Mine’s a little goosed by not really playing JRPGs between 2001 (FFX) and 2012 (Bravely Default) but here are mine for the systems I owned:
    NES - Final Fantasy
    SNES - Chrono Trigger
N64 - Holy Magic Century (only one I played)
Gamecube - Skies of Arcadia (cheating a bit, I played it on Dreamcast)
    Wii - Xenoblade Chronicles
    Wii U - haven’t played any
    Switch - Xenoblade Chronicles 2
    Gameboy - Pokemon
GBA - Final Fantasy IV (I-VI didn’t come out here (UK) until the later ports)
DS - Final Fantasy III Remake
    3DS - Bravely Default
    MasterSystem - haven’t played any
    MegaDrive - Shining Force 2
    Sega CD/32X - haven’t played any
Sega Saturn - Shining Force 3
Dreamcast - Grandia II (discounting Skies of Arcadia which I picked for Gamecube)
GameGear - Shining Force Sword of Hajya
    PS1 - Final Fantasy VII
    PS2 - Final Fantasy X
    PS3/Xbox 360 - Tales of Vesperia
    PS4 - Nier Automata
PSP - Breath of Fire III
PS Vita - Hyper Dimension Neptunia ReBirth

Honestly the PSP was just a good generation for jrpgs and RPGs in general that I also have a hard time deciding what would be one of my favorites

    • @Erdie5

Yeah, the PSP was nuts for JRPGs. And the majority of them are good too.

    • @ifrit1937
      @ifrit1937 Год назад +1

@@Erdie5 Eh yes an no tbh...yes if we count all jrpgs ever made on the system including those never released in the west, no if we count only the ones released in the west as the only good ones I can think of would be Trails in the Sky 1 (though 2 never made it to western psp...took the Vita and a re-release of 1 on it for that to happen and then Sky 3 was PC only), Tales of Eternia (EU edition...which still pales in comparison to the Japan version as like Phantasia all skits were removed outside of story related ones), Crisis Core FF7, and the SO 1 and 2 remakes. Outside of those I mainly remember disappointments from the jrpgs that made it to the west (Blade Dancer Lineage of Light topping that list lol).
If you knew Japanese it and the Vita made almost all other consoles look like a joke in comparison to how many decent to great jrpgs were on them...if you didn't you're catalogue is far more limited.

I definitely strongly disagree with the consensus when it comes to the DS and 3DS, as my favorite game on the former is the Final Fantasy IV remake, and on the later, SMT Strange Journey Redux. In fact, I think I may have the most unpopular opinions when it comes to the DS/3DS, since Chrono Trigger, FE Awakening, and Bravely Default are all games I've had a hard time getting into. Lol.

As a fan of both FF6 and Chrono Trigger I’d actually have to go with Chrono Trigger because it’s one of the few Square games that feels complete, and that may be because there was a lot of Dragon Quest developers working on it. If you look at a lot of Square games they tend to start super ambitious and then have to cut out a lot of content which makes the game have odd holes in it after all is said and done.

Here are my favorite JRPGs for each system that I have played:
    Master System: Phantasy Star
    NES: Sweet Home
    Game Boy: Final Fantasy Adventure
Game Gear: Shining Force: The Sword of Hajya
Game Boy Color: Lufia: The Legend Returns
Genesis: Phantasy Star IV (which is tied with SMT: Nocturne as my absolute favorite game of all time)
    Sega CD: Dark Wizard
SNES: Final Fantasy VI (Though Chrono Trigger and Shin Megami Tensei II would be in a tie as a close 2nd)
TG-16: Shiryou Sensen: War of the Dead
Turbo CD: Ys Books I & II
    Saturn: Albert Odyssey
    PS1: Suikoden II
    N64: Ogre Battle 64
Game Boy Advance: Fire Emblem: The Blazing Blade
    Dreamcast: Grandia II
    Gamecube: Skies of Arcadia Legends
PS2: Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne (as mentioned above, it is in a tie for my absolute favorite game of all time)
    PSP: Ys Seven
Xbox 360: Dark Souls (It is technically a JRPG even though it isn't in a typical JRPG style. Let me have my one troll entry. 😆)
    Wii: Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn
DS: Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey
3DS: Shin Megami Tensei IV (Another high up on my all-time favorites list.)
Switch: Shin Megami Tensei V (I would have picked the Nocturne remaster, but I already chose Nocturne for PS2. Phantasy Star IV is also included in Sega Genesis Classics, but I already chose that game for Genesis. SMT V is still a very worthy choice and it isn't far behind those other two on my list of all-time favorite games.)
PS4: A tie between Ys IX and Persona 5 Royal
    PS5: Ys VIII
If I haven't listed a system on here, it's because I haven't played many JRPGs for it. For example, I did play quite a few RPGs on the original Xbox, but they were all Western RPGs. My top 3 JRPG series are SMT, Phantasy Star, and Ys, that's probably not a surprise after seeing my list here.

