The TRUE Power of MMOs! - WoW Can Learn From This...

- When we talk about MMOs and what makes them great, often we can fall into the trap of getting obsessed with systems and gameplay - when the biggest part of what makes an MMO unique is the social aspect; a massive world with other players in it and FF really delivers on that.
Last week PG Team member Bex along with our infamous FC The Crawlers put together a stage production of A Realm Reborn and Mike LOVED it.

When talking about MMOs it can often feel like its all about systems - but its the people that really make those games special. Bex and the Crawlers did an incredible job putting on this production. If you want to see the uncut version with a look behind the scenes you can do so here: ruclips.net/video/EVTz1RlaDrU/видео.html . Also apologies for the alerts - I tried to cover them up as best I could but only so much I can do with mike moving his POV around :)
P.S. Listen to Hydaelyn, why not pick up an original Preach Gaming displate, or some merch...

Is it just me or are there some weird transition issues going on, where the transition fade stays behind a few seconds?
While they are creepy as fuck sometimes, your FC is something special mate.
@@COA5T I think thats the cleaning up from the sub alerts mentioned as a disclaimer at the beginning, given the sub alerts show up in that area
@@Fouweior ah...makes sense!
The crawlers are ABSOLUTELY part of what made Mike stick around, they are an absolute inspiration of a Free Company / Guild
Did they preexist and adopt him or form around him?
@@danh8804 A little of both. They formed roughly around the time he started playing (the name is based on a running joke from his New World streams), but he didn't join until a month or two in.
There is no reason any other MMO can't have this. This was the coolest thing I've seen since experiencing my first introduction to MMO's over 20 years ago in EQ. This was like watching the Oscars of MMO's.
One thing I miss the most about Asmon’s FF stream is actually his friends that he played with. He has Dom, not just a meme but he is a really good player and always there for the team. Sea Lion is like his left hand person if Dom is the right. Void Bunny helped him arrange a lot of community stuffs etc. They are all nice people with their own unique traits like Preach’s friends here.
Same but we have now gambling and watching a celebrity trial and torghast runs, and rallying the right wingers and the lefties with how big Musk is gonna unban Trump and it will be funny for the memes, fuck real world consequences, so much more content /s.
His content lately has taken such a nosedive. I watch him for escapism, not the daily reminder that we live in a shit society. His stream, he can float it how he wants. It's just super dissapointing. FF was so fun, now he's just a Hassan/XqC combo knockoff.
Asmon has shown over the past few days he's fully mazed and will never break free.
Dom is unironically an Ultimate-tier player on his main char, afaik.
Not a fan of streamer suck-ups, but he has the skills to actually back his orbiting up rather than being a mediocre player who is pretending to be a big shot in order to be picked to guide "mr streamer" around.
@@DraphEnjoyer he talked about playing ff14 again next week lol, chill
One thing I love about FFXIV is that they understand the importance of putting in fluff that the community doesn't NEED per se. It's just for fun. Squeenix does an amazing job of putting things at your fingertips and saying, "Have a blast."
more like the team working a ffxiv, hell I'm pretty sure they are the ones keeping square in a leash and not fucking the game.
@@flzerocs youp the Store was added as a deal with SE for Yoshi to have full creative control of XIV
Meanwhile over at Blizzard they just put women's asses at their fingertips and have a blast.
Who knew all Mike needed was a little RP to bring joy back into his life?
A little fantasy, i.e escapism can be good for a person
plus a redhead wife that enjoys his work too
Funny that he always shat on it in WoW
@@Wellshem our boi Mike has come along way
@@Wellshem he didn't shat on it. If anything he mentioned multiple times he was jealous on the amount of fun they had but couldn't understand.
Not sure if anyone has mentioned this, but just like the nightclubs, there are full blown theater troupes that put on monthly plays and have tryouts and all that. For instance, on my home center, the Stellazzio Virtual Theater on Diabolos is absolutely amazing and tough as nails to get into a show. Not saying what The Crawlers did wasnt fab, but I think it would be a nice experience for Mike to do an interview with a local troupe and get an idea on what they do, the planning etc etc. Plus I love that part of the community and think a little spotlight on what they do would be nice.
