I had a gig a while back as a production assistant for a mobile recording studio that did a lot of live recordings of black gospel groups performing in churches in and around Durham, NC. Minus the choreography and high jumping, this was a pretty accurate portrayal of the atmosphere. Those churches ROCKED.

I was in Ghana for Christmas 20 years ago. There was no tree or gifts exchanged but you spent the day in church rejoicing then gathered for a feast. I met over 200 relatives at that dinner. The love and joy expressed at our visit was extraordinary and the church service was amazing, rejoicing and singing to the lord on the day of his birth. My mother left Ghana in the 50's, it has become the only country so far in Africa that welcomes the descendents of slaves... no visa required. In three years you can become a citizen. Opportunity abounds and I couldn't be prouder.
As a child growing up, this was always me and my siblings favorite scene. We 100 percent identified with the music, the choir, the preacher, and the members dancing "in the spirit". Still love this movie after all these years.
Still have the contemporaneous memory of _this_ scene seeing it for the first time in July 1980. Halfway, or so, through the movie a thunderstorm erupted and while rain pelted the roof and the theater shook from thunderclaps The Blues Brothers played on. My wife and I were beginning our summer vacation. After the movie was over we left the cool theater and the blast of heat and humidity outside was a tangible 'thing'.
I’m only 28 years old and I watch this movie almost everyday my dad introduced me to this movie thank god he did and we dressed as the blues brother one Halloween and I introduced my friends to this movie we all love this movie wish we had more movies just like the blues brothers today

All of these great artists were at lulls in their careers, when disco was king and people weren't quite as up for people like Aretha, Ray, Cab Calloway, Hooker, and even JB. The producers got them all for a pittance, but it helped revive their careers.
"Have you seeeen the light?" "Yes! Yes! Jesus H. Tap-dancing Christ! I have seeeen THE LIGHT!!!" I went to a very conservative religious boarding school when I was a kid. We had Church services everyday and three on a Sunday! We were allowed to bring in one VHS movie once a month and everyone had to sit down and watch it. When it was my turn I brought in this movie. It was the clean version (taped off the tv) with all the 'mf's' edited out. Once it started the teacher on duty clearly had a problem with it being appropriate for 8 - 13 year old boys, but couldn't really speak up because the film was about saving an orphanage run by a Nun and was about two men on 'a mission from God'.😂 Some of those kids were so excited by the end car chase that they were screaming and shouting and some were even riding their chairs with excitement as they cheered on Jake and Elwood. There was almost a riot! I like to think I broadened a few minds that day and planted a few seeds. An anti-authority classic. Still my all time favorite movie.
I just sent this to my drummer, who has not graced our band with his skills in some time. But last night we got the band back together for a little bit, and it was almost a religious experience. Thanks, Jeremy, love ya bro!
What happened in these churches (not sure if it was the goal), is that your defenses were broken down so “the light” could enter in. (Like Belushi.) It’s hard not to internally respond to that incredibly blistering tempo, that call and response , and the hardcore repetition of it all. It’s mesmerizing! So simple. Everybody gets it. The leader says something and the whole room answers back. Over and over. Same simple lines. By the time it’s over, you’re not the same as you walked in. A wonderful gift God gave to those who call upon the name of Christ. It got us through! Additionally…. All black music, Jazz and Blues predominantly, comes from this. I was overwhelmed in the theater when I saw it. James Brown Chaka Khan … This scene was bananas !
I must say I have been in churches where the presence of GOD touch the people. It's one of the most awsome , new, joyful experiences. I have never been the same.
