Just as a general rule of thumb -- if a Black Mesa staff member is able to follow you, it's extra nice to keep them alive as long as possible. It's not like HL1 where they'll just stand there forever at the first obstacle blocking their way; everyone who can follow you has a nice little conclusion to their own journey, and sometimes a few cool and missable interactions. You can escort a surprisingly big posse all the way to the elevator in Office Complex for example. EDIT: And word of warning, sometimes they auto-follow you: the second guard could have come with you for example, his "you know where to find me" was him genuinely being toggled off after automatically being ready to come with
Mapo, try save black mesa personnels as many as possible and make them follow you so you get to hear more interesting dialogues and their reaction to certain events.
There's an achievement for collecting all the (not-scripted-to-die) scientists and security guards in office complex and making sure they make it together to the end of the chapter alive. SPOILER BELOW: Later in the game some of them can even get you access to secret areas and stuff.
Also at 16:00 in not sure why you couldn't take down that barricade, but a couple scientists are in there you can totally save, well for the moment at least. You can bring all the guards and scientists from the collected areas up over the cafeteria and get an achievement.
I love how much he improved his skills with mouse & keyboard gunplay in Half-Life games, he was too doubtly at first because of the lack of experience with it, with still decent skills too, but later onto Episode Two and here it's just him zooming and blasting all over the place tearing down Vortigaunts in the Office Complex and stuff, he's one of the best Blind Players i've ever seen.
29:04 "Oh, I just circled all the way around", yes you did, this is one of Valve's level design principles, they make the most out of the same space. You may remember how in Portal (1) you get to see old test chambers from a different space. This level design philosophy is thoroughly observed and commented on by the gaming community. You'll find yourself "circling around" the same areas many more times, although the experience is designed so you don't notice it at first. Remember crawling through vents and seeing the places you already cleared before? Same principle at play :)
Here some fact: Black Mesa originally came out as a mod for Half life 2 back in 2012 later released on steam in 2015. The game was ended on chapter: Lambda Core. Xen wasn't out yet at the time because it had issues running on the source engine. It took 8 years for CC to finish and release Xen and boy, it was worth the wait.
It didn't have issues running on the source engine. They just decided to remake the entire thing because the original was the worst part of the original game.
@@Martin4H The engine still does struggle sometimes. Especially in the later areas in Xen, where there is a lot of stuff to render and you get frame dips. It doesn't matter if you have a beast of a pc, the engine is still the limitation. Just like a lot of other games, such as Titanfall, the engine has been put to its very limit on what it can do. The Source engine is over 18 years old at this point.
I think its testament to the new level design work in Black Mesa in how quickly Mapo got through Blast Pit this time around. Even if you disregard his deaths to the tentacles in the first playthrough, it takes way longer to find your way through all the corridors and sub-objectives in the original and its easy to get lost. They did some nice work with signposting and streamlining this whole section, just like they have in many other areas of the game.
At like 9:45. Just to answer the question far more verbose than needed. The textures themselves are programmed to what noise is emitted when hit, walked up on, etc. So basically, when I make a texture, I also have to create a .vmt, and in that Vmt file, you categorize what type of material it is. So for instance, I can classify it as concrete, metal, glass. Once I do that, it applies the usual properties, sounds of what I inputed. I'll stop myself there though, I love to talk about mapping. There's my overcomplicated statement as to why things make sound in source games.
I'd say explore around and saving the people a lil bit for fancy dialogue. -Also, every weapon has a right click secondary fire, like pistol it's continuous shot, double shot with shotgun, etc.- (I think u used the pistol stuff, so u know) Btw, black mesa has some part's where there's 2 routes you can take to the same destination, because some layout has been changed in remake & ofc the linear paths have one more "different" route. For you next keyboard challenge, i'll say try using the shift key to run instead of autorun. It's kinda implied(/headcanndon?) that the friendship with barney that Gordon had, got him to do the vent crawling & athletic stuff with some shooting range training.
