Loved the original Nights of Azure. And then they went and added time limits for the sequel. Limited time is a big no-no for me so I haven't played NoA2 yet. I'd like to add "Death end re;Quest" to the list. A hidden gem from Idea Factory that is more serious than their other (still lovely) more fanservice focused games.
I'm amazed how you find time playing JRPGs. Insane dedication.I am a 33-year old gamer but my choice of games have changed. I'm more inclined to playing short games (less than 10 hours story mode) or sports/ fighting games.
So glad CRYSTAR is getting some recognition! It has a beautiful art style and the OST is easily one of my favorites. Not to mention that the story/voice acting is also really good. Highly recommend it!
I like Zenki Zero but I donno how "humanely" the game treats characters you are encouraged to torture as much as possible before letting them die. Like, oh, Zen has been poisoned, well, might as well load him up with our inventory and overfeed him so he shits his pants and dies exhausted, preferably killed by a baboon, that way he'll gain a lot of perks when we get his clone!
Ugh this is such a great list of games. I'm always happy to see Langrisser pop up with that damn amazing music. I have yet to play Oninaki which is a big time want for me. Since I aim for only physical copies of JRPGs if at all possible the most affordable one in this list is Exist Archive for like 12 bucks and its beautiful and fun though I have not finished it. Nights of Azure surprised me with how good it is. I would like the physical of Relayer and Brigandine but I have no idea how I'm going to find a well priced copy of it. Such a great video!
Sell one of your kidneys. If you're concerned you don't have enough money to buy a physical copy of a game you want, you should consider selling unnecessary body parts. You only need one kidney to live and Jesus was wise enough to bless us all with a second kidney for a reason.
Such a great list. At the time of writing the first two games are on sale on Steam: 'Blue Reflection Second Light' is one of the best games I played last year without doubt, it might look like a typical JRPG but once you spend a bit of time and get to know the characters and how each of those characters areas (heartscapes) tie in with them it's truly special. If you're on the fence than watch the anime that's available which sets up the events of the game. This'll give a rough idea of what to expect in terms of themes. Another game made by the same team is 'Nights of Azure' a solid hack and slash and a story that is surprisingly solid. I'm playing 'Crystar' at the moment on Switch and it runs really well, the game itself is worth the price for the art style and OST alone; as for the story I can't say much as I haven't finished it but it's keeping me invested so far. As for 'Fuga Melodies of Steel' it's a bloody shame that this game didn't break even, if you're looking for something truly unique then pick this up. I can't stress this enough.
How's the stories on Fuga? I've been back and forth on it for awhile now....im most likely going to pick it up as um pretty sure it's in a light sale on the eshop at the moment. And I want these more unique types to do well, aswell.
Don't forget to give the prequel of BR Second Light a try though, same composer so same awesome OST along with prolly some answers to questions you might have even after finishing the anime and sequel.
@@peekatchu921 The first 'Blue Reflection' might have it's issues but that OST and UI is incredible. And it's on sale at the moment on Steam till the 9th.
@@michaeloconnor1281 I might be in the minority (esp with the crowd that likes Indie RPGs which I also very much do), but I didn't really enjoy Fuga that much. Yes it was unique, but I don't think it did anything really well except for the art style and maybe the initial story premise of kids driving a tank. Also the game mechanics I thought were shallow, especially if you compare them to any legitimate SRPG (this game is not that). Anyway not terrible -- but imo worth watching a let's play for a few hours before deciding whether you want to pick it up
Blue Reflection: Second Light is strangely reminiscent of the Atelier games. The first game has much less crafting in it. Oddly, I have the "premium box" for Nights of Azure in Japanese - still in its shrinkwrap; I picked it up for cheap when in Japan some years ago. I later played the English port (but didn't get around to finishing it...) I think I played everything on this list except for Relayer and Langrissier.
It certainly gives off the vibes of them wondering how to improve the first Blue Reflection game, realizing that Atelier Ryza sold well, then just smashing the two together.
Nights of Azure was amazing. It's the one of the list I can fully recommend wo worries. Although Nights of Azure 2 was kind of a let down to me because they used the worst ending from 1 as cannon. u.u Crystal and Blue Reflection are pretty good too! It was kinda of a surprise to see how good Blue Reflection 2nd is, it was way better than Monark and many other JRPGs at the time I was playing. lol
I have to add another title, Death End: Request Otherwise, good list. Though I personally don't care for the strategy RPG titles, I prefer Action/RT but TB is fine as well.