For the SNES, obviously it's Chrono Trigger.
For GameCube, it's Skies of Arcadia Legends.
For Gameboy, I like Final Fantasy Legend III.
On Gameboy Color, it's the Zelda Oracles games, even they're more action adventure than action RPG.
On Gameboy Advance, it's the Golden Sun duology.
On Nintendo DS, it's a tie between Dragon Quest IV and Dragon Quest V.
    For Playstation, it's Suikoden II.

I have dragon force on the Saturn and played it to death, also have panzer dragoon saga and shining force 3. I consider dragon force more as a strategy game than an Rpg but it's still awesome, absolutely loved the other two games I mentioned and finished both, if I had to pick one though, panzer dragoon saga takes it and it has nothing to do with the price tag, it's just an awesome game.
I don't know if anyone has ever played it and it's not an Rpg, but there was a platform game called Astal that is absolutely amazing that I actually bought when I was in the States as a child. I'd actually played the Japanese version previously and was really glad when I found it for sale when I was over there. It still holds up as a great platformer today and still look gorgeous. The aesthetic for a fan of anime is perfect. It's also a two player with a second person drop in and drop out as the bird that helps out the protagonist. Amazing game.

Hmm...My list would be (from consoles I've owned, any not listed I didn't own):
-N64: Paper Mario...more so cause no other real choice that I can think of tbh
-Gamecube: Tales of Symphonia which became my favorite game of all time when I first played it and still has the spot.
-Will: didn't really play many and they were mainly ones like Symphonia Dawn, the follow up to FE: Path of Radiance, Xenoblade 1, and a small handful of others but my pick would be The Last Story...tbh with wii I was more interested in games like Zelda/Mario/etc.
-Wii U: did play Xenoblade X but never got that into it...tbh this one I played far less rpgs than any other so the only real option left would be Monster Hunter Ultimate tbh...didn't really get far in either though (played ultimate on the 3DS too tbh and got further there).
-PS2: Way too many jrpgs on this console but if I was to pick one it'd probably be Tales of the Abyss (pretty much tied with the 2nd best story after Symphonia along with Berseria)...Dragon Quest 8 comes real close though.
-PS3: given how many Tales games released on the console and the fact it's my favorite series you'd figure it'd be it again...but no this one goes to Valkyria Chronicles 1 (3rd favorite series)
-Xbox 360: while it has Vesperia, Lost Odyssey, and Infinite Undiscovery (better than most people complain about tbh) my pick would be Eternal Sonata (came here before PS3 though you didn't get 2 characters new to the PS3 version...it's also the one I got to end game with while haven't gotten that far for the PS3 version yet)
-Game Boy color: Pokemon Silver (pretty much only games I had were Pokemon though I was 7 years old at the time that I got said system)
-Game Boy Advanced: Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones, while you chose Lynn I prefer Erika lol.
    -3DS: Project X Zone
-PSP: Trails in the Sky 1 (2 I had to play on Vita/and re-bought 1 as Xseed gave up PSP for PS Vita, 3 I had to play on PC as Xseed only released it there...1 I did and still have my physical PSP copy lol) and when combined with 2 is imo the best story arc of the Trails series.
PS Vita: Tokyo Xanadu though the EX+ version is quite a bit better due to the additions and a FAR better translation attempt (Aksys got lazy as fuck with the Vita version) it was still the rpg I had the most fun with on the system...Odin Sphere L, Dragon's Crown, Muramasa Rebirth, and Tales of Hearts R all also come very very close as well but Falcom's combination of Trails storytelling and Ys combat put it at the top of the system for me...regardless of Erick's hatred for idols lol.
PS4: still ongoing but as of now I'd give it to either Tales of Arise (most fun I had with a combat system since Tokyo Xanadu on Vita and was the most challenging Tales game in well over a decade (series has become too easy tbh until then due to how you can more or less juggle enemies to death the moment you knock them into the air/stagger them)) or 13 Sentinels Aegis Rim (easily like all Vanillaware games has the best art style on the console along with a great story and pretty much the only Tower Defense combat system that was able to drag me in). Would say Ys9, Valkyria Chronicles 4, Code Vein, DQ11, and Trails of Cold Steel 3 (don't ask me why not 4...I'm not that sure either, I just didn't get into it as much as I did 3 for whatever reason even with it being the end of the CS saga lol) also come close but these 2 are at the top for now.
Switch: still ongoing like PS4 so it an change but it'd be: Octopath Traveler as of now...with that said I've yet to start my Bravely Default II copy I got last Christmas (was too busy re-playing all Star Ocean games in prep for SO 6 as well as playing Elden Ring and Xenoblade 3) and I'll be getting Harvestella and Triangle Strategy this Christmas (so couple weeks) and then Octopath 2 when it comes out as well on top of god knows what in the future further down the line too so like the PS4 this can easily change in a year or two's time. Main reason something that something like one of the Xenoblades doesn't take it even though I like 1 and 2's stories (in the middle of 3 now, just started chapter 5...gonna be blunt the story as of now has been kinda meh with only a slight pickup now...which feels far too late in comparison to 1 and 2 imo) is that I hate the MMO auto attack combat system (especially 1 and X's iteration of it). Ys 9 could also easily be the winner but I played it on PS4 so that'd be a bit iffy counting it tbh so I chose games I actually played on said system.
After thinking about rpgs for each console though I can safely say of those I played the best consoles for rpgs were definitely the PS2, PS4, Vita, and Switch (while I mainly owned many rpgs on PS3 outside of Tales and Valkyria Chronicles none of them were really standouts like the other systems had....only other games may have been Ni no Kuni 1 and Eternal Sonata and the PS3 ports of CS 1 and 2 tbh).
And of course if I was to pick my favorite game of all of these: Tales of Symphonia easily.

