Howdy Everyone, Chris here! Well Mike has now finished Endwalker - Don't worry story videos are to come, we're just getting back on track after the race. Now Mike is starting to take a look into the more MMO aspects of 14, and in today's video he talks about one of the coolest farming systems he has seen.

Hey Chris, just something I noticed: Since changing PCs Mikes voice sounds really, really compressed and clippy both on stream and in this video as well. Compare the sound of this video to one from before the new PCs arrived and it should be very obvious something is wrong. Maybe his audio settings got lost or something?

One of my favorite parts about Maps is the way differnet groups develop like...superstitions and traditions for them. Someone I know always picks left, one group always does the same dance, another always prays to Ramuh. It's great.
Also a testament to maps is that like, I never even considered it a farming system until this video right now. I mostly just thought of it as a fun way to make gil.

It's kind of ironic, but one of my favorite things in FF really is that you can just... not play it. And even if I came back after months of not playing, getting up to speed really isn't a huge deal. Compare that do 9.2.5, or god forbid 8.3, where you're just utterly fucked for weeks, if not months, if you skipped a patch or two, it's so refreshing.

    • @crazzluz1702

So I agree with this almost 100% but catch-up in WoW is not bad now. I just resubbed the other day, and I finished the ZM campaign in 3 hours for my Unity belt, got flying in ZM in 30 minutes after, got my 291 Lego with no Torghast, and am ilvl 250 with my 4 piece guaranteed in 2 weeks. Altogether it probably took 4-5 hours of play, and I leveled a fresh covenant from 1-80 while I was doing it.
It was definitely bad in 9.0 and especially 9.1 and 8.3, but 9.2 is actually pretty good for catch-up.

Bad RNG drops in these can be somewhat alleviated by the amount of gil that you'll be passively earning by playing these maps and you'll come out with enough to just buy the rare item/material from the market board which is also pretty great, though naturally you'll want to earn the gil and obtain the mat to come out all the richer! But still, it's an option!

@@MrKnaives That didn't used to be the case. It used to be that it would cost 100 MGP to play and you could get like 30-40 MGP and lose a little. You'd end up winning more than you lose over the long run, but you'd have a whole day where you'd lose. But, partway through Stormblood they changed things so you always won. I suspect it was to ensure they didn't run into issues with gambling. Despite the fact you can't pay any money for the currency at all. Note that there's no MGP associated with mahjong at all, aside from the challenge log. That was a deliberate choice so it wouldn't fall afoul of any gambling laws.

What's great about grinding in FF14 is that a lot of it kills two birds with one stone. You can go through Bozja to experience fun large-scale combat, a nice story, three great raids, etc. But that's not even the end of it (though what I listed are already great reasons to experience Bozja).
When you get an alt job to lvl 70, you can use it to easily level up to 80. AND THAT'S NOT ALL. Whilst doing that you still get more lockboxes and the like to get more sweet items and mounts and such. A lot of what you do in the game helps you out in the long run, even if you don't know it at the time.

    • @Lordoftheapes79

One thing I'll add: the randomness of map loot is mitigated by the fact that virtually all loot can be sold for gil. So if there's a specific piece of loot you want, you can just buy it off the marketboard instead. EZ.

Another positive to farming stuff in treasure maps is that all of the materials you can get in there can be put up on the marketboard. If you get stuff you don't need, you can sell it for a decent amount of money. If you don't get the thing you want, you could alternatively get it from the marketboard using the money that you've been getting from your runs. It never feels like you go into this and get absolutely nothing out of it. Edit: I should also mention that all of the stuff from treasure dungeons is for the most part cosmetic. Besides a little bit of materia or the tomestomes which you can get from numerous other activities, everything you get is not tied to player power progression so it's not something you ever feel like you need to do either.

So if you make one a botanist and you needed logs for a craft you can send them out to get them for you, as long as you have gathered that item once yourself, and the retainer is a high enough level and has appropriate gear. They can also do quick or long ventures where they get tons of exp and bring back a random item sometimes worth 500k+.

    A couple of notes:
The higher lower game doesn't double your outcome everytime, it gives you an additional 1x the original prize pool.
You can't use tomestones for your alts, unless you pick up mats for crafted gear. Tomestones are bound to the character

When he's talking about alts he's referring to the alt jobs on 1 character - since in games like WoW you have to make an entirely new character to play another class.

