Say at 5-6 years age if an OCI card holder wants to surrender Canadian passport and acquire Indian passport, what are the steps and eligibility criteria?

      Hi Simon, do you already have OCI card? If yes my estimate is that if you fulfill the criteria it will be about 8-10 years from the time earlier till getting India passport. It could take longer if agencies feel they need more details.
      Regarding the point 2, by logic taking short business trip shouldn’t be a problem but long absence will. As when you are taking citizenship you have intention to stay(by logic)

Any such child may, within one year after attaining full age, make a declaration (in the prescribed form and manner) that he wishes to resume Indian citizenship and shall thereupon again become a citizen of India.

    I’m a South African citizen by birth, moved back permanently to India in 1997 when I was 11 months old. My parents are Indian, also I’m not registered as an overseas citizen. I’m 27 years old and I do have my updated South African ID and passport.

      Hi first step for Indian citizenship is to get OCI. Once you are registered as an OCI for 5 years and is residing in India for 1 year out of the above 5 years, you become eligible to apply for Indian Citizenship which can take another 3 years approx if all goes well. Hope this helps

    • @canadatriedandtestedoriginal
      @canadatriedandtestedoriginal  8 месяцев назад

      So in your case if you apply now and get OCI you need to wait for 5 years even if you are residing permanently in India and you can initiate after 5 years and then another 3 year’s turnaround.

Dhanyavadagalu 🙏

    • @canadatriedandtestedoriginal
      @canadatriedandtestedoriginal  Год назад

      Hi it’s a difficult question to answer. I will share what I have researched.
      1. With OCI card you will be just like Indian citizen except voting rights and government offices and buying agricultural land. When buying property if there are any tax subsidies given to Indian you might be at disadvantage(not a big factor though)
      2. With Canadian passport you will have travel flexibility to many countries and you can come to Canada anytime you wish.
      3. With regards to taxation as a resident I suggest having conversations with a good consultant to know about the impact especially when selling properties
      4. When you go visit any touristy locations you might end up paying more on entry fee if asked for ID
      5. Health insurance in India is something you will have to check. How the premiums impact
      If you ask me there is no advantage or disadvantage. It’s what you want and what you don’t want. Many who are accustomed to newer things of life coming out of India find difficult to adjust and that has been one of the reason people say not to leave the option you have.
      If you want to become Indian citizen again, in my research it’s a 10 year turnaround time approx. I have shared the video too
      Hope this helps

      Hi Bhargav, in your case based on the input you can initiate the process anytime now. The India documentation process you can expect (it’s my guess work atleast between 2-3 years, it can even be shorter) and then renouncing Irish citizenship timeframe will depend on Ireland processing time. Like in Canada it could take up to 1 year and in US individual have to physically meet before renouncing. There after you can expect 2-3 months to get with India passport etc. Hope this helps. Congratulations and happy to see you take this decision. All the best

    Just to reconfirm. My baby is born in Canada in 2023 so if I want to renounce Canadian citizenship and get Indian citizenship for the baby keep in view that both the parents are still Indian citizen but are in Canada on a PR is it possible. I had also visited the Indian embassy in Toronto and they are saying that you can renounce the Canadian citizenship for the baby and first apply for Indian DOB certificate and once its approved by MHA then you can apply for Indian passport. However, on the other hand IRCC official website and customer service says that you cannot renounce the citizenship for a minor in Canada. If you apply your application will be rejected. Then on what ground Indian consulate is saying that you can get Indian citizenship for a baby born in Canada.

    First of all, many thanks for such an informative video. we are going to have a baby soon and most probably next year we will be permanently going back to India (I am currently having canadian closed work permit).
    Now I have 4 questions--
    1. how to register the baby as Indian citizen by descendant? I heard within 12 months of birth we need to register the same.
    2. I don't want that after going back to India he/she will be facing so many restrictions as discussed in your video. How to solve that?
    3. If I register the child as Indian citizen by descendant then can he/she get Indian passport from canada only?
    4. Suppose I am travelling to India post his/her birth and then coming back again to Canada so I need to raise any canadian visa for him/her or canadian birth certificate will suffice.
    Really sorry in advance if I ask any silly question here.. I am totally confused regarding this.Please also guide me the suitable path based on my situation.

      Now India does not recognize dual citizenship however Canada does so when you apply for India citizenship for your baby you will have to give declaration to GOI that the baby will not hold any other passport. You can do your due diligence to find more info. Since baby is born in Canada, Canada will still consider as Canadian citizen only thing you won’t have is Canadian passport. When the baby turns 18 years old he/she will have choice to take up Canadian passport and in this case go through the India citizenship surrender process as I have made the video. Congratulations for good times ahead

      Hi did your parents have Indian citizenship? India does not give citizenship by birth for foreign nationals (parents who are foreign nationals and were in India)

      @@canadatriedandtestedoriginal no sir my mom is a sri lankan and my dad is US immigrant citizen (before he was a Sri lankan citizen) but I was born and lived for 18 years in India, and had my schooling life in India ,but now I'm in sri lanka for 2 years ,I badly miss India 🥲🗿. Thanks for the video, very useful information.
    I've applied for citizenship as an OCI card holder on the website and submitted the documents to the District Collector's office as well and the status on the citizenship website was updated to "Application received" a few days after submitting the documents.
    It's been 2 weeks since then, can you please provide information on the next steps after that? Thanks.