Oh I have been to a few of their plays, and they are really amazing ^_^
Wait... those nightclubs aren't all just erp fests? What have I been missing out on?
@@KohenChia I've got a hardline stance on absolutely zero spicy RP and love going to clubs. It's fun to go, toss on a dance emote, chat with folks, and do some people watching. I highly encourage giving it a try!
I remember when A Stage Reborn was on Diabolos. I haven't seen this new group at all, I guess I just haven't been on at the right times. It seems like my world just specializes in plays.
@@KohenChia they're really not. A new apartment neighboir convinced me to visit one with her because I'd just finished raids and was stressed. A lot of people just go there to hang out and listen to the twitch DJ. Yes there's more flirty and erp heavy venues, but a lot of it isn't that, or they tell you an icon to use to let ERPers know to leave you alone.
This was truly amazing work. The props, lightning, and sound. Everything was top notch. Good Job.
I've taken a page out of your FC's book to accompany my friend across the MSQ, waiting for them around the corner, in appropriate glam, emoting away, and it definitely enhances the experience a ton. It was such a joy to watch you go through the MSQ entirely, and I definitely hope the Crawlers continue a series of plays over time! This was ridiculously fun and amazing to watch. :3
Ok but when the crystal tower decoration started going “Hear…Feel…Think…” I lost my shit lol
Time stamp? Sorry not home at the moment and I wanna see that part lol

Still waiting for the videos on Preach's thoughts/experience with Emet-Selch and Thancred/Ryne during ShB. One day they will be created, one day. Until then, these other videos are like nice appetizers.
Same here!
I'm waiting for "all the vids". I didn't even know who Preach was until he came over to FF14 and he has become my favorite content creator. Everyday I refresh RUclips hoping for a new video, only to be blue balled week after week.
And Endwalker video too 💙👌
Saaame
The only thing i can say watching his stream is he love shadowbringer and endwalker
I'm stuck at home, sick with that virus that shall not be named, and this had me in stitches. Your FC are top notch people, and this was outstanding. I sincerely hope they do another one.
thank you so much for sharing this.
The play they did was absolutely nuts. I loved watching the VOD for it, and you paying tribute to it like this is exactly the RP reward we look for.
If you guys are on Primal DC, there's a group that does full recreations of The Nutcracker every winter as much as one can via dedicated bards and tightly choreographed emotes. It's a wonder how well they do with the tools available.
One of my favorite groups in FF history is Tantalus, a legendary band of thieves that masquerade as a theatre troupe. When I watched the Crawlers do their play for Mike, it really...I don't know, it gave me joy. Part of me wishes Mike has played FF9, he'd make a damn good Baku.
Man, this game really does allow you so much freedom in what you want to do, that's frankly just amazing that entire Theatre shows are a thing you can do in this game.
Damn this is great! As a wowfugee that has followed Preach for years, it's great to see Mike so happy and enjoying his time in FF. Thanks for sharing this video!
I cannot wait to see the sequel including the award-winning Heavensward expansion up to level 60 for FREE with no restrictions on playtime!
This was far more masterful than it seems on the surface. To say FFXIV's placement tools are rudimentary is like saying a fusion reactor gets a little hot (also see "the table lamp incident").
That was seriously excellent, great job crawlers - you're all absolutely bonkers... and awesome :)
My FC creates entire D&D campaigns and plays them out in-game. In fact we just finished a story campaign that lasted two years! We also run a bounty office where people can come in and RP picking out bounties, which are essentially writing prompts for further tabletop-esque adventures. RPing in FFXIV is what got me into actual D&D, and it’s given me the opportunity to DM encounters where I might never have had the chance before.
I love the content of FFXIV but I stay subbed for the RP. It’s the RPers that keep the game going during content lulls.
While I don't really like FF14, I tried it but it's not my thing... Im honestly impressed by the play, you can control escenes and lights and all of that? that's amazing
Is not easy lmty... The sheer amount of production, management,etc...
I don't really get to tune into Preach's streams very often due to his schedule but I happened to be there for this and the behind the scenes stuff was genuinely pretty nuts. It's incredibly impressive that they could execute it as fluently as they did here.from what I can remember the whole thing took a LOT of practice.
