it dd/mm or mm/dd? Also, When I try to fill in the form, due to my long name it cuts it short. Any one else have a similar problem. Can I fill it out by hand. The instructions say No hand written forms. They really need to simplifying the application and give proper guidance
Agreed. Date format is india format. DD/MM/YY. It’s a little clunky I agree
On vfs website when trying to add new customer they have last name character limit for 13 characters only as appears in my passport my last name is longer than their limit. Should I split it or not type the whole last name?

You can wait for passport to arrive as they ask for US passport number ( not a mandatory field)You can apply as well if you don’t wait to wait.

Hi, at 13:30 you mention clicking on "Download the form". When I click here it does not take me to the pdf filler form. Instead, it takes me to vfs login page and once I login it only gives me options to create new application, retrieve incomplete application, etc. Is there any other way to get to the PDF form?
If that does not work, please get the form directly from the VFS link. there might be some issue with the link they added in the checklist. Also check the pinned comment by @Josh, he said that the certificated is to be filled online per new rules. So please follow that. Thank you

Stamp is visa stamps or canceled stamp for various reasons.

Thank you for asking this question. That form is by far the most frustrating part of this renunciation process. To call that document 'Renunciation Certificate' while you're applying for one makes it confusing. Add to that, the declaration part at the end is missing a word, this form reminds me of all the nightmares when I had to apply for a visit visa for my kids. I cant wait to start the OCI process and cry more.
