Mapo if you're ever tempted to play this game again in your own time, I recommend you pay some attention to the NPCs -- there's a lot more effort put in to them, there's a lot of NPC interactions and mini-story moments you're missing by leaving everybody behind
I like that while in the original game tanks felt like a part of enviroment, here it really feels that marines are actively throwing more and more stuff against you.
Mapocolops i really love this gameplay of Black Mesa, but you are missing a ton of dialogue by not making friendly npc follow you, a lot of funny and lore related conversation ^^
Got to echo a lot of what the comments are saying regarding NPC dialogue. The fact that you've reached the end of Surface Tension by the end of part 4 it feels a lot like you're powering through the game without much of a second thought. I can understand why that might be the case if you've been marathoning the entire Half-Life series back to back. In all honestly through, Black Mesa goes to great lengths to not only improve the games visuals and gameplay, but also the characters and dialogue. The opening chapter before the disaster has so much amusing dialogue you get from hanging around and observing the NPCs or interacting with the guards you can easily spend an hour there. The rest of the game does the same thing, extending character dialogue to have them discuss the situation amongst one another or comment on things you find as you explore with them. It really helps to bring them to life so much more than the original. Even the emergency broadcasts and military chatter you hear over the various radios throughout gives you some idea of what's going on outside the facility. :)
Yeah, you have no idea how painful it is - in any playthrough of this game - for players to completely ignore the dialogue without a second thought. I love Mapo, but gosh
My favorite part of the Earthbound chapters are the intense shootout parts with large battles that have multiple phases. Like at the dam for example. You ambush a group of soldiers, they call for backup, you take out the backup, rush into their stronghold on the dam, then you either face their reinforcement helicopter head-on and force it to retreat or you jump into the water. The segments like that really shows off the brute power they have over the place and helps to illustrate their descent into powerless retreat by the end of the chapter and in the subsequent one, little disappointed that you keep leaving everyone behind though
I can't believe he stick his nose in every corner, yet he completely miss the entire Xen Enclosure part (sure you see it later on, but here it looks stunning when you see it for the first time)
Loving this play through so far, though I think you should really take in what the game truly has to offer especially when it comes to dialogue and npc interactions. They’ve really put a lot of effort into npcs you interact with and more detail into their own little scenes if you manage to bring them along and keep them alive until their endpoint. It’s pretty lively in contrast with what HL1 presented. Although I don’t mind if you keep going the pace you’re at, it’s your playthrough after all and still engaging nevertheless
yeah it's a bit disappointing mapo keeps referring to it as a "fresh coat of paint." i think playing all the subsequent HL games has maybe caused him to forget quite how different HL1 is compared to this. he keeps saying "is this the part where ___ happens?" or "i don't remember this part," that's because a lot of portions are much different and modernized
@@DrLobot It feels like it, he is skipping a lot of areas and aren't exploring any of the side areas at all. He has missed a ton of areas already that he just ran past.
Imo I love playing it in hard cuz that’s the difficulty I feel is the most canon like, nothing gives you a big rush and feel like an actual dangerous man as being able to defeat big groups of marines.
Alyx mentions in hl2 that Breen was Gordon's administrator, so an administrator for the anomalous materials lab, meaning his office was probably around the area in the chapter "office complex".
So! Tanks and Vehicles in general are more generous in this since you can hit them anywhere to deal damage. The reason why "aim for the turret" was ever a thing was because the chassis of these vehicles were part of map geometry or entities that don't do anything. But since the vehicles are now their own monster entities, mappers can just place them on maps no different from any other NPC. Yes, Surface Tension IS the longest chapter since it's basically several combat arenas one after the other. The layouts in general have been changed to make the buildings you rummage through make more sense. Beyond certain key locations and landmarks, it's hard to trust your own memory on this.
Fairly rare though. I’ve broken every crate in the game and the ones that usually have loot are from older parts of the game that haven’t been updated much
1:36 Just "A little bit"? Lol, you have no idea. You'll be pogging your whole playthrough in Xen when you get there, boi. And well, I have to say it, I know you're playing at your own pace and enjoyment and that's great, but I think it would be better if you were trying not to rush the game so much, paying attention to the details in the game like dialogues and features would impress you a lot. This is not half-life 1 where you've already seen how the plot goes, this game has a lot of new things, even in the earthbound (Pre-Xen) chapters. Take this as a huge feedback, you're already doing great in this playthrough, but you can do better in order to get the best of your opinions and perspectives about this game. This was the reason we highly reccomended you to play it: To see what do you think deeply about the whole game progression. The same as you did during the Whole Half-Life 2 and its episodes.
I've just realized there is no blood on your hands/weapon model. This feature was disabled by default in latest versions, but you can enable it. I'm glad you said something about the audio mixing being all over the place because those were my exact thoughts playing through this game the first time as well. I wish they had more controls for individual elements instead of just music and then everything else. If nothing else, I'd wish Crowbar Collective would go back and do an audio pass on the project and balance the mixing out.
please pay a bit more attention to the npcs. ik they dont do much in hl1, but they put a lot of effort into their dialogue etc. in certain areas in this game.

Actually this does make more sense, since this game takes place post-geneva convention. While mines aren't banned in military court, they need proper labelling and ease of removal, having them easily seen is a method in this. The objective of the minefield is to control troop movement but having them unlabelled and undetectable is a warcrime.
@@dracmeister imagine the HECU just pulled a "well this isn't a war" and decided to bury the mines. Would make Black Mesa ST so much more tense in the minefield sections.
@@Bumbum62673 Geneva Convention also applies post-war/peacetime. Because if you have hidden/unlabelled mines on, like say, a dirt road commonly travelled by civilians, once these roads become open to travel once more, who's to say the military force who set it up in the first place has come to remove it? If innocent lives are taken by carelessness of soldiers, who'd be accountable? Obviously, when it reaches media outlets, they'd blame it on the military in general. But-hey, uhm. Who's gonna stop the HECU anyway, the Warcrime police? This is the inherent problem with the Geneva Convention, it's really hard to enforce and only covers the countries that signed in to it. I'd probably also take it that the mines are anti-personnel so what'd set them off is lighter than a truck. So a mine with too much sand on it might just blow up tossing more sand around.
1:27:45 that's because you miss the doubleshots most of the time, or hit them with just the edge of bullet spread :) You're mostly wasting ammo and lowering your damage with the longer reloads, you have twice the chance to hit if you use single shots, unless you're really close
If you dont pick up the hive hand right away and you pick it up after you help the security gaurd, he will have something funny to say about the animation
No, he was referring to a cat which they used to test the teleporter that you use to get out of Kleiners lab at the start of the "A Red Letter Day" chapter in HL2.