I never really did much with the housing stuff, my fc did have one but it wasn't really me thing at the time, so I can't really comment on how easy or difficult it is to move stuff around, but from what I can remember, there was a bunch of props just stacked inside a wall behind the scenes and they moved it around manually when it was needed. so if my understanding is correct, each set was literally built from scratch between every scene change.
This is all just how I interpreted what they showed and talked about after the performance so if I got anything wrong, people may feel free to correct me.
@@SondreGrneng As someone who do housing and has used addons, you can set parameters to objects. So they knew where to put the items with XYZ coordinates and just write or memorize what to use.
@@Rhymeruru believe they explained that they set up each set, like a group, and moved them all behind the stage and would move each scene up when the curtains were down
The attention to details, the script, etc. Very well done, a round of applause for these talented people 30:35. Big ideas come from here like: more tools to create your own in-game adventures, imagine a fully customizable area with player-designed content. It is not a new idea but the challenge is to implement it in FFXIV.
Crystal has a lot of events like this, even famous groups in the community, etc.
There is gonna be such a culture shock for the other data centers on NA once data center travel is available lol. Aether and Primal people go to Crystal and see all the community events like this.
I can't wait for cross realm data travel so I can visit all these communities
I know this is crazy for RUclips, but maybe people should watch the video before commenting. Or at least skip to the end to see his thoughts on why and how something like this adds to the social aspect of the game, and that it's NOT just his FC/experience.
Ah, but that would be a sensible thing to do... :D
Of course it adds to the social aspect of the game :) It's generally a good thing for an mmo to be more social
blown away, what an absolute treat this was. Your FC/Friends out done themselves. Sharing this with many of my friends atm.
It sucks you have to break the ToS just to have speech bubbles... but it's literally one of my fav pluginis, I don't even RP but crafting in limsa and seeing the speech bubbles above peoples heads is awesome, or seeing everyone at the end of an S rank saying thanks is humbling... it's one thing seeing it in the chat box but something completely different with bubbles.
I really hope they take a good look at a lot of the QoL plugins and implement them.
It's a very underrated and kind of annoying thing. T they're very anti addon. I have a visual impairment, the chat box compared to bubbles is awful, I need to zoom in insanely close just to be able to read it, while bubbles are bigger the closer I am and such. They should either add an option themselves or chill tf out on their ToS restrictions IMO.
heres hoping it is a built in option soon
@@IceRoss This. It's one of those things (like better bag searching) that just makes you go "Why isn't it baseline yet?"
They're as chill as they can be. They have to say "dont use them" from a business perspective, to protect their IP. Take ACT for example; they tell you dont use it, but they cant stop you and cant do anything to you unless you're being super toxic and bragging about it on forums/other social media. Dont be a dick and dont brag about using them and you're safe as houses.
@@KumaNicol To be perfectly fair, they've gone on record numerous times saying they really don't care about add-ons like that, they just don't want combat based add-ons. Hell, they regularly hold "modified" screenshot contests, in which damn near every entrant is quite blatantly using shader mods.
Another fantastic part of the social side in XIV is how you get to know people in the game. You see them a few times, maybe wave or do an emote, start talking and eventually you have a +1 on your friends list. I made more friends in 14 in 10 months than 10 years in WoW. I see most of them daily and I love the bond we have. Not to mention the 2 wonderful groups of people I raid savage and ultimate with. The other games may beat FF in other aspects but nothing will ever come close to it's social vibrance. I have literally spent hours of my playtime emoting and just having fun with random people and I love this community.
when i was levelling ocean fishing theres this viera always dancing on top of the barrel next to the ship. probably waiting for the 2hr window.
a couple of days later, only a minute left to the window the viera came running in. probably running late. so i shouted "why no dancing?" then they proceed to dance for us
seems like the other people too noticed the dancing viera from their reactions
Minfilia stopping to check her phone had me wheeze laughing. Such a well done play and can tell they had a lot of fun with it. Thank you for this!

Absolutely insane how well done this was! The Crawlers are just amazing and I salute you all!
OMG This is so good! Amazing work from the FC.
My FC is no where near the size of the Crawlers but they have still done things like cosplay contests on stage and such. I love the social experience FF offers and finding out WoW wasn't going to be expanding into that with their next expansion killed the interest I had in it. Such a waste.
