After Ziggy, Bowie matured and got smoother; but I don't think he ever replicated the excitement and raw energy he created with the Spiders from Mars. Ronno, Trevor and Woody - what a powerhouse!
+Mickey Vidakovich Wow! Hope you saved the ticket stub. My older sister wanted me to sneak out of the house to go see Ziggy, I think I was 9 or 10, but I was too scared of mom's wrath so we didn't go. Sure wish I went, even though I have seen many Bowie concerts over the years, first one was in '74 or '75. He will be missed by many.
Agree. The mid 70s was also a great time to be in high school!!! I had 5 older siblings (greasers and hippies) who were all record collectors, so I grew up w/ music/dancing ... and did the same for my 2 sons who are now 29 and 30.
Mick Ronson bends his guitar around the universe like no other man was he amazing I was at this concert and was it incredible and very emotional too, nothing like this any more.
now that, my friends, is video evidence of what it means to be a 'guitar hero'.. mick was soooooo good, sooooo cool and most of all an incredible guitarist with an incredible guitar sound... he set the cool bar so very high. RIP Mick.
Great Riffs by Mick Ronson (really has that Punk feel to it) and the song was written in 1972 before the first wave of Punk with the Ramones, Clash, Damned, Buzzcocks and Pistols. David Bowie had so many styles of music throughout his career, the Man is Genius !!!
One of my favourite songs by David Bowie but then there wasn't much amongst David's early music that wasn't a favourite. The best thing that ever happened to Bowie is that he hooked up with Mick Ronson. The Spiders from Mars was one of the tightest bands of that era and the best. I listened to my sister's copy of The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust in 1972 and was hooked (and kept her album). Lost interest in David after Diamond Dogs.
The poor Spiders. Although nobody really twigged, they were actually a supergroup. They just didn't play boring deep meaningful stuff like the other "Supergroups." The Spiders really were a devastatingly talented three piece.
Ronno was the most underrated guitarist - I was privileged to see the tour for Slaughter On 10th Avenue and man, could he play!! oh, and he could sing pretty good too...thanks for posting!
Mick has been one of my favorites of all time , took balls to play with Bowie ! He was great and never got that recognition that he deserved! loved him in mott the hoople . man could make some great sounds with a guitar ! why do the good ones die young ?? thanks for positive post !
Bowie was just expressing himself, he wasn't trying to outdo everyone with outrageousness. But that's fairly observant of you, he certainly did break many unspoken rules.
Same here, probably longer, I saw them in Bristol on this tour and I have never witnessed anything like it. The crowd were one mindset, all on the same wavelength, it was absolute worship. Saw Mick and the Spiders after they split up, when he did that opening riff to Moonage Daydream the whole place erupted.
I was privileged to see the next best thing than being there: a 50 year anniversary film of the very last Ziggy Stardust at the Spiders from Mars concerts, -at the Hammersmith on July 3rd, 1973- was shown at AFI in DC the other night. 103 minutes long, including back stage filming of Bowie changing outfits, chatting with the makeup girl. Just a brilliant film/show. Man could those guys rock and Bowie was mesmerizing and so precise in his movements. Numerous close-ups of his face; those eyes were something else. But as many others have remarked, I couldn't believe how good Ronson was! In their encore set, Jeff Beck joined them onstage to also play with Ronson and they performed Gene Genie and a Chuck Berry tune that allowed them to really jam; Bowie was on the harmonica! Whole thing blew me away.
I saw him on the same tour in May in Blackburn. Cant describe the feeling ..........14 year old absolutely amazed. I still love him and especially the memories from 1973. thanks for this bit of my Ziggy, lol xxx
This IS rock 'n' roll. An electrifying start and Ronson makes that Les Paul sing...saw this video when I was a kid....man, makes some impression. No going back !
::: 40 years after this show. 20 years ago my former girlfriend copied a VHS of the film to a sonyBetamax tape for me to watch it. I love you, Pilar, wherever you are.
Whoa,,, how cool,,, The strobe light effect on all the young , adoring Fans is fun to watch,,, Do ya think that band had Groupies after the show,,,?...haha
That Mick Ronson would go on to back Bob Dylan on the Rolling Thunder tour is mind boggling. That said, the version of Isis they do during that tour is as rocking as it comes.
+Mr C Ronson not only made Bowie rock, but brought a masculinity to Bowie that the latter had not had before or after the two paired up. Bowie would go on to brilliant things post-Spiders, as he matured and evolved as an artist, and he would cover musical ground far more interesting and experimental than his Ronson days, but became devoid of the edge and rawness that he had possessed during his time with the Spiders. For example, just listen to the 1974 live shows promoting Diamond Dogs...it became much more schmaltzy and theatrical and bloated.
+mazzy stargaze look up Spiders from Mars interview. Quite sad how Bowie treated the band. I love DB but after seeing that interview my respect has gone down a bit and lessened my sadness about him passing. It's so sad how he treated the boys from Spiders from Mars.
Susan Meeters I saw the interview and I understand what you're saying but it also looks to me that they've all mended bridges.Years have passed and they held no grudges towards him."Water under the bridge forgiven forgotten" Though it saddens me that Bowie didn't stay with the band and I'm not taking up for him but I believe one of the reasons why they were bound to break up was because of poor management. In another interview I can't remember the title but during the Ziggy tours truth came out that Bowie's manager stiffed them. Can't really pay them when there's no money to give. And it led to tensions within the band. I do wish they could've stayed together, I would've love to see them venture out. How far they could go or what they could've been. They could've been up there like Queen or The Rolling Stones or whoever else. David needed the band , they were the backbone in producing many great songs. It kills me to that about all the awesome possibilities they could've had had they stayed together. But I still like Bowie though, I just wish he would've kept the band.