Not implied - It is canon but not quite like you describe. Why Gordon is so good with vents? - in HL2:EP1 when you go through the vent labyrinth to open the door there is interaction with Alyx teasing you about being "crawling through vents champion" as she was told by her father that Gordon and Barney were always competing who can faster get through vents into doctor Kleiner's Office because he almost constantly somehow managed to lock himself out. Gordon did go through something similar to military training - because everyone who get HEV suit assigned to them go through extensive training programs to raise their endurance, fitness, survival and learn to use a wide array of weapons. Because usually HEV suit was given to those who worked in Lambda Lab (Meaning all HEV suit users were being prepared for work in Xen) - Gordon wasn't part of Lambda Lab but because he needed HEV suit to work (which basically made him one of a few HEV suit users outside main program it was made for) - he got full training course anyway because it is part of the package.
The game becomes better and better further you get into it. I advise that you disable auto sprint. And change difficulty to Black Mesa. Take it slower and enjoy this masterpiece.
Mapo, I don't know if you're doing it on purpose, but this video kinda felt like you were rushing through it. You walk straight past health chargers, barely bother breaking crates and don't explore the environment all that much. If that's how you want to play that's fine, since you don't seem to have any trouble with health and ammo (it should be noted you might be playing on the easiest difficulty), but after your HL: Alyx playthrough it seems like such a stark contrast. It might be because you technically played through this game once already, but Black Mesa has tons of nice details in its environment that are really worth taking your time for.
It does feel very rushed, he ran past a lot of the scientists and guards and didn't even bother taking them with him. He missed a lot of cool dialogue.
Once you have time, you should totally look into playing Half Life: Echoes. Its a mod for Half Life 1 thats from the perspective of a random scientist in black mesa
You weren't misremembering about the fan thing btw. There used to be planks that you had to destroy at the top for the air to pass through, which they decided to remove here in Black Mesa. It did create fond memories of speding who knows how long looking around in your first playthrough of HL1 though!
Just wanted to point out some issues with "Cover" in this game with regards to turrets and any AI, the boxes that turrets/AI recognize and shoot at are a bit larger than what your view is, think of it like holding a gun out in front of you and your gun is slightly poking from behind the wall- the turret knows you're there and will still try and shoot at you but won't damage you, but if an AI like a marine or bullsquid notice you then they will just simply walk to where you're more easy to shoot at. ex.(37:25) Another thing to note about turrets and AI, they will shoot through thin walls like chainlink fences and it will hurt you ex.(39:22)
Grenades are good for dealing with bullsquid at a distance because they don't move while spitting at you. Speaking of which you can cook grenades by holding left click (something the original didn't have), just don't hold them too long.
Yeah, he was like 1 or 2 hits away from breaking it. He really just rushed through this episode and missed SO many things without properly observing, testing, and exploring
Figured I’d mention, half life alyx is the only half life game where barnacles will eat the explosives and blow up, not requiring you to shoot the barrel. It’s a welcome addition but not in any other game!
…but you still have to shoot the barrels to explode them (usually 2 hits to get them burning on their way up like the fuse on a stick of dynamite), otherwise the barnacles just spit them back undamaged, which is what happened to mapo in this episode. HLA is the only HL game where the explosives items explode automatically when bitten by the barnacles.
Hello. I have a suggestion to get acquainted with a series of games about post-apocalypse in Russia. The action takes place in the Moscow underground, which we call the metro. I think you'll like this universe, as well as "Half-life". There are 3 games in total and they go in the following order. "Metro 2033 Redux", "Metro Last Light Redux", and "Metro Exodus".
good games, play with no crosshair and with russian dub for maximum immersion and if you have a good rtx card play the enhanced edition of metro exodus, you can find by swithing to the beta branch on gog, not sure if it's the same on steam
Something that makes me pout. Between the MOD Black Mesa and game version they changed somethings. One was a lovely little quark of a sign. You get up close to read it and it essentially says "your reading of this notice has been noticed. You will be notified when notice of your notice of this notice is notified by the proper authorities" or similar.
If I were you I would turn off the auto-sprint feature because you are really missing some of the environmental story-telling elements by zooming past them so quickly. for instance you missed the sign that said surface acces next to the elevator before the epic outdoor battle section. it would've made it just a little more epic to see the surface for the first time.
