    If we include Metroidvania type of game as some of them definitly have RPG element, I would include Bloodstained Ritual of the Night (release 2019 so it is in the 3 years mark ^^) that game was a blast to play if you enjoy Symphony of the Night and Aria of Sorrow it's basically their spiritual successor and it's as amazing as them if not more.

    • @ophidianmind333
      @ophidianmind333 3 года назад +1

      Indeed. I would consider Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night to be a form of action rpg (as well as Igavania-style metroidvanias in general) and it's frequently marketed as one by the publisher. This game immediately clicked with me and I knew I was playing something amazing right from the start. It's easily my favorite game released in the 21st century as well as already having become one of my favorite games of all time. In fact, I recently included in on a desert island list limited to ten games and it was one of my least difficult picks.

    • @tchitchouan
      @tchitchouan 3 года назад

      Metroidvanias are not action rpgs, they are their own distinctive genre.

    • @ophidianmind333
      @ophidianmind333 3 года назад

      @@tchitchouan The case isn't that simple. Metroidvanias can be action rpgs but they aren't inherently because it depends on whether the rpg elements are present. For example, the "Igavania" subgenre of metroidvanias are also action rpgs because those strong rpg elements are one of the key defining features of an Igavania. Many 2D side-scrolling action rpgs from the 80s and early 90s would be labelled as metroidvanias if they were released today.
      Some metroidvanias are also very similar to normal action platformers, but that doesn't mean that action platformers are metroidvanias. It is all about where the categories overlap. Keep in mind that definitions of genres have fuzzy lines at the borders and the more specific you attempt to be in defining a genre, the more subjective your criteria will be.
      Also, some people are of the opinion that the term "metroidvania" describes something too vague for it to be considered a genre on its own and it is viewed as a mere term of convenience that has gained an unfortunate popularity of usage. I am not of this opinion because I view all genre labels as being mere terms of convenience to describe something in a way that others might at least understand on the surface.

    I have always had issues with Tales combat and especially enemy diversity. For me, Arise, albeit having the best iteration of Tales combat so far, is still a chore to play. There is like 10 types of enemies and everything else are reskins/recolors. Entering a fifth amazing region only to fight the same wolf, but this time blue is just a letdown. Every enemy is an insane HP sponge and even on easy it takes 10 years to kill anything. I am super drawn to the story, but I just hate the combat.

I played the game on Hard and i thought normal enemies died very fast, even the bosses only took me about 20-25 mins (no dlcs needed). Tales of Arise is better than Vesperia gameplay wise, but music hasn't improved much and the writing still needs work, but at least the worldbuilding is impressive, but I hope they continue to improve in other areas not just graphics and combat. I look at how great Trails series has become and how they improving more and more in every area, so hopefully other JRPG can do this as well.

Very stylish with great characters, a fascinatingly dark story, fun combat, and great music. The environments, and particularly the enemies can get a bit repetitive, but the story is always evolving and keeps you engaged.

    Seems like everyone is in agreement that YSIX, Scarlet Nexus and Tales of Arise are damn good anime action rpgs. Tales of Arise feels different because you have more movement freedom and you don't have to press another button just to free run unlike its predecessors.
    Maybe I'll touch Sakura Wars again. I'm only 1/4 or halfway through the game where the loli has a warrant to be arrested? Yeah.
    God Eater 3 is a damn good game too albeit easier compared to 1 and 2 (just from my experience because I already know the attack patterns of the old aragamis such as Vajra and Chiyou) but some new Aragamis still gave me challenge to die once or twice per run.

It's what t hey EVENTUALLY did in FFXV

    Shin Sakura Wars is very good game (sadly only on PS4), but in my opinion the combat system is the weakest element of this game. Its very repetive musou, with lack of characters, special moves, progression and ... RPG elements. And gameplay is to short. I played all Sakura Wars games (except some spin-offs) and i liked more old turn-based battle system, especially ARMS in SW 3-5, who is prototype of BliTZ from Valkyria Chronicles.

    Astral Chain is such an underrated game. I agree that the controls are a little wonky, but it's still a truly great game. Scarlet Nexus is definitely also an amazing game.
    I've been thinking of trying out Crystar at some point, so after seeing this video, I'm really more inclined to give it a shot at some point.
    I tried the CodeVein demo once recently, and honestly, I really didn't like it. The full version might be better, but I got sick of the demo before I even got to the gameplay itself, because I was forced to sit through a tutorial that tried to teach me way too many game mechanics before I was allowed to just play and have some fun. I keep seeing it at like 80% off on the PS Store, though, so maybe I'll give the full version a shot at some point and just hope I don't get sick of it as fast as I did with the demo... Just gotta get through my backlog of games before taking this risk, though...