I got Blue Reflection Second Light for Switch after playing the demo and checking out some reviews, good stuff. The demo of Oninaki was cool, haven't bought yet. I've seen reviews of Crystar, but currently too much on my plate right now. I played Langrisser 1 when we knew it as Warsong for the Genesis in the west, that difficulty gives me nightmares. Haven't got the remakes yet.
Fuga es SICK AF, and the story is great, specially the part when the tank wants you to kill the kids. More people should play that game, its amazing and its supposed to be like a prequel if im not mistaken to the DS Solratorobo Red the hunter
I actualy played and finished first Blue Reflection on PS4, and it was really charming and unique experience... but now I got also Switch and I cant decide on which version of sequel to buy.
Exist Archive and Knights of Azure! Found the second knights on PSN but haven't played it yet. After seeing this, want the first now. Archive speaks to my traditional over all else jrpg soul. Keep up the lord's work Erik!
some awesome recommendations, I have Crytstar and look forward to playing it someday, some of the others are on my various wish lists, the others I'm definitely gonna be looking into
I played only one game on this list, Nights of Azure, which I played on PS3 due to not having a PS4 in the time, and loved it, despite not finishing it (due to the langauge barrier). I haven't played Blue Refelection 2, but loved the first game so much.
This a good list of games for the PS4 and Switch I've never heard of before, they all look fun to play and I would to try them if I ever get the chance to play them, thanks for showing us a lot of cool games Erick Landon RPG nice job 👍
I'm waiting on my Relayer preorder from Play Asia. That and ChronoCross. I'm adamant about owning physical copies when available. I can't wait to give relayer a chance. I'm finishing up Triangle Strategy now and am looking forward to another SRPG
See, I have been wanting Crystar since it was revealed..But since no stores sell it, i have no idea where is legit to buy it from. The amazon listings I've seen seem to come from different shops that I have never heard of, and I've been screwed over this way before plenty of times. Where is a legit good way to get a physical copy of it?
Man I loooooved playing Oninaki - just the right amount of grinding. I just wish that when you're unlocking the soul's past, you had control of the speed of text on the screen cause the subtitles disappear too fast and it's white on white! I'm glad to see CRYSTAR here cause I've been eyeballing it as a potential to pickup.
Thank you very much for the lists and your review. May I kindly suggest to put the game title and consoles its available for at the corner of the video ?
Huge problem with nights of azure 1 and 2 both games have an annoying time limit and framerate issues and poor camera angles. other than that the music and special moves are cool story was okay, music is definitely the stronger side of it
i played zanki zero , blue reflection tie and the demo to relayer. all good games but i need to wait til relayer goes down in price because there are other Jrpg"s i need to get.
@@scoutisabelle I don't know how many he has played, but in his top there is always one(I didn't say they are explicit harcore either haha). With that he can rank them in a list from worst to best without them being A or B. Also he can put them according to the amount of fanservice or hours played (if they are games that he didn't finish like others but this time because of their theme).
With Langrisser, if you don't like the remaster graphics because they look cheap, generic or whatever, you can change to the original graphics/art style at any point.
I have the imported physical NTSC edition of exist archive on the PS4 (living in a PAL region) and it was a decent game but it froze for me like three or four times randomly in missions that I was over an hour into and so I ended up moving on to something else at the time. I don't know if it was because I was playing it on a PAL PS4 or if it was a bug that affected others but I had to bench it in the hopes of an update to fix the problem, haven't been back to it since but may give it another go.
Im still in the middle of trying to finish as many things as I can in blue reflection second light before starting ng+ later for trophy besides that just recently got atelier Ryza 1 & 2
Games I played from the list: Sanki Zero PS4 (not finished) Langrisser 1&2 Switch (not finished) Alliance Alive Switch (not finished) ...I should play them, but it will take a while to reach them in my catalogue.
Fuga, Brigadine and Nights of Azure look fun. For all three, it's nice to see games with protags besides humans (sorta, for the second and third). Fuga looks like Furry Advance Wars, and I really do like the chonky guy. Brigadine reminds me of Master of Monsters for the Sega Genesis, a game I grew up playing a lot. Nights of Azure looks okay, and has some mon-taming elements to it from the looks of it.
I had been wanting to see if I could get into Brigandine. It looks a bit like Koei's Dynasty/Samurai Warriors Empires games. Those were always quite fun.