I noticed that the double-shot mode on the shotgun doesn't down the marines if the shot lands more on the sides of their bodies instead of their chest or head. Also, distance is a factor too so if you're too far, they take less damage. Because these guys strafe lke crazy, it's easy to miss those shots and hit them on their side instead of getting the insta-kill.
Regarding people running into those laser traps: I'm not sure where it's pointed out but I do recall that somewhere there's an official explanation, which is that those blatantly obvious red lasers are only visible because of your character's HUD.
@@farawaygaming_ that part was in the video right?, the part with the soapy floor, they aknowledge that there is a beam, but there's a corpse there too, so it's safe to assume that one of them died and the other two saw the tripwire mechanism on the wall and assumed it uses a laser beam to detect movement

Instead of shoot, run, shoot, etc. they tank a lot more bullet too due to incorrect hit boxes. also vortiguant’s never miss unless the line of sight is disrupted! As well as a aoe attack cut from half life 2 which you’ve encountered a few times already. Everything is much more aggressive with the newer ai.
Make sure to stay close and get npc's to follow you there's alotta little sidequests and interactions that are really cool if you stick around people. I highly recommend that. Some even give you access to weapons early i think
just a curiosity to make you feel bad, you'll notice that sometimes the vorts AI seems to break, they stop attacking and start to run... well, that's supposed to mean that they are in fear, and try to run from you, you can see it on 35:25 that after you obliterated their friend that they try to run and stop attacking you, if you hurt them enough they will do the same
I got a streamer to rush past the tentacles when the music blasts and it was perfect. At first they didn't understand and died then they went on the blast and only got hit once in the rush.
You sure? I played on Normal and it was way, WAY harder than this. I'm sure he's playing on Easy, because there's no way in the world a direct hit by bullsquid vomit would only do 1 point of health damage and 2-3 points of suit damage. And did you see how long he tanked that first turret for? It should have torn him in half! Seriously, everything is doing scratch damage to him, which is why he's able to breeze through using the crowbar for everything. The game literally could not be made any easier without putting it in Walking Simulator Mode.
It feels like the game auto-switched to easy difficulty (It does that sometimes) because the wall turret hitting for 1-2 dmg isnt right)) Also the tentacle monster hitting for 10 dmg isnt right too, even in HL1 that thing could kill you in 2-3 hits with full hp/armor. I may be wrong, but maybe check that in the options menu as you can manually change the difficulty on the way. (Maybe even try hard at some point, cause it cracks up the intensity of firefights with soldiers) Anyway, hope you're enjoying the re-journey through the game, can't wait for you to get further into it.
I can see why the early sections may give off the impression that it's Half-Life with a new coat of paint because they stayed relatively loyal to the original for those, but once you get further in it's pretty much a whole new game, will be interesting hearing your opinions when you reach that point. XD
lol someone probably mentioned it already but you definitely remembered the fan correctly, they changed it a bit for Black Mesa. I thought the way they did it in the original game was awesome so I don't really see a reason to change it except it does make for a less repetitive experience if you know the original very well.
that office complex was so cool. How much NPCs were possible to gather around gordon? 3 scientists + 5 securities? The cantine was a small shooting range and before the elevator it was a massacre :D Can someone explain why the installed turrets are hostile against BM stuff? design error in original HL or took the military it over and let it shoot on everything alive?
possible internal failsafe to eliminate all survivors. or the systems got buggy thanks to the resonance cascade and its identification, friend or foe (IFF) system got fried.
Bcs u wasnt behind cover (its like in Counter Strike) . U have weapon in right hand so the left part of the body is more visible (peak always to the right) . imagine you have mp5 and aim with your right eye and peek to the left who will see who the first opponent you or you opponent ? Sorry for my English
@@TheEnd5632 They made them bigger and more detailed, sure, but also more linear. Example: the part in Surface Tension with the storm drain hatch, the mines and the tentacle, instead of four interconnected areas, one of which is completely optional, it's three segments that are arranged linearly. The very confusing vent section of We've Got Hostiles has been replaced with a linear hallway. The entirety of On A Rail, that one needs no explaining. Power Up has been changed to be far more clear as to what you objective is and where you need to go to achieve it, without the possibility of backtracking prematurely. I don't always like the way it's changed, in fact I often think they restricted the possibility of backtracking too much and made it TOO linear (like the ability to return to the giant ammo cache in Surface Tension). But there's no denying it's been made more linear.
