The Xen remake single-handedly transformed this part of the game from something I've hated and skipped for over 20 years into one of my favorite parts of the game.

Remember, the chapter "Xen" in the original was only one single map. The island where you have to turn on the big portal is based on that original map.
Isn't it remarkable how one bad remaster Half Life Source could inspire fans to create something of this magnitude? Xen went from rocks floating in space, to still rocks floating in space, to having a majestic aquatic like alien rainforest in space. That's quite the trip. And yes I believe you went about playing the games in the correct order and timeframe. It's basically the same experience we had. Also I recommend you eventually play Bioshock 2. It has a lot of qualities you would like
The original xen felt gloomy and empty. It was like once you got teleported then you are cut off with earth and left alone to fight an unknown being waiting for you. But now the case is different in this new xen they send you supplys and stuff to help you to keep continuing your journey. They are watching you progress and chearing you on for the best. And man xen is like a wild life of alien planet everything looks and feels alive.

Don't know if you noticed but many of the technology in Xen like the control consoles at 1:00:16 are starkly reminiscent of Combine technology, which definitely helps visually represent the impact the Combine has had on the species that reside in Xen. It's a neat little detail that can easily be overlooked.
This chapter blew my mind. As a kid my dad showed me half-life 2 for the first time and eventually i played the franchise as my second ever first person shooter game after fallout new vegas, and boy let me tell you that when i replayed xen in black mesa it blew my mind so much, litterally been waiting for this episode to see that reaction haha. Also mapo, keep up the amazing work, so many times where you're reactions to stuff in games where the reactions felt so relatable and paired with tht natural curiosity, always cool stuff to watch!
Original Half Life Xen gave the feeling of desolation, isolation in a hostile environment. Black Mesa Xen gives the feeling of the environment being alien and dangerous but also incredibly beautiful. The Original HLXen is more accurate to the Lore but I am blown away at every BM play through. Crowbar went above and beyond to make the worst/rushed part of the first game into one of the most incredible experiences. More than worthy for this franchise.

I love the new updated long jump. Comparing it to the original really puts it a step up. Being able to jump any direction, three boosts, as well as landing jets! Truly genius and feels logical from black mesa facility.
I sure was looking forward to this. I've played Black Mesa 2 times before they finished the game (Xen release) and boi, it was worth the wait. The base game was already incredible, but this blew my mind (I'm a sucker for incredible sci-fi / fantasy skyboxes). Incredible, vibrant colors (one of the many reasons I loved Subnautica and I bet you will too... if you have not played it before you started this channel).

Not sure if its necessarily "intended". Valve seems to be sticking to the whole 'Xen is ooey-gooey fungal growths' since they brought that style of material back for Half-Life Alyx. Black Mesa's Xen is more rock-based.