Mike comes from WoW, where you can't change class without levelling a new alt. I think he considers different jobs to be Alts which you can play on one main character.

Thanks to this, I bothered to level up my Miner job to 90 and I’ve gotten involved in my first treasure hunting party. 4 of us brought 3 maps each and we made so much gil. Not to mention selling all the materials I’ve gained by mining at max level has also made me so much more gil. It’s fun and engaging, and I’m no longer panicking about fast travel costs 😂

I love crafting in FFXIV. I do crafting in almost every MMO I go into. I heal, DPS, and gather/craft. Heal and DPS tends to be interchangeable depending on my day.
Gathering will take you places you might not have seen while doing the MSQ. Crafting...it is like a mini game in itself. Though, it sometimes gets annoying.
I have yet to do any treasure map dungeons. Especially the Zonure Maps. (Really want to craft a set of Calf Skin clothes for myself and my husband.) Also, haven't found a group that I could go through the Alliance Trials to get boz unlocked.

Your point about "different optional systems with varying rewards" is still relevant for crafting and gathering. There is The Firmament, Ocean Fishing, Fieldcraft Leves, Collectables, Retainers with gathering jobs, and Grand Company Supply & Provision missions. I've leveled several of my professions very slowly by buying cheap gathering mats and crafted gear off the market board and turning them into the GC once a day. I can even ask my friends to help me get HQ versions of the crafted gear if the mats on the market are much cheaper than the finished goods. More social interaction and choices.

Treasure maps are perfect for a night of drinks and bants with a bunch of friends.
Personally I've never done them for the random materials, while it's nice that you do get them, they're not what you're there for, because you can always go and gather them whenever you want.
It's the new rare drops, emotes, housing items, rare glam materials, that you can only get in maps that draw people in.

I had hoped WoW would have a similar system to treasure maps when they released those godsforsaken islands in BFA. I was expecting some sort of tomb raiding exploration content... ended up just being more mob grinding. thats what I get for expecting Blizzard to think fun over profit, I disappointed myself by having expectations. I could think of so many things that could have been but then again its Blizzard modus operandi of "Wasted Potential" in play.

it really shows they have just fully ignored their competition for too damn long, i wouldn't even be mad if blizzard simply copy pasted the whole treasure maps system, the same could also be said for a lot of other ff14 systems like scaled content making it always relevant and playable, the tomestone system which is actually a spin on the whole justice/valor currency they for some reason just axed even though it was universally praised and many other things.
I don't want wow to be ff14 they are different types of games for a different audience BUT there are absolutely things that blizzard could simply copy paste into wow and the game would be better for it

Also, you can do mapping dungeons with fewer than 8 people. They're totally doable with 4 or even 3, although 5 offers a lot more breathing room. The fact you can do this with a variably-sized party only adds to the appeal if you can't get exactly 8 people.

Yeah, but... doing the mindless grind *occasionally* can be very relaxing. I just don't do it hours at a time and most often in an MMO I haven't played in a while so the grind is not needed for some end game thing. Otherwisee the grind is a job. Something you MUST do. Some people like to do colouring for adults, get lost in a TikTok watch list, work in the garden, whatever. I like to grind in random mmo's and get no reward whatsoever from it apart from a chill afternoon. Which is massive

  • @teroril
    @teroril 2 года назад

It's kinda funny, because a lot of these kinds of activities existed in FFXI as well, long before wow was even released. BCNM, garrison and even Eco Warrior. You'd find a random drop that starts a wave-defense event somewhere, that you can do with your friends. Or use beastmen seals that dropped relatively commonly from at-level mobs to exchange for an item that lets you and your friends enter a challenge arena with the potential for drops that could be sold for half a million gil sometimes.
Maybe it's just me, but this kind of content might just be in the DNA of final fantasy as a franchise. Cause ffix had "chocobo hot and cold" and tetra master, ffx had blitzball, ffviii had triple triad and stuff. So many interesting avenues to find good gear in the single player games.

I can understand how Preach would miss this, but the main purpose of grinding the maps is to obtain map-specific drops.
The gil and general crafting materials generally don't equal the map value and time investment - though this obviously varies by server.
From the perspective of someone solo-grinding out a glamour, it is an 18hr cooldown with RNG on RNG, on a generally low drop chance.
However the fact I simply haven't sold the maps and bought the glamour material, indicates that ultimately it is an enjoyable grind.
I do like doing the maps, however the heavensward ones were my favorite - with the dungeons being rather easier to solo.