My FC is a lot smaller and still we managed to pull off some events by usinng the housing and chat options. For example, once we had an RP battle contest, one person made a battle ring arena in the basement and we had a judge.
People battled by typing whatever they wanted in chat (some intricate text to explain what they are doing), and then the judge would do /random to determine the dmg dealt. We decided ahead of time which numbers meant the attack missed, hit for 1-3 points, or did a critical.
Anyway you can do wtvr you want in this game with some imagination and company :)
This was amazing to watch and you can definitely tell the care and attention to detail that went into recapturing Preach's ARR experience! You're right! MMOs are the only kind of game that can do something like this. I eagerly look forward to the next chapter!
I would like to add: Videos like this are the ones shared around at the CBU3 studio all the way up to Yoshi-P - they LOVE seeing this stuff more than anything else. So I hope this gains traction and finds its way like that because this is what the game TRULY thrives on in the long run.
This was better than I expected. There’s something pretty wholesome about all of this.
This, truly was, nothing short of an incredible example of a feature of FFXIV that is available that is truly undervalued and appreciated!
I absolutely loved this - it was absolutely and wonderfully creative! I fell in love with XIV a long time ago and am always overjoyed to see people fall in love and enjoy their experience in Eorzea. I hope you continue to enjoy your time here, Preach, and everyone else beginning or continuing their journey.
Just to let people know here in the comments:
RP guild's aren't some special secret club. Y'all can get in on similar action in just about every MMO. Hell even OSRS has had some neat community events. Just join one like you would any other guild
That would require effort on their part.
Our FC had hosted fashion shows, talent shows, potd races, crafting contests and so much more. The sky is the limit with what you can do in this game and that is what keeps me subscribed to it.
ok, this was the best thing i have EVER seen someone doing in FF 14, so well done and organized!
U are very lucky to have such a great FC.
I watched the uncut video and had to watch this too. Still amazing watching it for the second time. I loved it. You guys did an amazing job! ❤️
Absolutely loved the ad placement ;D, great job as ever Chris!
This is the one thing that FFXIV does by far better than any other MMO. The game feels lived in. You can just hang out and be your character. You don't have to be the chosen one all the time. Heck I know of many people in my FC that don't even level up except to get a glamour and they spend about 99% of their time just living in the game.
Yep this is what the game is amazing at for sure
I'm not into anime or weeby looking stuff so I tend to disagree. I could never really absorb myself into the environments or my characters look. I also find the UI incredibly messy and ugly.
@lo pan everyone have their own definitions of MMO. I'd personally wouldn't want to be in a player ran MMO.
@lo pan players ran events and player ran MMO is different. I know what I said
@lo pan I was not coming after your opinion.
This was incredible. Well done to everyone involved. Hoping for a continuation, because this was pure gold!
I've seen a few events similar to this. Having the tools to create player driven events is one of the best things about FF14. Crawlers find a lot of ways to put a smile on my face.
This is, quite possibly, the best thing I've ever seen in an mmo.
This was incredible!!
The RP is really next level, when they showed up at Garlemald it was awesome as it was hilarious. Honestly it's just so fun it enhances the gameplay to a level that most game systems can't match even if it is temporary.
This was glorious, big big respect to your FC for organizing this :)
I have never laughed so hard, I am actually crying. You have an amazing FC full of so many amazing players. I love this game so much, it makes me want to be able to take part in these amazing community events you get involved in.
Was so good! Well done to everyone that put this on
Ok now I can’t wait for the continuation. That was such an absolutely entertaining piece of work.👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 Crawlers, you guys rock!!
I saw this live and loved every minute of it.
Having played WoW for 13 years before I got on the FF14 train, it makes me laugh seeing the WoW fans trying to shit on FF14 because it has things that their game doesn't. In terms of content FF14 has much more content that WoW, because WoW abandons its old content, while in FF you always have the option to do it synced.
And gameplay-wise FF feels better to me - balanced and well designed classes with a seperate identity for each one. Each class I have tried has been satisfying and engaging. Boss fights are designed in such a way that you don't need 101 addons to decypher it. Only thing I miss from WoW is mythic +, doing a +21 with guildies is something I still havent found a replacement for.