Iggy & the Stooges were there too. But the riffs in Hang On To Yourself I can hear with the Ramones, the Clash and Pistols which came out later in the 70's. Very Cool song !!!
Meh, The Clash were a fine band but I'd never put them ahead of The Ramones. Even Joe Strummer wouldn't have put The Clash ahead of The Ramones. The Ramones and The Clash were kinda like The Beatles and The Stones. The Ramones sound, style, and performance was there for YOU....as if they were your buddies. The Clash was "distant"...not a band I could ever feel a true personal connection to.
+Steve O I think as a live performer, the Ronson era was, undoubtedly, his finest moment. I love the forays into plastic soul, krautrock, avant-pop and experimental music, as well as the crooner voice change, but Bowie lost his edge post-Spiders and that rawness during the Spiders era was sorely missed when he played these things songs live in later decades.
Nevermind. My comments often go missing! Three amigos. Janice Clarke, Janette Collier and myself at Newcastle City Hall. My top coming open down in the mosh pit and giving the Bowie an eyeful. Lol We missed the last train back to Billingham and had to spend the night in the Railway Station. No coats on either. That's Northerners for ya!
After Ziggy, Bowie matured and got smoother; but I don't think he ever replicated the excitement and raw energy he created with the Spiders from Mars. Ronno, Trevor and Woody - what a powerhouse!
All of the coming punk sounds in one song...from 1972 no less. Genius.
All and MORE!
that's mick ronson for ya
That's exactly what I was thinking as I was watching this! Plus some more classic R&R solo too just to round it out.
The riff from which The Ramones were created.
Ronson's guitar sound. Is it possible not to love it?
+LittleGodOfThunder The answer is a definite NO! :-)
I saw this show in 72. I'm 93 now. I'm so glad I went. Seeing this brings back so much.
+Mickey Vidakovich Wow! Hope you saved the ticket stub. My older sister wanted me to sneak out of the house to go see Ziggy, I think I was 9 or 10, but I was too scared of mom's wrath so we didn't go. +Cathy T I have saved all of my stubs - mostly 1980s concerts in Chicago - I did see Bowie in Serious Moonlight tour but this would have been awesome
I saved all mine as well from 100s of shows; 1st one being Alice Cooper Billion Dollar Babies tour... I'm in Chicago too.
Agree. The mid 70s was also a great time to be in high school!!! I had 5 older siblings (greasers and hippies) who were all record collectors, so I grew up w/ music/dancing ... and did the same for my 2 sons who are now 29 and 30.
+Mickey Vidakovich And I'm 150 years old and I didn't even see it!
Mick Ronson bends his guitar around the universe like no other man was he amazing I was at this concert and was it incredible and very emotional too, nothing like this any more.
True, but Bowie was not thrilled about the competition.
I LOVED them so much!!!
Died and came back when Mick Ronson invited us into their hotel room for SPAGHETTI!!
now that, my friends, is video evidence of what it means to be a 'guitar hero'.. mick was soooooo good, sooooo cool and most of all an incredible guitarist with an incredible guitar sound... he set the cool bar so very high. RIP Mick.
What a guitarist
This whole gig was unbelievable. Ronson is the man.
Great Riffs by Mick Ronson (really has that Punk feel to it) and the song was written in 1972 before the first wave of Punk with the Ramones, Clash, Damned, Buzzcocks and Pistols. David Bowie had so many styles of music throughout his career, the Man is Genius !!!
agree
Alan Ferdman always thought there was something very ‘punky’ about the spiders and indeed Ziggy himself
Maybe MC5 before I thing 1969.
Mick Ronson Respect
No dude this song was written much earlier than 72. Bowie recorded an earlier version of this same song with Arnold Corns band.
One of my favourite songs by David Bowie but then there wasn't much amongst David's early music that wasn't a favourite. The best thing that ever happened to Bowie is that he hooked up with Mick Ronson. The Spiders from Mars was one of the tightest bands of that era and the best. Yes they were..absolutely magic!! ✊👏👏
You can't even imagine how much i miss you both . Thank you for the magic , for everything . RIP Mick and David . I love you .
Ronno was the most underrated guitarist - I was privileged to see the tour for Slaughter On 10th Avenue and man, could he play!! oh, and he could sing pretty good too...thanks for posting!
One of music's best combos - Bowie & Ronson! I just can't get enough...
Fair play, Mick Ronson is unbelievable. But a word for Trevor and Woody who lay one hard as f@*k rhythm down here
Got this on DVD. Mick is the real deal. Forget Clapton, Townsend and may. This man is the real deal. Watch, Listen & Learn.
R.I.P - David Bowie truly a rock icon, you will be sorely missed.
Ronno. Guitar God.
Mick has been one of my favorites of all time , took balls to play with Bowie ! He was great and never got that recognition that he deserved! loved him in mott the hoople . man could make some great sounds with a guitar ! why do the good ones die young ?? thanks for positive post !
Mick Ronson was the man. This performance is so good.
Ronson was so brilliant!
This is so damn great, the best Bowie period...
RIP Bowie and Ronson!
It's surreal that Bowie invented Punk in 1971 way before Sex Pistols and Ramones and everybody else.
Iggy & the Stooges were around the same time too.
Bowie was just expressing himself, he wasn't trying to outdo everyone with outrageousness. But that's fairly observant of you, he certainly did break many unspoken rules.
+lucoia Mick Ronson created the riff
Yes, Iggy really was the earliest. 1968 at Grande Ballroom Detroit. Crazy, crazed stuff.
the sonics in 1965 invented punk rock
Mick Ronson is simply AWESOME!!!!
I have been watchng this concert for the last 20 years! I wish I could have been there!
Bewley Brother