Maps are my favorite content by far. I love how the excitement you had at the final door is at the same level I still have after having over 50 final rooms in my lifetime. There is also titles for all map zones for getting 20 final rooms and some for just getting 20 portals like "Of the hype train" for Disneyland (90 maps)
I do a 4 hour map event every sunday where we do 60,70,80,90 maps and I help people make gil by making it FFA rolls and I provide the maps. If we get a final room I give everyone 50k. Its not a ton but it makes a exciting content even more exciting as well as it making bad rolls not feel as bad. We did 32 maps and got 21 portals with 4 final rooms. Was nutty RNG.
The more I watch your content to more I love it. Seeing your energy with the contnet reminds me of when I did things for the first time but it also helps me realize after all this time that level of excitement for myself hasnt dropped off much.

Since we have the FC house to ourselves now, we decided to decorate and fiddle with the airship and submarine. What surprised me the most is how much we enjoyed crafting airship and submarine. My crafting profession felt much more useful again and once we got it done and send it out, we had this sense of pride about what we have built. We are also refurbishing the FC now and our crafting profession will come useful again. We have probably spent hours just having fun in our FC.

Grinding can absolutely be made fun. Path of Exile is an excellent example for me for this. Path of Exile(PoE) is a very grindy game
The endgame in path when boiled down and translated to wow terms is running a handful of dungeons over and over again. In Wow, running 300 SFK in a day may sound boring but every PoE map(what PoE calls the end game) is different in a small way. The monsters you kill may be different, one time it might be murlocs, another it may be dragonkins. Also old league(seasons, kinda like M+ affixes) features may appear which have a chance to giving you something cool and out of the ordinary.
Not to mention that every mob you kill have a chance of giving you currency/items that allow you to change and craft items. Everything in the game revolves around making and perfecting your gear for your build.

When the gatherer (fisher, botanist or miner) is high enough, one can gather treasure maps that range from doable by a single player (moreso if max level) to the EW excitatron. Currently, I'm working on meeting the challenge log/achievement log to gather and run enough of each type of map (e.g., leather, goatskin, toadskin etc ). I can only gather one a day, so it's a little slow going; however, I'm not in a rush to complete.

Really hope that Preach decides to try out other MMOs as well. It's always fascinating seeing the way people who focused on single MMOs for years (Whether it's WoW or Runescape or whatever) don't realize how other games solve these various issues. No single game solves them all, but they all try, so if you don't like one thing, you can find something better elsewhere. The fact MMO players only usual invest their time in to a single game allows the genre to stagnate because so few people realize the grass is greener elsewhere. Games like Guild Wars 2 or Albion Online do so many cool things that WoW and even FFXIV could learn from, but change is so excruciatingly slow.

I really like the map dungeons because they're an excellent way to earn gil if you just accrue a few maps in the week and do a map party every once in a while. Even if you don't earn much off the dungeons themselves, the mats that drop (rare ones especially) can sell for a lot of gil if they craft into a nice glam item or the bed mount

Funny thing about FF14 is that there is/was that traditional grinding way for ARR items that were rare spawns, you kind of tune out with that. The Treasure maps are a much better system.
As it comes to gathering/crafting the system gets much, much more complex as you get higher level if you want to optimize your rewards so it's not just press button and watch the bar fill up, especially if you want High Quality items as using your skill correctly is very important, even if they did make a bit easier it's still not "press button and turn of your brain".

It's also important to think about how, grinds in FFXIV are segmented such that if you just want to make progress on one singular thing, it's a doable task, and you get something nice out of it. Getting every finished relic weapon in ShB may be a massive task, but hitting the next glam unlock on a singular weapon takes, like, an hour or two at worst. You can log in and say "okay, I want to get THIS today" and generally get it.
There are only a few time-gated grinds, and on average, even the time gated grinds tend to be significantly more gentle than any other MMO. And the time gated grinds get segmented too! Raiding savage, sure it takes a minimum of seven weeks to get your 600 weapon, but you're getting other bis in the meantime. Every week of clears is tangible, measurable progress. For tribe quests, it can take a couple weeks to hit max rep, but each of the ranks in-between unlock rewards you can buy with the currency the tribes are giving you in the process of ranking up. The XIV devs WANT you to get the most fulfilling experience they can possibly provide.