Already have a few of these but definitely intrigued by Brigandine as it looks similar to Dark Wizard on Sega CD which I loved and Nights of Azure as Gust has really been growing on me as a developer.
Oninaki has such an amazing story, i loved that game, played it when it came out.. the frame rate/crashing issues are super annoying though. Blue Reflection is a great series, definitely deserves more attention. Crystar i thought had pretty good characters/story, but i got bored of the gameplay half way in due to its repetitiveness. Relayer i got the collectors edition of recently, played the first 2 hours or so to get a feel for the game, not sure when i'll get back to playing it, but i did enjoy the little time i spent on it. Nights of Azure i was actually playing some of it yesterday, so far so good.. especially the fan service.
I've played Nights of Azure, Oninaki, and am currently playing through Exist Archive. All the rest of the games I have heard about, but most don't catch my interest. I am however, interested in picking up Fuga sometime soon.
Crystar is pretty good, actually. It showed up randomly on Amazon recommendations, and despite never having heard of it, I bought it right then and there.
Only played a little bit if Nights of Azure but it was a ton of fun. If you hate over the top fan service tho, you will want to avoid it. He wasn't kidding about not showing the level up part.
I appreciate your efforts in attempting to remain neutral on this subject of if I have, or haven't, played these JRPGs but I regret to inform you that the energy/effort that you've spent on maintaining your neutral position has gone to waste since I have, in fact, played NONE of these JRPGs. Forgive me.
10: Zanki Zero is amazing but due to the censorship I played the Japanese version. 9: Crystar is an incredible experience though it does have some repetition issues near the end, not as bad as Bravely Default but it got pretty close. This one deserves a sequel, I really enjoyed it. 8: I haven’t heard of this, I’ll add it to my list. 7: I played the first Blue Reflection but I have yet to get to the sequel. 6: This one needs more attention. Why does it always get overlooked? 5: This one was announced alongside a two other games that CC was developing. I think one of them was called Ogre something? I’m looking forward to trying all of these. 4: Oninaki, I have to admit…I forgot about this one. Maybe i’ll give it another go since the story seems to be interesting. 3: Never heard of it. 2: I wish Langrisser made a real comeback with the others in the series man…god they were so good. 1: 0.0 I think I’m going to play this now…
I actually seen/played most of these obscures (especially Nights of Azure), but Fuga's been on my "interesting" radar for a while. Might get it on a Switch sale. As for Oninaki, it's a pretty good game, story wise. Dunno if an NG+ got patched in, but I do recommend it for anyone looking for a brief--but deep--adventure.
Zanzi zero was on sale recently. I almost played it but I was tired of this kind of game at the time. Maybe get it someday. It might still be on sale online.
ive heard of most of these, crystar looks like my kind of game, i keep trying to get into oninaki since i was a very big fan of the first 2 tokyo rpg games but havent yet and will try it again
Nights of Azure and Crystar I have played and owned. Crystar I have 100% but I need to replay Nights of Azure again because I don't remember the story that well to play the sequel. Heard of the other games but Blue Reflection been on my list for a while. I'm seriously going to buy that if that one friend can stop talking about Trails of Cold Steel every free moment I have.
Blue Reflection 2 is an excellent game. It was great improvement over the first, which was worth playing but nothing amazing. Both Nights of Azure games are good. Personally I think the second one is better overall, but there are definitely some things the first game does better. Langrisser I picked up on sale for cheap. Its just sitting in my steam library, just haven't made the time to try it yet. Crystar has been on my radar, but I'm really unsure about it. I've at least heard of most of the rest of the list, but not played. In particular the tactical / strategy RPGs are something I really have to be in the mood for. On top of that many games in the genre are brutally difficult, moreso than I want to deal with. For example, I enjoy games like Disgaea and Shining Force, but Yggdra Union was a bit too much.
I played...a decent amount if JRPGs but not a ton. But I adore Fuga. Its not perfect, the characters could have been handled better although they still grew on me ALOT and there are some quality of live Features missing but I honestly love this game more then iconic games like Persona 5 and Final Fantasy IX. Not that I dont love these games aswell. I never felt this much the responsebility of leading this party, these children to victory, which is both intense and satisfaying. And the Gameplay is just the most fun I ever had in a turn based JRPG. I also love the vocal tracks.
Found this channel only recently and it's given me the JRPG bug again and really enjoying watching tbe back catalogue. Brigandine is one of my most favorites games back in PS1, but unfortunately, I still haven't has chance to play the sequel 🙄🙄🙄
I'm enjoying the Blue Reflection sequel on switch. Hadn't heard of the others.