I like the Y's games too, but I can't deny the masterwork of Dragon Quest 11. That game rewards you in so many ways and the feeling of completion when you finish it is a mix of sadness the character's story is over, immense satisfaction because the story is great and the challenge is there, and simple contentment as you recollect the journy. The game can take a minute to get into, they ease you in and let you explore a bit and make you scratch your head as to what is actually going on for a while. The characters seem wierd and quirky and even offputting at first, but as you travel with them they grow on you until they feel like family. Character development is not so much that they go do some quest and magically their attitude is different. In this game, the development is simply you get to know them and the cast gets to know each other. It's a very subtle, slow, friendship making process you don;t even realize is happening until you reflect on all of it at the end of the game. I am not ashamed to admit there is a scene in the game that made me tear up, not because of the events but because the reaction the other characters had. none of this excellent writing and development is obvious as you play through, it is never thrown in your face.
To anyone reading this, my only hint for the entire game is MAKE SURE YOU WATCH THE CREDITS TO THE END.
On ALL of the mobile platforms I have only ever enjoyed playing Golden Sun and The Zelda game minnish cap. But I am very biased as I really don;t like portables. As such pokemon isn't even on my radar.
Xenoblade whatever I found to be a very pretty looking errand running annoyingfest that i couldn't make myself play for more then a couple hours before I decided to end my character by fighting some enormous dinosaur looking thing. Never looked back.
FF6 is better then Chrono Trigger. Fanbois gonna hate.
FF9 is better then FF7 in pretty much every way.
I kind of look at the Tales games, Star Ocean, and Y's games as their own genre within the RPG's. Hard to pic a favorite, but I am finding myself really, really enjoying my replay of Tales of Berseria. Maybe it's because I played the remaster of Zesteria recently and am noticing all the little lore things between the two, or maybe it's just the main character yelling DEVOUR! and obliterating an enemy lol.
Is Monster Hunter World considered a JRPG? It's the only game on PS4 i would give dragon Quest a run for it's money because of the hours I put into it. Seriously though, PS4 has so many good RPG games but all of them get eclipsed by DQ11, some more then others, but man there is a lot of fun to be had on that console with RPG games.

This is a brilliant Idead never thought of thinking about favorids for consol genarations. I think my hardest Picks would be on PS 1 2 and 3 cause i played a ton of JRPGs i liked on those systems and i think the PS 3 has my most controversial pick with Agarest Genarations of war....i swear its because of the Story and how its told over genarations^^"

I totally agree on FF VI. Crono Trigger is obviously great, but FF6 is not only the greatest Final Fantasy, but the greatest JRPG, greatest video game and one of the greatest stories ever told in human history.
Also, Xenoblade Chronicles X is great, you should play it, even if it means busting out a Wii U.

And there's no way anything other than Shining the Holy Ark is the right answer for Saturn. Absolute masterpiece of a game.

Many developers wouldn't port rpgs to the N64 because the limited capacity of the cartridge meant they couldn't play much fmv if any at all. That's why we saw a drastic shift to disc based platforms. There was an early prototype for ff7 on n64 but once square found out nintendo's plan to not use disc they quickly shifted development to the Sony playstation and the rest is history

    • @arturboy777

Besides the disc issue as the other person said, Nintendo of America simply didn’t want them as they didn’t sell well with casual audiences. Nintendo wanted full 3D games and any RPG had to be suitable for beginners.