I got into pugging savage raiding and extreme trials recently despite being max level for a few months now ( probably because of the bitter aftertaste that the WoW pug scene left in my mouth) and the difference between WoW and FF is astonishing. No one was ever subject to the abuse that I have seen in WoW, when somrone didnt understand a mechanic, people explained and helped, instead of kicking you.
In addition, the game has a million ways for you to chill out on those days that you dont feel like doing anything challenging. And you actually have time to do it because there is nothing that induces FOMO.
I understand Preach's feelings completely. I can with confidence say that FF14 is better than the mockery that the devs and the WoW community have made of the WoW I used to love.
Allcraft was great.... 3 guys who get together to talk about Dragonflight, and instead they talk about how much they enjoyed FFXIV and learned to love themselves again.
Havent watched the vod yet but is that what they actually did? Came together to talk about dragonflight but they always somehow move the topic back into ff?
@@edboy5418 yep lol it was good
It just blows me away how one community can mend and heal people after they've dealt with let down and disappointment that was wow for so long, l....
I threw a concert for my free party when the one member took over the guild and we ended up changing names. I got to live out my rockstar dreams!
"bUt StRiMmEr ThIs Is OnLy HaPpEnNiNg bEcAuSe YoU'rE StrumMeR wItH pRivIlEgE-" no. Put yourself out there and talk to people, make friends, join an FC, go to some venues with them and enjoy yourselves and maybe you'll realise that similar content is available for everyone to enjoy.
Update: Just today my friend started playing bard songs randomly and I asked them to play in our FC pub instead on the stage and they put on an impromptu performance for 3 people. So you don't have to be a big streamer or anything to have these fun social interactions with others.
AMAZING! I'm so happy for you Mike... You and the people you play with in your Free Company! Everyone of you should be very proud of yourselves. I've been so happy since leaving World of Warcraft... primarily because of the people I have met in my Free Company.
Also, for someone like me who suffers from depression, there are times when I just can't play because of circumstances in my life... and I have never felt punished by the game for not playing for a few days, even for a few weeks. And when I come back, the people, the friends I have made in my Free Company since joining FFXIV, have always welcomed me back with warm greetings and genuine friendship.
It feels good man. It just feels good.
Regardless if FFXIV is the game you play as your 'main' game, or just 'another' game you play... It is a welcoming place, and gives to it's players more than it asks of them. FFXIV is not the only game I play now since leaving WoW, I have really learned to try other games and find the fun in gaming again, but what I can say is that giving FFXIV a chance (and honestly only because Asmongold gave it chance)... my gaming life has changed so much for the better.
I hope you always keep finding the joy of gaming, the joy we all felt when we got into our first video game! Keep playing Mike!
people keep wanting that feeling of "united passion" over a game or hobby yet when they think they are getting the same feeling that the game first brought ppl together with, it falls short and they are left dissapointed. it will never measure up to the original feeling.
Ive been playing ff14 for a long time but still this game and its players find new ways to amaze me. This is incredible.
This is the greatest thing I have seen in an MMO
That's amazing. Reminded of that famous episode from ATLA
Preach should look into getting some vip access to lunarcon and see what the community can pull off
25:15 That Scooby Doo chase had me in tears.
This right here is why i'm willing to sacrifice 2 entire years worth of raid tiers for player housing. We know Blizzard wants to do it. Imagine just how impactful customizable halls or houses would be for the game! I don't care what it would take to make it happen, it would be worth the sacrifices imo.
MMOs are always about that connection and fun.
I've played MMOs for years and while story and gameplay provides staying power, its the ways to connect to people that's truly where the Fun comes from.
As part of my FC that I've led for almost 5 years now, I've had so many experiences with them that has changed my life.
Same vibes as the play near the end of avatar the last airbender, and that's a very good thing
Mate, that was well good. What a community.
Dude, Mike 🤣🤣🤣
16:27 I'm so going to edit this to make it into a text alert notification
This whole production was next tier! My god.... job VERY WELL DONE!!!
Sounds kinda like Bartle's Taxonomy.
Basically there's 4 different kinds of gamers... Achievers, explorers, socializers, and killers.