i saw him play "the glass spider tour" in mid 80's..siouxsie and the banshees opened..was amazing
I saw him on the same tour in May in Blackburn. Cant describe the feeling ..........14 year old absolutely amazed. I still love him and especially the memories from 1973. thanks for this bit of my Ziggy, lol xxx
MY BOWIE MY HERO.....
🌟🌟🌟 MICK RONSON 🌟🌟🌟
Bowie influenciando o punk com o ótimo Mick Ronson. Ele era sem dúvida o maior artista da música que já existiu!!
One of my favorite guitarists. Mick had a distinct sound. RIP Mick. Thanks for the video.
It's been a painful couple of weeks. First Scot Weiland, then Lemmy Kilmeister now Bowie.
Yes it was !
Genial!!!Bowie dando o estilo ao punk que viria anos depois!!Mick Ronson top!!!
Genius in music ... Bowie + Ziggy + Spiders + original lyrics = eternal great job.
I could watch this all day every day and it still wouldn't tire. Coolness personified, Ronno and Bowie are too cool for skool in this vid
This IS rock 'n' roll. An electrifying start and Ronson makes that Les Paul sing...saw this video when I was a kid....man, makes some impression. No going back !

The whole band were genius. Woody Woodmansey and Trevor Bolder were phnomenal
Trevor Boulder like Bruce Entwistle monster player 💥

Well Said. Can't argue with the governor and the maestro's from Hull.
without bowie, punk would not exist
Sounds great. Loved how you replaced the audio from the film with the track from the CD.
Guauuu Mick Ronson
Your right : )
Bowie made a big mistake splitting from Ronson, that man made his sound!
yeah what's the story behind that? ronson knows how to play a guitar i wonder what happened?
+Mr C Ronson not only made Bowie rock, but brought a masculinity to Bowie that the latter had not had before or after the two paired up. Cornerstone of punk

Wow. It's punk rock. There's a Ramones song that sounds just like this.
Etana Edelman teenage lobotomy
I dont wanna go down to the basement by the ramones

By 1972, music was losing it's way - prog rock shite predominated then up steps Bowie and reclaims rock 'n' roll right there.....electrifying stuff.
This is PUNK. bowie just did everything first :)