@@ethanlivemere1162 in my experience, the level design in half-life and half-life 2 is made to guide the player to where they're supposed to go, sometimes in a subtle way, sometimes not so much So even when i played for the first time i would find myself going the right way when all i did was run around like an idiot xD But when i tried black mesa, i got lost and confused multiple times, and found myself running around in circles sometimes.
Unrelated to this playthrough but in similar spirit, would you ever consider playing New Game+ in the rest of Dark Souls games? I know you did NG+ for DS1.
I wonder if it felt rushed due to always run on?🤔 they didn't include sprint animation on always run on setting? or am i mistaken and sprint is different then this?🤷♂
I really wish you wouldn't run through this game so quickly. I doesn't feel like you're taking that many opportunities to take everything in, and you missed both emergency broadcasts, which are honestly really interesting to listen to and help flesh out the world. :(
Playing this game on any difficulty other than the hardest is just wasting it. The artificial intelligence is designed to bring out its full repertoire on hard mode. Because the enemies become more accurate to shoot (without becoming unrealistic) and use more and better combat skills. It becomes the Dark Souls of the First Person Shooters
Screw the AI, the fact that enemies are only doing about 25% of their normal damage per hit or less completely eviscerates any sense of challenge in the game at all.
6:30 geez overkill much, Also you could have assembled an army of Barney's during Office Complex. I think you should challenge yourself to keep the Barney's alive Your combat has improved but you need to work on searching certain larger areas for supplies. You missed quite a bit
Honestly, I think playing on Easy has made his combat skill degrade massively through sheer complacency. The way he just runs into combat blasting away like the Doom Marine and getting away with it because enemies literally only do 2-3 points of damage to him per hit would get him ripped to shreds on normal difficulty.
@@ArcaneAzmadi oh that explains a lot. I always play on Black Mesa difficulty and get smoked when I try what he does. I just thought he was better at it.

.....you know what, I really, really think Mapocolops should just disable comments going forward because clearly nobody is listening to his previously stated wishes.
No, bullsquids were made significantly more powerful in Black Mesa than in the original Half-Life- they're larger and stronger and their acid is a huge spray which is almost impossible to dodge rather than a single blob which is easy to. It is actually a bit disconcerting that you're by now very obviously flying through the game on Easy difficulty, almost like you're trying to speedrun it (plus the requisite amount of faffing about throwing physics objects around). Normally one would expect that, since you're a veteran of the series by now, you'd play the game on a HARDER difficulty setting for a better challenge. Then again, the playthrough might take you abour 30 hours if you did that and start to get rather frustrating...
I can't put a finger on it but I feel like in some ways the physics/visuals in this game are worse than HL2, which is a shame. Like look at how the grenades fly across the air in this game Vs. in HL2, the physics is so much smoother in HL2.

I got a streamer to rush past the tentacles when the music blasts and it was perfect. At first they didn't understand and died then they went on the blast and only got hit once in the rush.
Just a heads up, "normal" difficulty is easy, which seems to be what you're playing on. May or may not be intentional!
Hello Mapo, have you considered playing Black Mesa - Blue Shift?
Highly recommend it.
39:35 Not at all, the turret shot you through the gap between crate and wall.
2:44 the first few seconds of that music always sounded very re3 nemesis to me.
Love your content keep up the great work!
(Maybe even try hard at some point, cause it cracks up the intensity of firefights with soldiers)
Anyway, hope you're enjoying the re-journey through the game, can't wait for you to get further into it.
I can see why the early sections may give off the impression that it's Half-Life with a new coat of paint because they stayed relatively loyal to the original for those, but once you get further in it's pretty much a whole new game, will be interesting hearing your opinions when you reach that point. XD
the music is a bang
you don't need to rush things bro chill especially playing half life xD
lol someone probably mentioned it already but you definitely remembered the fan correctly, they changed it a bit for Black Mesa.
21:48 wow 😆
Can't wait for XEN to blow his mind
1:23:09 i always thought a child was giggling
46:35 No you died and because you were left-clicking you loaded your last save.
