That's one of my favorite gags in comedy movie history: He throws the lighter out the window at the beginning, then at the end after he decides the car is okay to keep he says "fix the cigarette lighter". It's such a small thing, but it shows how detailed the joke-writing was.

Ackroyd and Belushi have great comedic chemistry, and they aren't half-bad musicians, either. But we must never forget the whole purpose of this movie was to introduce a new American generation to the best R&B ever, played by the original artists.

One of the things that makes “The Blues Brothers” my all time favorite comedy is the complete lack of inhibition from the film makers. I think a big factor in how well a movie works is how seriously it takes itself compared to how seriously it SHOULD take itself. Movies often fail because of a large gap between the two. But the people who made "The Blues Brothers" knew how ridiculous the movie was, decided to just have a blast being ridiculous, and it works spectacularly.

The best part about this movie is that the idea of the Blues Brothers is completely absurd. The entire premise of the movie and everything that happens in it is insane. But the Elwoods, they're almost expressionless. In a movie that surrounds them in ridiculous chaos at which they are the center, they're the calm center. Like the eye of a hurricane.
Anyone who knows the trope of the straight-laced white blues guy knows exactly where this premise came from.