@@arturboy777 And now ironically things have shifted where NIntendo will take anything without really getting involved with what devs put in there while Sony's being ridiculous with being censor happy or other BS...hell the Vita died due to Sony's insistence on using those stupid overpriced memory cards or at least for refusing to decrease the price in said cards if they didn't change it so any card could be used even if it meant a slight loss in profits however said changes would've made the Vita far more viable/longer lasting world wide (and not just Japan) than what it was (Switch/hybrid consoles in general likely would've been the thing that killed it in said best case scenario for Vita).

Devs behind Panzer Dragoon franchise do not exist now (like 90% of Sega Japan studios, only left: Team Sonic, Rya Ga Gotoku Studio, AM2 and Sega WoW/Overworks). They dont have people to remade PD, the only one hope is remake from 3rd party studio, but this is very risky. And if I remember Panzer Dragoon games sold like shit, so i doubt Sega invest money and resources on very uncertain project.

NES: Ghost Lion. I almost picked FF1, but I'm going off the beaten path because in Ghost Lion you find your level ups in treasure chests, meaning this is the only 80s JRPG I've played that avoids level grinding.
SNES: FF6. Nothing else comes close for me.
N64, GC, Wii, Wii U: Nothing. I never played these systems.
Switch: Shin Megami Tensei 5. There's a lot of other games I haven't played that might compete, but this is the best I've played for the system.
Game Boy, GBC: Nothing. Never played any RPGs here
GBA: Shining Force remake. I forget its exact title, but I wasn't very impressed with most GBA RPGs. This is the only one I can point to and say, yeah this game is just good.
DS: SMT Strange Journey. Great game. I might have considered the Devil Survivor games, but I never got around to beating them, so Strange Journey takes the crown.
3DS: 7th Dragon 3. Sega is the best JRPG dev. I don't care what you say.
Master System: Phantasy Star. There really isn't much other choice, even if nostalgia didn't demand this game anyway.
Genesis: Phantasy Star 4. This isn't just the best RPG on the Genesis. It's the best RPG ever. Period. There is no debating this.
Sega CD: Shining Force CD. Definitely the best. Shining Force 2 would have crowned the Genesis if PS4 hadn't been there, and Shining Force CD is just more SF2. Great stuff.
Saturn, Dreamcast, Game Gear: Nothing. Afraid I haven't played enough of these systems to have a pick here. Sadly in my youthful indiscretion I switched to Sony at this point.
Play Station 1: Suikoden 2. I doubt I'm alone in this. It's here for good reason.
PS2: Shin Megami Tensei Nocturne. Definitely a masterpiece on a console with a lot of stiff competition.
PS3: Valkyria Chronicles. I already told you, Sega is the best JRPG dev.
PS4: Alright, I have to put Persona 5 here. It's just too good. Atlus is easily the second best JRPG dev. And I just haven't found the time for Like a Dragon or Valkyria Chronicles 4 yet.
X Box: Phantasy Star Online. There really isn't much to choose from here, is there?
X Box 360: Operation Darkness. You can have a werewolf shoot Hitler in the face with a bazooka. There. Now you cannot argue against this choice.
X Box ???: Nothing. I can't be bothered to keep track of what the hell the later X Boxes are called, and I have no interest in playing any of them.
TG16: Nothing. Sorry, never played one of these, either.
3DO: Lucienne's Quest. It's either this or... um... this is literally the only JRPG on the console. But at least it's a pretty decent game.

Dreamcast is Phantasy Star Online. 360 my personal favourite is Eternal Sonata then a close second Lost Odyssey. I have beaten Final Fantasy VII a port of the original on the Xbox One which i really enjoyed. Ironically more recently i beat Phantasy Star II on the Series X which is on a Sega compilation of games that was released on the 360/Xbox One. Although prior to the re-releases of the original Xenoblade I'd of said it still deserves the spot of best Rpg on the Wii. As far as exclusives still on the Wii, The Last Story is really underrated and was a shame they didn't also port it and Pandora's Tower on the New 3DS around the same time (the latter could've easily used the touch screen to replace the motion controls/pointer to navigate for example. This coming from a big Fire Emblem fan, and still, The Last Story arguably is the better rpg (Path of Radiance on GC was better than Wii game tbf tho.)
In fact, I'd like to see you make a video on Pandora's Tower & The Last Story Erick as those could also use more attention in the Wii's graveyard.

The Shining Force III trilogy could be the best contender on Saturn, especially now that they've all been translated and Saturn emulation has made massive progress so they can be enjoyed in the optimal conditons. Dragon Force 1 and 2 are among the very best games on the console but they're more strategy games than true tactical RPGs, the RPG elements are very limited in these. I'd also rate Shining Force 2 higher than the first: improved graphics and music, it's a bigger and longer game with a stronger RPG aspect on top of the SRPG core.