Another great video as always!
No one else notice that the team of vorts didn’t appear and ambush him after getting the shotgun from the security guard?!?!?! Bug?
Bcs u wasnt behind cover (its like in Counter Strike) . U have weapon in right hand so the left part of the body is more visible (peak always to the right) . imagine you have mp5 and aim with your right eye and peek to the left who will see who the first opponent you or you opponent ?
Sorry for my English

Actually, that's Black Mesa map design
Original half-life was more linear and less confusing
Black mesa changed a lot of things
No, Black Mesa made it more linear actually. Black Mesa made tons of segments far more linear and eliminated a lot of backtracking possibilities.
@@ethanlivemere1162 Not really.
Black Mesa expanded almost every map, making them bigger but also more confusing to navigate
Dude you’re tripping
The black mess level design is waaay better and linear.
@@ethanlivemere1162 in my experience, the level design in half-life and half-life 2 is made to guide the player to where they're supposed to go, sometimes in a subtle way, sometimes not so much
So even when i played for the first time i would find myself going the right way when all i did was run around like an idiot xD
But when i tried black mesa, i got lost and confused multiple times, and found myself running around in circles sometimes.
mapo i can tell you for a fact that gordon freeman does NOT say "its blast pittin time" in the original Half Life game
You don’t remember it? He says it right before he Blast Pits all over the tentacles.
Doom 3 might be cool for you to check out, I don't know how you pick new games though
29:53 lol
Get back Squidward!!!
Unrelated to this playthrough but in similar spirit, would you ever consider playing New Game+ in the rest of Dark Souls games? I know you did NG+ for DS1.
Can't wait for him to get to Xen.
The bullsquids ARE more annoying in Black Mesa compared to the original. In Half Life they shot single spitballs instead of shotgunning you
28:04 look the Exit G-Man
Had you stand there in front of the Exit door longer you WOULD had seen the G-Man walking by.
I wonder if it felt rushed due to always run on?🤔 they didn't include sprint animation on always run on setting? or am i mistaken and sprint is different then this?🤷♂
me seeing insulindian phasmid: 8:26
I really wish you wouldn't run through this game so quickly. I doesn't feel like you're taking that many opportunities to take everything in, and you missed both emergency broadcasts, which are honestly really interesting to listen to and help flesh out the world. :(
I didn't think he would start playing! Annnd now im late 😐🤦♂️
You missed some cool dialogues, dont leave npcs behind if you have the possibility to bring them with you.
I love the music but it's a bit loud maybe you could lower it.
And the sound effects too.
Hello I would like to order some Freeman Fries
Playing this game on any difficulty other than the hardest is just wasting it. The artificial intelligence is designed to bring out its full repertoire on hard mode. Because the enemies become more accurate to shoot (without becoming unrealistic) and use more and better combat skills. It becomes the Dark Souls of the First Person Shooters
Screw the AI, the fact that enemies are only doing about 25% of their normal damage per hit or less completely eviscerates any sense of challenge in the game at all.
Play HL2 - Entropy Zero, it's story is interesting
He will get to it eventually I am sure
Sadly that game also involves killing Vorts :(
@@Martin4H especially in 2
6:30 geez overkill much, Also you could have assembled an army of Barney's during Office Complex.
8:25 AARON PAUL???????
Watched your first episode, which got me to buy the game. big half life fan.... loving the game, but i do find they changed and added things that make no sense to me from the original.
Are you playing on easy difficulty? This game is most enjoyable on the hardest difficulty setting. Vorts are dying way to fast imo
8:26
You seem to be playing on easy difficulty I think
I notice less enemy than what i have played maybe cuz gamemode i do hard if you feel too easy change it to hard it not hard for someone played halflife before
.....you know what, I really, really think Mapocolops should just disable comments going forward because clearly nobody is listening to his previously stated wishes.
Music is kinda loud
That’s good
I can't put a finger on it but I feel like in some ways the physics/visuals in this game are worse than HL2, which is a shame. Like look at how the grenades fly across the air in this game Vs. in HL2, the physics is so much smoother in HL2.
This clicky keyboard is just too annoying to keep watching.