The way they remade Xen is amazing. It truly feels like a fitting and perfect conclusion to the original half life now instead of a slightly unfinished slog like the original was imo.
Man the HEV zombie was SUCH a cool idea that they didn’t do nearly enough with. I think I’d have preferred less of them, but have them be a lot harder to kill. Instead they are just reskinned HECU zombies, effectively. The Zombines in HL2 at least did something different in addition to being armored. Maybe the HEV zombies should’ve been able to long-jump at you or something.
Walking into the remade Xen for the first time is a moment I will never forget. It was right when COVID was becoming real, I was 25, living in an apartment in an amazing city in Pittsburgh. It was exactly what I needed at the time.
Damn, Mapo was so cool and collected through this entire chapter. I think it took me a good three times as long to get through, losing my shit constantly surrounded by hostile wildlife. Especially those Ichthyosaurs, which I directed my entire arsenal at before even thinking of setting foot in a body of water.
Sickened by how quickly Mapo navigated the laser trip mines. I feel like I spent 30 minutes on that section. When I finally got through it I needed to take a break. That was a year ago.
Fun fact. The gonarch you can actually skip fighting, and kill in an alternate way by a single button press. There’s even an achievement for doing it that way!
This is a source thing, but explosions don’t apply around corners, so if you even get an explosion with an enemy around the tiniest of walls they won’t get hurt at all. I think that applies to most of the explosives you’ve used throughout the series. It’s just a source quirk
I'm loving the playthrough as always, and I'm glad you are loving the Xen levels. It is mindblowing how much work the devs put into it, and it is well worth the wait. If you are interested in another game with fun exploration and platforming mechanics, and cool environments similar to Xen, you might be interested in playing A Story About My Uncle.
Some unpopular thoughts here. Yes, Xen in BM is really beautiful and breathtaking. It is colourful, boundless, much bigger than in vanilla HL, and more advanced in terms of the level design, graphics and sounds. It has many faces, and it REALLY makes Freeman feel guilty for human invasion, which his colleagues are responsible for. But... On the other side, it's very different from the original concept. The original Xen is a world that came out of the stories of H.P. Lovecraft, as well as many other concepts of HL (the G-Man character, e.g.). A mysterious, unfriendly place, with strange creatures huddling on miserable pieces of land hanging in unearthly and bottomless sky. Living soil, funguses, strange hair-like plants, muscular trees with sharp tips, tentacles, sprites - all this doesn't look like anything earthly. The original Xen disorients Freeman with its strangeness, puts pressure on his consciousness, accustomed to Earth-like architecture, flora and fauna. But in BM, along with concepts from HL1, there are pretty ordinary plants, mushrooms, jungles, soil and rocks. What is it, Half-Life or planet Pandora from "Avatar" movie? Have we seen such earthly flora in HL:Alyx, for example? No, it was similar to Xen from vanilla HL1, not BM. I'm not trying here to defame BM or belittle CC's work in any way. I just want to warn Mapo against the popular misconceptions intrinsic to novice HL fans. BM is a truly excellent game and a worthy fan remake. But, despite its best, it's not a canonical part of the HL series. It differs from vanilla HL1 in many ways and it can't replace HL1. It only allows us to see HL1 events with a fresh look. So, again, kudos to Mapo to play the original game first.
I don't see why it can't be a canonical part of Half-Life. It hits all the same points as the OG and still features flora that eventually appeares in Alyx. I think their take on Xen is a big improvement. The variety of the different areas really lends to the idea that it's a border world. Flora and fauna from different dimensions converging in one place. It fits the narrative better. Why can't it look like Pandora for a short section in the first chapter? It's a beautiful spectacle and works in contrast with the desolate locations closer to the Nihilanth. It allows that dread to build up overtime which is more effective. Personally, I think Black Mesa is just the better game and in series marathons I always play it instead of the OG. I'd still recommend people play the original beforehand to really appreciate it though.

I am very struck by how fast Gordon walks in your game. As far as I know, the speed was adapted to the one it has in Half Life 2. Did you modify any parameter in the menu? 🤔

But the truth is that I prefer a thousand times the mobility of the 2, more leisurely and less giddy. I guess he set this speed to get through the game faster, which leads me to think that he did the gameplay out of obligation and didn't really want to play the title. Because at that speed you miss a lot of details of the title. And we can attest to that because those of us who play it realize that many, many details were overlooked for going so fast. A pity, but good. It has the concept that it is a simple mod when it is a full-fledged video game and completely canon in the saga. So I guess he didn't give it the importance that a title of this caliber deserves with so much work behind it.

Autorun disables the animation of running because aiming would be really awkward. And to be fair, the gameplay of the game is designed and intended to be played like that, always running, never stopping that's why the devs added auto run to the game and that's why they gave the players the sliding mechanics.
I feel like this was always SUPPOSED to be the best part in the original game. I remember being excited right before going through the portal my first time. But hey, it got rushed. Hard. Almost unplayable. What this team created was nothing short of magnificent.
The new way to do the long jump is legitimately the only thing this Xen remake does a lot worse than the original. It's just so awkward to press compared to the crouch jump.
It's just pressing space-bar twice. It's not awkward. It's a big improvement. You can long jumb in all directions even when not facing the direction you jump which makes fighting the Gonarch and Nihilanth more fun and engaging. The landing jets are really helpful and you can do a small double jump which can also help at times. It's much better than running, then crouching, and then jumping. It went from using three buttons to two.
@@blueshark7385 They could have made it multi-direction even with keeping the crouch jump controls. I'm not talking about that part, the movement of it is much better. I just find pressing the same key repeatedly to be more awkward than pressing two different keys at the same time. Now that I think about it though, they also changed that you have to hold shift to run by default, so running and long jumping would be impossible unless you turn on auto run. That's probably one of the reasons they did that. Ah well.
lol ya before playing black mesa i replayed half life and i feel like it caused me to focus more on comparing between the two than over just enjoying the game (I still did enjoy it tho just not as much as i would have if i didn't play half life before it)