Love your fate poster in the background.
Im still in the middle of trying to finish as many things as I can in blue reflection second light before starting ng+ later for trophy besides that just recently got atelier Ryza 1 & 2
Great video. Never heard of any of these games.
Very good list, thank you for bringing out these gems we didnt know of
Great lineup bro
I heard of Blue Reflection before. Never got my hands on it though. Did seem pretty interesting too.
Love this list! Keep up the good work!
Games I played from the list:
Sanki Zero PS4 (not finished)
Langrisser 1&2 Switch (not finished)
Alliance Alive Switch (not finished)
...I should play them, but it will take a while to reach them in my catalogue.
Already have a few of these but definitely intrigued by Brigandine as it looks similar to Dark Wizard on Sega CD which I loved and Nights of Azure as Gust has really been growing on me as a developer.
wow... the astral plane in astral chain looks almost exactly like crystar
Just spent a ton of money for physical copies because of this list on a few I didn't have lol
This is the first time I’ve played half of your top ten list and heard of all of them
Guess I must be an RPG freak since I own or have on my wishlist all but 1 of those games lol nice list though I do want to play all of them eventually
Wait, is there really a Steam release for Relayer? I cannot find it on Steam
I've played Nights of Azure, Oninaki, and am currently playing through Exist Archive.
All the rest of the games I have heard about, but most don't catch my interest. I am however, interested in picking up Fuga sometime soon.
Crystar is pretty good, actually. It showed up randomly on Amazon recommendations, and despite never having heard of it, I bought it right then and there.
surprised you didn't mention that growlanser is a spinoff series of langrisser
Only played a little bit if Nights of Azure but it was a ton of fun. If you hate over the top fan service tho, you will want to avoid it. He wasn't kidding about not showing the level up part.
I appreciate your efforts in attempting to remain neutral on this subject of if I have, or haven't, played these JRPGs but I regret to inform you that the energy/effort that you've spent on maintaining your neutral position has gone to waste since I have, in fact, played NONE of these JRPGs.
Forgive me.
If you were to play one of these now, which one would you pick?
@@MiamiSunrise
Langrieser or Zanki Zero.
And you?
I really appreciate your content Eric 👌
I also prefer the first Nights of Azure. But both worthwhile!
I dont see Relayer on Steam, is it under a different name? 🤔
No, and it's only on PS4
Blue reflection 1, Nights of Azure 1... I am still looking for a physical in Europe... Thanks for the video!
Brigandine is so good. One of the reasons why I got a switch along with SMT5.
Ive really wanna play Granblue Fantasy Relink, Valkyrie Elysium and Eiyuden Chronicles next year
Crystar is an absolute gem
1: 0.0 I think I’m going to play this now…
For #8 I believe Relayer comes out in USA PS4 & PS5 5/20/2022
I actually seen/played most of these obscures (especially Nights of Azure), but Fuga's been on my "interesting" radar for a while. Might get it on a Switch sale.
As for Oninaki, it's a pretty good game, story wise. Dunno if an NG+ got patched in, but I do recommend it for anyone looking for a brief--but deep--adventure.
Zanzi zero was on sale recently. I almost played it but I was tired of this kind of game at the time. Maybe get it someday. It might still be on sale online.
Sweet T-shirt!
Am I about to buy a Vita game in 2022??
Exist Archive was easy to find until recently physically as well
Bought a Vita on 2022. It's never too late.
You sound just like Prince Oberyn Martell from Game of Thrones LMAO
You even look like the actor that plays him, Pedro Pascal.
Hey thanks for making this list- there were a few titles you mentioned that I was considering purchasing and a few more I hadn't heard of.
ive heard of most of these, crystar looks like my kind of game, i keep trying to get into oninaki since i was a very big fan of the first 2 tokyo rpg games but havent yet and will try it again
I bought Fuga because youre recomendation, great game i like it a lot.
Where the character is from at the thumbnail ?
Blue reflection 2
For example, I enjoy games like Disgaea and Shining Force, but Yggdra Union was a bit too much.
nights of azure is really, really good
I think I got Exist Archive for like 6 bucks on ebay shipped. NEW like a month or so ago. Havnt played but its on my massive list.
I didn't play zanki zero because they censored the shit out of it
I played...a decent amount if JRPGs but not a ton.