MMOs like FFXIV and WoW try to cater to all these players. It's difficult to do and costs a lot of time and development but it's possible, clearly. FFXIV for example has really leaned in with socializers and achievers.
some of my best memoryies of wow are with guilds not doing anything important and when wow decided it needed to be more of a toss away theme park then a breathing world. when it neededto curate your seasonal experiance. when it had to hyper focus for your paly time fun or not is when its magic died and that will ikely be something the corprate overlord in charge no matter how they try will every capture again
This is easily the most impressive thing I've seen someone do within game without editing.
This is one of the most creative FCs I have ever seen.
I would pay Gil to see this show in game.
I lost it at the scooby doo chase sequence. 11/10! well done!
This was amazing, I also happened to tune in to your livestream during your first night club visit and that was probably one of the closest video game moments in my life. Even though I was just watching it through your stream.
we need one for each expansion now. make it happen XD
Very cool. Loved the whole story arc. Crawlers are a delightful bunch. 😊
Yo I gotta be honest, I've never thought you could do those things with housing and I have been playing this game since beta. You truly have gotten the jackpot when it comes to choosing the FC.
okay, that Rihtahtyn cosplay is SUPER good, I really want to know what those weapons are!!
This is genuinely hilarious! Such creativity.
This was absolutely brilliant! Couldn’t stop laughing 😂
you know what new housing item is needed...curtains that you can interact with like a lamp so you can open and close them
I legitimately laughed out loud but more impressive is the stage set up! Hydalyn best character giver her a gold globe
WoW absolutely needs to invest into making this shit in WoW.
Just go and catch a Songbirds performance. Just using the in-game tools. There's no MMO that provides this amount of creative freedom.
Damn that was great, cheers to all!
So cool!
Oh my god. If me and my bard troupe had these kinds of tools in WoW for our stage productions I would love Blizzard forever
All Blizzard has to do is put in an in depth housing system lol. They refuse to because they want to do it all in one go instead of in stages to make it more manageable. Imagine if they got the base system down with like 3 or 4 racial/faction housing themes and then expanded from there. Sadly Blizzard prob wont do that.
Keep dreaming.
No can do… would lose a raid tier
My dude, FFXIV has actual bards that play music! People do incredible things with that. Like, it's entirely possible this play could have had live music accompaniment, as well.
You have an amazing FC, and I wish I could play on the EU data centers w/o utterly ruining my ping.
This is like that episode of Avatar when they watch the play of their adventure lol
This was the most beautiful thing I've seen all month.💖
Honestly, after this I really wanna see Preach see a bard band. DJ's are cool and all but the fact you can create ingame music is still blowing my mind whenever I see a bard band.
What Blizzard - and not only Blizzard, but many videogame companies nowadays - can learn from this is that if you squeeze your players for every second of their available time they will eventually burn out and leave. Blizzard got lucky their game was a community hub way before they started fucking up, but it was a matter of time.
However, if you give people tools to have fun without stressing them into playing everything for every single second of their time, they *will* give you as much time as they're able to give you. It's a worse short term strategy, but it's a miles better as a long term strategy. It's the reason people keep resubbing for XIV even if they run out of stuff to do. They just *want* to play, and as long as you give them tools, they will find a way to continue playing.
Oh my god, that's so much work ! It's AWESOME ! Thanks for sharing it with us
Completely agree with the conclusion of this video. The social aspect of FF14 is something no other MMOs have ever managed to come close to touching just because of the sheer free form potential while *also* having other content in the game.
I may prefer other games for their theme park features but I love FF14's innovation and freedom despite having severe engine limitations, which only make it all the more impressive that they're able to present such nice options and customizations through the player housing system that makes all sorts of things possible.
RP in other games simply can't exist on the same level.
this was absolutely awesome and fantastic !!!!
22:06 --- And the ominous music still in the back XD
Not to talk bad about anyone, this is amazing, but I think one of the driving aspects was that Mike is a streamer - so everything the Crawlers do gets published via him. I dont know if this would've happened if it was "just" their FC and guests enjoying this - especially since it was a parody of Mike playing ARR. But I may be wrong :) And it doesnt take away that this was some piece of art and I really hope some devs see this!
I see Preach is taking note from Azmon on naming his video's. :D Good show though, very well done
This was AMAAAAZING!!