Is not the worst thing, it is better than the original for sure but it certainly drags a bit, especially Interloper, that level sucks in both games, but I prefer Half Life 1 version of that level at least is shorter. They cut parts of On a Rail but made Interloper far too long, doesn't make sense in my opinion.

xen is amazing, hands down for the dev team, but it s not half-life.. it looks like avatar's pandora, or the worlds from myst franchise....oh by the way, you should try that series, especially myst II exile
It's quite varied though. Areas at the start of Xen are full of life, but as you get closer to the Nihilanth Xen grows more desolate and simular to how it was an in Half-Life. It's absolutely still Half-life.
I also think its better to play Black Mesa after you play all of the other Half Life games. Especially because since it uses a more modern version of Source, the graphics are even better than Half Life 2 in my opinion. It would be weird to play Black Mesa in place of Half life, only to have Half Life 2 look worse.
That's literally just one area of Xen. It's not 'just a jungle'. It's extremely varied. As you get closer to the Nihilanth, it starts to get more lifeless and desolate like og Xen. I think it's a big improvement. It's a border world afterall. All this varied flora comes from other worlds leaking in.

Seeing Xen as intended is great. Valve seemed to like that they nailed Xen right based on what Valve intended to do. Well, if they had done it fully.

What an awesome idea to turn xen from a semi-desolate world to one full of life. Some of its design reminds me of Myst 3: Exile.
It kind of makes sense for it to be full of flora and most of it, fauna, because you know, every single strange creature you faced was born there.

I feel like this was always SUPPOSED to be the best part in the original game. I remember being excited right before going through the portal my first time. But hey, it got rushed. Hard. Almost unplayable.
What this team created was nothing short of magnificent.
The new way to do the long jump is legitimately the only thing this Xen remake does a lot worse than the original. It's just so awkward to press compared to the crouch jump.

It's just pressing space-bar twice. It's not awkward. It's a big improvement.
You can long jumb in all directions even when not facing the direction you jump which makes fighting the Gonarch and Nihilanth more fun and engaging. The landing jets are really helpful and you can do a small double jump which can also help at times.
It's much better than running, then crouching, and then jumping. It went from using three buttons to two.
@@blueshark7385 They could have made it multi-direction even with keeping the crouch jump controls. I'm not talking about that part, the movement of it is much better. I just find pressing the same key repeatedly to be more awkward than pressing two different keys at the same time.
Now that I think about it though, they also changed that you have to hold shift to run by default, so running and long jumping would be impossible unless you turn on auto run. That's probably one of the reasons they did that. Ah well.

lol ya before playing black mesa i replayed half life and i feel like it caused me to focus more on comparing between the two than over just enjoying the game (I still did enjoy it tho just not as much as i would have if i didn't play half life before it)
Ok, I need a positive take on the new Xen after DarkViperAU trashed it like it is the worst thing ever developed.
@teebles I believe his opinion to be valid from his point of view, but maybe he's easily angered? The new Xen is not as bad as it would seem if one only sees Matto's reaction on RUclips.
And yes, I also hope he plays HL2+EPs.
Is not the worst thing, it is better than the original for sure but it certainly drags a bit, especially Interloper, that level sucks in both games, but I prefer Half Life 1 version of that level at least is shorter.
They cut parts of On a Rail but made Interloper far too long, doesn't make sense in my opinion.
Interloper was the only part of new Xen that sucked

xen is amazing, hands down for the dev team, but it s not half-life.. it looks like avatar's pandora, or the worlds from myst franchise....oh by the way, you should try that series, especially myst II exile
It's quite varied though. Areas at the start of Xen are full of life, but as you get closer to the Nihilanth Xen grows more desolate and simular to how it was an in Half-Life. It's absolutely still Half-life.

Seeing the thought, care, blood, sweat an tears the Crowbar Collective put into this makes me weirdly proud to be a Half-Life fan.
I also think its better to play Black Mesa after you play all of the other Half Life games. Especially because since it uses a more modern version of Source, the graphics are even better than Half Life 2 in my opinion. It would be weird to play Black Mesa in place of Half life, only to have Half Life 2 look worse.
It's just a jungle. This is supposed to be an alien dimension. Totally botched the atmosphere of the original.
That's literally just one area of Xen. It's not 'just a jungle'. It's extremely varied. As you get closer to the Nihilanth, it starts to get more lifeless and desolate like og Xen.
I think it's a big improvement. It's a border world afterall. All this varied flora comes from other worlds leaking in.
